  • DrHarrisonMcCoy Nov 13 @ 9:11 PM EST
  • juneritchlin Nov 13 @ 9:11 PM EST
#txeduchat In my opinion digital equity for all is the equalizing of access to digital devices and online resources both at home and at school.
  • DrAaronSwitzer Nov 13 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1: Student access to technology that supports learning is not limited to those whose families have the means to provide the technology on their own. #txeduchat
  • kelsoek Nov 13 @ 9:12 PM EST
#txeduchat #castleberryisd A2 In Castleberry ISD, we are in phase 2 of our DE4A project. We are installing 3 towers to broadcast our own safe/filtered Internet to Ss at home. Tower 1 is up and running with tower 2 already being installed. More info here: https://t.co/PcSpb5utz7
  • StephMartinezFW Nov 13 @ 9:12 PM EST
A2: When kids take devices home, filtered access is necessary to ensure the device is being used to redesign the educational experience. Otherwise, it is just being used at the substitutive level, doing the same old teaching & learning, w/ a fancy new device #txeduchat
  • TyWoodCISD Nov 13 @ 9:12 PM EST
A2: Narrowing the divide is important because our society is changing. Our students will all be immersed in a world that is dependent on technology. #txeduchat #castleberryisd
  • faulknerr Nov 13 @ 9:12 PM EST
A2 You can survey students and find your hotspot areas and extend your district WiFi network to their homes. Here is one solution: #txeduchat https://t.co/iGVNJdCjls
  • MrsFarney Nov 13 @ 9:12 PM EST
Hi. Lori Farney. Computer Science teacher at Caleberry ISD’s middle school. #txeduchat
  • castillojenn2 Nov 13 @ 9:12 PM EST
A1: Digital Equity 4 All means giving the resources to all of our students so that they can have the best education. #txeduchat #AVCato #castleberryisd
  • offenbaker_a Nov 13 @ 9:12 PM EST
You're absolutely right! It is a necessity! Today I was at a local business establishment and they wanted me to unplug and put my cell phone in a locked case type thing. Oddly enough, I met a friend there to collaborate on an online resource with her using a QR code. #txeduchat
    In reply to @StephMartinezFW
  • DrHarrisonMcCoy Nov 13 @ 9:12 PM EST
A2: There have to be some reasonable alternatives for Ss who don't have Internet at home. Sometimes the community has options to offer. Somebody brag on @casteleberryisd ! #txeduchat
  • mosteller_dann Nov 13 @ 9:12 PM EST
A2: As of now, district policy does not allow student chrome books to go home with 4th graders. #txeduchat
  • SheasShannon Nov 13 @ 9:12 PM EST
A2: it does matter which is why CISD has decided to provide internet for all of it’s 1:1 students free of charge. GO CISD! #txeduchat
  • MR_HUTCHINGS Nov 13 @ 9:13 PM EST
A2: In CISD we are 1:1 but that only addresses part of the equity issues for Ss. I'm excited that we are in the second stage of providing safe, filtered internet service so our students can ALL use their devices at home to connect to the content. #txeduchat #castleberryisd
  • StevenRiewe Nov 13 @ 9:13 PM EST
A2: Create surveys and collect data in order to determine a plan of action #castleberryisd #txeduchat
  • NikkiMcDorman Nov 13 @ 9:13 PM EST
#txeduchat A2: Our district is incredible in building towers and providing internet access to our students at home! It is incredible to see how much farther teachers can take flipping lessons once all students have access at home.
  • MrsFarney Nov 13 @ 9:13 PM EST
A1: Equity is providing opportunities or students in all socio-economic areas to experience the power of innovation. #txeduchat
  • DenFishe Nov 13 @ 9:14 PM EST
#txeduchat A2 Some districts are providing internet on buses but that is not enough for everyone.
  • DGrayAVCato5 Nov 13 @ 9:14 PM EST
A1: Digital Equity is every student having equal access to technology both at home and at school. #txeduchat #castleberryisd #AVCato
  • cervantezsandy Nov 13 @ 9:14 PM EST
A1:Digital Equity for all is opening a door to Technology in the homes of our families and providing them with the resources to help make their children successful! #txeduchat
  • AlexVKluge Nov 13 @ 9:14 PM EST
A2 Many laptops and tablets have broadband capabilities - some also include filtering and restrictions. #TxEduChat
  • Littleagg Nov 13 @ 9:14 PM EST
A2: it does matter! I am thankful to work in a district that is forward thinking and giving all our students safe internet at home! #txeduchat
