Welcome to #sunchat! Welcome to our #hacklearning folks - today we are talking about cross-curricular lessons! Bring your best ones and show them off! Sign in - name and grade level!
Easy and effective trick to solve problems more accurately - just turn the paper sideways! It keeps all of the numbers in place value columns! Check out my tpt store for more ideas and materials: https://t.co/FCmc2xFU6v#hacklearning#sunchat#edchat#mathchat
Do math conversations DIE when the answer is revealed? Teach students to challenge each other's ideas with these questions that promote math thinking. Check out my tpt store for more ideas and materials: https://t.co/FCmc2xFU6v#hacklearning#sunchat#edchat#mathchat
I'm hoping to *steal* some great ideas from you all today. I love doing cross-curricular lessons. Throws the kids off their game when I start doing Math on the board in my ELA classroom! lol #sunchat
Subject integration is so important. I taught 6th math and science....but the best lessons were when my students asked, “which subject are we learning right now?” #sunchat

Thank you for mentioning me! You are too kind- I grow myself daily with all of the great educators I connect with. Really is the best form of PD! #growPLN#sunchat#TXed#EDUgladiators#educhat
Good morning #sunchat! Carla, from Santo Domingo, D.R. Love the topic today....so important for Ss to know that writing isn't just for LA - we use it in everything.
I do a "heritage" unit and we read about Ellis Island (social studies), we calculate the number of immigrants who came through and sort by country (math), and then write about the experience from an immigrant's POV (ELA). #sunchat It's a fav of mine!
I'm working with a fifth grade math teacher who, inspired by "The Number Devil," is having her students write and illustrate fictional narratives to teach math concepts to younger students. #sunchat
But we use reading, writing, music, and art all the time. Currently I have students doing a photo essay on their state, using music to understand the transmission of messages before civil war, using photos to build some sense of empathy at same time #sunchat
I love to discuss with the kids what jobs they might get if they are good writers. Ummmm, any and all of them? We read and write in any and all jobs. They say "not cops". Umm..ever see a police report? #sunchat
I teach HS science. In Earth Science, we study rocks & minerals. We study birthstones, we look at the mining process( impact on the earth &ecosystems), how the minerals form, math(cost of mining, production, and consumerism), social/cultural implications(Social studies) #sunchat
I have a problem with science and ELA. We can do the reading and writing about science, but, I'd love something more creative. Anyone have any ideas? Tried and True? #sunchat
Sure! Statistics can be easily integrated with civics; history and geography can be integrated with geometry (our Ss built medieval castle models to scale). Look for SS/math PBLs. #sunchat
Proportions are how we determine representation in the House of Representatives and therefore the Electoral College. Changes in population change political power of states. Also, disproportionate power in the College because every state gets two Senators. #sunchat
1/2 I’m at the HS level. People like @thnorfar inspire me, and I have a vision for a civics project - “Will My Voice Count?” Students learn about the election process, gerrymandering, and then run an analysis on our state- do gerrymandered districts exist? #SunChat
Number sense is important when looking at budget deficits. Most adults, let alone students do not conceive of a trillion dollars. It's a million millions! #sunchat
Yeah we do all of these things already, I guess they are math. Always just thought of them as social studies. Maybe I’m just tired of social studies getting the short stick it’s my natural rebellion 😂 #sunchat
