Each Monday evening at 8PM EST, music teachers get together and share ideas about important topics within music education. It’s a great chance to interact directly with educators from all over the world and to get new tips and tricks to help you succeed in the classroom. The entire #musedchat discussion is organized and moderated by Joe Guarr.
Not terrible. State festival for the 8th Grade on Saturday and we're all working on Spring Concert music. Crazy time of year for all!!! You? #musedchat
A1: Most recently I’ve been taking both bands to a local amusement park for a festival- between 85-100 kids combined, we play two songs. We have 9 elem schools in my district and we are all going this year! #musedchat
A1. Took approx 70 students (band and choir) to the Harrogate International Music Festival in England last year. It was an amazing experience. #musedchat
A1: privledged to have traveled all over as a student- Hawaii for 7 days, California for 7 days, Disney for 5 days, Europe for various lengths (all in HS) #musedchat
A2: For our Chicago overnight, we sets dates a full year in advance. Registration happens about 7 months in advance and lasts until the trip fills up #musedchat
A3: I have contributed to my PLN by sharing lessons and techniques for instrumental music, as well as participating in Twitter Chats. Some of my favorites are #musedchat, #elmused and right now #PLNSFORLIFE
#musedchat where are my manners Antoine here from Woodbridge Ontario Canada HS instrumental music teacher MB and drumline director of the @FrBressaniBands
A3: I think school rules should still apply on trips. And as a general note they should be aware they are not only representing themselves, but their school, band, parents, etc. #musedchat
On my first ever trip as a teacher, one chaperone snapped at me "It's not my job to be a babysitter!" So I shot back "No, that's your ONLY job this weekend." #musedchat
#musedchat A2 all the paper work that's involved. But once it's done it's a matter of changing the date and location. I usually plan a year in advance. Right now I'm planning for @musicfestcanada in Ottawa next year and Chicago or Florida in 2020
A3: As for chaperones I think it’s important that they know they are the adults on the trip and they should be available for Ss if something happens. #musedchat
I got to go to Disney last year...the fun of seeing all the Star Wars things was balanced out by the backpack full of prescription medication I had to carry through the parks all weekend #musedchat
#musedchat A3 I expect the chaperones to help monitor the kids during touristy stuff. When it comes to performances I'd rather they just observe and stay out of the way there are certain things that only a music teacher can figure out (this pint sounds rude, I'm sorry)
Q4: What advice would you give for teachers who haven't traveled with Ss before? Folks who haven't traveled, what questions do you have about the experience? #musedchat
A4: I'm from a rural area, and kids from rural areas go WAY crazier than kids from suburban/urban areas. Be aware that some may be going through culture shock. #musedchat
A4: Since it’s been a while since a hs band trip, how do you prevent or prepare Ss to act professionally but also encourage them to have fun? #musedchat
A4: Since I’ve been on a few college trips lately, how do you prepare Ss to act professionally but at the same time encourage them to enjoy themselves? #musedchat
It gets easier the more frequently they travel. For those first few trips as youngsters, be ready for very frequent reminders. Discuss expectations in depth before departure. #musedchat
#plnsforlife Not only growing in your teaching, but PLNs can be a productive way to blow off steam and rekindle some humor/joy in what we do, as well. @gerrybrooksprin anyone? 😄
