#LangChat is dedicated to the discussion of topics associated with issues and trends in world language instruction and learning. Educators, administrators, learners, and aficionados of world languages are encouraged to participate and share their experiences and input on various topics such as new ways to teach vocabulary, using music in the language classroom, and making standards-based grading valid. This chat is also unique in that it brings together language educators worldwide and from different contexts (elementary, secondary, higher education, etc.) and languages.
Love listening to @teawithbvp! Insights are powerful! Teacher-led, acquisition-centered VS. student-centered. In a language classroom, student-centered is not ideal when the goal is acquisition. #langchat#Spanish#twitterProD#IBspanish
A1 #langchat A formal assessment that tells students if they are exceeding, meeting, approaching or not meeting the standards they've been practicing meeting in class.

I am migrating to this direction. I get overwhelmed with a whole IPA to grade at one time. I feel it helps me pinpoint better on what we need to do. #langchat
Also, you can use the interpretive feedback to really clean things up before interpersonal/presentational. And MS Ss just can't handle that much assessment back-to-back-to-back in my experience. Not that I haven't tried. Ahem. #langchat
Agree! Last yr I had to try to combine some to determine what a "test" versus a "quiz" was. This yr I have categories only based on interpretive, interpersonal and presentational- so much easier for everyone! #langchat

It's THE most consistent criticism of my teaching from my Ss. Finally cutting down this year. Gradebook feels a bit naked, but now looks like everyone else's. #langchat

A1 I think the assessment represents that cumulative learning stage - after a series of formatives which lead up to that place of ok, how can you now demonstrate learning - tying it all together, hitting all of the communicative modes #langchat
It really makes me accountable and balanced in a stronger way, I think. And I had to cut out the fat that just wasn't performance-based or by mode. #langchat

My colleague @ConcettaShay & I have gone 'mode' in the gradebook - (post brewing) - you really get an honest look at how/what your are assessing when you do (or providing feedback on!) #langchat

Interesting! I have gone towards IPA-light with modifications to the reading & never all 3 parts at 1 time. We do Speaking for some units, writing for others or sometimes 2 depending on tasks. #langchat A1

A2: I've been experimenting w/Interpersonal Comm rubric this year. I enter grades & adjust as Ss improve in categories.Definitely a #DanglingCarrot#langchat
A2 #langchat I can't live without authentic texts for Interpretive mode. My favorite is videos. SOMETIMES I slow them down a TINY bit with VLC, but my Ss are getting very good at not freaking out about NSs in authentic videos.
Just dropping in to read through the chat tonight! Thank you all for all you do and for your engagement, passion and dedication to refining your craft for your š«s and for your fellow teachers! #langchat
A2: I like using @Seesaw for students to upload speaking samples. I donāt require a lot of output but use it more for Ss (and me) to see growth #langchat
I use @Flipgrid for oral proficiency formative and summative assessments. Great way for Ss to see themselves speaking and to monitor growth over time. #langchat
A2 for presentational writing, doing a series of quick writes beforehand really builds towards a more formal on-demand piece at the so-called end. #langchat
A2: @edpuzzle for listening. I call my IPAs āquestsā and all categories are out of 10. So their listening gets rounded to the closest whole number out of 10. Cuts out 25% of grading. #langchat
I would like to evolve to something like this where I can just spontaneously grade an assignment and only change for improvement like my retakes #langchathttps://t.co/xexNQK1O7V

Oh man. Iām kind of all over the place right now #confessiontime As I move more into CI I do mostly interpretive assessments. And Iāve started taking free writes. I feel that these are showing me more info, though. #langchat

