Q1. What are some activities that you use with students to teach the F.I.T.T. Guideline in #physed #espechat
  • SaraWoodPE Dec 5 @ 8:08 PM EST
    Sara Wood in NYC #espechat
  • COlchowski Dec 5 @ 8:08 PM EST
    Colin from Saskatchewan #espechat
  • MadiBrandt2 Dec 5 @ 8:09 PM EST
A1. It is fun for students to run to the YMCA song, and walk and perform the YMCA dance move during that part of the song. #espechat
  • EPEWCP Dec 5 @ 8:09 PM EST
A1: This is one that I need help with and can't wait to read all the other answers! I don't really like any that I use. #espechat
  • EPEWCP Dec 5 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1: At the MS level I would debrief what each day was with regards to FITT. It helped Ss see the use in everyday class. Elementary is where I struggle. #espechat
  • rich_wiles - Moderator Dec 5 @ 8:12 PM EST
Last minute to discuss Q1. #espechat
  • SaraWoodPE Dec 5 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1 I haven’t gotten into the FITT principle with my students. Would be good to expose them to it early and build their knowledge. #espechat
  • rich_wiles - Moderator Dec 5 @ 8:13 PM EST
Q2. What are some nutritional activities that you have used in your #physed or #health classroom? #espechat
  • smsandino Dec 5 @ 8:13 PM EST
A1 I chunk it up so when we are doing a fitness related activity whether it be a tabata or a core progression etc I speak to how it applies to the FIIT principle with that particular activity #espechat
  • rich_wiles - Moderator Dec 5 @ 8:14 PM EST
We can keep going with the Q1. That period was short. We can do Q1. and Q2 at the same time. #espechat
  • EPEWCP Dec 5 @ 8:14 PM EST
A2: I have had G 4-6 pick a meal from nutritional cards and then pick activities to "work off" that number of calories that they picked. #espechat
  • smsandino Dec 5 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2 I use to do activities such as the sugar and fat tag from @Sportime_SPARK in K-6 and would love to implement a choose your plate relay where ss have “x” time to get food and try to build the most balanced meal possible #espechat
  • rich_wiles - Moderator Dec 5 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2. I use Physical Best activities and some nutrition activities from Wellnet. #espechat
  • MadiBrandt2 Dec 5 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2: breakfast tag is fun. Its like red rover and tag mixed. The children cross if they had eaten that food that day! #espechat
  • rich_wiles - Moderator Dec 5 @ 8:19 PM EST
Last minute to discuss Q2. #espechat
  • EPEWCP Dec 5 @ 8:19 PM EST

    In reply to @MadiBrandt2
  • rich_wiles - Moderator Dec 5 @ 8:20 PM EST
Q3. How do you teach the importance of hydration with students in your #physed classes? #espechat
  • SaraWoodPE Dec 5 @ 8:20 PM EST
A2 quiz quiz trade: students each get a card that has a color and fruit/vegetable like “green vegetable” or “red fruit”. They quiz a partner and then trade their cards. #espechat
  • EPEWCP Dec 5 @ 8:21 PM EST
A3: I tell them water is a magic potion. It is the best thing for your body in the world. Nothing else can do what it does. #espechat
  • MadiBrandt2 Dec 5 @ 8:21 PM EST
You can either choose yourself or depending on how large your class is, 1-2 children #espechat
    In reply to @EPEWCP
  • SaraWoodPE Dec 5 @ 8:21 PM EST
A3 this chat is making me realize I need to incorporate more health topics into my lessons! Does my “how to use the drinking fountain” lesson count? #espechat
  • EPEWCP Dec 5 @ 8:22 PM EST
A3: At MS I would challenge Ss to drink 8 glasses a day and then document how they felt. It was amazing how convincing first hand experience can be. #espechat
  • EPEWCP Dec 5 @ 8:23 PM EST
YES! A must at early elem! #espechat
    In reply to @SaraWoodPE
  • MadiBrandt2 Dec 5 @ 8:23 PM EST
A3. I always try to have children 2 water breaks during class, and I always have my water bottle with me. #espechat
  • ChrisGrove_PE Dec 5 @ 8:24 PM EST
A3 We talk about sweating and risk according to percentage of water loss. Then what types of drinks to use for replacement. #espechat
  • smsandino Dec 5 @ 8:24 PM EST
A3 Well this year unfortunately it was a real life- hydration lesson where the ss collapsed due to dehydration. However, I do have a water tracker worksheet that allows them to keep track of their water intake #espechat
  • rich_wiles - Moderator Dec 5 @ 8:25 PM EST
A3. I work in hydration with aerobic fitness activities and the effects of dehydration.#espechat
  • EPEWCP Dec 5 @ 8:25 PM EST
Did you notice a change in your Ss after this? #espechat
    In reply to @smsandino

