"Welcome to EdTechAfterDark! Our community was born out of discussions for a rich EdChat type gathering for those of us who are thinking about the digital edu-landscape long after the sun has gone down. For us night owls, when the clock strikes 10PM EST, you’ll find us on Twitter over at #edtechafterdark. All are welcome! Our discussions range from our philosophies about EdTech, digital best practices, and simply sharing our stories." --www.edtechafterdark.com

My first ! This is exciting
You're now my favorite person tonight.
I missed the comedian question...my fav is
A1: Ss could be doing anything when they're "staring into a screen." Good use of helps Ss get invested in learning.
A1: if students are staring into a screen then is not being used well. Allow students to create and investigate
My Ss are amazing and kept me motivated today! Other areas of my day....not so much. Happy to be here
A1 It depends on what a classrooms "EdTeach" consists of.
A1: No but there must be directions on how to use the technology in the same way for paper or you will only see blank stare
A2: Absolutely. We don't use tech for tech's sake! In our district Ss engage more in collaboration & conversation w/device
A1 I find EdTech brings in more energy. No blank stares, usually Ss huddled around collaborating and creating. HIGH energy!
A1: Edtech is more than using it as a "paperless" worksheet
A1 the thought of students sitting still scares me. The screen part irrelevant to me
Seriously Can you imagine how much Ss would love a class all taught by GIFs! I'm just saying!
A1:It can be.Many are concerned that tech is being used in the same way that worksheets are often used-ineffectively/lazily
hey Anne! Awesome! Our MDM has been acting up so we only have 4 of our 7 schools rolled out
I think often edtech gets lumped in with regular tech. There are apps for just entertaining & apps for learning.
A1: sometimes that is true - depends in the task and the kid
A1: you are the facilitator, the guide. You can use connections and questions to spark curiosity!
ohh you brought out Kris and Kross
A1: Maybe not a misconception, but not the way to do it. Students need to blend the digital with classroom collaboration.
A1. YAASSSSSS!!!! EdTech is more than consumption, it is about effective learning. It is never passive!
A1: I believe many assume "computer classes" r Ss staring at computer scrn- many think edtech is "fun" stuff 2do on Fridays
A1 Maybe mis-use / mis-communication ... If using for > instant gratification then no blank stares https://t.co/YQkhl1YbpF
A1: I do, b/c it's all about how you apply it. Can be much more dynamic than staring at screens-collaborating/interacting
A1: The work students do on the screen should bring about change in the world around them... https://t.co/zJeePnA2Un
yes - tech has to have a purpose or else it's no better than a textbook (ewe)
A1: Parsing information, reading, & summarizing content are more than just "the screen"
A1: Tech is a tool for ts and Ss to use. We must become skilled in using that tool or it will become Ss staring blankly
A1 just sitting and staring at a screen means edtech is not being utilized to its fullest potential!
A1: isn't looking at a screen! It's diving deep into content using tech to help! Great way to learn and explore
Well I'm thrilled share and learn with you! https://t.co/HCu0j1S3iS
My Ss are amazing and kept me motivated today! Other areas of my day....not so much. Happy to be here
Edtech is Lego robotics, arduinos, programming, coding, building, designing, creating so much more https://t.co/rA0Gyemeux
A2: Devices should be used for collaboration & content creation.Use SAMR as the backbone of ur instruction. Strive for R!
A1: we need to define EDTECH better- I tell non-believing Ts that it's technology that could and CAN enhance education
Thank you, very well put. https://t.co/2uVH9ZZR1v
A1: isn't looking at a screen! It's diving deep into content using tech to help! Great way to learn and explore
A1), to me its the opposite of students staring into screens it's them interacting with screens, devices, software
Favourite comedians: Aziz Ansari, Mindy Kaling, Amy Schumer, Kevin Hart
trying to convince other Ts of that as we've gone 1:1
A1) 👹EdTech in the ClassRM?
Let the sexting begin
using multiple platforms.
The nightmare begins.
- Parents Everywhere.
