#WeirdEd If you don’t know what we’re talking about, here’s the post https://t.co/AwDallTjwJ
(new people- many chats don't write a blog to go along with it, but I do because I need to figure out what I think before I can write questions about it)
Hi #WeirdEd I am here because my sleep is all messes up because of the flu 😷 (It's a doozy. Get your shot.)
Rebecca, literacy instigatrix, Dominican Republic, which is a good place to have the flu bc they sell 73 flavors of soda crackers
#WeirdEd For the new people- I'm Doug, 5th grade, bombastic rock star front man of a never-ending education funk machine. Also the creator and mod of WeirdEd, but not the engine. That's all you.
I'm Caitlin from Ohio, I teach technology for gr 1-3 (and tech coach for teachers), actually have no weird colorations. I don't even have my ears pierced. #weirded
#WeirdEd And I'm very colorful, what with the blue hair and painted nails and tattoos. I could have put this in the first tweet, but that would mean I know how my own chat works.
Emily from NJ abt to fall asleep but sticking around while I can. Well I having a fishing tackle box full of eyes shadows that I use. I never tried to catch fish with them #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd Thomas Mision 4th grade Student Teacher, recently found out my uni denied financial aid appeal. I have naturally occurring white spot of hair, as seen in my profile pic. Nothing unnatural involved
I have been experimenting with contouring because it kinda looked fun.
I have learned that without mascara or lipstick, no one will actually any other products you put on your face. #weirded
#WeirdEd
Brett, teacher/artist in Gresham/Portland, OR. I don’t (purposefully) have any unnatural colorations unless I’ve been painting. I am fairly pale also...
Hey #weirded! It's been ages. Jana, from Oakland, 6th grade. No colorations except a few bike accident scars. (PS others please feel free to mute for the next hour)
#WeirdEd I got my ear pierced with my dad, whos idea it was not long after my parents divorced. I'm sure it had NOTHING to do with how he figured my mom would react to it.
Bridgette, ED, no extra color, what you see is what you get, no tattoos, hair color, makeup, or nail polish.
I guess I'm trying to blend in with the beige walls
All my grey hairs are named after students #WeirdEd
Shawn from the 603! Frosted my tips (when I had them frosh yr in college). Wore make-up when lip synched Culture Clubs Do You Really Want to Hurt Me. Do these count? #WeirdEd
Ian - educating in BCs snowy Shuswap - love encouraging new teachers to understand that the job....well....it’s not necessarily what you think it is. “Teaching” #WeirdEd
Edwin. 1st year educator in my home district of Philly. It’s been a bit. I feel sad that haven’t been able to participate in the chats as often. 1st year is kicking my butt. I don’t have any unnatural colorations that I’ve added to my body, yet? 🤔 #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd I would say though, no one had any idea how my hair mutated like that. It occurred at the age of...11? I guess that's the unnatural part. No delving in the Dark Side though...far as you, I mean, I know
I have been experimenting with contouring because it kinda looked fun.
I have learned that without mascara or lipstick, no one will actually notice any other products you put on your face. #WeirdEd

