This is my 16th year of teaching--8 years high school English, & 8 years Middle School Gifted & Talented. I live in Frisco, TX--just north of Dallas. When I'm not in the classroom I'm a full-time wife and mom to two spirited boys. #SeesawChat
This is my 21st year teaching. 19 as an elementary PE Specialist. This is my 2nd year as an instructional tech specialist and a health and PE support specialist. I live in Issaquah, WA near Seattle. #seesawchat
I use goal setting and goal reflection to encourage children to work hard and see that they will be rewarded for their hard work by knowing that they have achieved their goals. #seesawchat
A1 I use the folders feature in @Seesaw for Ss different goals. They post to the folder when completing activities involving the goal and then Ss AND Ps can go back and watch their growth on that goal #SeesawChat
A1: Just began using goal setting and reflection in my kindergarten class, it is a difficult skill for some. Writing and reading goals is our main focus for this new skill. #SeesawChat
A1. We have only been using @Seesaw since September, but we did use the goal setting activity in January. We record ourselves reading- so having students reflect on their fluency has been one of my goals. Ss arr also able to see their own growth. #SeesawChat
A2: Kids set their own personal goals for math, reading, behavior, etc. It helps them know where they are & where they are going. I love that every student can tell you what they are working on getting better at. #seesawchat
A1. Get students to make a list of goals they want to hit by the end of the term. When the term is over get them to look over what they wrote and see what improvements they've made. Compliments are also great!! #Seesaw#seesawchat
A1 we mostly have done goal setting paper/pencil with calendars & bar graphs, so I’m curious to learn from others (especially ideas for limited # of classroom devices) #SeesawChat
A1: Seesaw is great for sharing their goals and reflections that happen in class. Through photos, videos & recordings of their voice, notes & commenting. #SeesawChat
A2 At the beg. of year, we do long term goal setting, too and make videos with @DoInk about what they want to do with their lives and how they plan to get there. #seesawchat
Jill Binks in Issaquah-i teach 5th Grade and am the ed tech lead for my building. Late and only here for 10 minutes-it’s the 5th grade concert! #SeesawChat
A1. Get students to set their goals in the beginning of the term and reflect on them half way through the term is over to ensure students are on the right track - This would ensure students are motivated #seesawchat
A1: my favorite way to use Seesaw for reflection is to show improvement on math tests. Ss love to record themselves correcting a mistake-and parents love the thoughtfulness of it! #SeesawChat
A2. For myself I enjoy using to do lists, however for the students I would probably use smart because this format makes goal setting very precise and achievable. #seesawchat
A2 I have created scales of reading levels, math skill progression, etc. I use reflection pieces with each scale where students can describe what they plan to do to get there. They are print tools that I just add to Seesaw and kids can draw and record on. #seesawchat
Ss should understand that even teachers make mistakes... that’s how we grow! Making it a part of their every day learning/reflecting is teaching them a life skill! #seesawchat
A2: My school uses SMART goals alongside progressions that are set out by the school leaders. We also use the inquiry process to help shape the direction of our goals & future #SeesawChat
We just did that the other night with my son when he tried drawing a square and ended up with a rectangle. He fixed it right there in @Seesaw#SeesawChat
A2 I use lots of graphic organizers and charts/graphs for students to track goals. Sometimes when they try and make their own goal they are unrealistic. Littles can't determine achievability #seesawchat
A2: we set goals that are achievable and not based on a grade. It needs to include how to measure success as well. Example: I want to improve multiplying fractions. I will practice by solving 3 problems accurately on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. #SeesawChat
A2. Getting each child to make a target for themselves and then accompany it with an action plan in order to hit that particular goal. Can reflect each week to ensure little steps are being taken in order to hit their desired goal. #seesaw#seesawchat
Q3: “Sketch your Goals” is a ready-made activity you can use through @Seesaw What success have you had with students using this activity? (Screenshots welcome!) #SeesawChat
A2 We are just starting goal setting with my 1st graders. I think a to do list would work best for them. When I taught 2nd we would set SMART fluency goals together and plan what they needed to do in order to achieve their goal #SeesawChat
My students are LOVING commenting on each others goals lately. Super cute. Things like "I know you can do it!" So awesome to see them encourage each other. #seesawchat
My higher Rs will listen to their recording and often say that they need to practice more, or they will ask to re-record the next day. My emergent Rs are so excited when they’re feel ready to record. They start with HFW; now reading level B/C books. I love the 😀in their videos
A3: This is a pretty good example of what I have my kids do--they sketch the goals, then at the next unit review I have kids update the progress they are making OR set new goals. #SeesawChat@Seesaw
A3: This an example of a goal one of my students made using a text box instead of the "Sketch Your Goals" activity. (I always give the option for words or pictures) The kiddo also went back to update progress. #SeesawChat@Seesaw
A3: One last example of a goal, then going back and updating the goals. (I guess my middle schoolers really need more sleep!) I encouraged this kiddo to make a new goal, and to be more specific about HOW they can improve how much sleep they get. :) #SeesawChat@Seesaw
A2. My students learned to set fitness goals using the SMART goal method. It was helpful way to teach them to be specific and set goals that are attainable. Here is an example of what they used. #seesawchat
A2 I have sets of different Seesaw activities for them during a unit of study. Students set goals base on when they can achieve. It makes it more manageable. #SeesawChat
My Ss did this too! I used it with all of my Ss to improve reading fluency. They could really here what thy needed to work on when they listened back to themselves! #SeesawChat
2nd Grade example of fluency and self reflection sheet- first pic is of passage and recording 2nd pic (in the same post)is the reflection sheet by student #seesawchat

A4 if you are posting to growth to @Seesaw you could have Ps comment on the growth & differences they are seeing. If you’ve invited other staff to be CoTeachers in your class, they could also comment on the growth #SeesawChat
A4. In my classroom I will document and discuss academic growth through having the children sit short, weekly/monthly science, math and english tests and I will show them the progress they are making throughout the year.
