Hi Everyone - excited to guest host this Spring Edition of #formativechat tonight along side @Rdene915 and @davidwkwan ! Please take a few minutes to introduce yourself and see who is joining us 👋🏼
A1: In my pre-student teaching experiences I have seen students more aware of their role in learning and this has resulted in their motivation skyrocketing. Success and struggles should not be a secret but a conversation between a teacher and a student! #formativechat
Awesome group of educators joining us tonight! Now time for question 1️⃣ ...
Q1: Bloom! What are some improvements you have seen in your students because of your use of formative assessment? #formativechat
Love this. And further, successes and failures should not be reflected by a number or letter. Should be a dialogue and continued beyond finality of just one assignment! #formativechat
A1 I see Ss willing to take risks and grow as learners. They are more in charge of their learning and not only utilize feedback but ask for specific feedback to help them grow #formativechat
A1: Improvements that I have seen with my Ss with the use of formative assessment is their willingness to try, learn, and redo because nothing’s final. #formativechat
A1: I have seen more ownership of learnin; Ss requesting feedback and acting on it; Increased engagement. Bunus, increase in critical thinking protocols and risk taking. #formativechat
Awesome group of educators joining us tonight! Now time for question 1️⃣ ...
Q1: Bloom! What are some improvements you have seen in your students because of your use of formative assessment? #formativechat
During my time spent in the classroom I have noticed that formative assessments help students take charge of their learning and taking personal responsibility for growth and improvement. It really helps put students in charge of their learning! #formativechat
A2: As a developing teacher, I want to continue to work on is coming up with different methods of formative assessment that aren't the status quo and that can fit many different types of students. Participating in chats is one way I am currently trying to learn! :) #formativechat
A1 - Students can truly see the improvements they are making. Building that high degree of confidence is a requirement for higher level learning. #formativechat
A1: Once my ss realize that they can resubmit assignments to show progress, they tend to focus more on the learning process and having fun during projects rather than their grade. But it takes until after Christmas for them to stop asking, “will this be graded?! #formativechat
A1. Students are much less focused on the finality of one test or project. Students are becoming much more focused on the process of learning. Need to be more intentional about making those opportunities to reflect. #formativechat
Awesome group of educators joining us tonight! Now time for question 1️⃣ ...
Q1: Bloom! What are some improvements you have seen in your students because of your use of formative assessment? #formativechat
A1 Ss have a better understanding of where they are in the learning process They can see where they've been & what they have to learn going forward #formativechat
A1 Because I'm using more formative assessments, I have better data on my students' growth. I am able to see problems much sooner than when I only used summative assessements. #formativechat
A1: In HS writing workshop (new for me this semester), students are asking questions on how to improve, and I feel we’re (slowly) moving from “How do I get a better grade” to “What do I still need to learn?”
#formativechat
Awesome group of educators joining us tonight! Now time for question 1️⃣ ...
Q1: Bloom! What are some improvements you have seen in your students because of your use of formative assessment? #formativechat
A1 My instruction is more geared towards individual needs as I don't assume but assess prior knowledge, we confer on how we are doing, and students know what to do next #formativechat
A1 - See more risk taking and having them asking when the @goformative will be up so they can check for understanding and get instant feedback. They like that and are becoming better at taking control of own learning got it or ask more questions #formativechat
Awesome group of educators joining us tonight! Now time for question 1️⃣ ...
