#personalizedPD chat. A fast-paced, fun chat to discuss personalized professional development for educators. We discuss what it is, why it's better than traditional PD, how to create personalized PD opportunities, how to scale it from individuals to districts, and how to inspire it from individuals to districts to want more and more of it. Hosted each week by Jason Bretzmann @jbretzmann and Kenny Bosch @KennyBosch and moderated each week by a guest moderator. 8pm Central each Tuesday.
I'm Todd Nesloney! Author of "Stories from Webb" and co-author of #KidsDeserveIt. My 6 word memoir is: innovator, friend, reader, learner, empathetic, compassionate. #PersonalizedPD
Hey everyone! Mandy Froehlich - Director of Innovation & Tech - WI 6 word memoir is relentless, divergent-thinker, dreamer, educator, dog-lover, family-woman (see how I made 6 words more with hyphens?) #legal#workingwithinconstraints#personalizedPD
A1 - Story telling to students is one of the first and best ways to connect. We do a brief “tell me something good today” in the beginning of every class. Keep it brief though. #personalizedPD
Hi everybody. Please remember to help out tonight's moderator @TechNinjaTodd by using the standard Q1/A1 format. I'm Jason & along with @kennybosch we are your hosts each Tues at 8 for the #personalizedPD chat.
A1: I think my story comes out in every day interactions. My personal experiences have shaped who I am and what I do and through building relationships I share more of myself with others. My story continues in the students I have impacted. #PersonalizedPD
A1: I started tweeting recently - I so want to start a blog and keep up with it. Holding me back: Fear of the unknown, would anybody want to read it? What benefits could come from it? #personalizedpd
A1: At this point, I have limited myself to twitter and PD conferences, but I have aspirations to blog and podcast. As myPLN knows all too well, I move at a snail's pace. I get in my own way. #personalizedpd
A1 #personalizedPD I openly share my story. Teenagers can sense BS. If I am not true to myself, I cannot expect my students to be true when they are with me. It's not fair.
A1 My story is told on Twitter, and I blog...sometimes. I need to get better at it! With my job, I'm also telling the story of my two schools on Twitter. #PersonalizedPD
A1 I'm sharing part of my story in my upcoming book The Fire Within: Lessons from defeat that have ignited a passion for learning - coming 2018 https://t.co/pn0yLVCh2v#firewithinbook I am always connecting & sharing stories bc they're such a powerful way to learn #personalizedPD
A1: I share digitally as much as possible, but really I’m a talker. I’m great at the “pop in” that usually starts with, “check out what I learned” #personalizedPD
A1: I try not to make it MY story. It is our story @JKSMAHWAH. So many people make up our community. I love sharing OUR story via @Twitter#PersonalizedPD
I started blogging about a year ago. I found that it was just as good for me to get my words out in writing more than anything. Go for it! #PersonalizedPD
A1: I agree with many others that my daily interactions are how I share my story. Would love to write more but fear of the unknown, rejection, etc. I think holds me back #personalizedPD
I started a blog as well and it felt great. I haven’t perfected creating time to dedicate to it quite yet, but it’s all about your own reflections and learning. Whether anyone reads it or not, it feels great to put it out there! #PersonalizedPD
Yes! same here, Brett! Sometimes there's so much going on during the school day, I really worry about taking up others' time. I'm trying to listen more than speak too. #personalizedPD
Sometimes telling your/our story can feel like bragging. Ts need to feel better about being proud of the great things we do! @CoyMillerElem#mmmpdteam4#PersonalizedPD
A2 A2. I just know this one was fueled by our good buddy @jenniferlagarde ......I'm reading @DiaryOfWimpKids series with my 3rd grade son. He gets cracked up and it cracks me up! #PersonalizedPD
A2: Ugghhh, None. Need to! I think the last one I read was "No Country For Old Men" "Devil in the White City" was in the realm of historical fiction #PersonalizedPD
A2 I continually read what's popular with students. I always promote a series of unfortunate events, because if Violet, Klaus, and Sunny can persevere then i can to #PersonalizedPD