A1: This is an interesting quote because it’s what we and our students always initially do with a book. Look at the cover and then maybe the back before deciding to read it.
I'm Cari and I was a blonde as a child and I can't let it go, so I pay 💰 to make it stay that way, & that's normal, but if I paid to have my old childhood freckles tattooed on, that would be weird ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
#WeirdEd
A1- because why do book companies spend much $$$ designing and marketing the cover ? Should we judge? No. but are we also told that first impressions are crucial ? Yes. #WeirdEd
"You never get a second chance to make a first impression."
Unless the book gets a second printing with a new cover and everyone forgets the first #WeirdEd
I’m pale, so contouring makes me look like I’m in denial about my paleness. I actually got upset at a makeup artist for a wedding about it- it was awful. #weirded
A1 Perhaps this is an appropriate time to discuss the difference between "assess" and "evaluate" (which is virtually impossible to translate to Spanish, it turns out, because they're the same word, so PD is hard.) #WeirdEd
A1 part of how we judge a book is indeed by it’s cover. That doesn’t mean the rest isn’t important. The cover is just the first step in getting to know the whole experience #WeirdEd
A1. Re: actual books, I'm always annoyed when the cover really doesn't match the book. I always want to tell kids to push past the covers of older books like "My Side of the Mountain." BUT I also hate modernized classic book covers. #picky#WeirdEd
A1: “Judging” or rather looking, is how we make observations. We can gain some general knowledge and start building our schema. Just have to be careful to avoid prejudice. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd It drives me NUTS when a cover shows one thing and it's completely wrong. Like it has nothing to do with anything, or the character is blatantly wrong. Ugh
A1 agreed. We eat with our eyes. There was a study that when fed in the dark most people preferred the taste of rare (or medium rare) steak. However, most don’t order the way they’d prefer bc of the look. #WeirdEd
A1: I'll go ahead and be that guy and say that we should judge - it's a survival method, really. BUT the trouble is when we form an opinion and never reevaluate it with new information. #WeirdEd
I remember reading something somewhere about teaching kids about "tricky people" instead of something like "stranger danger." Bc being strange/unknown =/= dangerous, and sometimes the ppl u know will be the danger to a kid #WeirdEd
Hey. Jodie popping into #weirded to let you know that I have lots of tattoos--but not enough tattoos just yet--and I've been dying my hair black lately ...
A1: I never say that quote bc when I walk into a bookstore, all I look for is an interesting book cover. That and how does that work with graphic novels? #WeirdEd
A1 cont. I'm not as flippant as that sounds. Visual presentation is increasingly important and I WANT kids to have an appreciation for the first impression, as well as for the power of a visual hook for a project. #WeirdEd#designthinking
#WeirdEd Coming in mid-year, as I've done a few times, you can't easily peg/categorize anyone b/c their too busy sizing me up -- and wondering if I'm staying
So, once you've developed rapport/relationship, you start having opportunities to help kids judge people NOT based on looks/what they say, make judgments of people based on how they treat others/how they make you feel #weirded
But I know when I'm the one making a 1st impression, I have to make the best of that opportunity. Why else choose one's outfit so carefully for the first day of school? #weirded (and what does that model for kids?)
Not judging a book by its cover is a way to incorporate a lesson about not judging people by what is on the outside. The cover of a book and appearance of a person are both surface level judgements that can be dug deeper if we give them a chance and teach our students to #weirded
A1: It’s funny because I tell my students before we dive into a book “based on the cover, what can you predict about what the story is about?” It is impossible no matter how much good intentions one (me included) try not to do that with people or anything. #weirded
A1 ) I've found as I have become the older, portly gentleman at school, those young whipper snappers see me as the bad old conservative guy when I'm probably a lot more radical than them #weirded
A1 (again) book cover judgement for me happens when it’s depicts something from the movie version of the book on the cover. Unless the movie is an unabridged dramatic performance…it doesn’t belong on the book. #WeirdEd
A1: That question has layers... do we mean looking beyond people’s veneers? Do we pay more attention to the covers vs. contents? Should we take care of book covers and our ours as well? #WeirdEd
Or when the title is spot on but you don't get it right away so I'm all like "whaaaa" and then I'm like "Gah!" Cause I was too young to watch The Crying Game #WeirdEd
People stereotype and react based on knowledge based off of previous situations. with self control and maturity and experience, one may carefully react and not to the stereotype, but the mind may hop to conclusions...
Humans judge other humans by any information we receive about them, so sometimes what we first see IS the information. Hard to overlook that ... but we have to stick with a person and gather more information, so we have a more well-rounded knowledge of that person. #weirded
A1: Judging is wrong in general. If the 'cover' is physical appearance (which most of society would consider) it's definitely wrong. Even judging someone's ch. 1, 2, or 10 is wrong. #WeirdEd
Serious A1, judging by appearances can be a survival mechanism as much as anything. And most people with any means use their appearance to give clues to their personality #WeirdEd
A1- they aren't book covers, but this question has me reflecting on how much I miss record/CD art since digital music became a thing. We all judged that ! #randomThought#WeirdEd
A1: Not judging someone based on their looks is virtually impossible... I think it is part of our natural instincts to judge others (safety reasons, maybe?). I do wish it was something that I would do less often.... #WeirdEd#cep416
Forgot the #
#weirded
A1: “The cover” is often purposefully expressive of self and not all judgement is negative. Don’t be married to your first impression thought and challenge yourself on negative assumptions. Your first though is socialization, your 2nd thought is who you are.
#WeirdEd Indeed. It's also possible to have 2, first impressions too. Like, say, a hopeful, young student teacher helping set up b4 1st day, optimistic convos w/mentor, then come 1st day, it all goes....different in practice. Sometimes things can be that dramatic... LOL
a 1.2 Ive always been conscious of how i present myself too. not until after i've established my professional self have i let my personal self thru. weird, yes but #weirded
That's a good point, if I made better judgements instead of being overly tolerant I probably would have avoided some messy and dangerous situations in my past #weirdEd