A2 #langchat for Interpersonal speaking, at the university level I'm lucky to have D2L and our textbook website both that my students can record videos of their conversations and submit to me
I really like @Seesaw for speaking and some writing - easy to comment on and students can't see other's work. Mine like their videos to be private. #langchat
A2: Practice I use-Ss draw a "section" of story & turn drawings in. Next day use them for either reading or listening assessment. Ss choose pic that fits description. #langchat
A2 #langchat I love having students blog about the themes we study as a way to just get them writing and preparing for writing assessment in a fun way.
It is like EdPuzzle for reading! And for formative, kids can see others' responses after they submit, so they will request to re-answer a question to improve!! #langchat
Oh, I couldn't make the argument that this is a real-world task. However, as @lterrillindy writes in The Keys to Planning for Learning, it's about seeing what the S can do entirely independently. Very different product from a polished project with T edits, etc. #langchat
A3 #langchat I am a big fan of TALK. I almost care more about just getting my novices to have a fairly natural feeling conversation than anything else. Assigning "jewels" to each S works.
A3 #langchat I have even my novices doing "A hablar" (Let's Chat) activities all semester every couple of weeks and they self assess. I can't do face to face interpersonal more than once a semester, so this keeps them talking and using the same rubric I use.
We do it every 3 (?) weeks. Keep 'em in a folder in my room. The day after writing one, Ss exchange and count one another's # of full sentences & vocab. words. They track these #s in folder over course of year. Great data & progress. #langchat
A3 I prefer to assess students' convos "live." They know prompt in advance, but not who their partner will be--ensures negotiation of meaning. #langchat
A3 - I sometimes assess and sometimes they do. Love the 'interpersonal' fair for empowering them with std to stdt speaking https://t.co/pcvGUjxzM5#langchat
You know all those little FB videos that say everything in subtitles and just have negligible music? I put a bunch together for a reading @EDPuzzle once #langchat
In reply to

#langchat My #1 requirements is NO ENGLISH with their partner and the main point is to just get their message across however they can. Each time we increase the amount of time they talk. Seems to prepare them very well for the once a semester face to face with me.
A2: Having a system in place to make interviews flow easily. I have an "on deck" desk for whoever is up next so they can read the prompt and get prepared. #langchat
With classes of 30 I follow the same idea but they all go out and record (on phones) at once...I listen later...lowers affective filter for them they say...#langchat
A3: When I eventually teach Spanish, I think that it is important to properly prepare for the students for interpersonal assessments by having them converse with one another for practice. Then the students will feel more comfortable conversing with me. #langchat
A3: There are pros and cons to kid/kid convos and teacher/kid convos. More time consuming, but I actually enjoyed speaking to each kid individually. #langchat
A3: I start really (really) small w/these. Respond to a greeting/farewell = points. Answer my questions about likes/dislikes = points. Slooooowly building up #langchat
Oh sorry- I was talking about ActivelyLearn- it is like EdPuzzle for reading. Unfortunately, I can't share mine easily... my one problem with the program! #langchat

Sigh - Canadian privacy laws...parent permission required for anything where student data is held outside Canada- even Flipgrid now an issue! #langchat

Absolutely. I just saw about 20 pairs of Ss for oral assessment and they pretty much thought it was just like what they've been doing all semester. Some we completely nervous but so many just thought it was "old hat" #langchat
A3 #langchat I used to use Google Hangouts On Air but they kept changing the way it worked and keeping up was impossible. What's a good replacement? #langchat
A4 I like something that requires some research in the TL and includes S choice. Then, opportunity for Ss to share this new info. with classmates, Q&A on it, and ultimately DO something with it. #langchat
A4 #langchat Great question! I've only done formal writing assignments and formal video creation like PSAs because I really don't know how to handle in class presentations that include an unengaged audience that well. Excited to see what others are doing.
For recording? I cannot say. For live conversation @Goodson found me a really great web app called appear.in I find more use for asynchronous things like @Flipgrid now anyway. #langchat

