Welcome to #Moedchat - I’m Josh Howard, tech coach from Fulton, MO and I’ll be your moderator this evening. Let’s start by sharing who you are, where you’re from, and one exciting thing that’s happened to you this school year.
Have a couple minutes to give our #DigCit student blogs feedback on the results of us Googling ourselves? Thank you! Please RT. https://t.co/KrEbQ144Kj#MOedchat
Tonight we’re gonna #teachlikeTupac - All Q’s will be inspired by quotes and lyrics of Tupac Shakur. It’s okay if you’re not a huge fan -- his words will still empower you. #moedchat
Tonight we’re gonna #teachlikeTupac - All Q’s will be inspired by quotes and lyrics of Tupac Shakur. It’s okay if you’re not a huge fan -- his words will still empower you. #moedchat
Tupac once said “I’m not saying I’m gonna change the world, but I guarantee that I will spark the brain that will change the world.” Tonight we’ll talk about creating that spark. #moedchat
Helllo #moedchat, I’m RYAN from Wentzville. I am an Elementary Principal and I am excited about the amazing collaborations the staff at Peine Ridge are@having about Ss and Learning!
It’s all about having high expectations and holding students accountable. The way I do this is by having students work real world problems and develop real world solutions. It creates a tremendous buy in. #moedchat
A1 I like to give students plenty of opportunity for reflection and goal setting. I am a big advocate for student portfolios and student choice in learning goals. #moedchat
A1: The best way to help others grow is to model it. Talk about what you are learning, your struggles, how you are working to improve. Relationships and reflections!! #MOEdChat
A1 we talk about our passions and build relationships with Ss so they are comfortable sharing their passions with us. We use this info to spark curiosity. We model risk taking and make it a part of our culture #moedchat
A1 we have done a lot of work around Jo Boaler's research to build an understanding that all students can learn math to the highest levels when effective teaching practices are combined with a growth mindset #moedchat
I am the Gam for PBJHS Eng 8, Poplar Bluff, MO. I got to Go To ISTE in CHICAGO. That was great! School year???? Well, I'm waiting on my moment. #MOedchat
This is great advice. Not only does it make the learning real, but it also allows you to build relationships at the same time, which is key to any classroom. #moedchat
Having students take ownership of their learning by setting goals and of course holding them accountable is a big piece to creating a classroom that is learner centric and learning forward always. #MOedchat
A1: I want to give S’s as many opportunities to learn and grow as possible. I try to model a growth mindset and am not afraid to look silly during my day. Whatever I can do to make a memorable moment! I don’t want them to feel like “it’s me against the world”~ Tupac #MOedchat
A1 Model the continuous desire to learn and the importance of a growth mindset. Make sure to build confidence by showing students they have the ability to see growth and learn daily even with failed attempts. #moedchat
A1 Agree! Giving Ss TIME to reflect solidifies their learning. Choice allows Ss to take ownership. Two huge ingredients that allow Ss to 'grow.' #moedchat
A1 I like to give students plenty of opportunity for reflection and goal setting. I am a big advocate for student portfolios and student choice in learning goals. #moedchat
A2 Ask about what you don’t know, there’s nothing “dumb” about asking questions, if no one can answer your question, then find a way to find out #moedchat
A1: Model a #GrowthMindset - Set high expectations for Ss and then help them reach them! Mod l for Ss that it is ok to fail, as long as you learn from it! #MOedchat
A1: Choose. Today, I gave 2nd Ss a post-it each. They had to write what they WANTED to research. They were a bit inspired by my 8th hour, who choose to research cannabis because of a novel we had read in class. 8th hr's infographics are 100! #moedchat
A2 This already came up, but I try to find problems that are real and relevant to what students care about. What problems affect our community? How can we solve them? #moedchat
I’m going to take a step back first year… First you need to develop lessons that can cultivate critical thinking. Once that happens I challenge my students to think outside of the box by putting them in scenarios that are difficult but based in a real-world situation. #MOedchat
A2 my favorite questions to ask in the math classroom are What do you notice? What do you wonder? Provides great insight into what Ss are thinking and where to take them next. #noticewonder#moedchat
A2: I'm developing a project based learning unit studying learning styles and motivation. Students have to write their own essential questions. #moedchat
A2-Letting ss know that there is no wrong/dumb question. I loved when I went to a mentor training and learned inner and outer circle questioning. #Moedchat