#WeirdEd Jumping off that, then we teach the idea of self-reflection,using new info to see how our perception went wrong. "How did our prediction, possibly based on prior experience, contradict the actual content?" How did our biases get in the way of seeing them?
Not the public ed system, the eikaiwa system. Privately operated English schools for hobbyists, business travelers, or cramming for actual school #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd A2 Started an experiment last year. I have a shoebox filled with ties, some 20+ years old (heavy on the +)
I wore a collared shirt w a tie every day, and the kids didn't know what to make of me when I walked in
A2 Yes, I've had to. Had to get ppl to take me seriously so toned down my style? I guess. I'm too lazy for tats/color but I don't wear my leather to work. barely starting to wear my fav tshirts #WeirdEd
A1 We have evolved abilities to judge based on first impressions, notice more, and question our assumptions. Why not develop all of those capacities, and learn when to use which? #weirded
A2: This is a sideways answer to you Q, but even though I'm aware of enclothed cognition, I try to look my best when I feel closer to my worst. Because the first impression I give is to myself, in the mirror, and when I look ready I FEEL more ready. #weirded
A2: The first thing that comes to mind (and this is kinda rude) is that I NEVER drop what I'm doing when another adult comes into the room. My kids come first, always, and someone popping in is totally WELCOME, but they're not gonna get my time til my kids don't need it. #WeirdEd
It's imperfect because some of us are slaves to fashion (bell sleeves, seriously?! I want to use my hands safely thanks) and some of us don't have the means to change our appearance. But useful nonetheless #WeirdEd
Q2 yes. There are entire degrees for advertising this kind of stuff. From the color to the font they’re using. It’s no different than a movie poster or prologue music to a movie to set the tone or expectation. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd Do you dress/present in a way that you know will influence what people think on purpose? ie- I kinda like that some ppl will see long blue hair and quietly doubt capabilities. Happened with a parent this year.
A2) When I was angry with my school I decided to interpret the tie rule as wearing a bow tie but then everyone said they liked it so it didn't work #weirded
A2) when I know I’m going to be making a first impression I think I go over the top to be “ON”... it usually works but I’m exhausted at the end of it #weirded
#WeirdEd A2 I guess, yes? In a way? Whenever I meet new kids, esp. boys, I purposefully showcase my love of many things, but especially GASP! "Girl songs" in Disney. It's not against who I am, but more showing them something else from male-dominated patriarchal America....
I had the Minister of Education walk into my room once and I told him to just wait while I helped this kid with his maths question. he looked shocked #weirded

