Would 12 people be interested in purchasing 1 of these sleeping bags? I'd really love to give my 12 students, traveling to the Rockies with me, their own bag that they could keep after the trip. Thoughts @PrincipalFrench, @Craig_SPPS@korytellers#mnlead? https://t.co/u3N6Yg39Vp
Hi Everyone, Bret from Richfield. Watching the #Wild and #wolves tonight. I'm an Elementary Principal. Snow will be gone by April 31st. Bahahahahaha #mnlead
#mnlead Bill Groskreutz - Math/tech coordinator/track coach East Central (Sandstone/Askov)
I really hope I see green grass soon.. Just had to cancel our home track meet on Thursday.
I'm Mark from South St. Paul. I teach American History, Minnesota Studies and Current Events.
I think we'll see some green grass again by April 22... but snow will still be on the ground too. #mnlead
A1 Mentoring is taking the time to listen, offering advice when asked. I think mentoring is modeling then doing a feedback cycle. Although, some of my mentors are now friends...so maybe my answer should be different. #mnlead
A1 Mentoring is a relationship built on trust and respect in which there is a difference of experiences. Mentors are chosen by the mentees and the relationship allows both parties to benefit #mnlead#armymentoring#theteachersjourney
A1: All too often mentoring is seen as a limited time activity from the experienced to the novice, when in reality, it can be on-going for all of us. Growth is non-negotiable, how we purposefully influence others is up to you. #mnlead
A1 #mnlead To me, mentoring means having another person (or multiple people) that are there to listen to you, give guidance, provide feedback. Sometimes you need help w/the logistical paperwork side of teaching. Other times, an ear to listen. Other times, flat out help!
A1 Mentoring is a relationship built on trust and respect in which there is a difference of experiences. Mentors are chosen by the mentees and the relationship allows both parties to benefit #mnlead#armymentoring#theteachersjourney
LOVE this! Mentoring can take place between colleagues, a teacher and a student AND between students. Setting up the culture in your school could take time, but it is certainly worth it when everyone knows someone has their back. #mnlead A1
A1: mentoring/coaching is providing academic, emotional, and professional support. In my role, my job is to be there for the residents so that they have the tools to be successful in their classroom so that they can give 100% to their Ss. #mnlead
Absolutely. Having an assigned mentor doesn't automatically mean good or bad. But, finding someone who is genuine about being their & offering guidance is critical, especially for newer teachers. #mnlead A1
Great Point! I also look at Mentoring as a lifetime/career relationship… I’m still in touch with my mentee’s even if they’ve left the district… #mnlead
A1) agreed @APKRentz - It needs to be organic as well as transparent. All parties need to be “all in” and ready to promote change and a healthy school culture. #mnlead
It's a mouthful that I have been cultivating courtesy of @KimballRay & @artlaflamme it is the army definition of mentoring & the one I use in #theteachersjourney to discuss how we learn and grow, the differences between mentoring and coaching, & how we make others better #mnlead
I didn't know that I could take off more than 3 days when we had our second child during my first year of teaching. My mentor never mentioned that to me. I didn't know how to ask, or even that it was a possibility. #mnlead A1
@MarkJWestpfahl and @KevinSayerska Bring up a Great point! However, tonight I’m focusing Teaching and Mentoring… As Ts we should be mentoring/coaching our Students! #mnlead
Absolutely. I think those happening quickly and as needed. The more formalish side of things I think are when mentee may need support/advice/help. #mnlead
Assigning someone a mentor means you are forcing a relationship. It might work out, but those relationships need to have a basis in mutual trust and respect #mnlead
A1: Mentoring means coaching. We can mentor our teachers and students in much the same way. My 5 Promises to Keep as a Coach are here @middlewebhttps://t.co/iIk8p1Y5vV#mnlead
A2 #mnlead A little bit of both. I have been a formal mentor an an informal mentor to several teachers... some in my building & several not in my building. The formal can be overwhelming, as there are logistical things that have to be done.
A2. I’ve been mentored both formally and informally. My experiences have been excellent. I surrounded myself with folks who new better than me, more experienced and that I admired. They would encourage me, but loved me enough to correct me when necessary. #mnlead
there is a lot that would go into this type of system. I would start with a speed dating type of scenario, give new teachers an opportunity to meet lots of people that might be mentors, also cultivate the skills in mentors and mentor seekers #mnlead
A2: As a former GIP resident myself (2005-2006), I’ve received mentored/coached for the whole year. We also have teacher mentors in our building for new teachers. It’s important to create an environment where all are successful. #mnlead
realistically they should have mentors outside of the district and start developing mentors inside of it throughout their first year. The "mentor" we get when we start isn't really a mentor, they are a coach. #mnlead
I think Ts who feel #mentoring should be allowed to volunteer… I always tell my Mentee’s if you don’t feel comfortable w/ me, we’ll find someone you do feel comfortable with… #mnlead