A1 To maximize misrepresentation a robot-teacher overlord should preside over screen-zombie Ss. https://t.co/ZlQ5Vf1Fuv
A1: Absolutely! Students are still engaged while using . Ss need to move!
A1) Staring at screens is a misconception. That screen is often a portal into worlds of learning or a vehicle for creation.
A1: WAY BEYOND THE SCREEN! Kids helping, collaborating, learning and creating in all different forms!
yes! And if we set clear expectations too!!
Totally agree. It is way more than consumption. At its best it's highly effective production!
A1: When I hear edtech I think sales, marketing, business. Maybe that's where I hear it most often - in terms of products?
A1: Unfortunately depends on how the tech is being used. Do believe we use it to enhance learning and engage learners.
Academic Tech Coordinator in BR, La!
A1: We build breaks that include collaboration and movement into our hyperdocs and interactives to avoid this.
BEST COMEDIAN EVER! Warning: explicit language ;)
Q1: It is our job as educators to create lessons that inspire and challenge. Our future is innovation.
A1)We can no longer be content with engagement or bells and whistles we have to ensure learning is taking place
A1: 👹Or as the famed Zuckerburg kid - rating girls + creating programs w/algorithms to make the process easier.
A1 had Ss create a prosthetic hands in class via tech. Ps asked why learning wasn't hands on! The irony!
I know enough Ts designing lessons intentionally, using tech for collaboration & knocking down walls to know better.
A1: Good tech integration starts with a teacher knowing the concept, pinning the content and choosing high or low tech
a1 the term edtech should imply how knowledge is diffused. Not what tool is sitting in front of them
A1: False. EdTech is a tool. Do they stare blankly at their pencils or notebooks? OK, maybe that last one... but still!
People who believe edtech is about staring into a blank screen DON'T know edtech.
Now all I can visualize is a kid staring at a pencil...maybe drooling. Eesh.
We talk about technology as an enhancement to good instruction all the time with staff
A1: Using “edtech” usually opens the door to collaboration…if you’re Ss stare blankly, you aren’t doing it right!
I feel similarly. As long as the screen learning can be applied to an activity /something hands-on https://t.co/WCLDuR8l0g
A1 the thought of students sitting still scares me. The screen part irrelevant to me
Love this! "...a vehicle for creation". Yes it is! https://t.co/sfRhbGYxfN
A1) Staring at screens is a misconception. That screen is often a portal into worlds of learning or a vehicle for creation.
One thing I've been kicking around is that EdTech is more than devices, its a mindset commit to prepare Ss for life
Natalie-Instructional Technology Resource Teacher from VA! Mostly lurking, laughing at GIFs, & nodding my head in agreement
Perhaps substitute 'or' with another 'and'? Conjunctions matter :) https://t.co/3ghJveGfux
A1: Good tech integration starts with a teacher knowing the concept, pinning the content and choosing high or low tech
A1 Boredom brings about staring...and sometimes drooling. Engagement comes from the design.
Aw man! I really want an ice cream cone.
Completely agree https://t.co/f156TuCNKW
One thing I've been kicking around is that EdTech is more than devices, its a mindset commit to prepare Ss for life
Everyday should give Ss (and Teachers) Opportunities to Create!
A1: Edtech can be a great asset if used properly or a great detractor if abused
A1: Yes, Ss are not to be mindless drones working at a desk like data entry workers in an office, it is a portal!
Just be you, they will see how the Ss learn and love your class, they will change https://t.co/q2fFtIGlAI
trying to convince other Ts of that as we've gone 1:1
Wait, I missed the first question! dangit! Hold on bro let me catch up
Ed Tech is an innovative pedagogical tool. It still needs intentionality https://t.co/5pFV6e6jAj
A1: False. EdTech is a tool. Do they stare blankly at their pencils or notebooks? OK, maybe that last one... but still!
Jeremy, CT. Kinda in and out of tonight. Love to catch what and when I can.
Agreed. It is like saying that reading is just staring at books.
I'm with Bethany on this one. Mitch's style is hard to beat.
You hit the nail on the head with intentionally!! Not used as a time filler but learning, collaborating!
