First time joining . Look forward to learning some great ideas!

Old question, I know, but it just came up again. and ? Anyone have anything more specific than 4.6?
Parents should walk into the school and see that learning is joyful.
My experience says it's the former. Ts can shut their doors and use new pedagogy, but admins struggle to force it on Ts.
Maybe we should define conservative educator and progressive educator for this discussion.
I would argue a progressive staff because real, sustainable change occurs from the bottom up. Also admin come & go.
There is always push back whenever the admins try to start something different in the school.
I think there has to be a mutual respect between the two. If either As or Ts are progressive w/in a vacuum, change won't happen
It's all about admin. Teachers inherently want greatness. If an admin is willing to encourage/support risk taking, Ts will follow.
I think there are good examples of admins that changed schools or districts right here.
That was my first thought as well but there are administrators who are dynamic leaders who are the change they lead,
As inspire the change, Ts make it happen, and then As should encourage, support, and celebrate successes.
Change is hard, but the person or people driving the change have to really believe in it for it to spread.
Which came first - the chicken or the egg??
is it hard for admins to notice changes in the classroom?
and even then it doesn't always work. :/
The discussion is taking place now, so Please refrain from using the hashtag for t6he remaining hour, unless you are in the chat.

It shouldn't be if they are involved As, ones that spend time with Ts and Ss.
I suspect the person wanting change is the one who will drive it, regardless of their role at school.
Neither is ideal if we are operating under the assumption conservative and progressive are opposites https://t.co/kyEuRXta3k
Topic:What fosters greater change for edu a conservative admin w/a progressive staff, or a progressive admin w/a conservative staff?
Admins need to try and keep there feet on the ground by doing regular learning walks ect
I think that the system itself promotes conservatism on the part of Admins. Less rocking of the boat is easier.
Many school admins read and are into innovation, while many Ts just want to reread Hamlet again as PD.
I don't disagree, but the challenge for Ts having the time, resources and support to encourage others to do the same.
In my eyes, that's part of what good As do!
Awesome:MT -Story of how I used professional wrestling to boost achievement in ECE Classroom. https://t.co/kf7myBAlzZ
yes, we need to do a better job of making the time to share what we are doing with each other in school.
do you think there is a disconnect between what educators think pd is and what it really should be?
. I think a lot of the changes come from further up the chain than what can be seen in schools, and that takes too long
I agree 100%. For some schools/districts, that itself is a progressive idea.
Ts & SLT are sometimes afraid from taking risks due to excessive amounts of accountability
Buy in is big. Alot of my younger tchrs have been taught old school.
Jumping in on this - YES. Recently had upset As because it wasn't a 'sit and get' PD. Ts loved it.
In my (indep.) school, we have very broad PD definition. Hope colleagues do things they like + things that challenge.
truly great admins notice the change in the classroom AND in the students themselves.
People want everything to change as long as they don't have to. That is a big obstacle
that is a conversation I have had with my team as well.
How many admin W actual teaching experience? Too much = INITIATIVE FATIGUE
That's awesome and encouraging! Good for your school!
We are still putting out new teachers trained for a 20th Century classroom.
Too many admin only interested in = saving their butts/jobs .
I understand that's a real problem in some public school districts. Not a problem where I teach. Admins are master Ts.
Are teachers/admins less likely to innovate if their district emphasizes test scores (or data collection)?
Maybe the Ts doing the mentoring need to try and be more progressive?
Innovation cannot occur without base knowledge and already sound teaching practices. Promoting innovation can be cart before horse
I do think this is a fear, esp if evals are tied to it.
Learning to#appsmash with - Great ideas!!!
For real change to occur, someone needs to take a risk. Risk takers are our leaders. Doing what has always worked eventually fails
The accountability conundrum - we must have it - but how can we leverage it for improvement over stress https://t.co/tfBx1LPsRB
I do think this is a fear, esp if evals are tied to it.
. yes, it's easy to stick to the traditional and only change things up if the numbers don't come back well.
Often the knowledge base could be taught in a more progressive way, less chalk and talk
Learning to with - Great ideas!!!
We need skill work, but it shouldn't always looked like a worksheet.
Unfortunately lessons and activities when outstanding progress is made take time
. On the other hand, it's a way to fix what isn't working. But the focus should be on retaining info, not cramming
Agree- not sure CnT is even sound anymore - but I do believe a base must exist before innovation occurs https://t.co/bJ0aNMgf0n
Often the knowledge base could be taught in a more progressive way, less chalk and talk
Too often we try to change policies rather than start w/culture. Change culture & all else follows.
Drucker says it best - culture eats strategy for breakfast https://t.co/DhHfK4su6t
Too often we try to change policies rather than start w/culture. Change culture & all else follows.
if you can cram for a test and pass it, the test probably wasn't particularly good anyway.
This, to me at least, only reemphasizes the importance of the idea of multiple measures in evals. https://t.co/AMfYmlss3N
I do think this is a fear, esp if evals are tied to it.
yes! We need to change who we are and what we believe before making willy nilly plans
Agreed, Admin have more resources but Ts are most aware of challenges in classroom & are more receptive to ideas from Ts
I hate seeing dead eyed students because the t has been lecturing for an hour
Many more new Products using Smart Technologies.. Future in Programming is higher
A revision over time culture needs to be cultivated
wondering how you define “assessment” in this case?
should integrated into all areas of learning! https://t.co/s9DttvSODv
For too long "Creativity" in school has been silo'd to "Arts." That is part of problem. is rich, real & all around us
funny thing is culture can be changed pretty quickly when the the leader decides to lead.
Yes, start with what we value! If we can agree on that, everything can grow out of it.
I think it's a combination of authentic reflection AND objective assessments by students and teachers.
I don’t think enough of us naturally start here. We see what we want and try to skip that important step!
It's goodbye from us for another day 👍🏻
I think most of us believe tweaking stuff is enough, often it isn't.
Really incredible admins are so immersed in culture of school/class & guiding vision that = assessment
Culture is often determined by behavior leaders allow to continue uncecked. Hurts morale
And yet, sadly when it comes time to spend $$ it tends to be on tweaks rather than starting with values.
some of culture is definitely what is allowed
are great learners. If you we ever stop learning, we better find a new line of work.