I totally agree. I'm a big fan of 'dress for success'/'look good feel good' so on days I know I need the confidence boost I tend to dress up a bit more #weirded
A2: This is a sideways answer to you Q, but even though I'm aware of enclothed cognition, I try to look my best when I feel closer to my worst. Because the first impression I give is to myself, in the mirror, and when I look ready I FEEL more ready. #weirded
I met my best friend when she was wearing a pair of light blue pants with red lobsters embroidered on them. It was not a preppy era for fashion nor was the rest of her outfit preppy, so it read as adorkable. I had to talk to her. #WeirdEd
A2: I wanted to make sure that if there was anyone at my school who may have thought I was unprofessional that I try to change that bu dressing more professionally #WeirdEd
When I taught at an all girls' high school there, there was a debate as to whether the swim team should have to dye their hair black bc their hair would turn ... less black from chlorine exposure. They asked me what American schools would do. Never asked me again... #weirded
A2: I think it depends on the situation I am presenting myself in. Usually if it is a casual setting I just go with what I feel most comfortable in. If I am meeting someone professionally - I am a bit more conscious of how I present myself. #WeirdEd#CEP416
We have pretty strict and conservative dress code for staff. Generally easy for men but I think the women are much more restricted unless they want to go for the suit look. #weirded
A2: When I initially started getting tattoos, it was a way for me to separate myself from the general population. Now ... I just think of myself as an art project ... It's not so much a separation technique anymore. I still like to have some edge to me though ... #weirded
#WeirdEd what.
Reminds me of this hilarious argument I had w/several 4-6th grade girls at my summer job where they said my hair wasn't black bc it wasn't...black enough? Pointed to another girl who had that really shiny jet black sheen as an example of black hair LOL
Right. But for me "dress for success" is a moving target. Some days it means comfort, others it means professionalism, and sometimes it means vanilla frosting in my hair, or Pokemon leggings. #weirded
#WeirdEd True story- I taught in Hawaii for a while and randomly met a student and parent on the beach the weekend before school started wearing only a racing speedo (was for an open water race). FIRST IMPRESSIONS!
A2: I dress up for work because it makes ME feel more engaged. Also, everything must have pockets. And I need to be able to stand on a desk or get down on the floor, so there's that. #WeirdEd
Someone on the street or Lyft driver, who I won't see again? I have some things/issues to resolve if I come to a conclusion of them based on 1 interaction? #WeirdEd
A1) back when I first started teaching I was so careful to try to look professional all the time. I hid so much of who I was with those damn heels. It just wasn’t natural. Kids could tell #weirded
A2: Every now and then I have to consider how I should dress so as to not scare people... This has remained a healthy choice for most black people... #WeirdEd
I definitely think about how I present myself because I would never want my appearance to represent me in a negative light. I want how I appear to match who I am #weirded
A2: Heck no! I dress the way I want o be dressed. Many ppl I know tell me I dress like an old man or old fashioned. I don’t see it, but to each’s own, I guess. PS: I think I have great style WHEN I put effort 😂 #weirded
I feel the need to add that those of us who don't get presumed competent based on stuff we can't control (gender, race, age...) often feel more pressure about the things we can control #WeirdEd
Hadn't noticed? It was several weekly chats before I saw a pic of Doug other than his profile pic -- I didn't know he had facial hair!
He laughed heartily
#WeirdEd
Good for you. I try hard to wait for a teacher to pause. Don't interrupt instruction. I also ask to speak with a student before approaching S. #weirded
A3) I just laugh it off. I think my students know pretty quickly that I don't care about the superficial so there is nowhere for them to with it #weirded
I feel the need to add that those of us who don't get presumed competent based on stuff we can't control (gender, race, age...) often feel more pressure about the things we can control #WeirdEd
One lesson I taught (to adults) was about job interview language & customs. As an icebreaker, I asked how you prepare for an interview in Japan. The two students, both women, immediately both said "dye my hair black". It... it already was #WeirdEd
I think it is important to teach our students to not be so focused on physical appearances and to learn to see and appreciate what is underneath... but also to make light of those situations not take them to heart #weirded
A3. LOL They ask if I'm pregnant (nope, just got fatter, guys) , if I'm wearing makeup (yeah, sometimes), if that's a mustache (sure is, I'm Sicilian, deal with it). I tell them the truth, laugh it off, and tell them not to ask others that. Gotta learn sometime. #WeirdEd
We have a policy that if a teacher walks in then the class must stand up and say good morning/afternoon. Students do it automatically and very distracting #weirded
#WeirdEd There's a line, for sure. When to make light and when to point out social conventions or things students say that are rude or worse but they don't mean as such.
A2: My school dress is comfy and laid back. I was grateful to go back to teaching. Dressing up and suits were not comfortable and fun during edtech coordinator days. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd A3 Also, one semester when I was a dean, 2 kids were running down the stairs, middle of a period, and burst onto the 2nd floor in front me. One looked at me and said, "Damn! Mr. Burke lost weight"
I let them off with a warning.
The students are usually right. "You look tired." Well I am. "You look fat." Well I'm pregnant. "You look sick." I have a fever. "Those pants are weird." I know. "Your shirt is ugly." Thank you. (P.S. I am NOT pregnant, but that scenario is based on a true story. Ha!) #weirded
Pictures of me with students or friends over there have made me permanently aware of my rosy complexion. I have never since bought or worn blush. (Not that I ever wear much makeup, but...) #WeirdEd#WeirdTangent#RedAF
A3: If it’s about me, I’ll joke with them. If it’s about students, depending on the situation, I do have a conversation especially when it’s haircuts. Many of my kids can be downright rude/ mean in regards to noticing physical changes. #weirded
I don't have tats or painted nails or anything, but I definitely dress in a way I feel expresses myself. I wore a school uniform for most of my years as a student and I could never go back to it. My family members wonder how I would dress if I had any other job #weirded
#WeirdEd I do the same thing when I get a haircut, I always deny it, just because their confusion is funny. "You got a hair cut!"
"Huh? What? No, I didn't. Anyway, how was your weekend?"
A3: Mine isn't a physical change, but a physical characteristic. I am just a little over five feet tall, so I am constantly worrying about how my students will act around me... Especially when some of them might be taller than me. #WeirdEd#cep416
I thank them for concern . Before Thanksgiving dog scratched me rather well and I have huge scar. Student keeps putting hand sanitizer in it so it'll get better A3 #WeirdEd
Ugh, yes. Us, too. I have gotten away with not enforcing that one (and I also have a reputation for telling interruptors to come back in 5/15/30 minutes when they they will be less disruptive) #WeirdEd
A2: Will never forget the English teacher who wore a pair of sweatpants with "Juicy" on the rear. I pointed out how she was wearing sweatpants with "Juicy" on her butt around bunch of teenage boys. "It's Juicy Couture" she said like it mattered #WeirdEd
I can’t go the entire year.....but I like wearing ties most days and my ocd kids wait for me to repeat....they wait a loooong time (esp as I’m adding #bowtietuesday to the mix) #weirded
#WeirdEd A3: They mention things here and there (compliments, they’re a kind bunch) but are mainly preoccupied with their own appearance and that of their peers.
A3: Mine isn't a physical change, but a physical characteristic. I am just a little over five feet tall, so I am constantly worrying about how my students will act around me... Especially when some of them might be taller than me. #WeirdEd#cep416
A3) my students typically don’t notice/mention appearance changes... I guess maybe HS students are less prone to blurting out their noticings? #weirded
A3 I am NOT a makeup person, so if I show up with some on then they are certain I have a hot date. I once had a student who offered to fix me up with someone "coz you look quite nice today Miss". #weirded
A2: I do know it stinks that even though I get to wear shorts and tennis shoes, many don't respect, understand, and appreciate the pedagogy, differentiation, and diverse things we do in a gym. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd When I see all the elementary teachers all dressed casually and here I am, wearing button ups and khakis, because as student teacher I have to dress my best to present every day, I grumble.... LOL.
Hello! Sorry Im late. Im Amanda from CA and I teach third grade. Currently have two tattoos and ten piercings. Looking forward to my first #WeirdEd chat
Hello! Sorry Im late. Im Amanda from CA and I teach third grade. Currently have two tattoos and ten piercings. Looking forward to my first #WeirdEd chat
A3 With my high school ones, especially the boys, I inform them firmly and politely that my body is not an open topic for discussion. My girls need that sentence modeled. #WeirdEd
A3 Students do point out the smallest change in my appearance, like if I don’t put on my bracelets or wear two different socks. I wish they’d read books and poems that closely.
#weirded
Serious A2 I try to plan my outfit the night before because I'm not a morning person, but I'm never trying for a certain image other than "put together" #WeirdEd
I have had to use this line with students on MANY occasions ... "Just because you have a thought up here" (point to head) "doesn't mean it needs to come out here" (point to mouth). #weirded
a3 nah, it's coworkers who notice every little thing. trimmed bangs. new dress/shirt/clothing. i'm like yeah yeah gotta go #weirded#weirdo#dontlikeattention
#WeirdEd It's always interesting to hear these stories, bc as a young, nerdy anime loving teen, I idolized Japanese culture. Then I dug in a little too deep, opened my eyes wider, see all those issues present in every culture....
I should've thought of that back in my cubicle days. I bought some cheaper ties when I discovered what it costs to dry clean one that had an encounter with lo mein! #WeirdEd
I became good at braids and other updo-type hairstyles because my long hair gets in the way when I lean over to help students. (Could just do short hair, but then I'd have to get it cut more often. Eh.) #weirded

