Welcome #3rdchat ! As we kick off our #morningmeeting chat tonight, tell us what your favorite way to kick-start your day is! Don’t forget to share pictures of your classroom in action if you have any of your morning routines!
Azure from Derby, KS. I love to play a song or two in the morning while students are doing their morning routines. Students know when the music is over they need to be ready for the day. #3rdchat
Hi, I am Terry. I didn't see the intro. I always start with a song as well. Each day a different song. I am a new @ClassAlexa innovator and trying out some of her greetings as well. #3rdChat
Ron Martiello. 3rd Grade from PA. Good Evening, #3rdchat . I have some favorite songs I like to start off with. Kids are free to sing with me. My singing becomes more of a comedy act. Love getting the eye rolls.
I am excited to hear how you utilize this time. We have 25 minutes from the time the kids can enter the room to the time the tardy bell rings. Half come in right when doors open. Half come right as tardy bell rings. I need ideas. #3rdchat
Depends on the day. Wednesday is always It's Raining Tacos becasue it is Mexican food day in the cafeteria. We also love What I Am by Will I Am. #3rdchat
There is a new innovator program for Ts. If you have one send @ClassAlexa a DM and they can get you started. Just getting started myself, but it has some great T prompts for many routines. #3rdChat
A1: Our carpet time is my favorite part of the day. We have time to discuss calendar math every morning which allows for exploration of math vocabulary. We wish students well who are absent, welcome absent students back, and have a morning message from a student daily. #3rdchat
A1 I love using Whiteboard messages. My class really has the morning routine down. I love that everyone knows exactly how to get organized for the day and immediately get to work on various tasks. #3rdchat
Our school has a morning show every day, immediately after my RTI kids leave for interventions...so our morning doesn't really start until they return. I want them all there. #3rdchat
Jessica here fr Calgary. We start with a school wide prayer on the intercom. Then my class zips into the gym for 10 min & gets moving! Beat the teacher races, relays & silly locomotions every morning! I can check in with students & use it as an informal morning meeting. #3rdchat
I had to ration pencils leading up to winter break. And my ordered pencils arrived after school yesterday. I knew the kids would be excited :) And yes, they love the messages! #3rdchat
A2:As my students leave the gym in the morn. I welcome them at the door with a hug/high five, a good morning, and then they hit the zone they are at as they walk in the door. It is a good opportunity for me to gauge where they are at & how they are feeling each morning. #3rdchat
A1: Best part of our morning is greeting each student at the door, hearing about their evening, and getting lots of hugs. I also like that everyone knows what to do. #3rdchat
A1: My classroom has a superhero theme called Super University. “We grow tomorrow’s heroes today.” We recite the Hero’s Pledge each morning. The students commit every morning and take ownership. #3rdchat
A2: At the door; choice of a high five, high "y" (we have sign language!), fist bump, or side hug; to our walk-up music (@jtimberlake--Sunshine in My Pocket is probably our class favorite)! #3rdchat
A2 I speak to each s's as they walk in the door. They aren't supposed to come in until 8 but I let them in early. Great bonding time while they work. After the bell, school wide morning announcements then a quick meeting on the floor to check in and discuss day. #3rdchat
A2: I stand at the door and greet the kids as they come in. Anyone that snuck past me I try to connect with as they're doing their morning work. #3rdchat
I collected all the pencils at the start of the year. Each kiddo got three on the first day. The teacher helpers pass out a new pencil to every kiddo each Monday. We haven't ran out of them since doing this. In fact, I always send extras home at end of the year. #3rdchat
A1 I do my best be right at the door. Some r geared to share so I listen & respond. Some don’t make eye contact so a gentle pat on the shoulder & “I’m glad you’re here” is needed. Some need me 2 ask them a ‘?’. Varies day 2 day & kid 2 kid. #3rdchat
Love visits from Weth graduates! Warms my heart! Sometimes I hang back in the cafeteria hoping to see kids that have moved on to Middle School as they come in! #3rdchat
Love this visualization technique! Kids did a great job choosing quotes from their text and drawing the movie picture from their head. #MHErocks#3rdchat
A3: While my students are at their morning bins I sharpen pencils. Once our morning bin time is up we gather together for morning meeting and that is when I take attendance and lunch count. #3rdchat