Q1: Bloom! What are some improvements you have seen in your students because of your use of formative assessment? #formativechat
Formative assessments have a profound impact on how I pace my course. We need to provide students with ample time to master concepts. Students should control the pace they work at and we need to adjust our long term plans to meet their needs when appropriate #formativechat
A1: We use iReady as a universal screener and a benchmark assessment. Provides useful reliable and valid data on student abilities that supplements classroom assessments. Gives us a good picture of students and allows us to plan instruction accordingly #formativechat
A2: I am trying to be more explicit in what individual ss know and don’t know. I want to create rubrics for each and every assign. So they know what they know and need to work on. In the pieces of making a checklist of objectives to cross off for each ss too. #formativechat
A3: One way to inspire growth mindsets in your students would be to practice it yourself. Show your students how a growth mindset works by thinking out loud. As a teacher nothing you do is perfect but showing them that you know how to come back from it is great! #formativechat
A3: I want to continue to acknowledge my errors and methods that don't necessarily benefit the student. As I soon enter student teaching, I plan to embrace these mistakes and use the constructive criticism I receive to grow as an educator. #formativechat

Ss take more ownership of their learning. I see this when students ask for clarification of points they do not understand during different types of formative assessments. #formativechat
Increased in critical thinking and risk taking in the classroom is great! I have not read about increased critical thinking from formative assessment, but I can see how it would help. #formativechat#gen2108
A1: During my pre-student teaching experiences, I have seen my students improve in many areas because I am able to put a focus on students that are not understanding the material right away. I am able to eliminate any confusion from the get go. #formativechat
A1 - Well done formative assessments shape future learning. Seeing what students truly know builds a bridge to PBL type instruction and also risk taking students. #formativechat
A1 In my inclusion math class we use re-test for all quizzes and some tests. Some of my Ss who generally shut down test time now trust that they get a second chance or third or whatever they need to understand the concept. It's formative and effective. #formativechat
Love the idea of using @Screencastify to give audio feedback on an essay, project, presentation, etc..With GSuite, you can drop the link right back in doc or in Google Classroom #formativechat
In reply to
@doyleama8, @DMooreSpanish, @Screencastify
I like the phrase of assessing not assuming. I will think of formative assessment in that way from now on. It reminds the teacher that there may be holes in previous learning. #formativechat#gen2108
How do your teachers incorporate into their instruction time? As 8th grade teachers, the pressure to engage and challenge isn’t working for us #formativechat
The excitement around Ss improvements has been inspiring to read about! Now for question 2️⃣.
Q2: Time for some spring cleaning! What is something that you want to work on when it comes to formative assessment? What’s one step you can take in the right direction? #formativechat
A1 Formative assessment empowers students to understand themselves and take charge if their learning. The work is about more than a grade. They see growth and want to keep growing.
#formativechat
A1) Formative assessments shape and inform instruction. Hence, they allow me to gauge what concepts I need to spend more time teaching when delivering instruction. Formative assessments allow me to gauge student understanding in a variety of ways #FormativeChat
A1 | Formative assessment through feedback, has given my students the ability to learn how failure is an essential component of success. When you give meaning feedback to students, they can grow in their understanding! #formativechat
A2: I want to work on Ss giving their own feedback to others more. MP4 is a great time! Ss need to see how they can teach and help others grow too. #formativechat
A2-I want to use different methods of assessing students, focusing on different learning styles. I also want to use more flexible grouping in my classroom. #formativechat
A1 I have noticed Ss are more likely to read the feedback if it is immediately given back to them, and they don't have to read my handwriting. Many Ss ask me if they can retake it, now that they understand what they didn't understand before. #formativechat
I had the same struggle last year, made some changes to classroom layout, use stations, less me, more them, actually doing a keynote tomorrow on engagement #formativechat
A2: One thing I want to work on is taking away deadlines for every assessment. Ss should want to prove their understanding in a way that builds their confidence when ready #formativechat
A2: Formative assessments should include metacognition. Class is less about learning content and more about learning how to problem solve and synthesize new information. Students need to reflect on the learning process regularly to see enduring change. #formativechat
A2 be deliberate with my FAs. Sometimes I just do it because I have nothing to show parents. I need to make FAs meaningful and purposeful #formativechat
A2: The conundrum for me has always been giving timely feedback to all Ss as they work. This has been solved for most things by using @goformative. Still having some issues during #PBL since their work is so diff that I sometimes have to learn myself #formativechat
A2 Using formative data better to inform planning in the moment! Group and move forward with students grouping during the lesson rather than post lesson. #formativechat
A2. I need to incorporate more Ss self assessment. It’s a valuable tool and I use it, but not as much as I should. We do a lot of goal setting and it would be great to let Ss track and decide when they’ve achieved their goals #formativechat
A2 I am slowly getting familiar with @goformative. I need to get going on learning it but there aren't enough hours in the day. I need to get @gsteppen to give me some lessons. #formativechat
A2: Def need to work on the data analysis part with teachers more. Teachers need more training on what to look for in the data. This will help for RtI purposes as teachers use Tier 1 interventions and refer students for Tiers 2 and 3 #formativechat
A2: I want to make my formative assessments more formal. This will allow me to get data from my students that can be recorded and tracked. #formativechat#gen2108
A2 I would really like to work on #peerassessment more as part of #formativeassessment. Getting the students to buy into helping each other out to solve, struggle, and provide feed'forward' getting there but still not even close to where I know it could be #formativechat
The excitement around Ss improvements has been inspiring to read about! Now for question 2️⃣.