#seesawchat
A3 We did use the sketch your goals activity. We posted them in the hall and will go back and revisit them in April to see if we reached our goal. I also plan to have them reset goals for the end of the year in ELA and Math #SeesawChat
A4 At the end of writing units we always do an authors celebration, so why not do a Growth or Goal celebration acknowledging all the hard work and successes happening!! Ps & Staff could be invited to help motivate! #SeesawChat
A4 Have not done this but I love the idea. Thinking of having kids go back & look at posts from earlier in year to compare how their reading, writing, thinking, etc. has changed & do a new post using @piccollage to compare/tell about how they have grown. #seesawchat
Monthly fluency goals recorded and shared with parents- sharing the growth and struggles creates great conversations with parents on areas of concern #seesawchat
A4 if you are posting to growth to @Seesaw you could have Ps comment on the growth & differences they are seeing. If you’ve invited other staff to be CoTeachers in your class, they could also comment on the growth #SeesawChat
A4 The reflection part makes me think of when people post memories of Facebook & create a new post. Could Ss “repost” an activity to add additional reflection? Or just comment on an older post? #SeesawChat
A4. @Seesaw has been an amazing way to show growth. I used to use charts and pull work samples to show Ss their growth. But with @Seesaw they can see and hear it. It is so much more concrete for them. Ps can also see the progress and celebrate it in real-time.🎉#SeesawChat
A4. possibly making each child a portfolio. Writing in something interesting they've learnt throughout the day. Get them to be creative. They can also set goals and once reached, can reflect. Parents and teachers can comment on this too supporting achievements #Seesawchat
A5 Reflection allows them to see what they are doing well and what they need to work on- Usually they are harder on themselves than I would be #seesawchat
A5. Students are aware of progression/development. A reflection of where children are going and what they've learnt and what they would like to achieve. #seesawchat
Exactly! That's where I got the idea. I always had kids do a unit reflection, but it was more of a "liked and didn't like" review. This is geared towards the kids and their learning/goals. It's awesome. #SeesawChat
A5. Reflection is crucial to learning because it allows the students to see that hard work really does pay off and that they can achieve whatever they put effort into and practice doing. A very important life lesson to learn before the workload of high school. #seesawchat
We make a big deal about it, make invitations, send to parents, staff, & other ppl that influenced our writing. Possibly have snacks or food to correlate with unit, we have even dressed up for the occasion! #seesawchat
A5 Reflection is the vehicle that drives change. What worked? What do I need to work harder at? What did I ROCK? It builds confidence and/or drives future effort. #seesawchat
A5. Reflecting is a really important skill to have. We need this all through life. Allows us to go back on certain things and think about what we've done and what went well/ what could've gone better. #SeesawChat
A5: I think it's important that children see any growth they've made and give it due credit! Just because they aren't "there" YET, doesn't mean they haven't moved! They need to learn to see that and value it. #seesawchat
Yes!! They could then add to @Seesaw to describe the differences b/w the 2 and notice their growth! I think Ss would love it!!! And they would feel proud seeing their progress! #seesawchat
In reply to
@khurlbertne, @mrserinjewell, @PicCollage, @Seesaw
And if they don't achieve something, they have the chance to reflect on what went wrong. Was the goal too big? Was it not realistic? How can they modify it to fix it for next time? #SeesawChat
A5. Reflecting allows us to see our progress, this is especially important for kids. Being able to see improvement is a real confidence booster and encouraging #SeesawChat
A5 Reflection is the vehicle that drives change. What worked? What do I need to work harder at? What did I ROCK? It builds confidence and/or drives future effort. #seesawchat
A5: Students love reflecting on their goals and showing it on Seesaw! Here is 1 of my 5 year olds, using Seesaw to record his end of goal reflection #SeesawChat
A6: I love that my students have taken ownership of things they WANT to post. Often a student will ask if they can post something they are proud of (a podium spot on @Kahoot, a writing piece, a math problem they solved). #seesawchat
I did it with my Kindergarteners! Yes please!! The more the merrier!! Kids need to know they have more than just their teacher supporting them in their educational journey! #seesawchat
A4. Have you all heard of plickers? Well how about mini plickers with magnets on the back? Students can use these for self reflection when working on new skill aquisition. I used it in PE but can be used in any content area. #seesawchat
A5 Using something like this on a regular basis provides students the ability to be comfortable and honest when reflecting. Make it easy to use #seesawchat
