Hi all! Jessica, Ed Specialist at ESC Region 12 for Digital Innovation and Social Studies...excited over the next few weeks to start my #istecert courses and get back into running! #EDpiper
A1: I love that when students do NOT "turn in" their work, you can still see what they did! As a paper based former English teacher, it always irked me that when a Ss didn't turn something in, I literally got NOTHING. #friedfan#EDpiper
A1: It is easier for all. It eliminates the paper trail. Easier for Ts to provide feedback. Easier for Ss to document, and even collaborate with one another. #edpiper#friedfan
A1: NO MORE fighting with the copy machine! GDrive "slides" items from the drive to all of your students in Google Classroom. Save trees and a whole lot of time! #EDpiper#friedfan
I use google with @CanvasLMS. Turning in papers is as simple as sharing the link. The nice thing is that there is documentation of sharing with the teacher IF they turn it in. No doubt of “but, I turned it in...” #EDpiper
A1: Paper...haha that’s the ease...no more papers to lose or carry around in our bags like we were gonna grade them...all done digitally! #EDpiper#friedfan
Good evening fellow educators! I am @dawsonshari5, from Midlothian, TX. #edpiper@friEdTechnology I'm looking forward to enjoying my last Christmas break with 3 boys officially "at home." I fully intend on torturing them with Christmas movies and cookie making.

A1; So easy for students to "slide" the work right back to you, and you can be at the airport, waiting for a flight and go over assignments ON YOUR PHONE. Can you do that with paper?? I don't think so #EDpiper#friedfan
A1: It is the easiest way to take your classroom paperless. I love how it keeps my students and I organized and I can always tell who has and who hasn't turned in an assignment #friedfan#EDpiper
R1: mentioned already, but I can provide feedback, they can edit, and resubmit it seamlessly and only need to share an email or a quick note on their doc. #EDpiper
A1: Even if Ss aren't completing a digital assignment, Ss can mark their work as "done" in Google Classroom which is helpful for Ts to see the count of how many Ss are actually finished. #edpiper#friEdfan@desotoisdengage
A2: Grading in GC allows you to give more than just a score. You can give actual feedback. Show them where they excelled as well as where they may have missed points on the assignment. #edpiper#friedfan
A2: You can grade ANYWHERE, which makes a teacher's time just that...the teacher's time! No lost papers, and great for documentation for parents! You can't argue with Google when you turn in something LATE! #EDpiper#friedfan
A2: Using Google Classroom allows for more feedback during the process...can go back and forth without having to wait to "pass the paper"...I want to grade the process not the just the product. #EDpiper#friedfan
R2: you can grade with comments right on the document. Also, offer suggestions. Have them make revisions. Here’s a thought also, you don’t put the grade on the paper in red pen. Maybe change mindset of a grade equals the end. #EDpiper
Google Classroom provides so many fresh ways to give feedback on work & to vary who/when/where the feedback is coming from. #EDpiper#friedfan#googleclassroom
A2: Idea: Screencast your feedback with @Screencastify, then paste a link to the URL for the video as the feedback. Saves time and you can include SO MUCH MORE INFORMATION! #edpiper#friedfan
A2: My favorite part is all students work for the assignment is in one place. I also use version history a lot for group work. No more giving all the students in the group the same grade!!! #friedfan#EDpiper
A2: First, you don’t have to carry a stack with you. Second, use comments to encourage the student to reflect and give them an opportunity to edit their work BEFORE assessing. #EDpiper

A2: Check out this guide to using "Doc Stickers" on the friEdTechnology blog for a creative way to combine graphics (think Bitmoji) and feedback! https://t.co/GyExyvK1p2#EDpiper#friedfan
I also like to have students take pictures of non-digital assignment and turn them in. Helps if they want to include it on their digital portfolio!!! #friedfan#EDpiper
A4: There becomes a documented dialogue between the two. Ts can provide instant feedback to students when they need guidance or have a question. #edpiper#friedfan
Hi, it's Tammy McLain from Amarillo (Dimmitt ISD) coming in hot! Sorry to be late. I am most looking forward to spending time with my grandchildren. #EDpiper#friedfan
A2: Grading in Google Classroom means QUICK feedback which means Ss are more likely to be open to help than if the T doesn't give feedback until a week later! Ts can use data to adjust, be proactive and help Ss NOW & NOT LATER! #edpiper#friedfan@desotoisdengage
A3: Using comments to respond back a forth about an assignment is only one SMALL component. I love the idea of Screencastify for feedback. @alicekeeler said it best: crappy instant feedback is more effective than awesome delayed feedback #EDpiper#friedfan
A3: Classroom allows for dialogue and conversation to deepen learning. It is a great tool to differentiate questioning and allow for reflection. #EDpiper
A3: The T can choose whole class communication or private chats with a S based upon need. The Ss can privately message the T when they are too embarrassed to ask aloud. #WinWin#edpiper
A3: Having a platform for Ss Tt communication is SO IMPORTANT. I can hardly remember the days before digital communiques were possible, but I know I talked to my Ss a LOT less. Mine was the first class in the school district to have email access! #2001 #edpiper#friedfan
A3: GC can enhance collaboration between Ts & Ss...notice I said enhance...it doesn't build the originating relationship that is required for collaborative trust. Extremely important that Ts & Ss value/understand F2F collaboration skills for online success. #EDpiper#friedfan
Ok wow, I will have to read through this chat at a later time. I cannot keep my eyes open. The last week before vacation is always the hardest on my students which makes it hard on me as well. #edpiper
A3: lessens the turn-around time. No more waiting for 2 weeks for teacher input to a student.
Plus there are so many #TTS options for my #dyslexic SS to 'listen' to the input of the reviewer #EDpiper#friedfan

