    Here comes Question 1!! #mnlead
  • mcarlstromDR Apr 15 @ 8:07 PM EDT
Q1 - What does Mentoring mean to you? How does it look? #mnlead
  • Dale_Chu Apr 15 @ 8:08 PM EDT
HAPPENING NOW: @cook_amy24 hosting a discussion on school culture. Follow along at #mnlead!
  • APKRentz Apr 15 @ 8:08 PM EDT
A1: I think the strongest mentorships have formed organically. Mutual trust and respect. Open to communication & support. #mnlead
  • mcarlstromDR Apr 15 @ 8:09 PM EDT
Dale, there’s been a slight change… Due to weather issues, I’m hosting on Mentoring tonight! Amy’ll pick it up next Week! #mnlead
    In reply to @Dale_Chu, @cook_amy24
  • KevinSayerska Apr 15 @ 8:09 PM EDT
A1) mentoring to me takes on many forms... it means being there for someone professionally but it also can take form with students as well. #mnlead
  • bretdom - Moderator Apr 15 @ 8:09 PM EDT
A1 Mentoring is taking the time to listen, offering advice when asked. I think mentoring is modeling then doing a feedback cycle. Although, some of my mentors are now friends...so maybe my answer should be different. #mnlead
  • APKRentz Apr 15 @ 8:09 PM EDT
A1: As a mentor - making sure you are there to listen. Only offer suggestions but not FIX anything. #mnlead
  • btcostello05 Apr 15 @ 8:09 PM EDT
A1 Mentoring is a relationship built on trust and respect in which there is a difference of experiences. Mentors are chosen by the mentees and the relationship allows both parties to benefit #mnlead #armymentoring #theteachersjourney
  • MrEugenePark Apr 15 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1. Mentoring is helping another grow. Helping them identify strengths and blind spots. #mnlead
  • chris_bussmann Apr 15 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1: All too often mentoring is seen as a limited time activity from the experienced to the novice, when in reality, it can be on-going for all of us. Growth is non-negotiable, how we purposefully influence others is up to you. #mnlead
  • MarkJWestpfahl Apr 15 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1 #mnlead To me, mentoring means having another person (or multiple people) that are there to listen to you, give guidance, provide feedback. Sometimes you need help w/the logistical paperwork side of teaching. Other times, an ear to listen. Other times, flat out help!
    In reply to @mcarlstromDR
  • bretdom - Moderator Apr 15 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1 What I keep bouncing back and forth is the idea of an assigned mentor vs. someone who becomes a natural mentor. There's a difference. #mnlead
  • mcarlstromDR Apr 15 @ 8:11 PM EDT
This is interesting Brian, having Mentee’s chose their Mentors… Is that difficult if they’re new to district/school or 1st year teacher? #mnlead
    In reply to @btcostello05
  • bretdom - Moderator Apr 15 @ 8:11 PM EDT
That's what I was trying to say. Thanks for articulating it @btcostello05. #mnlead
  • APKRentz Apr 15 @ 8:11 PM EDT
Absolutely. When you are new to a place a suggestion from someone is great, but natural mentors will be found. #mnlead
    In reply to @bretdom
  • MarkJWestpfahl Apr 15 @ 8:11 PM EDT
LOVE this! Mentoring can take place between colleagues, a teacher and a student AND between students. Setting up the culture in your school could take time, but it is certainly worth it when everyone knows someone has their back. #mnlead A1
    In reply to @KevinSayerska
  • mcarlstromDR Apr 15 @ 8:12 PM EDT
How about helping Mentee navigate building/district process/culture? #mnlead
    In reply to @APKRentz
  • btcostello05 Apr 15 @ 8:12 PM EDT
ALL of us need mentors, PLURAL, it is something we develop ongoing throughout our lives, beyond our careers. #mnlead #theteachersjourney
    In reply to @chris_bussmann
  • APKRentz Apr 15 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A1: My mentors are spread around. I do have some in my building, but I also have some around my division and my province! #mnlead
  • BVagasky Apr 15 @ 8:12 PM EDT
Bonnie Vagasky - BestPrep Program Manager - Scary is it's Just eight weeks away til June 15 #mnlead
  • mrsamol Apr 15 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A1: mentoring/coaching is providing academic, emotional, and professional support. In my role, my job is to be there for the residents so that they have the tools to be successful in their classroom so that they can give 100% to their Ss. #mnlead
  • ritaplatt Apr 15 @ 8:12 PM EDT
Hi #mnlead! Happy to see you all tonight! Guess what? Next year I'll be the principal of my school! YAHOO! I'm gonna need you, dear PLN.