A6 Yes and yes. I used to do all the Seesaw approvals and now I do them with the classes help. We celebrate understanding and address misconceptions on the spot as well as discuss what we missed. #seesawchat
A6: We have super writers of the day and they get to share their writing on seesaw with their families! They also get to wear a special super writer cape :) #seesawchat
A5: I love the conversation that the celebrations can start. Or the failures. One of my kiddos and I got in a great chat about our nightly walks because of one of his goal-setting activities with @Seesaw#seesawchat
A5: I think it's important that children see any growth they've made and give it due credit! Just because they aren't "there" YET, doesn't mean they haven't moved! They need to learn to see that and value it. #seesawchat
A6: we share all, success & failures. The Ss choose best writing to add @ end of each unit and then we have a variety of items we share each week, sometimes they are recorded without me. When I review, I post to journal, perfect or not. Ps see growth and needs #SeesawChat
RT @khurlbertne: A2 At the beg. of year, we do long term goal setting, too and make videos with @DoInkTweets about what they want to do with their lives and how they plan to get there. #seesawchat#doink
A6 My AP commented the other day on how I really KNOW where my kids are at and what they need to work on and I completely owe that ability to my use of Seesaw. #studentvoice#seesawchat
A6 I think you absolutely can discuss opportunities that weren’t as successful as planned. Ss need to know it’s ok to make mistakes- try, try again! They could even go back & edit precious work to show new growth #SeesawChat
A7: I have my own Seesaw Teaching Journal that I use to document my own goals, PD and resources. In NZ, we have to provide evidence of meeting the teaching standards & I love how easy Seesaw is for doing that #seesawchat
It's so true! It gives me a window into my kids I wouldn't see without it. I remember having my high schoolers do journals I graded and it took HOURS and HOURS and was a chore. This is fun, quick, and makes such a solid connection with my kids and parents. #SeesawChat
A7 I am going to go quiet on this one because I am spring break is overdue tired and need to work more on this one in my personal and professional life. I just want to get better and be the best teacher I can be for my kids. #seesawchat
A6 I love projecting items from our journal (with the Ss permission first). We have been working on giving feedback so this was a great way to model effective feedback. #SeesawChat
That’s a really great idea!!! I never thought of that!! I’ve been added to other @Seesaw classes for PD but creating a teacher one for myself is a great way to keep track and reflect personally! #seesawchat
A7: I think I could really grow from this, too. I have made some personal goals of losing weight, and acheived them with @DietBet because it forces you to make goals and hit them (or lose $$!) #SeesawChat
A7: I have my own Seesaw Teaching Journal that I use to document my own goals, PD and resources. In NZ, we have to provide evidence of meeting the teaching standards & I love how easy Seesaw is for doing that #seesawchat
A7: I made a goal to "go global" and get more connected. I have friends/PLN all over the world and it's making me a better teacher.
And...here I am! I even became a Seesaw Ambassador. :-) #seesawchat
A7 Be open to student and parent feedback all year long- what you think is working may not work from some. I ❤️ sending google form links in my newsletter on @Seesaw to ask for feedback. Reflection makes me a better educator #seesawchat
A7: Using 'One Word' as a form of goal-setting for myself (and with students in the past) has been really motivational: https://t.co/J2coUzqLy7#seesawchat
A7. I try set goals for assingments, when I need to have certain parts completed by. Organisation is sometimes an issue. Reflecting usually leads to me needing to stop procrastinating. #seesawchat
We’re so glad you could join us for #seesawchat, and special thanks to @mrserinjewell for hosting! Be sure to follow others in the chat to grow your PLN!
A7: I'm going to be a @GoogleForEdu certified teacher by the end of the month. That's my next major professional goal. In the classroom, I'm working on doing more #Challenged Based Learning #SeesawChat
A7 I am in a brand new grade level this year(20 yrs in ed) So it feels as if everything has been one long reflection. Constantly tweaking and letting my Ss know that I reflect and change my teaching. We are always learning #SeesawChat
Thank you so much for sharing your ideas and time with us at #Seesawchat tonight! Be sure to follow & connect with other educators in tonight’s chat & follow @Seesaw for more ideas!
A7 Try inviting teachers, parents and administrators in your room. Check out #Observeme I ❤️what I learn about my teaching through others eyes #seesawchat
Thanks for a great #seesawchat and special thanks to @mrserinjewell for moderating! See you in two weeks, or use the hashtag anytime to share the awesome things your students are doing!
You are so brave. I never mind having someone visit my classroom, but it's always informal. I need to try it more directly, but it's so hard to open the invitation. #SeesawChat
