Q1: Partnering with students means asking students to give input about their learning and then using their feedback to design meaningful work for them. #gcisdchat
A1: Partnering with students means communicating with them to help find out the best way for them to succeed. It means that I hear them and they hear me! #GCISDchat
A1: Partnering with students means working together in a way that equals success for each individual student in my class. No two learn the same way at the same time in the same pace. A partnership is vital to their success. #gcisdchat
A1: Partnering with students means getting to know the student, determining where they are in their academic learning, ask them how they learn best and work on a plan together to help achieve success. #gcisdchat
It means seeing students as volunteers and partners in designing learning experiences. Partnerships require mutual trust, communication, and teamwork. #gcisdchat
A1: Partnering with students opens up many possibilities by shifting the power dynamic. School isn’t being done TO you; you as a student have voice in the process. #gcisdchat
Hello all! I'm Jeff Samuelson, Digital Learning Specialist with Birdville ISD. Learned about your chat from @amyleitner06 Sorry for the late arrival! #GCISDchat
Q2: To partner wth students, I've asked for their feedback about assignments/projects/activities and about what motivates them. I've also invited them to design learning experiences and given them opportunities to lead. PBLs are a fun way to partner with students!
#gcisdchat
Bridget Visser 6th ELA & 6th-8th Literacy Achievement / Language Acquisition Teacher at CMS!! Soo happy my friends are leading! What a fast week it’s been! #gcisdchat
A2: Provide opportunities for self-reflection, data notebooks, extensions, ways to practice outside of school, provide open lines of communication so they feel free to share #gcisdchat
A2: One way I liked to partner with students is to have them work through a Stop & Go Chart after a summative assessment. It helps them see their successes and identify where they can grow. Then we'd have a 1:1 on chat to discuss their thoughts and next steps. #gcisdchat
A2: At the beginning of every year, my students take various personality-type assessments to see what they need in order to learn and realize how diverse the classroom is. #gcisdchat
A2: A big thing for me is listening to students, and helping them take ownership of their learning. Some students struggle with knowing what they need to succeed! My favorite way to explore this has been a mind map/flowchart to find out where WE need to go next! #gcisdchat
#gcisdchat One of the hardest things for me that I try to do more is just trust them. Let them make questions to ask each other and try to outsmart each other.
A1: partnering with students means taking down the invisible wall between the “what” and the “why” in our classrooms. They should be the most vested participant in their learning, and in order to be involved they need to know they why! #gcisdchat
Q2: One time I had my students choose the TEKS they personally wanted to show mastery of. Then they chose how they would demonstrate that learning to me. It was a pretty rad experience. #gcisdchat
A2- Unpacking assessments/projects & co-creating unit mind maps w/ ss- Makes the learning targets clear and helps ss become active learners instead of passive receivers of info #gcisdchat
A2: Like @aaronwoolleycms I have a questionnaire for students at the beginning of the year that asks them about interests, how they feel they learn best, ask them how I can best help them, etc. I conference with students throughout the year to follow up. #GCISDchat
A2: I always open the year with students identifying their learning styles. I try to encourage metacognition and self-advocacy so students can recognize how they learn best and use that knowledge to drive their education. #gcisdchat
Q2: Allowing students to select their own area of interest with center time and having students create list of ideas for upcoming units of study.. This is a huge "job" for 4 & 5 year olds! #gcisdchat
A2 Ss feel valued when allowed to make choices about their learning. Create ways for them choose how they learn, what tools to use, and how they show what they know. Empower them! #GCISDchat
A1: Partnering with students means sharing the ownership in this journey of learning. It means being able to be the guide, cheerleader, audience, counselor, “mama”, and knowing when to be which! It means the Ss show up & engage. #gcisdchat
A2: I used to have Ss track their TEKS progress so they knew where they shined and where they still needed to grow (Stole the idea from @Slingram66) #GCISDchat
A3: one of the biggest parts, if students can't speak and say what their values, opinions, beliefs, and perspectives are, then we can't support them and work with them as educators #GCISDchat
I pulled out about 20-25 that were applicable. Then I had them choose 5-10. Each student had a different set of TEKS for their project. This was a culmination project in an English class, but could work elsewhere I believe. #gcisdchat
Sorry I’m late #gcisdchat !! A1 and A2: Partnering with students means not just that they have a voice, but that they know their voice matters in the classroom. I’ve done that with lots of relationship building, and formal and informal surveys. Always love a good google form!