Q2: Time for some spring cleaning! What is something that you want to work on when it comes to formative assessment? What’s one step you can take in the right direction? #formativechat
A2 I need to be more deliberate with getting them back timely feedback ALL the time. Digital has helped a lot, especially with automatic return #formativechat
The excitement around Ss improvements has been inspiring to read about! Now for question 2️⃣.
Q2: Time for some spring cleaning! What is something that you want to work on when it comes to formative assessment? What’s one step you can take in the right direction? #formativechat
A2: I want to better use formative tools like @GetKahoot@quizizz etc... Not just to review but as an intro, "blind-style".. Formative pre-assessment #formativechat
A2 I'm excited by the tremendous effort of Ts I get to work w/ & support for incorporating formative assessments into their learning experiences on a daily basis & using a CFAs & their data to adjust instruction #formativechat
Great plan. They also need to grow cognizant of their own strengths and weaknesses as well. Have them set goals for themselves, track progress, then reflect on why they did or didn’t achieve their goals #formativechat
A2 I am slowly getting familiar with @goformative. I need to get going on learning it but there aren't enough hours in the day. I need to get @gsteppen to give me some lessons. #formativechat
A2 - As we move towards more student choice, the difficulty in assessing vast differences in work is challenging. I’ve had students develop their own tools for assessing their work. Also, startibgcslow has helped greatly. #formativechat
I love the idea of allowing students to critique each other. Peer review is a great process that should be included in more classes. #formativechat#gen2108
A2: Fine tune ways to share formative data with parents so it is clear and doesn’t appear as a summative. Difficult because this isn’t the way we were assessed as students. #formativechat
A2 | Quick, meaningful feedback has been my biggest push this year in regards to assessment. It's most purposeful when it's given as in the moment as possible, so using tech to support this, has been key. Still working on it, though! #formativechat
That is the benefit of the tech tools, and also having stations in class, gives me so much more time to interact/instruct and learn with them each day #formativechat
A2) To keep finding new, innovative, and unique ways that allow me to utilize formative assessments to inform my instruction in pruposeful ways #FormativeChat
Yes on the elementary level for our 3rd grader, because we’re much more connected with the teacher and staff. It’s different beyond elementary: Our 8th grader, hard to say. We learn about what she’s learning and doing but not so much HOW she’s doing along the way. #formativechat
We do have to be careful when designing any formative assessment. Are we measuring what a student knows? Or is it what they can explain, analyze and demonstrate? We’d like to have the 2nd option, but this takes time, patience and failure. #formativechat
A2 I am slowly getting familiar with @goformative. I need to get going on learning it but there aren't enough hours in the day. I need to get @gsteppen to give me some lessons. #formativechat
I think it’s OK if they want good grades. I mean, if we got grades, we’d want A’s too! But we can still help them define learning goals alongside their status goals. #formativechat
Thank you Mariana! We just sped up our student response saving time by 30%. This mean live responses just got MORE LIVE and you have more time to provide this timely feedback :) #formativechat
Always good to do a little self-reflecting - great responses! Lastly, question 3️⃣.