A1 For our county wide essential curriculum we matched up S3 Nutrition & Hydration with locomotor skills which includes cross country, aerobics, orienteering. #espechat
  • COlchowski Dec 5 @ 8:26 PM EST
A3: I have used a water log before, but with mixed results. I’ve placed poster stations around the gym for Ss to do a walk and talk about the poster. One of the stations was water break. #espechat
  • rich_wiles - Moderator Dec 5 @ 8:27 PM EST
Q4. How do you find a balance between activity time and the amount of time required for quality fitness testing data? #espechat
  • ChrisGrove_PE Dec 5 @ 8:27 PM EST

We need to chat about a possible PD in your side of the state. #espechat
  • smsandino Dec 5 @ 8:28 PM EST
After the real life lesson ABSOLUTELY, the water tracker does help as well though. It’s an eye opener for them! #espechat
    In reply to @EPEWCP
  • EPEWCP Dec 5 @ 8:28 PM EST
I am intrigued. Can you give an example? #espechat
    In reply to @ChrisGrove_PE
  • COlchowski Dec 5 @ 8:29 PM EST
A3: a google form tracks there understanding of that and nutrition for that particular outcome #espechat
  • EPEWCP Dec 5 @ 8:29 PM EST
A4: I struggle with this one! I only see most Ss 1x/week. Any input would be great! #espechat
  • SaraWoodPE Dec 5 @ 8:29 PM EST
A4 Run stations and pull students over a few at a time for push-up and curl up. My Ss this year need some more work with independent station work though. #espechat
    In reply to @rich_wiles
  • DMickBeversdorf Dec 5 @ 8:30 PM EST
A4: we don't do formal fitness testing...but when we did, that was a big discussion...#espechat Should we be assessing elem Ss fitness levels?
  • EPEWCP Dec 5 @ 8:30 PM EST
That is what I do as well. I keep hoping to find something better. #espechat
    In reply to @SaraWoodPE, @rich_wiles
  • MadiBrandt2 Dec 5 @ 8:31 PM EST
A4. I like to have the students run a mile at the beginning, and then play dodgeball and pull a few out at a time for other tests #espechat
  • SaraWoodPE Dec 5 @ 8:31 PM EST
I tried to do Ss scoring each other last year and if I were there again I would continue. We recorded with seesaw. With new Ss I don’t think it would work. #espechat
    In reply to @EPEWCP, @rich_wiles
  • EPEWCP Dec 5 @ 8:31 PM EST
That has been my personal questioning as well. But state mandates say we do, so I do. #espechat
    In reply to @DMickBeversdorf
  • ChrisGrove_PE Dec 5 @ 8:32 PM EST
Each grade has priority standards per MP. So we focus on 3 physical skills and then 1 standard from each SHAPE 2-5. Try to align things so it was an ongoing convo throughout MP. #espechat PM me and I can talk more details and share docs.
  • rich_wiles - Moderator Dec 5 @ 8:32 PM EST
We only do the PU, CU, S and R and Pacer with 4th and 5th grade. Two a year using a pre and post test model. #espechat

  • smsandino Dec 5 @ 8:34 PM EST
A4 We do what are called Mat Monday’s (our early release day every week) and we have ss go through core and upper body exercises + flexibility as 4 sections of #physed together #espechat
  • EPEWCP Dec 5 @ 8:34 PM EST
How long did it take you to train Ss to score accurately? I tried once and had to re-do all of them. But I love the idea! Would love to find a way to make it work. #espechat
    In reply to @SaraWoodPE, @rich_wiles
  • COlchowski Dec 5 @ 8:34 PM EST
A4: I dedicate one class per week to fitness for my classes ~30 minutes. Focus changes every month, for example at the beginning of the school year cardio endurance needs the most attention, so pre test beginning and post test at the end of the month. #espechat
  • rich_wiles - Moderator Dec 5 @ 8:35 PM EST
Q5. How do you use your fitness data with students after testing? #espechat. Please share examples and resources.

    In reply to @EPEWCP, @SaraWoodPE
  • EPEWCP Dec 5 @ 8:36 PM EST

  • SaraWoodPE Dec 5 @ 8:41 PM EST
they were moderately accurate. give students a rubric of what to look for. I'm wondering if it would be possible for students to train each other. some were VERY good at scoring, others, not so much #espechat
    In reply to @EPEWCP, @rich_wiles
  • EPEWCP Dec 5 @ 8:42 PM EST

A6: they are important for any learning curve. They are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time based #espechat
  • EPEWCP Dec 5 @ 8:43 PM EST
I have them work with rubrics for PU and CU. I found they are better at self assessing using video delay to learn form and technique. #espechat

  • MadiBrandt2 Dec 5 @ 8:52 PM EST
A8: Having them calculate their own BMI -remaining confidential and letting them know what is healthy is important. #espechat
  • APQenclasse Dec 5 @ 8:52 PM EST
#espechat a8 BMI is no longer used.
  • TabackRocks Dec 5 @ 8:53 PM EST