A3: We have community supplies at each table/desk group so pencils are all ready to go. This is easiest since I do flexible seating. Students check in for lunch/take attendance the old fashioned way, pawprint with their name on the side of my file cabinet. #3rdchat
A3: attendance I take on my own while my kids are in morning meeting. Pencils are sharpened one helper end of day and I have a dull/sharp bucket #3rdchat
A3: This is the first school that I have ever worked at that I do not have to take lunch count. It was so strange when I first started. My teacher helpers take attendance for me when we come to the carpet for our class meeting. They also give out new pencils each Monday. #3rdchat
A1: We start with a Morning Meeting & How Full is Your Bucket check in. It works for us because we come together, know what’s going on and start our day caring how each other is doing😊 #3rdchat
A3. Sign in using smart board file by moving name to lunch choice. Student job then is to count and enter numbers on lunch Google sheet set up by cafeteria. Pencils and restroom to be taken care of before announcements #3rdchat
A3: I take attendance on my own while they're doing morning work. My school doesn't do a lunch count. I have a green cup for sharp pencils and a red cup for dull/broken. I sharpen at the beginning or end of every day. #3rdchat
A1: I am proud of the routines and expectations that have been set. We practiced a lot at the beginning of the year and the Ss know what to expect. I makes for a smooth early morning. #3rdchat
A3 Attendance is tracked as they come in and organize themselves. Students are asked to have 3-4 sharp pencils in desks. They sharpen in the morning if needed or using a hand sharpener whenever. Extra pencils r always available in the lost & found. ✏️✏️✏️✏️ #3rdchat
A3 I have my students do as many jobs as possible- the attendance assessor, homework helper, planner patrol, mosquito monitor ( door holder - we have a door that leads to outside), light laminator etc. #3rdchat
A2: I pick up our Ss in the cafeteria and we walk back to the room together. I give hugs or high fives while entering the room. I love the connection with my Ss. #3rdchat
We just sharpen pencils throughout the day as needed. I just ask them to not do it while someone is talking to us. My team ordered these electric sharpeners that are pretty quiet. I put it on the opposite side of the room of my small group table. #3rdchat
A3: morning board where they respond in their journals with a 💙of gratitude, reply to a would you rather question and a trivia question or other prompt while I meet with individuals, lunch, attendance... #3rdchat
A3: We have 3 shared supply baskets. I have found that this is easier for us than a pencil box for everyone. I take attendance on my phone which is nice. #3rdchat
A4: I make sure that I have music playing in the room as they come in (before our start our morning routine music), I have pencils sharpened in our extras so if they need one right away it is there, and I am always waiting to greet them at the door! #3rdchat
A4: Community supplies, objectives posted for their agendas first thing in the morning, check in for their zone of regulation, and MUSIC! Either fun or soothing. Whatever is best for your students. #3rdchat
A2: I greet each child at the door of our classroom by name & say “GOOOD MOORNNNING GRADE 3!” rather Robin Willams-like from Good Morning Vietnam. They’ve taken to all saying good morning to me as a big group. It’s starts our day right! #3rdchat
A3: In the morning I call it organized chaos. Ss are in charge of getting ready by doing jobs: Pencil Asst calls up Ss to trade out pencils, trash cans are being placed, agendas checked, attendance taken...etc. #3rdchat
Thank you for the compliment Azure! I do my best to read them and it gets easier and easier as I get to know them better. Facial cues and body language always help me too. #3rdchat#champions
A4: I have everything ready for when the Ss come into class. Pandora is usually playing. Pencils are sharpened and instructions on the white board for a smooth transition. #3rdchat
A2: Every morning after Ss use the restroom and get everything out of the backpacks they wait in line outside the door. As they come in I greet them with a "Good Morning." #3rdchat
They just walk through the line and take what entree they want. They always have fresh fruit and veggies to chose from. I have even taken pictures of it and sent it to Ts at my previous district. Everything there was from a can. #3rdchat
A4: Go straight and hang up items on hook, head to carpet and form a big enough circle for all to fit. We have a talking stick and the person holding it is the only voice on in the room once they’ve gotten to morning meeting #3rdchat