Creative maker or passive observer-that difference determines the effectiveness of "edtech"
Edtech should transformer learning
A1: total misrep. Tech is a tool just like paper and pencil. We must show Ts how to use it to maximize instruction
A1:👹Ps are concerned their Teens will hang themselves/commit suicide/cut themselves after incessant .
A2: We are moving toward finding (local/regional) problems we can solve vs. teaching the tools.
Indeed! What's the point anymore? I don't use them for myself in real life, why should I teach the kids to?
I agree. It is the spark that leads to innovation & creativity.
A1: Tech is definitely a tool, but not the end all, be all! Edtech has a new identity: embedded, integrated, meaningful
A1: Teaching strategies are only effective if teacher guides and participates in learning. Tech is tool for enhancement.
And don't focus on that ridiculous four letter acronym that starts a with a S and ends with a R
Exactly, or don't care to know because it is out of their comfort zone!
A2: It's limitless. Can make learning authentic if the audience is beyond the 4 walls of my classroom
We live in a small village in the Arctic, so students need to be comfortable with tech to engage with the outside world
Technology is a tool, any tool. It needn't be electronic. It's anything that facilitates learning. https://t.co/lzZCtUNK4H
A1: we need to define EDTECH better- I tell non-believing Ts that it's technology that could and CAN enhance education
A2: tech provides S and Ts with opportunity for real time collaboration at a distance. It allows for minute to minute info
absolutely, couldn't agree more
While collaboration is far from dependent on , certainly accelerates it!
A2: multi-access and blended learning models to have give learners access more easily. has opened so many doors!
A2: the ability to remain infinitely more connected to the school and the awesomeness happening inside our walls everyday
A2: is important allows for . We use it w/clubs, ASB and classroom content. Allow Ss to publish online too
A2 sharing is the point of tech. Use tech to expand the walls of your classroom
A1: Yes! It can be a misrepresentation, but some Ts do use tech as a pacifier which is what gives that representation
I'm not sure I'll ever truly understand your disdain for SAMR.
A2: This is the way this generation communicates. To hear their voice we also need to use their platform or give them one.
Exactly. Had a principal who came close to that once. Was mad cuz kids were too quiet during reading time...
It's got to be more than replacing paper
Cassir Nix in this piece!!! What up fam
A1:tasks become rich based on thinking behind it-tech w/o thinking can be screen time but tech with thinking=transformative
A2: Being able to research and collaborate. Skills that Ss will need forever! Tech isn't going anywhere!
A2: RealWorld
Ss will learn from + use to to KILL anyone whom they 📌as competition. 1/2
A2 real world implications is authentic sharing of ideas. Can access/produce/share in a way that connects Ss to community
A2: Our district has built center'd around & Support from communitycrucial
It kills student creativity and freedom to learn. Not substitute but freely invent
A2: The more use of technology students face the more adequate and aware Ss are on how to navigate.
- very interesting! What grade level?
Feeling the same here too.
hey Jacob it's fast tonight jump in!
A1:At elem level, learning to communicate globally, effectively, appropriately. Making your voice heard w/ modern resources
A2. IT HAS NO BOUNDS. Okay, but really. At this point, it is applicable to nearly every field and everyday life.
Very much, but also kid choice. They should get to choose the tool they want.
I'm all about the growth of my Ss as learners.
A1)Right now if appears I'm just staring into my device. The perception of kids staring at tech is from those not using it.
Would that not depend on the Tchr and how used? 😳 https://t.co/zd17CSPMr9
It kills student creativity and freedom to learn. Not substitute but freely invent
one day you will see. It is like waking up from the matrix
enhances sharing thru greater visibility, & simultaneous preservation & opp 2 improve
A2: R Ss used tech 2 research garabage/recycling & raised $ 4 recycle containers 4 r city parks. Used SM to spread the word
A2: RealWorld If the victim speaks out 📲💻will be stolen under false pretext like Terrorist to ruin LIVES or HACKED
A2: communicate passion, perseverance, and mastery
A2) , students actually do real life not just pretend to do it for a lesson!