A1 #mnlead And if you are open minded, the mentor can usually gain more from the mentee! There is always a new way to look at things and a fresh approach. I have been taught WAY more by my student teachers than I was able to offer them! ---> @TeacherMJP
A2: Both. Formal mentoring as a young teacher and lots of outreach mentoring my entire career from people like @Soup192@mahillmann and @BDuffrin . So much to learn and the best is from people you trust. #mnlead
A2 I'm still being mentored. There are people in my life who are my sounding boards, motivators, and listeners. They aren't afraid to express how they think and feel too. It keeps me grounded when I'm overextending. #mnlead
All of us have been mentored at some point in our careers. Chances are at multiple points. My formal mentor actually became a true mentor for a short period, I have found amazing mentors though at each stage of my career #mnlead
Joining late tonight after a good snow workout and hoping to catch up. I did my best to shovel it away, but I hope to see this gone by next week. A girl can dream, right? Jen, elem principal, from central MN saying hey! 👋🏼 #mnlead
A2) I almost look at mentors like my PLN and vise versa. Words of encouragement, insightful discussions, and lending an ear to listen when needed. #mnlead
I agree, small districts like mine however, don’t have those options. But that’s a Great Point. The relationship between the Instructional Coach and Mentee should be different than the Mentor/Mentee #mnlead
Jumping in late - A2. In thinking about this question, I realize I have many mentors from my various careers, education experiences - continue to be able to go to them for advice/guidance depending on their expertise. #MNLead
If I were in charge of it? Yes, I would actually train my entire staff to avail themselves as possible mentors. That way when the relationship develops, they will be better suited to do it successfully. #mnlead
A1- mentoring takes many different lenses, but ultimately it’s having someone to support, guide and challenge you in a safe way. Doesn’t matter if it’s peer to peer, staff to student, or colleague to colleague—safe network. #mnlead
Professional athletes have mentors, why can’t professional teachers ;-) it’s best practice and it’s a no brainer. I consider my “work-wife” @JenCoenen my mentor. She’s my rock when it comes to the teaching profession. #mnlead
The word "formal" means part of an induction process. It's less natural than other forms of mentoring but serves an important role in understanding and excelling in an organization. #mnlead
That is the great thing about Twitter! It allows you to look for advice world wide! Do you find you go to specific people with particular topics? #mnlead
I love this, and it's so true! Whenever I have visitors to the classroom, I always end up taking something away from the experience through conversations. Everyone has something to learn & something to offer #mnlead
In reply to
@MarkJWestpfahl, @mcarlstromDR, @bretdom, @TeacherMJP
I could see how this would be very effective, but I also see @mcarlstromDR's point about feasibility. I bet there would be a happy medium in many instances. Maybe first year is appointed, because many teachers wouldn't know who to turn to. 2nd year, teacher can choose. #mnlead
In reply to
@mcarlstromDR, @btcostello05, @mcarlstromDR
As a coach you have the amazing potential to be a mentor to nearly anyone, but it doesn't mean your relationship with each person will develop that way. It also doesn't mean it has to do so. Coaching is about skills, mentoring is about experiences. #mnlead
A2: Gary, former Supt from Illinois. I've been both a mentor and have been mentored in my adm. career, sharing “another way of doing things,” & avoided the tendency to tell the way to do something is “the way I used to do it.” #mnlead
Great! Mentors should have some kind of training. I established the Mentoring program for my district and then when we hired the Great @SueAkre we began to “train” our mentors! #mnlead
That is the great thing about Twitter! It allows you to look for advice world wide! Do you find you go to specific people with particular topics? #mnlead
I love how you mentioned they aren't afraid to express how they thing & feel. Mentors should be more than just cheerleaders. And this comes from trusting them, and also being willing to actually ask for feedback versus just validation. #mnlead
who do your teachers go to when the REALLY need someone. Not when they need to learn how to use the next new tool, but when they are about to deal with different experiences in life and career. #mnlead
A2- Navigating alone is tough. I have had mentors & also have had to give it my own best shot in the administrative role. That’s where making connections and being involved in #MESPA helped (and still does). Love the PLN option too—digital mentoring can be powerful. #mnlead
A3: We do not. In our school admin meet with new teachers regularly and if they need/want a mentor, we help set them up. Usually someone off their grade team. #mnlead
A3 #mnlead Our district does have an official mentor program, but it is mainly admin and district led. Besides in school mentors, we have district issued PAR coaches (https://t.co/Cep4BkWGL4) That help new teachers towards tenure.
You can appoint someone, but don't expect the new T to actually have a mentor relationship with them. Instead teach them how to find people. I found mentors in a school of 150 people, and only 23 staff members. It wasn't ideal but I found many more outside of school #mnlead