Q4: Having a morning meeting has been key for us! We check in with each other as well as set a positive goal for the day. We also discuss that day’s schedule. Which helps me process what it will look like too 😊. #3rdchat
They just walk through the line and take what entree they want. They always have fresh fruit and veggies to chose from. I have even taken pictures of it and sent it to Ts at my previous district. Everything there was from a can. #3rdchat
Like I said, it took some getting used to when I first got here. It seems to work. The good thing is if I forget my lunch there is something I can choose from. #3rdchat
A3: Most is these are turned over to the Ss. They put their magnet name in their # on our whiteboard for attendance, pencils have their initials on them & we have a Sharpener class job. Whatever Ss can do, I try to get them to do😊 #3rdchat
I think morning meetings are so beneficial, but depending on our schedule I can't always have one so sometimes I'll make announcements as they are waiting in line. #3rdchat
A5: Because we do building wide announcements, I do not do morning work. Students fill out their agenda and then read the story for the week or a chapter book quietly. #3rdchat
Q5: This is my second year to not have morning work,we do morning bins and my kids (& I) LOVE them! It has helped ease the stress of kiddos who are always late, or unable to complete the work independently. It gives them a chance to get "ready for school" in the morning #3rdchat
Making those connections first thing has been so powerful for my "tough kids" ... greeting them and having a quick chat first thing let's them know I'm here and I love them and they're ready for the day! #3rdchat
A4: Daily schedule set, routines in place so they know what to do, everything ready for the day, daily class goals, Accountability Partners, clear expectations, sense of anticipation & fun!😊 #3rdchat
A5: #3rdChat My class loves participating in our district wide Twitter Tuesday. #dskidschat We also have Thoughtful Thursday, Would you rather Wednesday and free write Friday. #sycaMOREyr1@Rocking4th
My Ss start their day practicing Reader's Theater scripts. They perform for class on Fridays. No morning work. Next routine is an interactive morning letter. #3rdchat
A5: for morning meetings it’s simple: kids can share one thing and another can make one comment. It usually takes 15-20 min. We really learn about strengths and interests! It’s their fav. Part of day according to feedback. #3rdchat
No morning work usually (sometimes a Throwback Tuesday or Wayback Wednesday "Brain Dump")... Ss have a choice grid with art, writing, reading, computer and lego (design/build/collaborate) options #3rdchat
A4 We must have schedule posted. We must have supplied ready. Most importantly: We must remember that we are all here together for a set purpose. #3rdchat
A5: My morning work is from the Daily Language Review book. It is also our English Language Development time so it leads to many mini-lessons to clarify new or review old concepts #3rdchat
I haven't moved to community supplies yet but I've tossed it around in my head a couple of times. I might need to pick your brain more about this #3rdchat
I've like it for the most part. Nice not to have to collect sheets I and the Ss didn't really care about or try to create the extra morning work sheets each day. #3rdchat
There is no way I can do everything on my own. My kids even answer our classroom phone for me. We pick new jobs every two weeks. The only thing I ask is that they don't pick the same job two weeks in a row. #3rdchat
A5: We start the day with a Math MESS (Model, Equation, Solution, and Summary) Students solve one word problem in depth. I tell them that Math is a team sport and they can collaborate. Students converse and find many different ways to show their learning. #3rdchat
I have a job chart and students rotate every Monday. By the third trimester they all have had a chance to do everything. This is when I have them "apply" for jobs. #3rdchat
A6: We do building wide morning announcements which includes the Pledge of Allegiance, mindfulness, breathing activity, reciting our school touchstone, doing an I Love You ritual and reciting our daily pledge. Our class meetings are daily before lunch. #3rdchat
A6: We do morning meetings each day after we come back from our Specials(we have those to start our day). It is a great way to connect as a classroom and build community and relationships. We aren't strong yet in all 4 comp. of morning meeting but we are getting there! #3rdchat
A6: we keep it simple. Kids love it based off feedback. If we have to miss it one day, kids are seriously bummed! And me too. I find out things that would never come up any other time in our day. #3rdchat
A6: I can't always have a morning meeting because we have a pull-out intervention group that leaves for a modified ELA/ELD block. So I need to make sure everyone is prepared and on time in the morning. #3rdchat