A1 - Don’t accept poor quality work. Don’t accept “I can’t”. Push Ss to be better and allow them to freedom to be creative in finishing things their way. Learn from mistakes and prototype until success. #MOEdChat
Oh boy, so glad this movie can be relevant to education in 2018. But this is so true. How often do we keep asking students to go further when they think they are done? #moedchat
A1 we have done a lot of work around Jo Boaler's research to build an understanding that all students can learn math to the highest levels when effective teaching practices are combined with a growth mindset #moedchat
A2 As the T you have to make sure to create a classroom community that welcomes an environment where Ss are allowed to question. Then teach into accountable talk, soft skills, and collaboration that challenges one another. #moedchat
A2: Best questions I ask are in my head while presenting Ss with phenomena that gets them fired up and wondering. Curiosity is the key to cognition! #MOEdChat
A2: Questioning comes from feeling comfortable in your environment. Building good rapport is first. Key up the topic and leave it open...allow for free question period where you are allowing them to throw down as many questions as they can. #MOEdChat
Q1: We need to model resilience for our students. We need to show them how to overcome failure, mistakes, and disappointment. We need to show them that we can turn difficulty into lessons learned, and lessons learned make us wiser. #moedchat
Q3: Tupac often collaborated with his community to accomplish things. How do you emphasize collaboration among your students and school community? #moedchat
Q2 Some of my favorite moments are when I don't know an answer and I get to say, "I don't know, let's find out!" I love sharing my love of learning & watching Ss faces as I share my excitement at learning something new WITH them. #moedchat
A2 I think it’s important to get students to ask the next question. There is always another question that can be explored about a topic one question should lead to another #moedchat
A2 - I rarely tell them how to do anything. We make mistakes and try to fix. I am there to answer qs but often reply...what would you do! Projects are real, meaningful, & challenging. It’s rough at first but months in Ss have great perspective & understanding. #MOEdChat
A3 work together, if I’ve already said it, Mr. Wall won’t say it again (he’s probably said it multiple times now), ask around, you’re all in this together, you can solve it together! #moedchat
Yes! Just model those questions that don't have a yes or know. When model how you'd answer it. Students don't see this enough from their teachers. #moedchat
Q3 Modeling is key- show its importance. True collaboration challenges us, pushes us out of our norm, helps us see our own faults, and makes us better. #moedchat
A2 my favorite questions to ask in the math classroom are What do you notice? What do you wonder? Provides great insight into what Ss are thinking and where to take them next. #noticewonder#moedchat
A3 Having a math partner to bounce ideas off of is part of our classroom culture. Math is no longer a subject of worksheets done in isolation. Ss are encouraged to collaborate with others on rich tasks. #moedchat
A3: Ask: What do you think? What are you passionate about? How can we being the best out in each other? Speak truth, but refrain from bashing. #MOedchat
Q3: I like to show student exemplars on my Smartboard as students work. They will get up and ask each other how to do things. I also ask, "Who found out something cool?" #moedchat
A3 - give them opportunities to work with each other. And not just friends. Picking random groups. They often complain at first but the work is generally 10x better than if they were working with friends. #moedchat
A3 collaboration starts with trust people must feel valued & important, true partnership must be established & collaboration has to be a regular part of the learning process We have to teach solid listening skills & how to respond to being critiqued or questioned. #moedchat
A3: Collaboration is a life long skill. We try to model it among teachers and give the students the opportunity to do the same in the classroom. #moedchat
Q3: Tupac often collaborated with his community to accomplish things. How do you emphasize collaboration among your students and school community? #moedchat
I was just working with some students today on developing portfolios -- this is the kind of world we should be teaching students to live in. Creating, sharing, and reflecting on their work with eachother. A natural part of the process. #moedchat
Starting technology portfolios this morning in @CwebbMrs class. Day one and we've already published our animated GIF projects. #fmsteach#fpslearn#fultonproud
Building relationships and teaching students how to interact with each other is key. The classroom should be a family -- talk freely and be respectful. Be critical, fair, and honest. That builds trust. #moedchat
A3 - I encourage Ts to bring real problems that need solved and we solve them. Currently working w SPED dept to create VR experiences for Ss. That’s my favorite problem that we are collaborating on with school community at the moment. #moedchat
