The #INeLearn hashtag is used for both asynchronous sharing and synchronous conversations. Include #INeLearn in your tweets if you want to share resources or questions with Indiana educators and school leaders. Asynchronously, the #INeLearn hashtag provides educators across the state of Indiana a central space for sharing. On Thursday evenings beginning at 8 CST/9 EST when you use the #INeLearn hashtag, you are joining a live conversation--the #INeLearn Twitter Chat. For one hour, we interact in real time having a virtual discussion.
Welcome to tonight’s #INeLearn chat! I’m Amy, principal/lead learner from Angola, your moderator tonight!
We are continuing our series- “A Vision for the Future”. Tonight, our topic - Risk-Taking! #INeLearn
R1: Taking risks is leading to innovation. It also helps to build trust between Ss and between Ss and Ts. More “buy-in” to curriculum and much more engagement. Find Ss strengths. #INeLearn
Exactly! Isn’t there a Albert Einstein quote about that? Continuing to do the same thing and expecting different results is pure insanity...something like that. I need to track that down! #INeLearn
R1: One way we can support teachers is by honoring them as professionals. We have to support teacher creativity and risk taking. Let their passion for learning guide their students' passion for learning. #Inelearn
We can only innovate if we take risks to do so. I love the trust aspect also. When we trust one another and believe in each other, we are much more willing to take risks. #INeLearn

R2: Hasn’t happened in a few years, but a previous school/district I worked in had done things “the same ole way forever” and when I pushed for change, they pushed back. Where has staying stagnant got ya? #INeLearn
Yes! Our teachers are outstanding, and we support them by trusting in their professional judgment, as they take risks to help their students be successful. #INeLearn

#INelearn A2 at one point infrastructure was an issue, but in a lot of situations now, equity is more of an issue. The students don't have access to what they need away from school
Suprisingly enough my students. Last year I tried to give them an assignment on thinglink to label a cell membrane and they were VERY reluctant to put the time in to learn how to do something new. Hopefully this new group will be more into taking risks! #INeLearn

Leaders play a critical role in helping others take those risks! We need to say yes, support, and help through the process of innovating for our kids! #INeLearn

R2: everyone needs a tribe to keep on message. When we faced these challenges, we faced them together. Build a strong PLN you can lean on. Someone who will listen to your crazy idea and will say go for it! #Inelearn

Lead by example, I always say. It is a MUST! If we want to transform our schools into the schools of the future, we must lead the way, by example! #INeLearn
R3: I agree with @dianargill build your tribe! Find others that push and challenge your ideas but ultimately join you to bring vision to action #INeLearn
I also think that creating innovation is relinquishing control. Admins relinquish to Ts; Ts to Ss. It creates buy-in and helps develop trust. Trust is a huge part of any innovation idea. #INeLearn

R4: I've been integrating tools I learned about in @CYoungEdTech and @edtechmarcus's Teach Like a Student session into blended PD. Ts have started using tools in their own content, so that's a win for me! #Inelearn
#INeLearn R4: We recently changed device distribution at our H.S. from the first few days of school to our registration day a week prior. The result was many people wondering why we hadn't done it this way before. It made the start of school a lot smoother.
R4 with my older kids in earth space I've been relequising responsibility to them. More work at your own pace exploring the information and less me lecturing. Loving the #HyperDocs#INeLearn

R4: risk taking is asking for help as a teacher to their Ss. Yesterday I asked my AP Ss what they needed me to do to help them. It was a risk and something I honestly feared. I felt much better afterward and my Ss will benefit in the long run #INeLearn

#INeLearn A4 Hosting two cultural conversations last year. First one was with Monterrey Mexico 🇲🇽 over current issues. Was nervous about how students would answer questions but it went well. Learned to agree to disagree.
R4: Aside from ordering shoes off of a Facebook ad, if have to say running my own “Transitioning the Math Mindset” workshop at my school. Invited other districts to join so we can tackle the joys of adjusting the way we teach math in HS. #INeLearn