I'm not sure "Goodnight Moon" or "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" to my kids for the thousandth time counts. I could use some suggestions for some good novels for me! #personalizedpd
A2: my favorite author is Mitch Albom, his work ignites something in me that forces some deep reflection and has truly changed me to my core @MitchAlbom#PersonalizedPD
Q2 I’m currently reading “A Column of Fire” by Ken Follett. It is the third part of a trilogy that is about a British town and its cathedral. It’s really about relationships and how good ones can save your life...just like teachers. #personalizedPD
Me too, Jay! Last fiction book I read, I had to force myself to finish. Not my favorite genre. I LOVE bios, autobios, memoirs, and Burgess books! I'd love to hear others' fiction recommendations & give it another try! #personalizedPD
I revisited a few novels from my Beatnik Literature class in college. Jack Kerouac’s Big Sur makes me want to find a cabin in the woods to hide in and write a book. I don’t see my kids being cool with that though #PersonalizedPD
A2: It’s been a while but I loved the Hunger Games series. It was strangely impossible to put down. I felt so strongly about the characters. #PersonalizedPD
If you want to know how slow I am, ask @froehlichm. She was kind enough to share some great tips and be super encouraging. Here I am months later still not blogging. Mandy, I have let you down. #PersonalizedPD
A3: I really can't write with others...writing is something that I have to feel and be in the mood for...I've learned that my best pieces come when I don't force it. #personalizedPD
Every teacher has a story. What's yours? Consider sharing it for the Stories in EDU book contest & it might just get published. Let's share it with the world! https://t.co/UcV0UWUIMm#personalizedPD
A3 I write a lot but not as much as I want, book in progress, but do blog a lot and make time to write thoughts to reflect, or as Jason has seen when I was at #usmspark I talk to text :) #personalizedpd
A2: Not really challenging my thinking, but good for moving teams forward: Facilitating Teacher Teams and Authentic PLCs: The Human Side of Leading People, Protocols, and Practices #personalizedpdhttps://t.co/YRUq8VQ1GY
Q3 - I write everyday. Both to students and personally. I love to do “letter writing” to classes. One a month or sometimes more it’s about tips about life. They reflect, I reflect and we both learn. Also, blogging and book writing. #PersonalizedPD
A3: I try to write every week. Sometimes it’s short little reflections for myself and sometimes it’s longer blog posts. But I enjoy the process of getting my thoughts out of my head and being able to make sense of them. #PersonalizedPD
A3: I feel like I write often, but what I do not do is reflect. I need to reflect on my experiences, especially as I am transitioning into a new role. This could help others, as well as future me. Maybe that's a good enough reason to start that blog... #personalizedpd
A2 The last fiction book I read was After You (sequel to Me Before You). I think it reiterated to me the power of relationships and empathy, and opening yourself up to new experiences even if they're uncomfortable. #personalizedPD
A3: I will write usually on the weekend and I get all my thoughts out at one time! I like to write when I’m alone and quiet. But today I took over the school newsletter and wrote in front of a class of 3rd graders! #PersonalizedPD
A3 I try to write every day - you should see the notes page on my phone! So much unpublished work! PS - Hey all! Lindsy here - checking in late from Illinois #personalizedpd
Well, I’ve been told my emails resemble novels sometimes. I write recreationally as often as possible though; whether it’s reflections or trying to work on my novel that I began oh so many years ago #PersonalizedPD
I really want to start an email account for my kids and write to them now. Then give them the password when they turn 18. I saw this on Facebook and thought it was a cool idea. #PersonalizedPD
A3: Working on prioritizing time for blogging. Working on one post every 2 weeks. Would like to move into doing this alongside colleagues more often. #personalizedpdhttps://t.co/bIU7O690MN
A3: This is a great opportunity to write a little & share with a lot! Check out https://t.co/UcV0UXckaW & click a contest link to submit your favorite story in EDU for possible inclusion in the book. You got this!