  • heatherlamb08 Nov 13 @ 9:15 PM EST
A1 Digital equity is more than a device & a fast internet connection. Working w/ various stakeholders, we can provide our community a means to learn to navigate the internet safely, utilize software, & connect relevance to their lives. #castleberryisd #txeduchat
  • offenbaker_a Nov 13 @ 9:15 PM EST
A2: This is one of the biggest hurdles we face in #CastleberryISD. But thanks to our #DigitalEquity4All project, that will be resolved. Some districts check out hotspots to Ss, while others extend campus library hours. There is no "one size fits all" solution to this. #txeduchat
  • MBuitronJJE Nov 13 @ 9:16 PM EST
A1: being able to be equal all across the board #joyjames #txeduchat
  • jpryorkinder Nov 13 @ 9:16 PM EST
A2. Putting technology 1:1 into the hands of the students is awesome, but our district is opening doors for students by providing wifi access in their homes! #avcato #castleberryisd #txeduchat
  • DrAaronSwitzer Nov 13 @ 9:16 PM EST
A2: This question almost make me feel guilty because Castleberry is taking this obstacle out of the way with WiFi towers for community access. Without those, it would take more planning to ensure students have what they need before they leave the network. #txeduchat
  • txeduchat - Moderator Nov 13 @ 9:17 PM EST
Question #3 is coming up now. #txeduchat
  • MrsKeelerAVCato Nov 13 @ 9:17 PM EST
Here!🙋🏻‍♀️Sorry for being tardy! A2: It does matter! How lucky we are to work in a district that provides safe internet access to students at home. #txeduchat #AVCato
  • DenFishe Nov 13 @ 9:17 PM EST
#txeduchat Some districts do not have the disparity that others do without access at home. I was discussing this at CAST with other educators.
  • TyWoodCISD Nov 13 @ 9:18 PM EST
A3: Our district is the first in the state of Texas to construct three wireless internet towers that will provide full access to our community from home. #txeduchat #castleberryisd
  • StephMartinezFW Nov 13 @ 9:18 PM EST
A3: Providing free, filtered internet access 4 our Ss w/1:1 devices has impacted homes w/ only mobile. Allowing times 4 parents in labs during registrations & other events 2 check grades, register, or preview post secondary options. #txeduchat https://t.co/xeoBsTMbSE
  • Toups_J Nov 13 @ 9:18 PM EST
#txeduchat A2 If it hinders some of your Ss that don't have technology access at home... your assignment needs to be adjusted... Just my opinion. Ss should have an equal platform to accomplish the same task.
  • juneritchlin Nov 13 @ 9:18 PM EST
A2 Internet access does matter. It opens up doors to a variety of resources and tools that support learning as well as facilitates communication between learners. By providing access to internet both at home and school, 1 to 1 districts can increase learning. #txeduchat
  • JJECounselor Nov 13 @ 9:18 PM EST
A2 Maslow certainly would include digital access in his hierarchy of needs had he lived in the present age. It’s a necessity for communication and competing in the world of work. #txeduchat
  • DGrayAVCato5 Nov 13 @ 9:18 PM EST
A2: I had never heard of a district doing what CISD is doing for their students. @ home or @ school, students receive the best educational experience possible. One of the many reasons it's great to be a part of the district! #txeduchat #castleberryisd #AVCato
  • faulknerr Nov 13 @ 9:19 PM EST
A3. Nearly two-thirds of Americans are now smartphone owners, and for many these devices are a key entry point to the online world according to Pew Research. #txeduchat Are they at a disadvantage? https://t.co/aCOQhg3jY0
  • Matherne_Edu Nov 13 @ 9:19 PM EST
#CastleberryISD will have digital equity for all soon! Take a look below! https://t.co/1aiUZ97cip #txeduchat
  • NikkiMcDorman Nov 13 @ 9:19 PM EST
#txeduchat A3: That was always the tricky part- mobile only, and only certain platforms work, so you had to choose web-based programs for the most part. With kids taking home their devices and available internet access, a lot of those restrictions eased back
  • castillojenn2 Nov 13 @ 9:19 PM EST
A2: It is so important for students to have access at home. Which is why @CastleberryISD is working on installing 3 WiFi towers that will be safe for our students to use at home. #txeduchat #AVCato
  • AlexVKluge Nov 13 @ 9:19 PM EST
A3 You have to ask whether the mobile broadband is fast enough? In many cases (4G) it is. OK, we're spoiled in Austin :) #TxEduChat