@VTracy7, @HornbyUribe, @Goodson, @Flipgrid
A4: I used to have my Ss do fancy presentations and writings. Iām more in to keeping it small, informal and unannounced. But I do occasionally have Ss practice story retells. #langchat
A4 I am big on aligning the Linguafolio I-cans relevant to the level and theme, then practicing all along (in chunks), using those as basis for presentational.
Although esp with my upper levels, I wonder when you go to presentational like writing a paper in Spanish that they would have to do at a college? #langchat#cantdecide
A4: I like writing for presentational (regularly, low-stakes, and also on IPA). Research shows a strong writing-speaking relationship so I try to be intentional with a writing focus in class. #langchat
Okay I'm totally humbly novice with flipgrid but it rocks... For summative interpersonal - give ss the summ speaking task on the spot and them bam/record? #langchat
ePals! Today we wrapped up a "tenue originale" challenge where Ss are going to send the best ones to our ePals to be judged. And we're putting together a survey about spending $ ā¬ for them to complete... #langchat
I like this as a good compromise! I know that when I write in Spanish, I always use dictionaries etc but I also want a true reflection of what they can do independently #langchat
A4. For our persuasive writing unit, Ss face off in daily lip Sync Battles and vote for the best battle. They persuade the Judge that their candidate needs to move forward via a strong persuasive paragraph. We deconstruct paragraphs and winner moves on to next round. #langchat
A4- What we do for presentational writing is really a combination interpretive and presentational. Students read/listen, then write supporting an opinion. #langchat
A4: quality presentational Assessments do NOT exist in a vacuum. Ss should have specific audience in mind while crafting their message. The audience should be someone other than the teacher. Itās a great opportunity to demonstrate their ability to engage TL audience. #langchat
informal writing helps dev. fluency and comfort in writing, but formal writing process gives them time to think about necessary vocab, forms, think critically about their work and make corrections over various drafts. #langchat

I think a lot of presentations are Grecian urns. Thatās why I wonder if not appropriate for novices. A presentation to me says you have some important info to give me. Something to ponder, etc. A daily routine, for example, doesnāt fit hay bill for me. #langchat
Not chicken. They will use (and probably poorly) online resources when given the chance. You could also use computer with Respondus Lock Down Browser. #langchat
Try #twittclasse for connecting with classes in France. We collaborated with many classes in France and elsewhere in Europe via that handle. EPals and Mystery Hangouts are great! #langchat

I hear ya. We've done itineraries for visiting Quebec City, ideal homes, and mash-up outfits mixing our MS style w/ that in #authres. It's simple stuff but maybe a little bit important, too? #langchat
True but how often are you looking at an authentic resource to find answers to a question you might have? (And I use mostly modified #authres too!) #langchat
A5: So many! Authentic video/audio via Edpuzzle (subtitle yourself via YouTube first if you need to), great docs online via TL country govt websites, AATF has Pinterest board...
A5: Can't even lie, #langchat - interpretive is where I cut myself all kinds of slack. Listening or reading with multiple choice questions for quick grading. There. I said it. š
So true--I try to create an authentic context for the rdg and use the text as a springboard for the interpersonal and presentational tasks, but...#langchat
The comp guide, while definitely arduous, has provided me the most holistic insight on what my Ss understand when they engage with the texts they are reading. #langchat
I see value in some of those things. I think the thing Iām looking for is purpose. What is the purpose of the presentation. I liked how someone else was talking about the authentic audience. Me the teacher isnāt enough. If itās important then there will be an audience. #langchat
Would love to see it! I used to do a long series of questions Ć la @mmeshep, then I moved to using the IPA categories thanks to feedback from @MmeFarab. Always searching... #langchat
A5 #langchat So important to have both literal comprehension and interpretive comprehension prompts. On these assessments for novice-intermediate I allow and encourage answers in English. We practice in TL in class activities.
I've scaled back on my interpretive grading and @SraSpanglish AAPL rubric after looking over/commenting on their answers to show their current level. But I love the reading activities! #langchat
In reply to
@Marishawkins, @SraStephanie, @SraSpanglish
Right. So, they present to one another in small groups. They need to convince the group to adopt their itinerary, or choose their house to fund, or send their outfit on to final round of voting with ePals, etc. There's a reason to listen & ask Qs. #langchat