A4: Adding topics to each announcement or assignment allows teachers and students to filter for particular assignments or announcements. This is great when referring to and older post with students. #EDpiper#friedfan
Right, but we all need to find a new way to view "shared with me." We try to encourage folks to look at it like a Facebook feed instead of a file folder. It's not "your stuff," it's more like notifications. You like? #EDpiper#friedfan
A4: So, even though there is no longer a paper system....we still have to teach the Ss, and most likely some teachers, on how to be digitally organized. Just because it is digital, does not mean it comes automatically organized. #EDpiper

A4: GDrive holds everything in a nice folder for you. Ss cannot say Google ate my homework, and Ts cannot say I can't find your paper. Are you sure you turned it in? #EDpiper#friedfan
Oh I didn't say it was a a bad thing. Provides "documentation" for students if they have questions on if they turned it in on time. Just wish it could be "cleaner" #edpiper#friedfan
A4. I loved using Google Classroom with my staff as a principal. It was a great way to keep everyone organized and modeled what we wanted to see in classrooms #EDpiper
A4: flipping this answer: nothing compares to #GoogleClassroom for the efficiency and organization of material from the students's viewpoint #EDpiper#friedfan

More greatness from @alicekeeler to help with feedback in Google Classroom. #EDpiper#friedfan #GoogleEDUhttps://alicekeeler.com/2017/03/08/google-classroom-reply-initials/
A3: Google Classroom can improve S & T collaboration with Private Comments. The shyest, most reserved Ss get a voice and feel more comfortable reflecting on their learning. Ss & Ts give feedback to EACH OTHER- which helps us all! #edpiper#friedfan@desotoisdengage

Q5. Hesitant to try Google Classroom? Be honest - we are here to help! What is holding you back? What are your fears? #EDpiper#friedfan#googleclassroom
📝You asked, we listened! Grading in #GoogleClassroom just got better. Teachers can now view submissions across classwork & students, view and customize average grade calculation, and add weighted grade categories. Learn more and sign up for beta: https://t.co/fsDUKQ3lP3
Yep. I spend a 4 days after #LaborDay with digital labeling, colir-coding, adding chrime extensions.
#GoogleDrive is like an online licker that takes organization and a little maintenance. 🗄️

A4: No more assignment trays!!! Easy to know who has and hasn't turned in an assignment with just a click of a button. GC is also great for time management by being able to see how many students have turned the assignment in. #friedfan#EDpiper
A5: I think a lot of teachers are afraid bc they don't have time to learn something new. If you are using Google Drive you can us Classroom! They are best friends that work well together #friedfan#edpiper
A5: I hear Ts say that GC is just another app to learn that is not relevant to learning. My answer to that is MAKE it RELEVANT! How? Have Ss to PLAN and CREATE ways to show what they have learned. Digital tools are cool...not scary! #EDpiper#friedfan
JUST to add to what @TechieCari said, Google Classroom is the ONLY tech tool I know that makes you need fewer tech skills to use it! Learning curve goes WAY down for Google Drive if you use Classroom. #friedfan#EdPiper

The “cell” phone I remember was a phone in a briefcase that the radio station at our school used to help broadcast away football, basketball, and baseball games. It was super heavy. #EDpiper

A5: Our teachers love it. Some will give way too many assignments because GC makes it so easy. We are working on that! I also use it in my college course. My college students love it way better than what the university uses which I will not name:) #friedfan#EDpiper
I have leave our #EDpiper chat a bit early tonight. This has nothing to do with our chat, but I hope it'll give you a laugh. I bought the book in this video today. The Wonky Donkey is super cute!