OMG I HATE pajama day. I hate Spirit Week entirely. I'm such a grump. But the categories are always so uncomfortable and I feel like a fool in a bathrobe. #WeirdEd
I also get this from kindergarteners
Them: "How did you get so big?"
Me: "I'm assuming you mean TALL?"
Them: perplexed (unaware of my fat joke allusion)
Me: (6 ft. With heels) "I eat my vegetables."
#WeirdEd
A2: The first thing that comes to mind (and this is kinda rude) is that I NEVER drop what I'm doing when another adult comes into the room. My kids come first, always, and someone popping in is totally WELCOME, but they're not gonna get my time til my kids don't need it. #WeirdEd
I had a student who was the inverse - idolized American culture. She decorated her classroom with pictures of NASCAR drivers and her friends called her Mack (short for McDonald's) #weirded
Do y'all notice that they have NO IDEA how old anyone is? The same kid will ask if I'm 50 and then ask if I'm 20 as if you would ever guess those two ages for the same person. #WeirdEd
@TheWeirdTeacher#WeirdEd
This isn’t an answer to any specific question, but I just want it on record that I’m a better teacher on a jeans day and I wish I got to make that choice every day.
Or if I wear shorts and have a whistle. Imagine Black, female, PE......😳
I had someone tell me how shocked they were with my quality instruction and instructional strategies 😩 #WeirdEd
Hoodies are at least in the top three of most useful pieces of clothing someone could own... Certainly... I mean pockets, warmth, AND protection fro the rain... #WeirdEd
A1: As a teacher I feel somewhat judged by my "cover." I often wear my hair down so most piercings & tattoo are covered. Im am judged by my age. When it comes to ss, I get to know them, and don't judge by their cover. Treat others how you want to be treated. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd Oh boy, I kinda hope the student has the same revelations I did. Idolizing can be blinding. The experience taught me to look deep beyond the cover.... Ah HA! Seque back into Q1!
I have had to use this line with students on MANY occasions ... "Just because you have a thought up here" (point to head) "doesn't mean it needs to come out here" (point to mouth). #weirded
I have my ties to start baseball season @mariners and for May the Fourth(be with you) and as librarian I would connect the tie to the letter of the week. Every. Letter. #weirded
#WeirdEd Q4 Do you have a story about a time when something you did without thinking about the educational implications had strong educational implications?
(ie- painting my nails led to good conversations)
While I try to “encourage” every Friday to be a “jersey day” and I like shirt and tie - nobody is told what to wear (and jeans are more common than what my outfit is in our public schools!) #weirded