A2: Both. Formal mentoring as a young teacher and lots of outreach mentoring my entire career from people like @Soup192@mahillmann and @BDuffrin . So much to learn and the best is from people you trust. #mnlead
A1: All teachers new to the district in Farmington have a year long mentor through our Q-Comp program. Pretty structured meeting schedule and topics along with anytime support. Mentees/Mentors assigned by principal/teacher teams to find good fits. #mnlead
A3: Character Counts engages 3 mentor/coaches for the character development initiative in 21 Buffalo PS. They guide, advise, communicate & model, delivering PD on an on-going basis thru out school year. #mnlead
#nfldedu has a formal mentoring program led by our Director of Teaching & Learning. Mentors for new Gen Ed, Special Ed, and immersion teachers. Started an additional program that matches retirees with new teachers too (optional.) #mnlead
A3: I assume we have a mentor/mentee program, and I know they connect veteran Ts with new Ts. I know two of my colleagues who were mentors to new Ts. Our principal leads it. I’ve never been asked maybe because I’m very immature. Hahah #mnlead
A3.2: To add our mentoring program is teacher with teacher and admin is not a part of that process or information. It is important for new staff to be able to confide about their areas of growth without their supervisor always a part of it. #mnlead
That's a nice addition @mahillmann. I know a lot of amazing retired teachers, like @fectosrd, would love to do something like this and their experiences would be invaluable. #mnlead Q3
A3.1– our district has a formal mentor program that involves admin & teachers to support new staff. We typically assign a new staff to a teacher leader in the building outside the grade level. This way the newbie has a go to without feeling pressure within his/her team. #MNLead
Ideally your "assigned" mentors are adept at helping your inexperienced teachers find who they need and when. Mentoring isn't a singular thing. At any given time I have many mentors and I am available to mentor any number of potential others. #mnlead
That's a nice addition @mahillmann. I know a lot of amazing retired teachers, like @fectosrd, would love to do something like this and their experiences would be invaluable. #mnlead Q3
I'm not sure if it is as important as mentor/mentee as it just is having strong staff relationships. And strong admin/teacher relationships. Strong support & culture. #mnlead
A3 One new mentor our T union added was a once a month mentor meeting as a whole group. My newer teachers have said how much they enjoy the learning. Each month has a specific topic. #mnlead
A3.2– the mentor/mentee pair are given a skeletal list to cover as things come up in the school calendar, and they also do some classroom observations between the two. Both sides have been receptive to this. Helps builds trust & feel connected. #MNLead
My students still talk about the day when my mentor/former colleague took time out of his day to visit my preschool class. He offered to do a mini lesson, teaching me a few things while he was also teaching the Ss. #MNLead
It was a fabulous day having Mr. Pete, a friend/mentor/colleague from Dodge Nature Center visit us today! #NaturePreK Students has a blast exploring the ice, and seeing a school of fish on the camera definitely made it even more exciting! #JeffersPond#WeArePLSAS
I'm a huge fan of teachers looking out for teachers. You don;t have to be paid, and don't have to put it on your resume... Be there. That is the key. When newer teachers know they have support, they can focus on making new engaging experiences for their students. #mnlead
I love that they get together as a group, it gives your new people an opportunity to get to know more potential mentors in the district and also a chance to find more peers to connect with as well (that can be another important part of growth) #mnlead
Yes, I think some of them went in saying, "Is this going to be a waste of time?" It's after school so it has to be worth it, right? I've heard good feedback. #mnlead
Q4 - New Teachers or those older who can remember back that far, if you weren’t mentored, do you wish you had been? If you were mentored, how’d it help? #mnlead
It is important to have someone you can go to. Our program has a single mentor per building for each area (one SpEd, one GenEd, one immersion.) This allows us to identify someone who is a skilled coach and great listener. Essential for making people feel comfortable. #mnlead
paying a mentor fundamentally undermines the entire relationship. How can I really develop mutual trust and respect with someone I have to pay? #mnlead It can happen, but it makes the dynamic so much more awkward.
A4 #mnlead As a new teacher, I didn't have any idea of what I was supposed to be asking or looking for. There are so many logistical things in education that have nothing to do with direct interaction with students These were the things I wish I had more guidance with.
A4: Being mentored let me know I wasn't alone. I wasn't the only teacher experiencing certain issues. They gave examples of when they had the same issues. #mnlead
Q4 - New Teachers or those older who can remember back that far, if you weren’t mentored, do you wish you had been? If you were mentored, how’d it help? #mnlead
Agreed!!! Which is why @SocialStudiesMN makes a point to have sessions during the state Conference to support new teachers and create relationships between Ts’ #mnlead