A2 Ss are now afforded opportunities to connect with professionals in the field more easily. They often only need to ask
A2: voice for non-verbals/ell. In coding prôjects we are all equals and co-construct learning/thinking together
A2: Tech use must be more than a checked box. Move from compliance in implementation to innovation https://t.co/USKjVREgyj
A2: Using right now to share Ss work examples & information throughout the day!
Yes google docs to collaborate anywhere.
A2:Tech savvy Ss will be able to create solutions and become effective globally conscious citizens https://t.co/AZ6pu68nZe
Join the crew on Monday night as we discuss real world implications of tech use in the classroom! https://t.co/XmczWdsMrk
A2: I try to get the community involved with our PBL's either via Skype/Hnagout, or panel to help students.
A2: When used properly tech can aid in , , ,
Should always be asking ours levels and Ss how the tool moves learning deeper
A2: preparing students for "real world" science- surprise a lot of it is in front of a computer
A2 allows for learning to happen outside of our class/school walls! Collaborating, problem-solving with others!
That's when learning comes alive, tech or no. https://t.co/74zQ6z3eVV
A1 I find EdTech brings in more energy. No blank stares, usually Ss huddled around collaborating and creating. HIGH energy!
A2: Appropriate, intentional use of tech arms Ss with tools to function in a world that expects them to use tech!
A2 Improving a community requires research. Tech is a great way to access needed info, organize info, and share proposal.
substitution is not creating and limits outcomes
A1: Ts need to be mobile & agile while students are learning. Tech cannot be an email break for Ts. https://t.co/F2cwv9PciW
A1: Teaching strategies are only effective if teacher guides and participates in learning. Tech is tool for enhancement.
A2: Organizing ideas, creating solutions, communicating, just even researching job market. Everything is enhanced by Tech.
A1: Staring blankly screams disengagement. Edtech can be polar opposite...it's everything we hope for in learning!
A2. We have Ss create data collection devices for measuring our real time power usage remotely anywhere.
pure taste, with none of the calories!
Welcome to the RealWorld
She said to me
Condescendingly ...
there's no such thing as the Real World just a LIE
Anything good can be watered down to remove the higher-order thinking ... Need to use wisely https://t.co/vKGgCIKdPj
I love using Google apps for collaboration!
A2 technology can help with developing solutions based on empathy
Right!!! So they knock what they don't try.
Skype with other classrooms & scientists & educators around the globe.
R2: For mine, it's a desire to know the answer, then using their tools to search for it. "Hey, I googled this, and..."
A2 Tech use in service of honing literacy chops amplifies skills that community values. Ss publish & make skills evident.
A2: What implications DOESN'T it have? It's the world they live in and they need to learn to harness the tools to the max.
We are a village of 500 at the intersection of the porcupine & Yukon river. No road access!
Shoot! Gotta dodge out already! Catch next week.
A2: Easiest way to tie learning concepts to the real world
A2: Ss are born into a teach world, tech tools in school is a natural progression for teaching and learnng.
A2. We are also starting an initiative for student made #360 virtual tours. Ss as the tour guide of our community.
A2: Can't find a job without having a basic tech knowledge.
A2 The use of tech in the classroom alone changes nothing. Intentions should be to do what you couldn't achieve otherwise
you mean they don't trust the silence is a good thing?
About PURPOSE! All tasks regardless if tech or not have to have clear objs. https://t.co/jOWxN8lRwz
It's got to be more than replacing paper
Thanks! It's true! That was my mantra with my APUSH kids last year.
A2: Allows our Ss to see past their own home & travel places they've never been! Prepare for a future not yet created.
Q2: Connecting to a world outside of theirs. Seeing the bigger picture. Expanding the boundaries of learning & thinking.
Using devices beyond the social media - for measuring - solving problems and iterating thought creatively in the field
A2: Letting families peek into your classroom sharing can create & have on
Maybe they need to show my Seniors...lol!
Publishing gives student voice meaning and purpose. Purpose ups engagement
A2👹Only I can make millions
w/an app
🤔stolen?
vulnerable classmate?
