A1: We align in a staggered 4 - 3 - 3 - 2. It creates great angles and triangles to allow a variety of different returns.

A1 5-3-3, maximum coverage of field. See way too many squib kicks.
#SpecialForcesChat

May 26 @ 9:10 PM EDT
A1: Prefer 4-1-2-2-2
#SpecialForcesChat
canfbchat
May 26 @ 9:11 PM EDT
A1) I've kept it balanced. Seen too often overload to the side ball is kicked = no wide side contain
#SpecialForcesChat
canfbchat
May 26 @ 9:12 PM EDT
Go 3-2-3-2-2. Have the 2 on the second line only 5 yards back. Prevents any huge holes for a possible onside kick

@Midgetfb99
Does this give you any trouble with "open areas" behind the front 5?

Good though!

Normally no, have them up fairly tight because of all the ground balls. Don't sacrifice field position.
#SpecialForcesChat
CoachJGaudio
May 26 @ 9:14 PM EDT
We will also adjust slightly based on a hash or middle of field KO.

Q2: For blocking purposes, do you have a counting system or do you get your guys to an area and "wedge" block who comes?
#SpecialForcesChat
canfbchat
May 26 @ 9:19 PM EDT
Have a specific man. Will change week to week based on oppositions kick off team. Allows players to take responsibility.

Midgetfb99

@dropmechanix
A2 Number them up, eliminates guessing on who you need to block.
#SpecialForcesChat
CoachJGaudio
May 26 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A2: We do both. Certain players will do their counts and block them, the back 3 will setup and run the read wedge.
#SpecialForcesChat
CoachJGaudio
May 26 @ 9:22 PM EDT
We have a chart and write down the players' numbers of L1, R1 ect.We know where breakdown is based on # that makes tackle

Great thought to know who the playmakers are on Kick Off.

So if L1 is #33 and that is your LG responsibility - and he makes the tackle, we know where bust came from and correct it

Q3: If you count, how do you handle KO Teams that bunch them all in together and spread out on kick?

Will bunch the front line (5 people) and spread out as they spread out. Based on scouting will know how they'll likely be

5 2 2 1 1... align our 5 5 yards deeper than normal get a forward start for blocks. Allows for my best 2 ball carriers
#SpecialForcesChat

May 26 @ 9:32 PM EDT
To be able to find the ball, also makes my back 4 communicate more, leading to more consistent returns
#SpecialForcesChat
CoachJGaudio
May 26 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A3: Makes no difference to us as we get a deep drop 20-25 yards before we engage them. Will sort itself out.

A2) We count 1-5 on each side, K does not count unless he covers, then we designate a non-contributor

A3 They still need to go 5-5 or 6-4, teach them in practice how to quickly find their responsibility.

May 26 @ 9:34 PM EDT
A3 cont: However, we will have some special setups and returns that punish teams that don't expand well.

Q4: Do you prefer sideline or middle returns? Why?
#SpecialForcesChat
CoachJGaudio
May 26 @ 9:41 PM EDT
A4: Sideline/Hash return...always. Forces better leverage and wider seams for teams that don't maintain lane integrity.
#SpecialForcesChat
Midgetfb99
May 26 @ 9:42 PM EDT
@dropmechanix
A4: Middle, stay with the best blockers. Play in lots of bad weather, less risky.
#SpecialForcesChat
CoachJGaudio
May 26 @ 9:42 PM EDT
A4 cont: Also makes 2-3 KO players on opposite side of the field useless.

Q5: What does your onside "Hands" team look like? Alignment? Why?
#SpecialForcesChat
CoachJGaudio
May 26 @ 9:50 PM EDT
A5: We have a general alignment of 5 upfront guys and 5 more behind them, 5 yards back..based on KO align, we adjust
#SpecialForcesChat
Midgetfb99
May 26 @ 9:50 PM EDT
@dropmechanix
A5: 5-5-1, best 11 hands guys regardless of position. Speedster on the back end just in case!

Have 1 deep returner, 6 in the front line and 5 in the gaps of those 6, 5 yards back. Will adjust to match the Ko team.
#SpecialForcesChat

May 26 @ 9:51 PM EDT
There's always one directly in front of the kicker as that's the easiest onside kick to recover
#SpecialForcesChat

May 26 @ 9:52 PM EDT
A5) 1 deep returner, 6 in the front row and 5, 5 yards behind. Adjust to match the Ko team numbers on either side.

May 26 @ 9:53 PM EDT
A5: 5 up front, 4 in the "Windows" 5 yds. behind. Shift 2 LT or RT window based on onside kick direction. 1 deep Rtnr.
#SpecialForcesChat

May 26 @ 9:53 PM EDT
A5) Need to have 1 directly in front of the kicker though to take away the middle onside