A6: We have quick meetings for "lead time" to discuss Leader in Me terminology/program but otherwise no morning meetings typically. Can't get on board with them/not my thing... I've tried #3rdchat
A6: I've done morning meetings when I taught K. Not yet with 3rd. A handful of my kids are always gone in the morning for SpEd so if I did something it would have to be at a different time. #3rdchat
A6: A must for starting our school year to establish a community! Love being able to learn about our classmates and how to respectfully greet others! Typically wanes by the end of our first trimester, though #3rdChat
A6: I like the consistency of morning routine, kids walk in and know just what to do. It’s so important to start the day off on a positive note with confidence. #3rdchat
A6 I have done morning meeting in a formal way in the past and loved it. This year my morning run time has become an informal morning meeting and it suits us well. #3rdchat
Q7: The 4 components of morning meeting are greeting, sharing, group activity morning message- what's your favorite part, what do you do to help kids get this in? #3rdchat
Our school secretary is amazing. She talks to them. Today she apparently told the child someone was leaving for the day. I was with a small group so they went over the kid told them they were leaving. Kid packed up and waved as they walked out. No instructional time lost #3rdchat
A6: We have a quick meeting every day & I LOVE it! It helps us bond as a group, set our class goals & set the course for the rest of the day. They’re short, but powerful! #3rdchat
A7: Morning messages from the students is by far my favorite. Each week we have a morning message job. That student can write the message for each day that week. We get anything from quotes to jokes or just a simple greeting. I love their creativity. #3rdchat
A7: I feel like at this point I am the most strong at greetings and the message. We love to greet each other in silly ways and different languages. I use the @WonderTheMovie quotes each day to guide a discussion and they always turn out so great! #3rdchat
Donna if I was a visitor to your school, I would be impressed that kids were greeting me. I used to have a greeter, but I rarely have anyone visit my classroom so we stopped that job. #3rdchat
Q8: Last question! What is it you are wanting to run smoother to make your morning start off better? Let’s help each other out and offer suggestions! #3rdchat
A7 Hands down the activity portion is my favourite part of morning meeting. Sneaking objectives into the activities is simple and building community with laughter and fun is guaranteed. #3rdchat
A7: Ss greet their Accountability Partners with their own handshakes, & I love them sharing how they’re doing. It’s an important part of becoming empathetic. #3rdchat
Q7: The 4 components of morning meeting are greeting, sharing, group activity morning message- what's your favorite part, what do you do to help kids get this in? #3rdchat
A8: I would love some tips on morning meetings. Where do you get your ideas/info from for it? Do you plan it separately just like ELA and math? Right now ours are a little loose, and they are fine but I want a little more structure #3rdchat
A8: I still have students who even though have the morning routine posted every day, still forget to check in for their lunch and for their zone. And yes, I am that teacher that often forgets to do lunch count. I suppose that needs improvement! #3rdchat

When I did formal morning meetings, I always looked directly at the curricular activities I was doing and got ideas for discussion and activities from there. Two birds with one stone as they say? #3rdchat
Have you tried assigning a reminder partner for each child? They could help each other stay accountable for various tasks and then the pressure is off of you a little bit. #3rdchat
You all are AMAZING! I can’t wait to take some of these things back to my classroom. Thank you for chatting with us tonight! Hope to see you next Wednesday as we talk Classroom Culture and Community! #3rdchat
A8: We have “While you were away” folders & the Accountability Partners our student work there for their missing classmate. It works reasonably well, but I’d love to hear other ideas! #3rdchat
And then I have the kids who notice and are calling out the names of those students disrupting things... maybe put them in charge of quiet reminders??? #3rdchat
A8: mixing up my questions a little more... I will always have them write down a gratitude for the day but what else could I have them journal... #3rdchat
Be sure to join #3rdchat next week on Jan 17th with guest moderator @bethhill2829 of #JoyfulLeaders to chat about The Power of Joyful Leadership in Classrooms!