#personalizedPD@TechNinjaTodd
A3: when I was in the classroom, if my Ss were writing, I was writing. I want to blog but struggle to take the leap and actually doing it #personalizedPD
A3 - @DrDeTuro, same - lots of writing in observations with feedback (helpful, I hope), and nonstop emails - that, unfortunately, is about it #PersonalizedPD
A3 Unfortunately, not as often as I would like. I decided to keep a planner and I have been writing notecards of gratitude to my colleagues, but writing along with my students is not a bad idea. #personalizedPD
Thanks Rachelle. We're really excited about sharing educator stories with the world. We want to give a look inside their classrooms to inspire, entertain, and learn more from each other! #personalizedPDhttps://t.co/UcV0UXckaW
I did this! It started as me wanting to get them good Google accounts before every name in the world was taken, but it morphed into my wife and me emailing the kids to reflect on big life events #PersonalizedPD
My experience has changed my view on this since moving to Brazil. I have met adults, who are voracious readers, yet seemingly unphased by the suffering around them. #personalizedpd
That’s what I want it to be, for sure. There I things I communicate better through writing sometimes that I know they may not understand yet. #PersonalizedPD
A3 - Writing is something that’s like an itch you can’t get rid off. You keep scratching it and it keeps getting worse. This is in a good way most of the time. #PersonalizedPD
A3: Not as often as I need to write. I use my paper calendar to write down ideas each weekend, type a monthly newsletter, write thank you notes, and email my students periodically.#PersonalizedPD
A3: #kidsdeserveit and #innovatorsmindset are my teacher friend recs any chance I get and for kids it’s anything in my classroom library. They will come up and ask if it’s good and I try to hook them. They hook each other with @BookSnapsREAL#personalizedPD
She's a beautiful girl! She's 11 and has been with our family for 5 years. Our daughter and her husband adopted her from Uganda. They live in TX and we're in KS, so we don't see her as often as I'd like. #personalizedPD
A4: They're not elaborate, but I share what I read on Insta and what I liked about the book...I've had several friends read a book based on rec #personalizedPD
Q4 I really like John Wooden and have read several of his books. He wrote one on leadership that I found particularly meaningful, and I often quote from it. #personalizedPD
A4: I would love to start reading circles with staff members. There would be a list of books to choose from so teachers could pick something that they were interested in and want to grow in. #PersonalizedPD
A4 I'm not explicitly sharing it, but i'm incorporating @jbormann3 's professionally driven to make PD a personal journey. I'm really into Learning First, Technology Second as well. #PersonalizedPD
A4 I have a book talk with two close friends through google docs. It’s nice because we are all in different states! Our goal is ten books in one year!! #PersonalizedPD
A4: I participated in my first book talk today. My group is actually finishing up Better Conversations. I am reading Innovator's Mindset right now, with a stack of 4 more that have been recommended... #personalizedpd
A4 I started books talks with my students this semester and it is going well! I usually post a prompt like: If you had to host a party for a character from your book, what type of party would you host? Discuss. #personalizedPD
A4: I predict that The Limitless School will be the next big buzz around my school! Just started reading and can’t wait to start a book study group! #PersonalizedPD
A3 Well, writing two books & a weekly blog. And if Tweets count as writing, I'm pretty much doing it nonstop. Weird coming from someone who never fancied themselves as a writer. #personalizedpd
Q4 - Don’t sweat the small stuff for teens. Do a chapter or two a week. Students and I take turns. Going to do a #booksnaps from @TaraMartinEDU. #PersonalizedPD
I think this is one of the reasons I was blessed with the ability to read quickly. One of my students was raving about "Salt to the Sea". Wanting to connect with her about it, I checked it out and read it in one night! #personalizedPD
A3: I love writing, but tend to only find time on the occasional weekend. During the summer, I have more time and space with my friends at the @CTWritingProj. #PersonalizedPD
A5 I have books in multiple places, so I can fit in time to read often, the gym, home, school for a few min during lunch. In my classes, we work in small groups and I work with them as they read #personalizedpd
A4 I’m currently doing a book study with Lincoln on Leadership. My liaison team is also reading The Art of Coaching Teams. Both are FANTASTIC!! #PersonalizedPD
A5 With two young kids, finding time to read for enjoyment is hard, but I find when I do read in front of them, they are more likely to pick up a book and read with me. #PersonalizedPD
A5: I find books that inspire me - makes it hard to put it down. If I’m not learning from it, if it’s not pushing my thinking, I won’t find time for it. #personalizedPD
A5 - I just have to turn off distractions. Put away the phone. Shut the laptop and carve out a couple of hours to read straight through.
I do realize it is easier for me to find time since I don't have kids at home...
