#5thchat is for people interested in chatting about topics in education, especially as they relate to Grade 5. The goal is to connect people who enjoy learning & sharing, plus supporting & creating partnerships worldwide!
#5thChat Introductions... My name is Grayson McKinney, and I'm a 5th-grade teacher from Troy, Michigan. Previously, I've taught 4th and 6th grades, and this year I'm loving that sweet spot in between!

A1: I look forward to these days of in-school learning by an expert other than me... you can sense a BIG difference in the excitement & engagement from Ss when the T is not the center of attention. My favorites have been Lumberjack Day and a Native American Experience. #5thChat
Since I teach ELA I started doing Skype sessions with authors of books we read. The questions generated by my classes were really insightful and they learned a lot! #5thchat
A1 Its so important that no matter the presentation, speaker, or field trip, the experience has to be relevant to Ss The more connection Ss have to the experience the better #5thchat
Bringing in an expert creates an experience for kids, it’s someone new, something out of the ordinary which gets kids excited about the topic! #5thchat
A1a The experience can't just sound good to Ts, it has to be relevant and time worthy to the students Seen too many Ss sit in boredom at something Ts thought was a great experience #5thchat
A1 I have used virtual field trips and presentations from museums, and wildlife ranges. My class took a trip down the Mississippi River earlier this year. I couldn’t have done any of them justice. Kids were so engaged #5thchat

A1 I'm going to jump to what I want to do - I want to connect my Ss with people who are in a field that they aspire to be part of. I always have them dream about what they want to be, but I want to connect them with real people who are already being that! #5thchat
A1: We've had guest speakers including local gov't, science experts, come in and skype with our students, have had some trouble with trying to manage individual experts to talk to students in smaller groups/1-1 #5thchat
Q2: Learning from experts... Please click on the image to see the full question, and be sure to include the hashtag to be a part of the discussion! #5thChat
A1: Due to certain funding issues I have had at my previous schools field trips have never really been a possibility. However, I have always try to expose my students to speakers and using technology as a gateway to new experiences. #5thChat
A1 . . . again. We have the honor of being connected with @ClassroomChamps . We are paired with the illustrious @SophiaHerzog, our Olympic mentor, and connect with her on monthly topics like goal setting, perseverance, and community, to name a few, #5thchat
A2: @SkypeClassroom has been a game-changer! Recently, had an amazing "visit" with @yanamarull, author, & illustrator... all the way in Brazil! It helped with argument and advocacy skills, and was cool to learn about how we can support the #globalgoals...even as students #5thChat
A2: My answer for question one is perfect for question two. Technology has allowed me to bring a whole new set of experiences to my students that they never had access to previously. Technology when used correctly is a real game changer. #5thChat
A2 this is something I've been wanting to do, but never was able to put it together. We have done many #mysteryskype sessions, but never took it to the next level...#5thchat.
A2: Skyping with experts is my favorite! When learning about Michigan’s tourism industry we skyped with one of the members of the #PureMichigan campaign. We all learned so much! (Much more than the textbook could teach!) #5thchat
A2 One of my favorites, and my Ss as well, is Mystery Skype. Skype isn't the preferred tool for our system anymore, but there are so many other options! #5thchat
A2 Have not gone down this path yet, being in middle school, ELA & history get most of the speakers/skypes but looking forward to hearing some ideas #5thchat
I’ve done this before too- brought a delegation of Ss with @MrRondot to present to Ts. The teachers loved it and it was a great experience for the kids to Teach like an expert. #5thChat
A2 using @SkypeClassroom has helped connect in many different ways. @globalreadaloud had us connecting with different classes and discussing the same book. Ss love the connections they make through these activities. #5thchat
A2: virtual field trips can be amazing, used Skype in the classroom to set up, classroom to classroom I've had some good and some where other teachers weren't getting what they thought after trying and they give up-a disappointment for sure #5thchat
#Mysteryskype is a great way to get into it, and learn the technology, and also practice digital citizenship. Check out the other sessions on MIE. @MicrosoftEDU#5thChat

A3: Recently, we just opened the pandora's box that is @PlayCraftLearn. We have been using it to work on our collaboration skills to build a recreation of the Jamestown Settlement. It is incredible to watch kids create with peers, and have a lot of fun along the way. #5thChat

A3 Important to make projects/activities Phun for Ss...had to keep the "P" string going! When Ss are enjoying the task the engagement, collaboration, & learning are enhanced #5thchat
This is quite the trophy case! 🏆 but it’s all for the kids! It become their normal MO and they look at it as a possibility for all their curiosities! #5thChat
A1: I have been working to implement Genius Hour in my classroom. This has afforded the students in my class to pursue their passions. I’m still in the infancy state, but I’m excited about the prospects.#5thChat
A3 an issue I've run into over the past few years...kids don't know what they're passionate about. Looking for someone to tell them what to do. See projects as a "hoop" to jump through, to get done, despite my teaching to the contrary. #5thchat
A3 @geniushour is the best way I've found to get all 4Ps in one "activity". I've seen Ss who would never interact on the playground discover a similar passion and work together to dig deeply into it. #5thchat