read! Read a journal, read a trade book, read a blog, read kid-lit, READ something!
We rarely ask WHY we're doing something & effects on learning; instead focus on HOW it will be implemented
innovation, imagination, consistency, an ability to cultivate good relationships and a good sense of humour helps
write! Write about what you are doing in your classroom, what you are reading, WRITE!
Whether change is bottom up or top down it is obvious that the status quo is not serving education well as we move forward.
Exactly! Maybe this is an outflow of valuing test scores and ranking rather than valuing students?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, ! https://t.co/N74sqfbPd2
innovation, imagination, consistency, an ability to cultivate good relationships and a good sense of humour helps
The big thing with successful is taking the time for PD days so it's ready to be taught
The potential effects on student progress need assessing before anything is implemented
reflect on their teaching practice. What is working? What needs to change? How should it change?
DEAR Time … Drop Everything And REFLECT! Great idea!!
There should no longer be any ed-tech. It is all learning with different tools. Learning is learning.
12 StoryWriter Books Just Published!! Congrats to Jessica Irwin & the teachers & students at Central Elementary!
I think we hope the answer is outside of us and not inside of us. :/
I disagree, there are different types of learning and different types work for different Ss
No child is born racist, but where does the racial separation occur and what role do teachers have in it? https://t.co/GtrOCRfT9J
The 1st time you hear a speech/presentation should not be the day it is delivered in class. Use PhotoBooth & hear them practice.
Yes and the tools may differ, but we use tools in conjunction w/learning not separate & apart.

Learning Curve = webinars, apps, software, devices, hardware etc. OVERWHELMING ! .
. Adults who control their learning will take it a step at a time as needed. Of course the big pic is always too much
And HOW MANY classrooms has he taught actual students? Soon suburban Ts will be like urban Ts OVERWHELMED
I don’t disagree, but I tend to think of assessment in very different terms than most :)
We get caught up in valuing the product more than the process of learning in educator. Embrace the grind. https://t.co/0UWmEd8qoH
. Adults who control their learning will take it a step at a time as needed. Of course the big pic is always too much
Yes, that is the point. Tech is a tool not a separate subject to be taught Do we teach Car-tech to learn to drive?
The best way to ensure good implementation is to give proper training and . Build Ts up to make the new things useful
No, but we have drivers ed
Genius! https://t.co/efewNd3Ldt
Set up a class hashtag... it and share that link out to parents as a newsletter! YES!
Something to think about. The most affluent districts & attendance zones are certainly not taking "all kids" https://t.co/3EmL0EZPaD
If we assign something and receive very similar products - it was a recipe, not an engaging assignment forcing thought
Those who are ALLOWED to guide their own path- YES! However, WHO is actually DETERMINING the Big Picture?
The key to all of this is to maintain relevance through authentic & personal PD, social media & PLN's
It's the same- DE is something that helps open the door to a different way of learning other than getting on the road

I agree, but Ts and As alike need to be encouraged and supported through those uncomfortable change.