A4: I wish I had a story, but I do notice that at my new school (rural, let's say...Libertarian) the parents really want to engage with me more than they did at my previous school (suburban, conservative) #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd Q4 Do you have a story about a time when something you did without thinking about the educational implications had strong educational implications?

I've taught in PA, NC, and VA, and Friday jeans is totally a thing. In PA we could wear jeans once a month. In NC we could wear them only if we donated to a principal's-choice charity #WeirdEd

I mean, if you're on the floor w/ kids, jeans and comfortable clothes make sense. You can still look nice. I wear jeans often, but I also choose to wear a shirt and tie every day. #WeirdEd

A4: Well, the phone thing is actually a good example. I ripped it out of the wall while it was ringing for the 8th time that dayand they were shocked by the outburst. I had two great convos: why they're worth more than the phone, but also why I shouldn't lose my temper. #WeirdEd
A4: I don’t know about my Ss, but my coworkers were a little more inspired to make bolder fashion choices after my two week lipstick challenge. The kids just thought it was fun. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd A4 Yes, I was more prone to being all screamy, yelly early on, but I began to see the obvious detriment it has on both student and myself, esp when I come home exhausted and sad bc of yelly, screamy.
I actually kind of hate jeans. I wear a lot of skirts and dresses because I like to get points for looking nice while actually wearing basically a long t-shirt. But on jeans day? I WILL WEAR THE JEANS BECAUSE I CAN WEAR THE JEANS #weirdEd
A4) back when I had my first miscarriage, I told my students (juniors) afterwards bc I thought it was important to be honest and quash their rumors that I had cancer. Turns out it was a great opportunity for a conversation about tough topics and stigma #WeirdEd
I pretty much where black pants every day (I have six pairs .... just in case my students are reading 🙃 ). BUT less choice makes it easier and then I only have to choose my shirt/top. #weirded