A1: partnering with students means not only listening to them but also being aware of their non-verbal communication. I can’t do it all on my own. #gcisdchat
Q3: Student voice helps us partner with students because it give us an opportunity to hear about what kind of work students find meaningful, which helps us design work for them! To design meaningful work, we have to get to know our customers! #gcisdchat
A3: Students HAVE to have a voice to be an active participant. While data tells part of the picture, their voice will tell the rest! We are teaching them, not ourselves, so their input matters. #gcisdchat
A3 Student voice is everything! Let them voice their interests, their learning paths, their struggles, and their discoveries along the way. They will do amazing things if their voice is heard! #GCISDchat
Sorry for being late to this Twitter chat party, but I just got home from our volleyball playoff game (we won!). I'm Rob Doyle from Colleyville Heritage High School, and I'm looking forward to diving into the conversation! #gcisdchat
A3: Students HAVE to have a voice to be an active participant. While data tells part of the picture, their voice will tell the rest! We are teaching them, not ourselves, so their input matters. #gcisdchat
A3: Partnerships don’t happen without dialogue. Dialogue doesn’t happen without 2 sides communicating. I’d say student voice plays a big part. #gcisdchat
A3: Student voice is instrumental in creating partnerships with students. It is an avenue for meeting the needs of the current students in our classrooms. #gcisdchat
A3: Students HAVE to have a voice to be an active participant. While data tells part of the picture, their voice will tell the rest! We are teaching them, not ourselves, so their input matters. #gcisdchat
A3 Student voice has to be heard to be partnered with. Truly listening and providing opportunities for students to be valued as people is vital. #gcisdchat
A3: student partnerships are crucial to student voice and vice versa! Without the feeling of voice and partnership, school may be something students feel like they just have to suffer through. And that’s not fun for the teacher either! #gcisdchat
A3: I think it is vital that the students know that you are listening to them and that their ideas are not only important but effect our learning. #gcisdchat
A3: Something I’m trying to improve at is less telling, and more listening. Not just with curriculum, but in trying to redirect behavior. It’s much more powerful for them when you let them tell their side of the story #gcisdchat
A4: Good question! Three major components of GCISD's portrait of a graduate consist of effective communication, global citizenship, and collaborative workers. So we help them by showing them what a healthy teacher to student mentorship should look like. #GCISDchat
A4: All of it! :) The first two that come to mind: Collaboration between students and teachers is required for partnerships AND self-regulated learners because students better know what they still need to learn when we treat them as partners. #gcisdchat
A4: creating a student centered classroom and producing global citizens who effectively communicate would be impossible if we did not communicate and partner with our students today. We can’t expect them to wait and apply these skills as adults #gcisdchat
A4: Without student partnerships, GCISD's Learning Platform and Portrait of a Graduate would not have a subject to represent. We must have a partnership with our students if we want to see a true Portrait of a Graduate! #gcisdchat
If we never include students in decision making for their learning now and teach them the skills of collaboration & communication, how are we preparing them to be decisive, intentional decision-making adults? #gcisdchat
A5: How can we expect to achieve POG if the G doesn't have a say in it? Our role in the partnership is 2 design exp. they need 2 develop the lifelong skills they'll need to find their success in life. We design better exp. for them by involving them in our plans. #gcisdchat
A4: We want our graduates to be self-regulated learners, which means that we want them to seek out meaningful, personalized learning experiences. Our job is to provide them with every possible opportunity to grow #gcisdchat
A4: The two I think of immediately are…partnerships require “effective communicator”, and students have a choice in how they are learning the curriculum “a learner-centered platform”. #GCISDchat
A4 Partnering with students is a role that continues to develop. Our students need to have authentic experiences to grow as learners and people. #gcisdchat
A4: Even with our youngest learners, they are learning that they are a partner in their learning and their voice matters. I can’t wait to see how this effects their learning through their years in GCISD and in life. #gcisdchat