A4: We love using #PBL to create meaningful learning experiences for kids. Our current project is creating a classroom podcast around the #globalgoals. You can check it out here on ⚓ https://t.co/OEnUZZbtH9#5thchat
The simplest way to get started is coming up with strong, deep, driving questions. Once students have a direction in mind, the next step is to find a manageable and impactful way to showcase their learning... by inventing, innovating, or spreading awareness. #5thChat
A4: Right now our students are learning to think like programmers in our “Developer Academy” to learn how they can impact the world through a developer mindset #5thchat

A4 Haven't gotten it going yet, but intending to create @breakoutEDU activities for our kindergarten buddies before the end of the year. We've done 2 of our own now, so we know what we need. #5thchat
A5: When it comes to giving Ss #AuthenticAudiences, Think Big, but Start Small... Classmates, Buddy classes, Other classes, Parents, The Principal,
PTO, Central office people. Consider what the purpose is in sharing, and choose an audience based on that. #5thChat

I have run into this issue too! Sometimes asking questions about what studnets really love and what they really hate can help recognize passions. Ex: if they really hate animal cruelty, they can investigate more into that topic. #5thchat
We did this last year too- such a cool experience. We tied it to a service project as well, collecting quarters to donate to https://t.co/Z406i1g0oR This year, we had 5th Ss mentor 2nd Ss to share their expertise! #5thChat
A5 Sometimes as simple as asking the class down the hall to come view what we've done! Sometimes posting work on @Schoology so others can see and comment on. #5thchat

Yes- sometimes people see 6 and feel overwhelmed at trying to “get them all in”... but once you start a meaningful project, they are all engaged at once! #5thChat

I’ve been incommunicado on Twitter, or perhaps more accurately, a passive observer. My class, #rm222 is a 5th grade #PBL classroom- I’m excited to find time to read and answer more #5thChat posts than I have lately!
A6: Step it up, and find your next #AuthenticAudience through cross-district connections, whole -school invitations to showcases, reach out to local government officials or chamber of commerce members, and call on teacher friends in other parts of the country. #5thChat
A5 We give our Native American presentations to the 3rd and 4th graders. We put our character thoughts for the day on the morning announcements for all. @Flipgrid allows us to share and have others learn from each other. #5thChat
A5: connecting with other classes via flipgrid is great. Also used Anchor to start a classroom podcast this year, we got messages from teachers around the world within days of launching. It’s been awesome #5thchat
A2: We were lucky to have Paula Tutman from Channel 4 following a journalism unit. There was something about our Ss hearing about the process from someone living the life of a journalist that raised engagement ten fold. PT even stopped the presentation to track a story! #5thChat
There’s an old-Timey lumberjack by the name of Sheepshank Sam who does an incredible day-long, immersive presentation. It’s definitely a highlight! #5thChat
A3: We build our #PBL projects together. Often I create the framework, then the students drive the content. #rm222 uses @Flipgrid@PearDeck@padlet to keep content fresh and accessible. Playful? Just giving them control of their learning is often fun for them 🙃 #5thChat

A5 This year @JoyceBronwyn got me inspired to do a living bulliten board with the Hope Campaign and we have continued it for Oct, Nov Dec,Jan. We create a question and the school community writes their responses in our bulletin board. #5thchat

A7: Side effects of treating kids like #ElementaryExperts include... - A Deep Love for Learning - High Engagement - Empowered Learners - Kids Excited to Come to School - Boosted Self-Esteem - And a renewed sense of purpose in the elementary classroom! #5thChat
A7 My goal for them is ownership of their learning process. Finding their voice and advocating for themselves, especially going into middle school next year. Be a creator, not just a consumer! #5thchat
A7: In my experience, discipline issues decrease and motivation and enthusiasm skyrocket. I learn so much more about them as people than I ever could from pencil and paper assessments. I like giving them the chance to “own” their learning. #5thchat
Our driving question is “How can we use technology to inspire, motivate and teach the world?” So we’ve talked about growth mindset, positive thinking, and New Years resolutions. Here’s a video I made explaining the process! #5thchathttps://t.co/Xjrxvjj65e
I started out thinking that the place I would do the most deep learning projects would be in science and social studies- but it has really become cross-curricular. Haven’t gone with genius hour or passion projects... YET! #5thChat
I've used peardeck before and I really do like it. Especially for math drawings and discussing student work. Ss can comment on others work. Another perk is that it is an add on for google slides. #5thchat

Creative thinking for kids is the spark. Watching them then lead the learning and sharing builds such a great culture of growth, joy, listening, critical friends feedback, quality formative assessment opportunities, and empowerment in community and service learning.