#personalizedPD
A5: we should be providing independent reading time DAILY for our students. Every chance we get. Perfect time to conference with them one on one about what they’re reading #PersonalizedPD
A5: The struggle is real. I encouraged reading for my students during flex period that we had. I always felt that there was too much on my plate to take time to read then. I usually try to read one novel each summer, but I need to make it a priority year-round. #personalizedpd
Q5 - Easy to do with students if you make it part of a daily or weekly class. Personally, I read something everyday. Even if it’s a page or two. Again, don’t use it, you lose it! Doesn’t have to be serious either. #PersonalizedPD
A4: I've loved everything by @robertlfulghum especially the Kindergarten book. I find comfort in his deep looks at the seemingly simple things. Plus, I'm pretty sure I'm a mermaid. #personalizedPDhttps://t.co/SbqafIiKRg
A5: I follow @donalynbooks advice and "read on the edges"...I always have a book with me...favorite time to read is in an airplane or before bed! #personalizedPD
A5 workshop model for reading makes it EASY for Ss to get lengthy chunks of time to read. I love having an actual book to read, but I am finding a device is far easier than keeping up with real books. And audible counts as reading, right? #PersonalizedPD
A5b After the mini-lesson, the rest of the reading block is spent reading. Reading just-right books, guided reading, reading on @EpicKidsBooks ...just authentic reading. My 2nd graders were reading for up to an hour by May. #PersonalizedPD
A4: We're doing a book study on #KidsDeserveIt ..sparked lots of great talk! For Ss, just shared great one (The Red Crayon) abt not judging by what's on outside, looking at what makes us diff/special, & how we are good at diff. things that are unique. #personalizedPD
A5: Not wishing it away, but in a couple years, I can have some time back for me to read on beach trips, when kids get a little older. Books of my choice will return. #PersonalizedPD
A5 I've never read more in my life than I have in the last 6 months. Twitter has given me motivation to read all the latest books from many of you. #PersonalizedPD
A5 - every night before I fall asleep - and I agree w/ @TechNinjaTodd that we should make time every school day for DEAR, SSR, whatever you call it #personalizedPD
A4 recently I read a picture book that I have shared with kids and with adults. It's called After the Fall. Excellent example of perseverance and growth mind set. #personalizedpd
I haven’t tried the audio books yet, I think I’m going to try that out. I was worried I’d be driving and miss something important though #personalizedPD
A5: Hope everyone will consider sharing a story for the Stories in EDU book contest. https://t.co/UcV0UXckaW Can't wait to share your stories. So much awesome out that that we have to see! #personalizedPD
A6: This is perhaps my favorite part of my day. I listen far more than speak. “The greatest compliment you can give anyone is to let them know that you listened.” There’s a reason why we have two ears and one mouth. #personalizedPD
A5 I've never read more in my life than I have in the last 6 months. Twitter has given me motivation to read all the latest books from many of you. #PersonalizedPD
A5: If read every day, but it is the Bible. It is how I keep my tank fresh. If I have time for other reading, then I do that. I stick with what helps me be empathetic and think of others. #personalizedpd
A6: I have found that it is essential to take the time to listen to people. In the hallway, after school, on the phone - however. Everyone has a story to tell. #personalizedpd
A6: Being present with students and colleagues. As an IC, I'm not in classroom, so I take a cart & laptop and work from a hallway. So many great convos with Ts & Ss can happen by being present. #PersonalizedPD
A6 - listen to stories everyday from kids. When they enter, during lunch, during projects. Colleagues when time permits and it usually has to be positive. If they are complaining about another colleague or student😠 #PersonalizedPD
A6 - pt. 2 - Listening to podcasts to hear from other professionals in the business. Always sharing, always learning. #peoplehelpingpeople#personalizedpd
A6: I start all of my meetings with Ts with a prompt that gives them an opportunity to share at least a part of their story... It gives me a chance to get to know them on a whole new level. #personalizedPD
A6: I really value the stories shared on Twitter. It’s such a safe, inspiring, supportive community of educators. The connections are limitless... #PersonalizedPD
A7 My ultimate goal as a new coach is to build relationships and trust. I feel like i've come a long way since August. I am always ready to listen to my colleagues to learn from them #PersonalizedPD
A6: Teaming w/ 7th grade sci/ss for about 2 months has allowed me to hear a ton of great stories from @cmkrebs, @allenboys1214, @point8787 and others, as well as so many students.