A4: Often, students want to default to the “easy” way of working alone and we have to guide the next generation of future leaders in how to think critically and work collaboratively. Without their partnership, that goal will be so much harder to reach!#gcisdchat
A4: In order for student’s to be prepared for their future, they must know and fully understand our Learning Platform and Portrait of A Graduate. I could do better with this. Our teachers know it, but do our students? #GCISDchat#oct4u
A5: One obstacle I have encountered several times is the fixed mindset. Students often times feel they’re “bad at math” because they have struggled for so long. That’s when partnerships matter most!! I need to change their mindset and show them math is everywhere. #gcisdchat
A5 - The most common 1 I see is the 'failure to launch'. Ts too afraid 2 try for the first time, the unknown, 2 take the risk. But you'll never find a T who has partnered with their Ss AND wants a 'take back'. They ALWAYS are looking for even more ways to grow in it. #gcisdchat
A5: Obviously, workload can make it hard to partner with every student individually. Some of us teach well over 100 students. Also, the fear that we'd be scrutinized for giving more attention to some students than others might lead to a one-size-fits-all approach #gcisdchat
Q5: Perception. Us against them. We have to affirm, over and over and over, if necessary, that we are here to serve them and their learning & development is our top priority! We are all a team striving towards a common goal that cannot be achieved without their voices. #GCISDchat
A5: A lack of self-belief. Helping my young learners to know that they can achieve bigger and better goals! We are GROWING everyday! Encouraging them to "never give up"! #gcisdchat
A5 In working with behavior and special needs, I see deficits based on how a student has gotten to me. Self esteem, lack of confidence, and fixed mindsets are obstacles in our students believing their voice is vital. #gcisdchat
YES! Ss w/fixed mindsets is a huge obstacle in MS. They've been in school long enough to feel the "struggles" & think that they "can't do it" #gcisdchat
A5: Time is definitely an obstacle. It takes thoughtful planning to ask students for their input AND then use that feedback to design lessons. Fear of what students might say is another obstacle. #gcisdchat
A5: An obstacle at times is that we as adults think we know what students need rather than asking for their voice. We have life experience that is valuable but it is different than what their life experiences will be. #gcisdchat
Can I retweet myself for A5? 😂 Sometimes students want the “easy” way. Sit down, listen to the teacher give the answers, memorize some stuff and take a test. We have to be better than that! #gcisdchat
A5: As a teacher, being willing and able to let go of having all the control in their learning. As a student, for them to see that they really can do it and that what they think is important. #gcisdchat
Great point- Acting on ss feedback doesn't always mean changing your practice. Sometimes it means ss are uncomfortable w/ the new/challenging & need more scaffolding or encouragement #gcisdchat
A6 Many times it is our own preconceived notions that serve as obstacles to beautiful partnerships in learning with our students! (oh, and the always present not enough time :)) #gcisdchat
A6: If at first you don’t succeed…try and try again. I am persistent with students and show them I won’t give up on them, and won’t let them give up on me. Verbal praise works, and highlighting their innovative ways of solving problems in the class. #gcisdchat
A5 Many times it is our own preconceived notions that serve as obstacles to beautiful partnerships in learning with our students! (oh, and the always present not enough time :)) #gcisdchat
We’ve lived through those years and use our lens to look at their lives...our experiences color it differently. That is a huge step for some grown ups to understand. #gcisdchat
A6 Intentional planning of how to build partnership, allow opportunities for voice, and giving time for students to work collaboratively. Time. Time. Time. #gcisdchat
A6: Baby steps! Keep at it! And know that no two partnerships will be exactly the same. Each of our Ss need different things so it is expected to be. Focus on quality over quantity? Set realistic goals? #gcisdchat
A6 Ts giving themselves permission to take the time to know their Ss and build the partnerships no matter what. Then helping Ss understand they have a meaningful voice in the partnership. #GCISDchat
A6: Stay POSITIVE! Encourage each other and make the most of our time. Value our students and listen to them. These important actions will erase obstacles. It's mostly our perspective folks. #gcisdchat
A6 Give up a little of our need to control and listen as if you truly believe the student's voice is valued and knowledgeable and then see where that partnership can take instruction! #gcisdchat
A7: If you truly partner with each student you will have no choice but to be successful at differentiating your lessons and teaching methods.
