The #educoach hashtag is used by instructional coaches around the world. We chat each Wednesday at 8pm CST on Twitter and use the hashtag throughout the week to share resources, ask questions and collaborate with instructional coaches.
Hello from OKC. I'm an elementary instructional coach and this week's success has been watching a teacher take a few shared resources and having the confidence to use them to redesign her reading instruction. #educoach
HELLO!! I'm Kristi first year part-time instructional coach in Iowa. I also teach math to 7th and 8th graders (that's not new). My success this week is having an "I noticed..." conversation about student work with a teacher AND I let the come up with the solution. #educoach
Hi! I'm a high school literacy coach in Asheville, NC. I go to model text coding in a world history class yesterday. The students did a great job using their codes to write about the text. Teacher was sold! #educoach
Hey #educoach Pam, Instructional Coach from Charleston, SC. A success this week, helping T's set prof. goals for the year and start #STEAM units for the fall.
I’ve tried a lot of programs to help Ts teach #coding to Sts and #CSFirst is the best! No cost! You don’t have to have a background in #computerscience and Sts learn and love! #txed#educoach
“This makes computer science less intimidating and more obtainable for both our teachers and students.” — Elementary school teacher, California. No computer science experience is needed to teach Google’s CS First curriculum.
A1: Just in general - I always get a kick out of kids when they think they can't read something (like directions in particular) so you ask them to read it to you, and then you ask them to recap - and viola! They know what they've read. Kids are funny. #educoach
A1: I have been working with a math teacher on helping her students identify key features in math problems. We developed this question sequence for ID'ing and thinking about key features when reading math problems. https://t.co/SRA2KAXzfO#educoach
A1: Today grade level teams sorted kids by reading level for flex groups. A 4th grade teacher shared that one of here kids just got an award from a summer reading program and he was her only student that had not regressed in his reading over the summer. #educoach
A1: I shared the idea with a teacher to use #booksnaps inspired by @TaraMartinEDU in the classroom to spark interest in reading and the teacher is introducing it to her S's Friday. Can't wait to see it!#educoach
A2: One of the most common errors I see in struggling readers is self monitoring. They are not listening to themselves read and therefore make lots of mistakes and lack comprehension.#educoach
A2: High interest text that is written at a lower level for struggling readers. Once they are hooked, they will read more. So how to get them hooked? #educoach
A3: When it comes to monitoring, practicing the skill out loud can help. I particularly like the Say Something partner reading strategy. https://t.co/1J5AcwqJRU#educoach
I will share for sure! I think they are going to use @Seesaw to start. I'll share on Twitter too. :) #educoach We started a @Flipgrid for teachers to do the same.
A2: Mindset! They think they can't or don't want to be wrong and "fail" - which I feel like is kind of strange considering the school I'm in. The pressures to read are not tangible; kids read because they want to and love it. #educoach
A3: Small group instruction. Often our small groups look more like a reteach of the whole group lesson instead of targeted interventions. We have been working on helping teachers use diagnostic running records to be more intentional in small group instruction. #educoach
Too many other "fun" options to replace reading? Too many horrible assignments to prove a book was read? EX: I love to read but REALLY want to binge watch some Netflix when I finally have time to breathe! So, when pressed for time, why would kids choose to read? #educoach
A3: Really have to trace back to root of the struggle & sometimes step back from putting pressure on Ss. Had a boy who just couldn't find the books that interested him. Ended up taking him to T resource room & he found a love there. Ts will have to think outside the box #educoach
Where do you find the appropriate interest level at the appropriate reading level? That can be a problem for high achieving students as well. #educoach
Q4: incorporating annotation and close reading strategies. Also having different text types and text complexity within the subject. Not always reading complex text. #educoach
A4: Many teachers in my district use @SHEG_Stanford resources for history. They are really literacy rich. Great driving questions! FREE to start an account. https://t.co/BiAtYezA4d#educoach
I'm on the "if you like it, read it" train. Sometimes not worth worrying levels. Just want kids to read & will eventually find what they need instructionally. #educoach
My son had to read leveled books for homework last year. This year he does a fluency reading and then reads a book of his choice. He is loving reading again! #educoach
Q6: Actively Learn. I like how supports can be supplied by teacher, students can highlight and define words, and how students can annotate text. Assessment questions can be added, too! I've shared with 4th and 7/8 teachers and they see possibilities. #educoach
Q6: I think tools like @Flipgrid or @Screencastify can be used to record S reading. They can hear themselves.,@Seesaw could show how S annotated text. Making it engaging changes the game. #educoach
I made a game out of it since we had to do assessments every week. When they knew what they had to "beat", they would practice reading aloud and time each other. Amazing what some competition can do. :) #xplap#educoach