Q4: Tupac lived through some dark moments, but overcame those to reach amazing heights. When things get hard, what are some ways you can encourage students to stick with it and overcome adversity? #moedchat
Q3: There is no school without the community & There is no community without the school. Schools need to find ways support and uplift the community. The community needs to continually show support to its schools. It's a co-dependent relationship #moedchat
Q3: Tupac often collaborated with his community to accomplish things. How do you emphasize collaboration among your students and school community? #moedchat
A4 - I use examples of how I have failed and what I did to overcome that. Also look for celebrity examples - eg Michael Jordon, Bill Gates etc. #MOedchat
A4: This is when, as their teacher, I have to help them see the bigger picture. The larger goals they have for themselves. That I see their potential. #moedchat
A4 - I’m very real w Ss. Life is not all sunshine and rainbows. It’s going to knock you down and you have to get back up. Over and over again! #moedchat
A4 we celebrate mistakes whenever possible. Mistakes are proof that you are learning and growing. Creating this culture in our classrooms is imperative to teach Ss to persevere when things get tough. #moedchat
A4 coaches wrestling for 20 years & wrestled all my life adversity is a wrestlers best friend. My philosophy has been that the gift of adversity was the opportunity for growth I talk to Ss all the time about this. It’s also important to share our struggles with Ss. #moedchat
A4: Each student just like each of us may require different things. Get to know your kids and discover what helps them. Be honest; they can see a fake a mile away. #MOEdChat
It starts with instilling in your students to have a growth mindset. Helping students understand that problems in life are constant (and will only get more difficult) but it is how you think about them and approach them which will make the difference long-term. #MOedchat
A4b students need to hear our stories of perseverance and stories about risk takers who overcome odds. All great things were achieved through failure at some point. Ss must know it’s ok to fail that builds your resume #moedchat
A4 - I also model failure. Spell words wrong, use wrong facts, throw in punctuation errors at times. Students love finding my mistakes - shows them no one is perfect. #moedchat
A4: Help then get back in touch with their strengths https://t.co/m1mZnYWrqE look over and see which ones can be used to make the challenge easier. #MOEdChat
Failure is important! It’s important to show our students as well that we have failed and will continue to fail but it is what we do after the failure which is what really counts. #MOedchat
I love when teachers use things like that as a growth moment. We all spell things wrong! Use that as a modeling opportunity when students point it out! "Oh thanks! Help me fix that!" #MOedchat
Q5: Tupac’s confidence allowed him to take creative risks. What are your tried and true methods for building confidence and self esteem in your students? #moedchat
A4: Show students the @TheLearningPit@JamesNottinghm and share experiences in which we have been in the pit. Make sure they realize@it is part of the human experience! #MOEdChat
A4b My mother always told me that it'll probably get worse, but eventually it'll get better, that is what I want kids to understand, one day you will "be #starinattheworldthroughmyrearview just looking back at the world from another level" #couldntfindthegif#moedchat
I love @unity3d I struggle with it a lot since I am not very skilled, but I love it. @cospaces paired with @structure is my go to for #VR experiences #moedchat

They have to experience success to build confidence, so I find ways for every student to be successful, even if it is small. More pages read than last week, participated in a turn and talk, etc. #moedchat
A5 providing low floor high ceiling tasks allows ALL students to have a voice in the classroom and feel confident that they have something to contribute. Also focusing on multiple methods allows Ss to see that there isn't just one way to solve a pblm #moedchat
A5: show Ss when you make mistakes and stumbled, let Ss and be there for them when they stumble, give big leaps in small doses or steps, little steps and lead to big jumps. #MOEdChat
A5 Recognition. Every student is good at something. Find that student's gifts and celebrate them. I always had the Howie Awards every month to share excellence in every student. #MOedchat
@awall777 A S, EW, is working on this in G Drawings. Pretty cool just trying it from scratch. I told them they could search icons. This one went in another direction. Do NOT NOT USE GOOGLE DRAWINGS! #moedchat
Start small. Give students manageable tasks and celebrate their success. Then move into more challenging items, keep a expectations, and provide feedback along the way. Allow students to retake assessments and be honest with them. Show your students that you value them. #MOedchat