A4: It was, and still is, so valuable. My mentor helped me understand institutional culture, personalities, community history, and so many things that would have taken me 20 years to figure out on my own. Knowledge becomes wisdom and wisdom focuses your strategy. #mnlead

I think that is fantastic, but I also reject the dogma our profession puts forth when we make it seem that only new teachers need mentors. Mentoring is an ongoing thing, we all need them at every stage of our careers. #mnlead

A4 #mnlead cont. When I am mentoring, I want to be able to offer ideas. I provide a shared Google Folder with lesson ideas, calendars, student samples & weekly updates to parents. They can all serve as a starting point. ADAPT to your need, don't have to reinvent right away.
A4 My first year I did not have a mentor, or much help at all. It was a lonely first year of many teaching failures for me. I left the profession because of it. Luckily my second go was filled with people who mentored me. #mnlead
A4: Being mentored was the best thing that a beginning teacher could have had. It’s an asset. My coach helped me locate curriculum, establish classroom management, unlock best practices in teaching and learning. He was invaluable. Now my role is to do the same. #mnlead
Q4 - New Teachers or those older who can remember back that far, if you weren’t mentored, do you wish you had been? If you were mentored, how’d it help? #mnlead
Where you been all my life! I'm here dropping a whole bunch of Mentoring from #theteachersjourney because someone said mentoring and it's like my bat symbol #mnlead
A4 I was in a small school and really felt most of the building was my mentor. There wasn’t a formal program, but I felt great support from fellow teachers and coaches. #mnlead
A4 #mnlead cont. One of the biggest things I stress to new teachers is to reflect. Write about what when good and what didn't. keep hyperlinks in your journal, or weekly updates. They will help IMMENSELY the following year(s) when planning again.

The idea that any of us are "self-made" is not only a myth, but it is harmful to our success in education, and life in general. Yes your hard work matters, but it isn't all that matters. #mnlead#theteachersjourney
A4. The mentoring program helped w getting brought up to speed on the big things I needed to know (finding supplies, curriculum materials, key events throughout the year, etc). If I needed something, I knew I could go to my mentor first for help, advice. #MNLead

I think that can be one of the biggest challenges. New teachers are not always aware of how much is "required" of them outside of normal business hours. They know they will need to lesson plan and grade outside of work hours... but the rest... it can be overwhelming. #mnlead
Niiiceee. #mnlead
As someone who's moved a bit, and who didn't have the best father (not abusive, just not the best), I often look for mentors, especially since I do best by seeing models/examples beforehand. Also to keep me on track.
A4: Was not either as T or Adm. It would have been helpful to have a caring and trusting relationship w/ another who could offer insights & possible solutions to problems I faced. #mnlead.
I understand the contractual obligation to pay people for what they do, in NJ it is common that the contract includes the stipend come from the mentee, if the district pays the stipends and if It also goes to the mentee, that helps #mnlead
It’s vital to give new teachers lifelines in the form of mentors. Equally important is assigning mentors who have had appropriate coaching training. Growth opportunity for both sides! #mnlead

Smart thinking. Find people who are teaching relatively the same thing and ask if you can be a part of a Google Doc sharing. It is always great to see what others are doing. Often times though, docs don;t make sense... so having recaps or weekly updates helps for context. #mnlead
#mnlead A4 Mentors keep me on track, especially as a procrastinator. They also allow me to reflect and for someone to vent with. As someone who sees the inequities of Edu AND wants to change them, this incredibly stressful outlook requires a trusted figure to support,
This is very true. All of us have had people who stepped into support us along the way — formally and not so formally. I think a key is to seek your own mentors as well. Who do you admire? What makes them that way? Don’t leave this to chance, take control yourself! #mnlead