Q3: Spring is all about growth! What are things you can do to carry a growth mindset as a teacher and inspire a growth mindset in your students? #formativechat
A2: I want to work on new ways to give formative assessments. To take a step in the right direction I will keep researching and asking for advice from my cooperating teachers as I start to student teach. Any new ideas for formative assessments? #formativechat@ErinEdgington
I like the idea of providing meaningful feedback. I feel that so often my feedback for my middle school math students lacks enough depth to have much meaning. #gen2108#formativechat
Always good to do a little self-reflecting - great responses! Lastly, question 3️⃣.
Q3: Spring is all about growth! What are things you can do to carry a growth mindset as a teacher and inspire a growth mindset in your students? #formativechat
A3: As a T, I try to think that Ss are continually growing and learning much like me as the T. There is always room for growth and learning from that growth through perseverance. #formativechat
A3 This year I am really trying to embody Growth Mindset in my classroom. Allowing retakes, not grading practice, honoring their process and letting them go at their own speed. #formativechat
Yeah, there’s an assumption that increased independence should mean decreased parent involvement, which doesn’t make sense to me. Why I prefer the broader term “family engagement.” #formativechat
A3-Always be positive about student growth/progress. Even if a S is not engaged in class or does not show much effort, find something to make a big deal about at some point. Break down the wall of disengagement. #formativechat
A3: Make sure your grading system prioritizes reflection, revision and reassessment. Learning does not stop, neither should the assessment process #formativechat
A3: Model it. When giving feedback, ask questions that facilitate it (e.g. What made you try that? What might you do differently next time?). #formativechat
A3: Being kind to ourselves. It’s tough giving personalized feedback to everyone. Some days will be better than others. It takes time (and a lot of patience) to turn the assessment boat around. #formativechat
A3: I always ask for feedback after each unit. I ask whether they liked and learned from each activity we did. We talk about what I can change for the next unit. I also rarely say no to them when they propose something to me. #formativechat
I like the idea of also incorporating learning goals. So often students in my school just think about passing standardized tests and grades. #gen2108#formativechat
A3: I’m continually reading and scrolling Twitter to realize there is so much to learn and tweak to optimize my Ss’ learning. In turn, allowing Ss to engage formatively and revise writing inspires their #growthmindset#formativechat
Always good to do a little self-reflecting - great responses! Lastly, question 3️⃣.
Q3: Spring is all about growth! What are things you can do to carry a growth mindset as a teacher and inspire a growth mindset in your students? #formativechat
A3: A simple and dumb reminder. At the front and back of my room I have a big poster hat simply reads YET. It works when either the kids or I am getting frustrated to point it out as in "patience, we cannot do it yet!" #formativechat
A3 I'm at a new school this year and the way I use FA instead of homework and flip my lessons is different. it's been hard. I need to keep a #growthmindset and keep going. It pays off! #formativechat
A3: Consistent encouragement is important, but it must be realistic and constructive. Important for students to set their own learning goals and really learn how they learn. Then you will see real #GrowthMindset take hold #formativechat
A3 - This comes back to your instructional goals. A growth mindset involves retraining our brains to what we were taught. This is also try for students. Persistence, patience and a positive outlook are all key. It can never be a one and done cure. #formativechat
Yes, agreed. I always think of Rita Pierson's TED Talk, she marked a Ss quiz as +2 instead of -18, bc that told him he was on his way, a -18 would completely defeat him, #formativechat
The older Ss get the more involvement, not enabling, Ss need from parents, just in a diff manner It needs to be more of a #HandsOffEyesOn approach #formativechat
A3 Gotta practice what you preach. Can always get better. Embrace the challenges. Celebrate failures. Line yourself up with inspiring people like on #formativechat for inspiration and ideas. Enjoy the journey. Having a good sense of humor also goes a long way in my opinion.
Always good to do a little self-reflecting - great responses! Lastly, question 3️⃣.
Q3: Spring is all about growth! What are things you can do to carry a growth mindset as a teacher and inspire a growth mindset in your students? #formativechat
I have been crafting learning targets for each unit that each assignment aligns to. It’s a start in the right direction to have Ss focus on big idea skills, not just a single task #formativechat
A3: As a T, I try to think that Ss are continually growing and learning much like me as the T. There is always room for growth and learning from that growth through perseverance. #formativechat
A2. The word of the year for me is INTENTIONALITY. I want to more intentionally and strategically plan formative assessment and more intentionally allow this to inform my future instruction. #formativechat
The excitement around Ss improvements has been inspiring to read about! Now for question 2️⃣.