~ a bully stealing lunch💸 https://t.co/lnBZMGIi7B
A2: My students have used tech to communicate w/ Ss in Malaysia & AU to promote r city & share how great it is w/an iBook.
A2b: The iPhone 7 is the worst tech they will ever use. They must Lear to be fluid, creative, and productive w/the tools.
Exactly, and the Ss need to k ow the purpose more than anyone else! https://t.co/4vSIYqMA9J
About PURPOSE! All tasks regardless if tech or not have to have clear objs. https://t.co/jOWxN8lRwz
It's got to be more than replacing paper
I think this can be achieved with social media as well
Students do not know a world without these tools. Ts have to get over the fact that they might not know how to use it..yet.
A2: Just today took part in a meeting to brainstorm ideas on community Engadget through Digital Literacy & Anti-bullying.
Amazing! https://t.co/F6CXy0rkSN
A2. We are also starting an initiative for student made #360 virtual tours. Ss as the tour guide of our community.
learning should not have limitations placed. Augmentation is very tool focused and not learner
- Even if it comes from Waterboy 😁😂.
A3: I utilize twitter to connect with other peers to share best practices
A2: Citizen science now is now an authentic measure to gather real-world data - students can now act as true scientists.
depends on silence .. Are sts processing info via comm w/ screen or verbally processing w/others https://t.co/1twhiwggrL
you mean they don't trust the silence is a good thing?
👹 hacking as a form of criminal competitiveness?
To get away w/AttemptedMurder

A3: Connecting through Twitter! Connecting through the Global Read Aloud
A3: I personally use Twitter to have 1:1 conversations and relationships with people I have never met (like the dudes) :)
Late, but glad to join my favorite chat of the week! Jaclyn, 1st grade teacher in metro-Chicago! Hiya folks!
but tech tools need to be used in balance with non-tech tools
A2: Kids can experience possibilities & take charge of learning. They can build skills that will help now and in the future
Lol. Your followers might get a little bored with that, but go ahead!
But it's a decent first step for those who aren't comforable w/tech yet.
if only it weren't for the typo!
A3: Twitter!! Where else can you connect with the likes of & ?
My 18 month old grandson is a techy already.
totally agree. Have to give them FULL attention. Feedback is the "breakfast of champions" right ?
Could you elaborate on that? Are you referring to NGSS?
Edtech opens avenues for differentiated learning opportunities
A2: tech levels playing field, makes the world smaller. Equal access and skills to be competitive https://t.co/9NksFq4KsV
A3: Hands down social media. Allows for me communicate, collaborate w/ others around the world
A3: is an awesome tool for students across the country and world to bring outside world to classroom
A2) Reflective blogging by Ss shares their experience with broader community, empowering them as teachers/producers
A3 when a student does an activity, they have a responsibility to share back out to the world
I agree...just like Ts need to learn new things, Ss should experience "old" things that still have merit.
A1. I think misrepresentations come from experiences. We need to show that edtech is not "screen time" its creation time
With Edtech we actually have the magic school bus that can take learning anywhere.
likes this, "why would you put work in something that would be read 1 and thrown away?" https://t.co/cldCDhkwdx
Publishing gives student voice meaning and purpose. Purpose ups engagement
is going from chalk n talk to PowerPoint a good first step?
A3: I would say there's tons of ways to connect but also kids can connect with each other, right in the room, in new ways
A3 Does my PLN count? Here I am utilizing twitter to INCREASE my overall educational experience and understanding as a PreT
A2: texh can help create collaborating skills and empower innovative thinkers to solve real world problems
Redefining teaching and learning!! https://t.co/16mGdu0elv
A2: My students have used tech to communicate w/ Ss in Malaysia & AU to promote r city & share how great it is w/an iBook.
A3: to help learners get in touch w/ experts in their inquiry topic's field. To bring in the power of SM & my PLN
A3: Use real world problems that students can pose answers Give them a chance or you will never know what they can create!
To get their feet wet before jumping in, yes. It can lead to using other things once comfortable.