When our temps get into the 90s I find myself revolving into shorts and gold shirts. And sandals (with heels for safety! And crocs to annoy my colleagues - but not socks and sandals. I’m saving that for my kids graduation event!) #weirded

A4 I was teaching overseas on a military base, and my husband was deployed…one afternoon I let my teacher face drop & my human face show to first graders most with a parent deployed…we dropped the lesson and shared our fears and comforted each other. #WeirdEd it was cathartic
A4: Early in one yr had soph who I could tell was having a bad day. Wrote her a note letting her know she was awesome. Gave it to her, told her she could open it whenever, she opened it and ended up carrying that note in her phone case until she graduated #WeirdEd
A4 After 18 years of teaching, I have to wear compression socks and arch supports. One day when I was teaching shoeless, a student asked about them and we had a great conversation about the ways we care for our bodies. Their empathy was very moving.
#weirded
A4: I got a class pet. For the computer lab. Because a friend needed to rehome his lizard. It's turned out to be really interesting, leads to good convos about how some people/animals demonstrate love/respect differently. (lizard likes to see you, does NOT want touched) #weirded
I always do too. I might call them the wrong name twice before coming up with the right one but I always notice haircuts. It's weird the different ways we're all wired. #WeirdEd
A3: Im still trying 2 figure this one out. It always happens the 1st time I wear a dress. My ss see a hand size skin graft on my knee and then I hear lots of, "whoa, what happened?" I just say I had surgery, instead of explaining having stage IV metastatic melanoma :) #WeirdEd
I personally don't care what anyone wears as long as it is appropriate for the job. That covers a wide swath in my view. Wear what you damn well want, you're an adult! #WeirdEd

A4: interrupted a former principal in my class when she interrupted me during a visit. I cut her back off & told her in a stern/respectful way that she wasn’t to interrupt me or anyone in my class when talking. Had good student talks about when to challenge authority.
A5 Eyelids, nails, hair, contacts (but I am thinking creepy Halloween contacts here!)
Immediately off on tangent of least to most odd piercings and/or tattoos. #weirded
A5: 1)hair-if the prez can do it, anyone can. 2) eyelids- I can't be the only person in the world who never knows that anyone is wearing eye makeup 3)nails- chips off, but it can cover the dirt under them, so... and 4)contacts- hell no uncanny valley. #weirded
New haircuts are easy to identify. The kid with the hoodie pulled way over the head (love hats and hoodies as easy ways to identify kids in crisis) #weirded
God, the kids always notice if I wear the same thing twice in a week. I'm like, "I seriously could not name ONE thing any of you have worn this ENTIRE year." I just have no eye or memory for clothes. I'm crap at "catching" dress code violators #dresscodesaresexist#WeirdEd
A4 yesterday someone asked why the government shut down & I explained DACA. We had a really good talk about how we define belonging to place/people. Totally didn't have time for the Proclamation of 1763 but now it will be relevant #borders#orders#weirdEd
A5 I am moderately faceblind so I vote hair because it's probably better than plastic surgery if you want to avoid detection by me. The other stuff I will not notice. #WeirdEd
A5: Actually, the order you wrote them in is how I would rank them if you mean ppl adding fake eye lids on top of their real ones. Not sure, but I find that puzzling. #weirded
Whoa.... i could have used that fortitude lst wk. Instead i looked back @ class/sighed/said now!!? & huffed a little as i stepped in2 hall. Prinpal wanted 2 ss 2 apologize 2 me. (Nothing I'd initiated) #WeirdEd

A5: This one is very hard!
So, I choose to not rate them! Express yourself in whatever way you please. Our differences is what makes the human race so awesome! #WeirdEd@CEP416