Truly one of the most impactful experiences in my teaching career! #personalizedPD
A6 - my personal goal this year is to listen and then follow-up w/ a clarifying question, instead of just waiting for my turn to talk - simple way of letting others share bits of their story, before I butt in #personalizedPD
A6: I usually spend more time listening to my Ss' stories. I eat with them at lunch, talk to them in the halls, and chat with them before I go home. I want to hear how they view the world. Helps me not lose perspective. #personalizedpd
Q5: I almost always have a book w/me. In purse, car, etc. If I'm waiting at an appt., or have a few extra min. & enjoy reading before going to sleep. #personalizedpd
Correct. Real stories from your classroom, principal's office, or instructional coaching experience. Stories to inspire & entertain. Check out https://t.co/UcV0UXckaW#personalizedPD
A6: I like to check in with the early bird staff who get to school first thing. It’s a great chance to connect on a personal basis by sharing stories. #PersonalizedPD
I always try to ask questions or comment on something specific from their story. Acknowledging and recognizing each other’s voices is the first step in building another’s sense of belongingness (Maslow’s 3rd level). #MaslowsB4Blooms#PersonalizedPD
A7: Have a staff day at the end of the week... while I have to bounce around from room to room, I am looking forward to sitting beside Ts as they learn and continue to listen to how we can improve their PD experience #PersonalizedPD
A3. Not often enough. Mostly it is reflective, daily wins/loses about lessons in school or life. I’d like time to branch out more on personal stuff. #PersonalizedPD
A7 Smile. A smile from you might be the only smile a student gets in a day. It's easy and makes people feel good to know someone is happy to see them. #PersonalizedPD
Awesome! We just played Game of Stories Saturday at #EdcampElm & learned a lot & saw the whole game sketchnoted! Who knows what will happen! #personalizedPD
A7: Try my best to understand what my peers value. Truly listening and understanding their values and aligning them with my own can help form and strengthen relationships. #personalizedpd
A6: Even just a moment at bus duty, during small group work, at dismissal/arrival, passing in the hall, can elicit some special conversation. Even just a minute or 2 can make such a difference! #personalizedpd
I want to try just working from teachers' classrooms! I can answer emails from anywhere, and if I'm working from their room and they know I'm not there to evaluate, it gives me insight on what's really going on with them. #PersonalizedPD
A7: The past two weeks there have been many opportunities to check in with staff. Lots of open ended questions with time to listen to what is needed and to learn based on responses. #PersonalizedPDhttps://t.co/aGsP0QNzli
I used to until I got too many rascals and had to give up writing in real time with them. I still complete every task I give them, both to model and for their critique. They are always surprised that I do this, but it's my way of testing if it's worth their time. #PersonalizedPD
A5. I have books in many locations. I’ll read a few pages here and there in several different stories but try to limit it to 3 books at a time when I have a few minutes. In class they read articles and analyze the content and results. #PersonalizedPD
I’ve set up in the hallway before and it’s been great. It’s amazing the conversations you can have with Ss and Ts just as they pass through. I love the idea of going into the a classroom though #personalizedpd

A7 In between classes I usually at my desk preparing for the next class period, announcing to "sit down" before the bell rings. I think I am going to take the time to walk around, talk, maybe escort students to their seats while engage. Maybe...it's a start. #personalizedPD
Not many better ways to make someone feel valued/supported than to take an interest and listen to what’s important to them. #PersonalizedPDhttps://t.co/um57KYBKSQ
I always try to ask questions or comment on something specific from their story. Acknowledging and recognizing each other’s voices is the first step in building another’s sense of belongingness (Maslow’s 3rd level). #MaslowsB4Blooms#PersonalizedPD
Q8: I am really trying to grow my PLN right now and make as many connections as possible. I would love to find and connect with other Instructional Technology Consultants across the country (and world!) to learn from and grow with. #PersonalizedPD
A7: Good question. I enjoy talking to my colleagues. I hate saying this but I enjoy listening and talking to Ss more. Most have a positivity about them that makes adults seem so boring. #personalizedpd
Thanks everyone at #PersonalizedPD for having me tonight! I loved chatting with you all! Make sure you pick up a copy of "Stories from Webb" today!!
https://t.co/RTQ214Nd6n
A8: continue to grow my PLN. I get so many ideas from Ts and admin around the world - it’s energizing, exciting, and keeps me focused on the fact that there is always room to grow. #personalizedPD