#gcisdchat
Q7: all students deserve a voice. Teaching students to advocate for themselves will only help you meet their needs. Especially if they trust you as a partner in their learning who will internalize and utilize what they tell you. #GCISDchat
A6: Stay POSITIVE! Encourage each other and make the most of our time. Value our students and listen to them. These important actions will erase obstacles. It's mostly our perspective folks. #gcisdchat
A7: As I mentioned earlier, getting to truly know your students, where they are academically, and how they learn best can all help you differentiate to meet their needs. I use analogies all the time to help students relate the math to what their interests are. #gcisdchat
A7: Partnering should involve empowering students to pursue their own unique interests. There's nothing more differentiated than that! Everyone is different, and we need to give them the tools and opportunities to forge their own paths in our classrooms and in life #gcisdchat
A6: keep focusing on what the students need and want in their learning. Being willing to put in the extra time, planning and effort to partner with students. #gcisdchat
A7 One of the most frustrating (& defeating) things is planning a lesson 'thinking' it will meet their needs and it fails... Partnering w/Ss will help you 'know' which Ss needs it will meet and what you'll need to do to meet ALL Ss needs. =differentiation #gcisdchat
A7 Having partnerships with Ss means you have taken the time to know them first. Knowing them provides insights into how they learn. This allows for differentiated experiences for each student. Greatness! #GCISDchat
A7: We may think we know how Ss learn best, but when we ask them we might be surprised. Listening to them & finding out their learning needs automatically leads to differentiation #gcisdchat
Every time this happened to me I always succumbed to a class talk the next day about 'what went wrong'. Eventually I learned to ask & involve them from the beginning :) #gcisdchat
Partnering w/ students can increase differentiation in a way that we, as adults, never imagined. There have been many moments where students have shared tweaks and lesson design ideas that were WAYYYY better than mine! After sitting in classes all day, they’re experts! #gcisdchat
A7: Partnering with your students will allow you the opportunity to truly know them and their needs which will make differentiation that much easier. #gcisdchat
I know sometimes the lesson I taught 1st period would morph into something different by 8th period due to Ss feedback and suggestions. Always learning... #gcisdchat
I honestly feel like secondary could learn a lot from elementary in goal setting. It’s something I always admire when at k-5 classes! Love seeing Ss take ownership of their learning & be advocates for themselves #gcisdchat
A8: Goal setting can mean a lot of different things, but I think it's really important for teachers to directly ask students about their specific goals, preferably early in the school year (and follow-up frequently!). That way teachers know how to assist their students #gcisdchat
Need to sign off…my dogs are pawing at the door and we all need to get to sleep. Thank you @kris_lilley and @travisniemeyer for a great chat!! #gcisdchat
A8: Goals should be unique to each student. Teacher & student partner up to set appropriate student goal. Then, teacher supports student so student is successful #gcisdchat#gesshineon
A7: I like what @aaronwoolleycms said in A2 about giving personality test/surveys. Truly knowing our students will help us to meet their needs. #gcisdchat
A8: Goal Setting guides Teachers in their partnership with their students. Together, students and teachers can set and obtain goals w/in their partnership of learning. Goals=possible potential!
#gcisdchat
A8 So much of adolescence is having things decided for you... If we don't use the time we have now 2 teach them how 2 set goals, work through adversity, think further than this weekend, how can we expect them to do it then when they go to college have 97% freedom? #gcisdchat
A9: These chats always pump me up and get me excited about returning to school the next day. I just want to touch base with all of my students again about their goals and I want to find ways to create meaningful learning experiences for them! #gcisdchat
Q9: I would like to co to us focusing on feedback while being more I tentio al with student input for future lessons! Also, this was a great reminder to keep talking to and learning about my students. We are all working towards the same goal! #gcisdchat
A9: Continue to value each student in my class and focus on listening to their voice. In hearing who they are I will continue to learn how they best grow academically, socially, & emotionally.