A3: Blogs and Pinterest and Twitter and everything else in the world lets us share ideas quicker than ever
Ss use GAFE as ways to collab around the world. Twitter, Skype and FaceTime conferencing to collaborate on projects!
A3: is my go to. Others are Also share w/ blogging @alexstubenbort
A3: Lots of ways I'm sure most have mentioned: GHO, Skype, Periscope, WhatsApp, Snapchat, Instagram, GAFE...

Oh .. So I saw it as support to teach S how .. Like crutches (used only for short time) ☺️ https://t.co/UcyN8fegrx
learning should not have limitations placed. Augmentation is very tool focused and not learner
As well as make them new & better https://t.co/6YXlVLNvMi
A3: Blogs and Pinterest and Twitter and everything else in the world lets us share ideas quicker than ever
some of the best PD & therapy you'll ever receive can happen right here on , , & of course

A3 when a student does an activity, they have a responsibility to share back out to the world
A3: developing a global PLN allows both Ts and Ss to communicate, collaborate, be creative and think critically 24/7
Connect with far away family & friends and build connections via PLN on Twitter and FB especially
A2. In the C I serve, tech at home is very limited. For these Ss and Fs it shows that there is a world to meet and explore
Finding research on pln/connecting to Ts chasing after own learning and collaborating with others
A3: It's endless how we can connect with Parents, Ss, and Ts. The key is that it is safe, meaningful and organized for all
A3: My class has a Twitter account () & Tweets all our digital projects. Podcasts, , etc.
A3: R Ss have connected w/Ss all over the US, Mexico, Malaysia, AU thru various tools blogging, Mystery Skype & others.
We just did this a couple hours ago!
A3: have encouraged students to connect using TEDed club format
I am here lurking seeing some great stuff Glad I am up
A3) In , they use VR to transport students to remote places and virtual labs
GDoc daily BUT use paper dialogue journals. Ss love it. Had them vote & all classes voted paper
A3. But for real, I love connecting via . & . live. So much connection to the world at my fingertips!
We do with math, , & Google lots of pics or videos during genius hour!

Google Doc pen pals, love that idea!! Would love to hear more about that!
Thank you. We try real hard to break down the 4 walls of the classroom & provide opportunities for r kids.
beyond a stated objective students need to feel the purpose beyond covering the material. Relevance!
Right? And crowdsourcing them. One of my peeps helped me fine-tune a activity tonight.
That truly is amazing Abbi! I love the global connections & possibilities our ss & we all have.
Don't disagree. No longer highlight it. All about choice. If they prefer analog, be my guest.
A3. I use tech to "meet" and network with wonderful professions like this! News, current research, communities, all a part
some of my best lessons are from those who already shared them.
A3: Pretty sure I am hook line and sinker in ❤️ with the ideas of and !
looking forward to doing this this year
This is amazing!! https://t.co/Vb7LbFWn0v
A3 Connect to current events. I have used to connect Ss to the stories of Syrian refugees in a meaningful way
A3: Global Connectivity would allow the girl my boy 💔likes to CHOOSE despite her living in the same vicinity.😱😧
are an inexpensive way for immersion learning about almost anything, on the planet or off! .
A3) with , we amplify student voices by giving them full web domains
A3: We can grow our PLN within our campus/district/metroplex -- and we can use tech, , to connect.
YES. THIS. Oh my goodness.
when the audience grows the stakes feel higher. Everyone wants their voice to have value
A3: We have many class Twitter accts & all r 13+ have their own Twitter accts. We also let kids use Snapchat in MS.
Its a small world after all....ear worm thrown at you...
We are on the same page, Jesse -- whether digital or analog.
Intersesting - I will look into this! Thanks for the tip
A2: some may not get edtech otherwise. Others need dig. Citizenship. Tech is everywhere. https://t.co/zrj65Hiri5
Join the crew on Monday night as we discuss real world implications of tech use in the classroom! https://t.co/XmczWdsMrk
A4: Everyday I look for best practices utilizing the twitter search feature.
I now feel like this is something I should've already known.
A3: I can connect but I'm more intentional by creating to connect.
A3) we also use to have our Ss who are studying abroad share their experiences