A5 give them opportunities to be successful and let them know you are proud of them and when they fail help them find the positives develop that culture of growth not failure. #moedchat
A5 - really taking my time at the start of each year to build relationships. Get to know them so they feel confident opening up. Throw the odd fist pump in there also. #moedchat
A5: I always tried to create a culture of celebration in my classroom. When kids met a goal or made an improvement, we celebrated. It really is as simple as looking them in the eye and saying, ”Wow, that was awesome!” #MOEdChat
A5 I always deny requests like “Is this good?” It is always “What do you think?” Kids need to make up their own mind on the quality of their work whenever possible #moedchat
A5 relationship and celebrations coupled with high expectstions. If I keep my expectations high and consistent and continue to celebrate their success they know its sincere praise! #moedchat
A5: I like to use this line: Don't be afraid of anything that cannot eat you. I don't see also say, We are all giants in the world. We should walk as such. #MOedchat
It really is heavy lifting, but thee is some software that takes that part out if you can afford it, I like @unity3d for being free for educators, no knocking the paid stuff though, it is a big job #MOedchat

A6 - try to show them #GoogleSlides isn't the only option to present. Try to encourage them to be different. They will be competing with others in life. You want to be different. #moedchat
Be flexible with your assessments! If you have a student that is an incredible writer don’t give them a pen and paper test. If you have a student who is a tremendous orator give them the opportunity to speak on the topic. We must be learning and student centric always! #MOedchat
A6 My “Never Event” is that a kid can’t learn about what they are interested in, that is my job. Currently working with a kid to learn to play the guitar, one to program a robot, and one to make “art of gymnastics” #ifyoucandreamwelltrytodoit#moedchat
That’s great. I also like to encourage students to think of problems that are impacting them right now and push them to develop real world and practical solutions. Then, we talk about implementation and what it would take to make it a reality. #MOedchat
That's keeping it real, being authentic, and building relationships. When you students feel safe in your classroom -- that's when this magic starts to happen. #moedchat
A6: Validate a student by saying, "You're right. You have a good point." Many times, an 8th grader will call out another on a poor choice in the classroom. #moedchat
A6 - I ask for their ideas on how to solve problems no matter how big the problem. Kids are creative they enjoy giving input especially when the question is not followed by 4 predefined answers...or worse...the chapter review qs!!! #moedchat
A3- Our 4th grade team has a #PBL that is about a world changer, someone with high moral character traits. We are pulling in the community as much as we can. We both need each other to build strong positive communities. #Moedchat
A6: It might be considered old school, but I encourage students to express themselves through their daily writings in their writer's notebooks. Prompts might be about their book or their personal experience. Sometimes they write and sometimes they draw. #moedchat
A6 I ask them if I can share their ideas and/or work with others, sometimes on social media. They get really excited about the wider audience. #moedchat
A6 give them a platform. We have the connections. We have the opportunity. Show them what their audience can be and set them free to share their ideas. #MOedchat
A6: I have stopped saying No, or finding something else. If a student wants to end world hunger reversing the polarity of a shrink ray, I say ok, what do we need to do and learn to make that happen. Let them dream, just say ”ok, now what” #moedchat
A6: Validate a student by saying, "You're right. You have a good point." Many times, an 8th grader will call out another on a poor choice in the classroom. #moedchat
That's awesome. You have to involve your students and let them have their ideas and feel heard. Even when sometimes those ideas area silly, you should indulge them. #MOedchat
@joshchoward You know, I had a kid looking up Tupac images in detention today. We ended up working on the 13 colonies, -East side- , kid wasn't feeling it, yo. #moedchat
Thank you so much for joining #moedchat tonight. You all brought the fire, just like our boy Tupac. Make sure to follow your new people from the chat and come back next week for some more!! Thanks @moedchat for letting me drive the car this week!
A6: I have stopped saying No, or finding something else. If a student wants to end world hunger reversing the polarity of a shrink ray, I say ok, what do we need to do and learn to make that happen. Let them dream, just say ”ok, now what” #moedchat
A5- Provide them opportunities where they can be successful and feel pride. Make it known that they are doing great things and that your proud. #Moedchat