Q2: Time for some spring cleaning! What is something that you want to work on when it comes to formative assessment? What’s one step you can take in the right direction? #formativechat
A3 I can lead by example. I will learn @goformative and show my students that you can always find time to get something worthwhile completed. #formativechat
A3-Continuing to be a lifetime learner helps teachers maintain a growth mindset and to model a growth mindset in their classes as well. Keeping current with technology also helps with a growth mindset. #formativechat
A3) Embrace the power of yet! Praise effort and encourage positivity. All of the above will help create a positive learning environment as well #FormativeChat
We are so happy that we are going to be a part of this endeavor! That mentality is why we believe it's so important to not require students to press "submit" to share their thinking! Thinking is a process! #formativechat
A3: As I enter my student teaching experience, I think that bringing new and engaging things into the classroom will inspire my students to grow over the year not only as a student but as a person. #differentiation#relationshipsmatter@ErinEdgington#formativechat
A3 I often share my struggles with my students. They see me editing, reading my work out loud, sticking post-it’s everywhere, giving myself the occasionally talk, asking them for feedback – I’m a work in progress too! #formativechat
#formativechat A3: Offer re-assessment. Over ANY topic, at ANY time of the year. Learning is a conversation. Once Ts cut off the chance for learning to be acknowledged, the conversation stops.
Give me the S that knows it in May, not November.
Yup. I had them in my Science class for four years (grades 5 - 8). Made me a better teacher simply because I kept planning with them in mind. Now, I just picture one or two as how would student A respond to this #formativechat
As we wrap up this exciting #formativechat , we'd love to give a huge shout-out to Formative Certified Educator @carasenger ! It was her first time hosting the chat and she did an amazing job!
It will change your life. I love using @goformative for labs and non MC FAs. I can really see Ss thinking in their responses, and give feedback. #formativechat
In reply to
@goformative, @loliveira55, @goformative
A1-Ss refer to them in discussions and to the feedback I write. They also refer back to the mistakes AND successes later in the unit or in future units. Silent victories! #formativechat
Mark your calendars: #Bunceechat is back April 12th @ 8 PM EST, and this time - we're handing it over to the students! Join us as @Rdene915 & her high school students lead us in a discussion on student voice!
I have gamified my classroom and as part of this I don't have a grade book (other than the district mandated one). My students are instead on a leaderboard as in a game #formativechat
A3 I can lead by example. I will learn @goformative and show my students that you can always find time to get something worthwhile completed. #formativechat
Always good to do a little self-reflecting - great responses! Lastly, question 3️⃣.

A1-Ss refer to them in discussions and to the feedback I write. They also refer back to the mistakes AND successes later in the unit or in future units. Silent victories! #formativechat
A3 - I see at the secondary level a general lack of risk taking. We’ve become so enamored with letters and percentages, that growth is left behind. Building that mindset begins on day 1, not after 4 months of school. We are all habit lovers. Build the habit early! #formativechat
So true. But many still need hands on. Problem is many don’t know how to be involved appropriately. Every child is different and parents need guidance from admin, teachers, and support staff on how to be involved
Thanks for the opportunity! I had a blast reading and responding to so many amazing educators that are so passionate about what they do! #formativechat
As we wrap up this exciting #formativechat , we'd love to give a huge shout-out to Formative Certified Educator @carasenger ! It was her first time hosting the chat and she did an amazing job!
Thank you for a wonderful, fast chat that keeps me thinking and on my toes! I will be thinking about how to improve things in the coming weeks! Have a wonderful week! Stay positive! #formativechat
Thanks everyone. Appreciate the comments, ideas, and willingness to get better. Your students are lucky to have you as teachers. Have a great week. #formativechat
A3 | I believe this is all about modeling. Our students' attitudes towards concepts are more often than not, a mirror of our own attitude! If I can show them that i'm psyched to edit their writing, they will hopefully do the same., and make it meaningful. #formativechat
