Welcome everyone to #FormativeChat. @OrganicLeaderVB and I are your Co-Hosts this evening along with the great people @goformative. I'm honored and excited to be talking about how the different forms of feedback empower FAs!
A1: FA is used to scaffold Ss learning so that they see where theyāve been and where they are going and become part of their growth and mindset for improvement. #formativechat
Yes, they understand that nothing is final until they feel mastery is achieved and they are ready for you to see what they can accomplish. #formativechat
A1 Starting 2nd unit tomorrow Using FAs to have Ss see their growth as a beanstalk The more FAs we use w/intent the more Ss will see growth & push farther upward #formativechat
A1 FA provides the backbone for differentiated instruction. Ss are being met in their proximal zone there for learning is purposeful, genuine, and timely #formativechat
A1 Using that information as a way to fail forward. What does it look like now what is it supposed to look like. How do we bridge that gap. #formativechat

@mizpalumbo#formativechat is the right place to be on Monday Nites if you want to some good ideas for assessing for learning. You're in the right place
A1. Have Ss keep specific FAs in a data binder in chronologic order - have them do periodic reflections in which they identify development/progress and set goals/plans for future #formativechat

A1 I like using @plickers so that both the students as I can quickly identify areas of mastery and things we still need to work on. Plus itās super fun to see the data in real time! #formativechat

A1: Ss need to be organized to see their growth from one experience to the next? Where do they see growth and learning? What worked for them? What didn't? What did teacher do to support the growth? #formativechat

A1: When used correctly, formative assessments can make students active participants in their education. They chart areas of strength and weakness, and form a plan for improvement. #formativechat
A2: Many of my FA questions are short answer and asking for the explanation and the why. This gives them ways to show how they can think outside the box in their own unique way. #formativechat
A2 FAs are a springboard to discussion & feedback The more FA data Ts & Ss collect the more Ss can share their views on their needs & wants in the CR #formativechat
A2: If you build into the assessment not only Ss initial answers, but opportunities to work in groups or review & build upon the work of others, you will have a wealth of information to help guide the rest of the unit. #formativechat
A2 #formativechat you empower students by est. a classroom where Ts and Ss learn together and realize that getting things wrong is a process for growth not a definition of one's worth.
A2 So, now that you have seen the results, what questions do YOU have? Help them learn how to evaluate by not giving them answedr but rather coaching them to a place of using their own thought processes. #formativechat
A2. Consider making that FA not a 1 and done, but rather an opportunity to have a growing dialogue. Provide feedback, ask Ss to respond and/or demonstrate growth via an additional opportunity #formativechat
A2 making Ss part of the process gives them a voice in the process and moves assessment as something done to them to something for them. Ss need to set goals and track their process based on feeback and input. FA becomes a tool to empower learners #formativechat

Yes! A colleague of mine talked about the power of a blank sheet of paper! Rather than force Ss to align their thinking with the Ts prescription, Ss get to show what they know with little to no boundaries. #formativechat

A2: Elicit feedback w/ daily learning reflections and encourage them to share Q's they have or are curious about. Use it to drive direction of instruction & personalize learning ! #formativechat

So true, talking through them, and also good for other Ss that had the same misunderstanding and hesitated to respond or thought they were the only 1 that didnt get it #formativechat
A3 FAs give Ss path like a GPS They know where they want to go they need guidance on how to get there FAs give them a road they see & commit to #formativechat
A3: Again, I would have to say scaffold the questions. Have them start off with confidence, but then stretch their thinking and have them go beyond to see connections beyond what they know. #formativechat
Hey Dean! Yes! Encouraging risk-taking is such a big part of fostering self-regulated learning. The learning cycle itself demands learning risks!
#formativechat
Currently using #hyperdocs in my classes, and also with some FA asking Ss to give me fdbk on their work and also on the learning experience, #formativechat
A3 #formativechat Next step is to invoke a clear method for retakes and redos so that students have a second chance to showcase what they have worked on and improved...
A3: Ss have to be shown a repertoire of strategies that are personalized to their strengths and needs. They need to be shown; they don't magically know. #formativechat

A2: FAs are great for building positive learning communities where Ss engage meaningfully in the co-construction of knowledge, push their learning, and reflect on themselves as learners and knowledge creators #formativechat
A3: Through formative assessments, revision and pre/post assessment you can create a roadmap of mastery. Students can see where they began, where they struggled and where they excelled. #formativechat
A3 Best and hardest question. Evaluate daily. FA each day and begin class the following day with targeted direct instruction focused upon prior class data. Easiest form - exit ticket. #formativechat
Here's a quick FA I made for my Ss -- Cheers and Challenges -- Review your work and feedback -- Identify what to celebrate and what struggles need future attention. #formativechat
So important to make explicit the strategies that we want Ss to use! Too often I see Ts who make too many assumptions about the toolbox their Ss come to class with. #formativechat
A3: Ask students in groups to identify āa question worth askingā based on prior study, that they would like to explore for the next class #formativechat
A3 FAs give Ss path like a GPS They know where they want to go they need guidance on how to get there FAs give them a road they see & commit to #formativechat
A3 I like to do open-ended FAs on Canvas and allow multiple attempts. That way can give feedback and Ss can resubmit after some reflection. #formativechat
A3 Give them the big picture. It should never be a secret where we are going. Those that get it will implement at an acelerated rate and those who need the extra time can have it as well. Bite sized peieces only help keep the class together. Know your Ss. #formativechat
Yes, and make that evaluation different looking each day so that students donāt even know FA is happening when it is! It takes that fear of assessment away. One day @goformative, one day @commonlit, next @Kahoot, then @flipgrid. #formativechat#myweek

It does take a lot of time, but the rewards are endless and each time you use them, you will improve them for your learners at that moment. #formativechat
A3 Can use in data in whole class, grouping, and individual instruction. Use a variety of formative questions to meet more learning styles and get clearer picture. Allows students to see and understand strengths and weaknesses #formativechat
Great question @D4Griffin3. Model the desired outcome or expect Ss to guess what we want as Ts? Hmmm. Which leads to optimal learning and which to maximum frustration? #formativechat
A3 focused and targeted learning objects allow Ts to become well versed at using FA to drive instruction. Knowing where we need Ss to be and where they are helps Ts provide targeted instruction. When done correctly itās almost seamless: instruct, assess, adjust #formativechat
A3: Ss should be supported in identifying their strengths & areas of promise: they should also be supported with locating their success in the broad, overarching learning goals & identifying next steps for their learning #formativechat
A3. Have Ss complete reflection forms that incorporate their next steps. Area(s) I'm showing success/ growth in- Area(s) that need more attention - I plan to grow in this area by... #formativechat
This is especially important for Ss with disabilities. Iāve had Ts come back and say how impressed they were with the S response when given choice. #FormativeChat
Thank you everyone for participating in tonight's #Formativechat Thank you @OrganicLeaderVB for Co-Hosting, and thank you from @goformative for giving us the opportunity. Such good insight shared tonight! Hope to see everyone at the next chat!!!!
Thank you #formativechat and @GThomasCoker ! Good thoughts here. We must give room to learn in what we teach and observe that learning in a way that promotes growth. A 1 score from a single test/assignment with no reflection or follow up is NOT that! Education is not a gotcha
A3: maybe itās too mathematical of me, but I liked having āif-thenā actions for Ss to choose/follow based on their level of learning. #FormativeChat
Thanks!! I also use it as a self-reflection tool. Far too often I found myself skipping the celebration and only focusing on the 'needing improvements' piece. It's helped with my own #growthmindset#formativechat