There are science picture books (Giverny award) that integrate science and literacy....you could have students create their own picture books relevant to the Sci topic they are learning? #sunchat
Morning, #sunchat. I'm Brian. I teach middle-school students English in CO. Excited about leveraging natural humanities bridges to explore social justice in 8th-grade ELA/History classes. Also see silo-busting possibilities in Genius Hr, 20% time, design-thinking projects.
We integrate music with ELA when we do a poetry unit. Besides the connection of songs-as-poetry, we analyze their favorites for figurative language, similes, other devices, and rhyme. Also we look at word choice. Songs nowadays don't have vocab like the 60's and 70's. #sunchat
I have been teaching in a Second Grade classroom as part of my methods. We just made a class “big book” (5 feet tall!) discussing citizen qualities in community jobs (social studies). Students got to illustrate (art) and use reading/writing skills. #SunChat
biology- there are so many, I do a climate change project every year. The lens of the projec can vary but this umbrella is cross-curricular in nature. #sunchat
That would be interesting for the students to compare the vocab in music from the past and current. hmmm interesting to me too.. I might do that with my students. thanks for the idea!!! #sunchat
Explore the science of publishing: chemicals used for ink, making paper, binding books, inventions to spread the written word, the impact of modern technology. Debate the pros and cons electronic and printed materials. #sunchat
Our 11th grade physics and history teachers do a combined unit - they simulate a battle. Ss have to create the battle field to scale (math) and use projectile motion to design their "guns" and "canons" They love it! #sunchat
Interesting! We have some nice grounds at out school. Would love to get them outside to take in the nature of it. Maybe integrate some photography with writing. #sunchat You have me thinking now...
Our Cross Curricular - Interdisciplinary Teaching -Teaching - Integrated Curriculum page https://t.co/MtiJLHtDd9 My favorite interdisciplinary lesson (explained on the page) was a neighborhood construction project that included Art, Science, Language Arts and Spanish #sunchat
I have been working in a 3rd grade classroom where they are dissecting fiction books (reading), illustrating what they think their characters look like (art), and then understanding the area where their characters live (social studies) #sunchat
I enjoy combining math/ELA/science or Social Studies and getting Ss outside! In this lesson we read book on why leaves change, Ss went on a leaf hunt, used NS measurement to measure/record leaf length, examined leaf with magnifying glass, & journaled about it afterwards! #sunchat
Really? Your kids are already masters of how much a trillion is? Challenge them to write what they would do with one trillion dollars. Give them one class period. I guarantee they have no concept of what a trillion is. #sunchat
Related discipline-connecting ethos via poetry when taking you-can't-write-a-poem-about-that tack. More thoughts: https://t.co/n043LBXhd3 Tongue-in-cheek example: https://t.co/L1yECGUCvw I bet you can't write a poem about water cycle or totalitarianism or quadratics! #sunchat
I have been in a fifth grade classroom for a few weeks as part of my methods. STEM Friday’s have been a great way for us to incorporate multi-curricular lessons into our weeks! I personally would love to see them done more than just Fridays! #sunchat
books re: science topics, lab girl, stiff, the immortal life of henrietta lacks etc. have allowed for read alouds and book clubs to form in my science class. #scichat#sunchat
Hello teachers! Up bright and early!☀️☕️ My first time here. I teach Kindergarten in San Diego. I just integrated Flipgrid into my classroom, any ideas on how you use #flipgrid#sunchat

