The new #CurriculumforWales is very interesting and worth a look. Good dialogue with #teachers, particularly in the writing of the subject #specifications. Providing meaningful CPD & promoting teacher #autonomy will be key. #edchatie @EducateTogether

Not late at all - it's a slow start to #edchatie tonight with the discussion topic of "Technology-based learning - working with the pros and cons.”
    In reply to @languagesdude
  • CuffeL Nov 12 @ 3:55 PM EST
#edchatie Where are we thinking about the technology? Between the teacher and the student, the student and the content or the teacher and the content?
  • conpower Nov 12 @ 3:55 PM EST
#edchatie Conor, secondary, Limerick. Strange question - is it a general look at the pros and cons o tech in ed. It is a tool to support learning. You don't base learning on technology unless it gives a benefit or fulfils a purpose.
  • conpower Nov 12 @ 3:56 PM EST
#edchatie Yeah was wondering if my tweekdeck was on the blink. Its a bit of a broad one this week, hard to know where to start.
    In reply to @fboss, @languagesdude
  • languagesdude Nov 12 @ 3:57 PM EST
I suppose with tech it opens up so much possibilities for learning... using eportfolios has allowed me to do so much ... con is when students try to use it on the phones at home , it’s difficult because they aren’t used to it and can’t use phones in school #edchatie

Technology used correctly greatly enhances teaching and learning #edchatie
  • CuffeL Nov 12 @ 3:59 PM EST
I'm going to jump in with Con's Technology can be an additional barrier for students of slender means or low levels of computer/internet skills it can be intimidating, even at college level. #edchatie
  • carchermarino Nov 12 @ 3:59 PM EST
#edchatie lots of potential for #TEL to create and inclusive, accessible and engaging classroom- BUT pedagogy comes first. Learning enhanced by tech- appropriate tech is just another instructional tool to be employed
  • CiarraiKM Nov 12 @ 3:59 PM EST
I’ve made a very small beginning with eportfolios this year as I’m using Class Dojo which has this facility. It gives pupils ownership of their work #edchatie

I think gov policy focuses too much on tech infrastructure and not enough on pedagogy, whst do u think? #edchatie
  • fboss Nov 12 @ 4:00 PM EST
Very good point here about not basing learning on tech unless it benefits that use #edchatie
    • conpower Nov 12 @ 3:55 PM EST

  • carchermarino Nov 12 @ 4:01 PM EST
#edchatie focus must always be on the “why”- “why” have you chosen that tool for that topic/ task? What is it going to bring to the learning experience for the students?
  • conpower Nov 12 @ 4:01 PM EST
So true, in every year group I have come across a handful of students who have little to know concept of how to use computers. So easy to assume 'everyone' knows the basics. I'm not just talking about mobile first kids. #edchatie.
    In reply to @CuffeL
  • CuffeL Nov 12 @ 4:01 PM EST
We often see it as just between us and the student in the classroom but looking more broadly, we see much more of it. for instance I use a MAC to store research paper pdf's, I have instant keyword search available for all my references...#edchatie

#edchatie Have just started using an online reading program called Reading Eggs, as part of a research project . It adjusts to the student’s level and can be accessed at home or school .
  • fboss Nov 12 @ 4:04 PM EST
Agree that the "WHY" is so important in deciding about using tech in learning #edchatie

Let the teaching drive the Teck requirements. "We have a load of new Ipads... can you recommend Apps?" may indicate that the Ipads are just fancy jewellery used to make the learning look better.. #edchatie

#edchatie 100% Or a small number of schools / school leaders who start looking at what tech to buy without really considering what they want to use it for in their own school context.
    In reply to @CuffeL
  • CuffeL Nov 12 @ 4:09 PM EST
And what are you reading with it? Are we talking form or content... If the content is strong enough sentence length or vocab is not an issue! #edchatie

Just past the halfway point in tonight's #edchatie discussion topic "Technology-based learning - working with the pros and cons.” To sum up so far - context around its use seems to be important
  • conpower Nov 12 @ 4:10 PM EST
#edchatie And a real barrier for some students and staff. I feel @PDST_TechinEd and @Dept_CCAE broadband for schools was a truly revolutionary move and has had huge impact.

  • MsACMoore Nov 12 @ 4:10 PM EST
Agree. Technology should enhance learning and skills, otherwise it becomes a case of putting the cart before the horse. #edchatie

#edchatie I’ve been part of a #TEL mentoring initiative where we mentor other teachers in the use of #TEL. It allows the teacher to be fully supported in trying and testing #TEL in their own classrooms Check out our website @TELMSeu

STEAM teaching completely revolutionised Teaching and Learning in my school #edchatie
  • CuffeL Nov 12 @ 4:13 PM EST
And good infrastructure like serious enterprise level WiFi and some one paid to fix stuff fast is probably the most effective but least visible investment in technology you can make! #edchatie

#edchatie Ond of our biggest issues in primary is still the lack of high speed broadband - nothing worse that having a great lesson ready - and the tech. crashing !
  • fboss Nov 12 @ 4:13 PM EST
@orna_farrell Can you explain "Enhanced is a problematic term it assumes a self evident good" in a bit more detail? - it's a really interesting point #edchatie

Kate Urell Dublin #edchatie technology can encourage student participation but it is not a cure-all
  • conpower Nov 12 @ 4:15 PM EST
#edchatie A lot of the old technical cons have been eroded over the last number of years. Devices like #chromebooks and tables have helped in this regard with all day battery Life, next to zero deployment and maintenance, near instant on times
  • CuffeL Nov 12 @ 4:15 PM EST
I think an additional factor must have been enthusiasm, The energy and commitment of the teacher to getting fun out of the technology can make all the difference! #edchatie

#edchatie this week I delivered a #FET class using #TEL and 2 of the students said they didn’t enjoy it because they were sick of using their phones and wanted a break from them...
  • conpower Nov 12 @ 4:16 PM EST
#edchatie I'll echo what many others have said tonight, its just a matter of getting the how/what/where/when/why of using technology to support our learning
  • fboss Nov 12 @ 4:16 PM EST
    Checking it out now! #edchatie

  • The_Urell Nov 12 @ 4:17 PM EST
#edchatie while many students are good on social media they often need guidance with word processing
  • carchermarino Nov 12 @ 4:17 PM EST

#edchatie One huge pro is for the self motivated student they have the sum total of knowledge of humankind at their fingertips with a connected device and the knowledge to use it properly!
  • fboss Nov 12 @ 4:19 PM EST
Thanks for that and you make as very good point too. #edchatie

#edchatie Another issue that arises is their lack of interrogation of sources. There is that period at the start of first year where some students presenting a topic will just copy and paste the first page of Google Search and consider it 'done'
    In reply to @The_Urell
  • fboss Nov 12 @ 4:20 PM EST
I think the last part of that sentence is very important. #edchatie

Could we consider Enhanced as referring to an increase in the rate at which the transformation implied by the term learning takes place? #edchatie