#txeduchat A3: CISD libraries provide extended hours and after school programs to promote extended/equal access to resources.
  • sedlacek_maria Nov 13 @ 9:20 PM EST
Our district currently bridges that gap by providing internet at home! As a teacher this allows me to provide my students parents with resources to assist at home! Like access to digital books! It’s definitely important! #txeduchat #avcato #castleberryisd
  • JeremyDBond Nov 13 @ 9:20 PM EST
Interesting claim! And interesting topic... not in Texas but joining out of interest. #TXEduChat

  • DrAaronSwitzer Nov 13 @ 9:20 PM EST
A3: Data networks and their devices have become such a powerful tool that the last few years I did not notice a difference in these families. The issue would arise occasionally with websites that did not have a mobile version but those are becoming more rare. #txeduchat
  • MBuitronJJE Nov 13 @ 9:21 PM EST
A2: we are so blessed as a district that we have towers being placed to cover the entire district for all our families to have internet access. This is so amazing!!! #txeduchat #joyjames
  • Littleagg Nov 13 @ 9:21 PM EST
3: being 1:1 from 4th up, we have taken many barriers away. Some things can’t be accessed on a mobile phone and that is the struggle for some. #txeduchat

Question #4 is here now. #txeduchat
  • mendezdaniela24 Nov 13 @ 9:23 PM EST
A2: I am so lucky to work for a district that is providing students with WIFI at home. Giving students internet access, empowers them to explore a variety of topic and extend their knowledge outside of the classroom. #txeduchat #AVC
  • kelsoek Nov 13 @ 9:24 PM EST
#txeduchat #castleberryisd A4 Providing both genders equal access beyond the school walls allows all students to continue exploring, tinkering, and collaborating on STEM activities on their own time.
  • TyWoodCISD Nov 13 @ 9:24 PM EST
A4: Digital equity eliminates gender discrimination by allowing for all students to pursue their digital passions #txeduchat #castleberryisd
  • StephMartinezFW Nov 13 @ 9:24 PM EST
A4: Allowing the freedom 2 explore, create, share & be inspired goes a long way in not just bridging the gap, but blurring the lines between gender stereotypes. Often Ss get pigeonholed into certain gender roles & STEM allows them 2 explore multi avenues #txeduchat
  • doctormomof3 Nov 13 @ 9:24 PM EST

  • courtdlcftworth Nov 13 @ 9:25 PM EST
A3: Many of our families in our district only had mobile-only hot spots to allow their sts to use their 1:1 devices, often causing issues because of data overages. Providing free, filtered internet to our students eases the restrictions the mobile-only device posed. #txeduchat
  • DenFishe Nov 13 @ 9:25 PM EST
#txeduchat #digitalequity4all This article by MIT says that girls are more likely to use the technology other than gaming. This will help close the gender gap. https://t.co/OgotjAIkns
  • AVCatoPrincipal Nov 13 @ 9:25 PM EST

  • NikkiMcDorman Nov 13 @ 9:26 PM EST
#txeduchat A4: technology can be used for so many things now; every student regardless of gender can find their own niche in the digital age. We do need to emphasize an equity with boys and girls as well as equity in tech access. More role models for girls!

#txeduchat #castleberryisd A9 This video demonstrates the answer to how a lack of digital equity is also a lack of access to education better than anything I can say: https://t.co/jIZaBl7QyW

A9:Connectivity is the way our Ss socially connect. It's also the way they learn about things for which they are passionate. Take that away, or limit it, & it's akin to only having an ice chest in your home instead of a fridge. There's quite a limit on what you can do. #txeduchat

A9: Digital resources allow students access to a world of information and when these digital resources are used in instruction it is in the best interest of students for All to be able to access this digital material in and out of the classroom. #txeduchat #castleberryisd

#txeduchat A9: yes, in that most of our education today seems to be online. Keep in mind that there are some skills that cannot be taught purely online. Real experience needs a place too. Kids without access may fall behind, but they aren’t out of the race.

Not give homework! Or focus on technology use in school, where it's under guidance. #TXEduChat A6

This is a classroom mngt issue like all others. Provide outlets in the classroom and enforce consequences. It’s rare I have multiple ss without their device. And most activities work on mobile but not as easy, so they bring them. #TxEduChat #CastleberryISD

A9: in this day and time a lack of digital equity could mean a lack of education for sure #txeduchat

A8: Don't know if is what's being asked but-minimize the tedious aspects of device/technology management for teachers & students. Their energy & time need to be devoted to teaching & learning not remembering multiple usernames & passwords or curating a bookmark folder. #txeduchat

YES! If a plumber doesn’t have the right tools how can he/she fix the problem? If Ss do not have the digital tools to collaborate or investigate then how can we expect them to learn? Equity is all the time not some of the time!#txeduchat

A7: providing 1:1 or as close as possible at school. For those of us who aren’t 1:1 we have access to carts with iPads or chrome books for the students to use. #castleberryisd #avcato #txeduchat

A9 This is relevant on at least two fronts. Digital access to information and instructional content is a huge component of a modern education. And the use of technology is also an important skill for students and citizens. #TxEduChat

I'm retweeting this because it is such a powerful and inspirational video. Thank you @ms_pettyjohn for sharing this last year. If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and watch! #txeduchat #castleberryisd

A8: One key item to have is to have everyone trained. Digital equity will be best used if teachers are able to teach our students on how to truly learn through different devices. #AVCato #txeduchat