This is why a collaborative learning model is so necessary and so powerful. Working as a team can be much more powerful AND innovative than working alone. Jim Smith jumping in after another round of the task that shall not be named (shoveling) #mnlead
It was tough. I was teaching on a reservation, 6th grade. I chose to live there. While I had many positives in retrospect, I needed the change. Look at what happened now! I love what I do. #mnlead
A4 #mnlead I feel like this happens more with schools who have great community. Building that community can take a long time though, especially if you are in a toxic environment. Effective leadership always helps to ease transitions :)
#mnlead A4 2/2 As an EoC, also, it can be really isolating because of the lack of other EoCs in schools. Mentors of Color can help that, we share similar perspectives. Experiences.

I have a list of potential mentors that I can call upon anytime (yes literally written down on a spreadsheet that includes my personal, professional, and academic needs over the course of 5 years, because it helps me grow and helps me find balance)
#mnlead thanks to @artlaflamme
Down in Sells, AZ on the Tohono O'odham Reservation. It's a special place in the Sonoran Desert. There are times when I wish I could have a do over and go back. #mnlead
A5 #mnlead ABSOLUTELY... but that is the difficult part. "Benificial" comes with strings attached. Who knows what one person's beneficial is? My mentor was always there is I had questions, & encouraged me to ask them... but when you don;t know WHAT/WHY to ask, it's harder.
#mnlead Yep! Schoology groups have been wonderful after I was able to access them. Especially since creating lesson materials by hand is a process fraught with "Is this designed well?" and "OMG, I have no tiiimmee!"
You bet. Our PLN is really a mentoring network. I do worry that we send the message to new teachers, administrators, and others that they need to “wait” for a mentor. Own your growth…be proactive. #mnlead

Speaking of mentors, Twitter opened a whole new world of mentors! There are people who are only a phone call or tweet away. My world is better because of it. #mnlead
A5– Take your time, it’s okay to make mistakes, ask questions, reflect every day, ENJOY and create AWESOME relationships with kids (and peers), and take time for yourself. You’re not good to anyone if you’re not your best self. #mnlead
A5 #mnlead. That's why i think it is critical for a mentor to anticipate things that a new teacher may not know, or may not be comfortable bringing up. Providing respect, rather than just assuming they should give it to you helps guide the trust relatonship.
And I think, especially as it relates to building/district process and/or culture, the Mentor should hit you with that right away! But great point! #mnlead
A5: Tough question. Not sure what I would have wanted to know. Am sure that I am thankful for those who informally mentored me and helped me on the journey when I needed it. #mnlead
A5 Things that I knew that were reinforced over the years: 1) Relationships are top priority. 2) Be well-prepared. 3) Apply the 4-H motto every day: make the best better. #mnlead
A5. The only way to figure it out is by going through/experiencing it, but it'd be nice to know right away what teachers to connect with and which ones to approach cautiously (and this is true for any workplace, not just education...) #MNLead
A5 #mnlead and let the new teachers know that it is ok to say no. I know this is tough for them, as many want to prove their worth & feel they have to be seen as a team player, but Admin needs to let them know up front it IS ok to say no.
#mnlead And frankly sometimes, (or in my case, a lotta times) you don't even know there IS something to ask. I usually realize that AFTER I've created my lesson.
Thomas, you gotta learn how to code switch. There aren’t many ToC in Rochester, yet I make it work. I was taught from my father that assimilation & code switching is a must to be successful in the profession. Would a mentor (teacher of color) supported me differently? IDK #mnlead

Clean, pristine, but ominous…
Feels like end of days

Yes. That is the trickiest part. As a new teacher, you don't want to show vulnerability... but it is ok. (I know, I know...easy for me to say NOW!) Googling lesson plan ideas and then adapting them to my teaching style was a lot of my first 3 years. #mnlead

#mnlead Seeing the things I do, when I volunteered/worked with children before entering Teacher Education, my past experiences as an outsider/immigrant has opened my eyes to a LOT of inequities, esp. w/ Brown/Black Ss. It's a struggle. Been blessed to have mentors who understand
It's been going for five years! Crazy how the time flies. I remember when @mlament and @jenhegna were so kind to invite me into the the #mnlead family.