I'm like the Seinfeld episode with the revolving wardrobe. I pretty much have like ten shirts and five pairs of pants. They just go round and round. Makes like so easy. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd A5, I don't know. I guess out of anything, I just find colored contact lenses odd? I'd just say, 'ey, those are way too piercing into my soul, save it for Anime Detour or the next Anime convention,"
A5 I support anything temporary. Permanent.....better be darn sure....I can get used to most things.....but again....permanent things tell stories.... #WeirdEd
A5. for myself all of em. i got no time or desire in the morning or in life to maintain any of that. cool for others but i am super lazy low maintenance. #weirded
a6: Put stuff at THEIR fingertips. Give them the classroom. Make it so they can grab supplies when they need them, a pillow to work on the floor. #WeirdEd
I had colored contacts for 4 years- everyone thought my eyes were blue green until I decided to get rid of them. The enhancers are fine, but some are ridiculous. #weirded
My youngest cousin (gr5 now) once wore the same shirt to school 2 days in a row, and her bro said, "You can't do that! They'll put you on a list!" My uncle asked me (niece-teacher) what he might have meant by this. #weirded

#WeirdEd Q4 Do you have a story about a time when something you did without thinking about the educational implications had strong educational implications?
(ie- painting my nails led to good conversations)
a6: In middle school, I surround myself with decorations and inspiring quotes for ME, not for them. It's less pander-y, lets them get to know who I am, and I think they're pretty solid for everyone. But you'll never catch me with a "teacher" poster. #weirded#theselfishteacher
A6) BOOKS!!! ARTICLES!!! ESSAYS!!! SPEECHES! Read all the things! And use the power of social media and/or LMS systems to share them and talk about them with our Stusents #weirded
A5: Colored hair, nails, eye lids, contacts. I tried violet contacts senior year of hs. Epic fail. I’ll stick with my baby blues. For some reason coloring other parts of your body seems somewhat “normal” but the eyes are a different story. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd True, sometimes though, I get so used to a person's face it gets jarring, but I usually work w/elementary where they don't have those bizarre lenses. Still, as a geek, I'd probably geek out over 'em. LOL.
A6 Any time our students ask us if they “have to” do something is an opportunity for a conversation about their values and choices. Why would they want to?
#WeirdEd
#WeirdEd A6 I'd say "my Sonic Screwdriver" but it doesn't work like it does on TV
I do think I got a student to write more when she found out I wrote some flash fiction
About 10 years ago someone put a Justin Bieber poster in my room. It's stayed there ever since (though I have moved it to a less conspicuous location. Inspires many conversations. #WeirdEd
A6 my desk is in the corner; "my" corner is decorated with sparkly contact paper and tons of pics of my dog, me doing outdoorsy stuff, etc, & Christmas lights. A) they can see I'm human b) If they want to make a connection, they have a lot of conversation starters #WeirdEd
I’d add that I’ve found (bought) many great picture books, in my eyes, that lead to discussion. Some I’m a little hesitate to read out loud to my kids because, I hate to admit, that I’m afraid of the backlash; From parents and admin and possibly even colleagues. #weirded
#WeirdEd + (she'd been quietly following my twitterfeed, and saw that I won an @eSpecBooks monthly contest -- ooooh, that was the wrong entry for her to see. Conversation ensued.

Two things-
First, I've got four books, three about teaching, one about student teaching *cough collegestudents cough*
https://t.co/c75j72eUdW
A6 We can also have them read the physical spaces at school – notice how different spaces communicate definitions of “success” and then choose what THEY want success to mean, according to their own values.
#WeirdEd
A6 I have buckets of maker stuff for Valentine’s Day makerspace to tease the kids. Ole LEGO sets. Old laptops that kinda work (and ones that don’t in a take apart station) #WeirdEd
Never stop reading out loud. Never. Read out loud to high schoolers, to college students, to anyone. It's such a treat. Never be afraid of the backlash- there's hella research to back you up if you need that kind of thing (you don't). #WeirdEd

A6 the library. My fav English teacher in HS gave us time in class every month to go and pick out a new book so no one could use the excuse that they 'didn't have time to go'. What you choose to read is an expression of who you are and how you think. #weirded
My German teacher sat on his desk and used his overhead cart as a combo footstool and desk. The overhead stayed on the back counter under about 97 laminated posters. Technology grant money hart at work ☑ #WeirdEd