Absolutely- Ts should not fear this technology that will really allow Ss to grow to the best of THEIR capabilities! Personalized learning at their fingertips! #SunChat#educhat#EDUgladiators#txed#edleadership
Welcome to #sunchat!! I've used @Flipgrid for my younger Ss to report on their Wonder Wall/Genius Hour findings/research - it's an easy way for them to share their 2-3 facts without having to write it out or make a formal presentation.
I mostly integrate ELA skills into my curriculum, especially with primary documents. What is the author's purpose? Who is the audience? Is there bias? How do documents compare? What was happening at the time the doc was written, and how did that influence the doc?
#sunchat

One of my biggest questions when it comes to cross-curricular teaching: How do we incorporate diversity while also trying to cover different subjects across the board? Especially with subjects like math and social studies? #SunChat
Creating a scavenger hunt is great to incorporate gym, fun and problem solving. Hide your quiz questions around the school/campus, students have to find all 10 and respond. Gets them up, working together, moving about, critically thinking to figure out the clues. #sunchat
One of my favorites! Experiments documented by students (recorded) then create ebooks @Buncee@BookCreatorApp using writing skills, hyperlinks, etc. publish and present! Engage students , enhance learning, and extend the activity! #rocktheworldwithwriting@icenter4edu

I try to use charts and graphs as much as possible to help us understand the time and people we are studying. For many students, numbers are a better way to represent change over time.
#sunchat
I always go back to the research piece of higher order thinking. If you assign Ss research based projects, they will lend themselves to this interdisciplinary model. They’ll have to write, read, record & analyze data, etc. What unit are you working on? #sunchat#TXed#educhat

#sunchat there is a great multi-disciplinary & mute-cultural simulation called Ancestor Adventure. It embeds ELA, Math, SS, Science all into one unit where SS study an ancestor from one side of their family. My Ss last year loved this PBL unit of study!
https://t.co/24uvadntKD
@brpage12 Currently I am in a practicum for college and we are always working on new ways to incorporate diversity into our teaching. I’m not teaching a full set unit but recently I’ve been teaching about non-fiction text features. #SunChat
Along with documents, I love using paintings, images, and flags to introduce a topic or to wrap one up. Something I've taken from the Field Museum's teacher training sessions include this chart. It supports critical thinking, background knowledge, etc.
#sunchat
Wow! Thanks for sharing this amazing resource. I see it is for grades 2-4. I wonder if they have similar LPs for older and younger Ss? Can’t wait to investigate further! #sunchat
My 8th grade team is doing our first IDU for Veteran's Day. The students will have an altered schedule and rotate throughout the school for lessons/activities on: statistics and probability, physical training (with veterans from our community), and oral history w/ me.
#sunchat
So far in my placement I have not seen my CE use multicultural education in the classroom! I would love to bring her some ideas of how to incorporate it into lessons. Any ideas for fun ways to incorporate diversity into a reading/writing lesson? #sunchat
There is SO much planned, it is hard to share it all...inventions, technology, veteran benefits. I'm going to focus on how different types of media tell veterans' stories. #sunchathttps://t.co/8qQ0e4k510
In my upper elementary practicum I see a lack of movement among the students. Are there any strategies you would recommend to get a fifth grade class up and moving while still learning? #sunchat
Looking for a classroom culture focused on the PROCESS rather than the result? MATH TALK leveled materials that will get those kids focused on LEARNING! Great for grades 3-12! https://t.co/t8F46Y8dap#mathchat#sunchat#educhat#elemchat
We'll watch Nat Geo's Field of Honor video on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, then tour Arlington on our iPads via Google Earth. We'll read poems, analyze paintings, listen to interviews via Story Corps, and ultimate record our own. The day ends with a Veteran Q&A panel #sunchat
Routines and procedures to train Ss to work at their seat of choice. Flexible seating at Ss request- while I’m at small group instruction, my Ss are allowed to sit anywhere they want; they are required to keep working though. Makes a huge difference! #SunChat#txed#edleadership

If @TheKevinMCline or any other teachers would like information on what the math teachers' lessons will look like for Veteran's Day (math and science are working together, SS and ELA together) I'm more that stoked to share our plans. #sunchat

Scavenger hunt. I also review tests by putting matching terms on notecards, give each student a card, and they have to walk around to find who has their connection card. For example, one card says VERB, another says RUN. With 20 kids searching, it makes it fun. #sunchat
On @GoNoodle there are some amazing movement/learning videos that Ss can get moving with while still learning - some of my favorites are from the @BlazerFreshGO guys! My Ss love them and I love all they learn while moving. #sunchat

For me as a SS teacher, a great model for making interdisciplinary lessons are @BackStoryRadio episodes. This episode on the history of whaling talked economics, social mobility, music, literature. #sunchathttps://t.co/kyPGXtf6Yo
At what age do you think making rap songs would be appropriate? I am in second grade right now for my placement and I wanted to know if second graders would be able to do this? #sunchat
Just checked out GoNoodle. fun stuff! I will definitely use @GoNoodle in my lessons. I have heard about them but haven't taken the time to check them out. thanks for mentioning them again. #sunchat