R1 Risk-taking models what we want our Ss to do. However risk doesn’t equal reckless. Be sure to stay within best practice and have intentional goals for the risk. Be prepared to learn from the failures and celebrate even tiny successes. #INeLearn
This is wonderful. I think our kids have so much to share with us in how they will learn best. Sometimes all we need to do is ask and listen. #INeLearn

Q5: In an age of accountability, how do we encourage risk-taking in others (teachers & students) in order to build this culture in our schools?
#INeLearn
Todd - you always have awesome pics and stories to share about the connections you are creating for your kids with others around the globe. Awesome! #INeLearn

#INeLearn R5: I think encouraging exchanges of ideas from all over the district is a great way to get started. Everyone has to feel safe throwing their thoughts out there for others to consider. Something like having a similar twitter exchange like this but inside the district!
#INelearn A5 I think its important to put accountability in its proper place and recognize that any risk taking that happens in the classroom can only benefit test scores etc because we're teaching Ss skills that improve their knowledge bases
We are planning on doing a few throughout the year. We just need to come together so we can figure out the best way to prepare our kids for their futures and not just the test.

R4 I recently helped lead Ts in building a strong transitional program for our incoming sixth graders. Super thankful for the support from my admin and the amazing team who pulled off a great event for our Ss. #INeLearn
A5: I think it always goes back to modeling. Showing how risk taking by students is leading to learning.
Let’s look at successes! Learn from them.
Play the long game.
#INelearn
R5: this might sound bold and maybe a little “out of bounds”, but I am accountable to my Ss in preparing them to be successful outside of my classroom. Teaching them skills to adapt, deal with people, and understanding my content. #INeLearn
R5: Agree with everyone who has said Model, Model, Model. Plus encourage trying new things. Shine the light on those that step out of the box and think differently. Let everyone know that doing what is right for students is valued. #INelearn
Agreed. There is so much greatness around us - experts everywhere in our schools. All we need to do is ask the right questions, listen to the thoughtful responses, and act! #INeLearn

Absolutely! When we prepare our students for their future with the skills they need to be successful, all the rest should fall into place! No more teaching to a test, PLEASE! #INeLearn

#INeLearn R6: Submit a fairly aggressive new 1:1 plan including a refresh of devices at our HS and deployment at our MS. Funding concerns have always scared me from putting it in front of who can make it a reality but I can't let that stop it from possibly happening.
#INelearn A6 One risk I plan on taking next week: following up on initial contacts I've made with some schools I know need to get their acts together...
R5: My big risk will be trying “something new” in our math remediation with our juniors and seniors. It’s crunch time and we need to get these kids to pass!! #INeLearn

R6: This is our first year being 1 to 1 and I want to tell my fellow teachers that I see the changes that they're making from "the way it's always been" to the way way it can be.
#INeLearn
R5 I am enjoying collaboration this year with my wing partner. I think we both push each other to try things we haven’t before and use our skill sets well. All skills have value and should be celebrated. When we feel appreciated, we are willing to try more. #INeLearn
R6: my risks are taking your ideas and trying them out in my room. You all don’t realize how much I take ideas from this chat and others each week and try them out, adjust, augment, make my own, and try out each week. #INeLearn

We're crawling out! Some of our most stubborn teachers have been really involved with our workshops and are implementing digital tools into their lessons every week. #INeLearn
R6 I’m taking many risks lately. Finishing my admin practicum which is bringing many opportunities to stretch myself. I want to experience it all and GROW like crazy. #INeLearn
#INelearn A7 that risk will transform growth and/leadership by shifting who lead and why. It will result in tremendous growth in learning for both teachers and students

#INeLearn R7: For us, more exposure to devices would help launch our new LMS, better prepare our Ss for testing with better keyboard skills realized by using a keyboard more frequently, and help the Ts realize some benefit to digital exchange of assignments and collaboration
R7 In my dream, these risks will lead to rich opportunities that expand my reach with students and families. In the short term, they provide humbling experiences that foster good reflection. #INeLearn
R7: the risk is whether my Ss will be willing to take risks based on the risks that I take. Lots of risks = potential for great reward with increased engagement and better educational results. #INeLearn