  • MarkJWestpfahl Apr 15 @ 8:13 PM EDT
Absolutely. Having an assigned mentor doesn't automatically mean good or bad. But, finding someone who is genuine about being their & offering guidance is critical, especially for newer teachers. #mnlead A1
    In reply to @bretdom
  • mcarlstromDR Apr 15 @ 8:13 PM EDT
Great Point! I also look at Mentoring as a lifetime/career relationship… I’m still in touch with my mentee’s even if they’ve left the district… #mnlead
    In reply to @chris_bussmann
  • BVagasky Apr 15 @ 8:13 PM EDT
A1 - Love when mentoring goes both up and down; I learn a lot from young ppl #mnlead
  • KevinSayerska Apr 15 @ 8:13 PM EDT
A1) agreed @APKRentz - It needs to be organic as well as transparent. All parties need to be “all in” and ready to promote change and a healthy school culture. #mnlead
  • btcostello05 Apr 15 @ 8:14 PM EDT
It's a mouthful that I have been cultivating courtesy of @KimballRay & @artlaflamme it is the army definition of mentoring & the one I use in #theteachersjourney to discuss how we learn and grow, the differences between mentoring and coaching, & how we make others better #mnlead
    In reply to @bretdom, @KimballRay, @artlaflamme
  • MarkJWestpfahl Apr 15 @ 8:14 PM EDT
I didn't know that I could take off more than 3 days when we had our second child during my first year of teaching. My mentor never mentioned that to me. I didn't know how to ask, or even that it was a possibility. #mnlead A1
    In reply to @mcarlstromDR, @APKRentz
  • mcarlstromDR Apr 15 @ 8:14 PM EDT
@MarkJWestpfahl and @KevinSayerska Bring up a Great point! However, tonight I’m focusing Teaching and Mentoring… As Ts we should be mentoring/coaching our Students! #mnlead
  • APKRentz Apr 15 @ 8:14 PM EDT
Absolutely. I think those happening quickly and as needed. The more formalish side of things I think are when mentee may need support/advice/help. #mnlead
    In reply to @mcarlstromDR
  • mcarlstromDR Apr 15 @ 8:14 PM EDT
Question 2 on the way! #mnlead
  • mcarlstromDR Apr 15 @ 8:15 PM EDT
Q2 - Have you been mentored in your career? What’d it look like? Was it formal or informal? #mnlead
  • AssignmentHelpN Apr 15 @ 8:15 PM EDT

Congratulations Rita! That’s Awesome! The #mnlead family will still be here! ;-)
    In reply to @ritaplatt
  • MarkJWestpfahl Apr 15 @ 8:15 PM EDT
That's for reigning me in. Sometimes, I need someone there for me to help bring me back to the pack! ;) #mnlead
    In reply to @mcarlstromDR, @KevinSayerska
  • btcostello05 Apr 15 @ 8:15 PM EDT
Assigning someone a mentor means you are forcing a relationship. It might work out, but those relationships need to have a basis in mutual trust and respect #mnlead
    In reply to @bretdom
  • ritaplatt Apr 15 @ 8:16 PM EDT
A1: Mentoring means coaching. We can mentor our teachers and students in much the same way. My 5 Promises to Keep as a Coach are here @middleweb https://t.co/iIk8p1Y5vV #mnlead
  • mcarlstromDR Apr 15 @ 8:16 PM EDT
And Mentors don’t have to be in the subject matter… Not everyone is cut out to be a professional mentor, nor want the responsibility! #mnlead
    In reply to @MarkJWestpfahl, @bretdom
  • mcarlstromDR Apr 15 @ 8:16 PM EDT
    Absolutely! #mnlead

    Awesome news! Congrats! It's a blast. #mnlead
    In reply to @ritaplatt
  • MarkJWestpfahl Apr 15 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A2 #mnlead A little bit of both. I have been a formal mentor an an informal mentor to several teachers... some in my building & several not in my building. The formal can be overwhelming, as there are logistical things that have to be done.
    In reply to @mcarlstromDR
  • mcarlstromDR Apr 15 @ 8:17 PM EDT
And that’s something easy to share… Build trust in the relationship too! #mnlead
    In reply to @MarkJWestpfahl, @APKRentz
  • MrEugenePark Apr 15 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A2. I’ve been mentored both formally and informally. My experiences have been excellent. I surrounded myself with folks who new better than me, more experienced and that I admired. They would encourage me, but loved me enough to correct me when necessary. #mnlead
  • MarkJWestpfahl Apr 15 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A2 cont. #mnlead The informal part is almost more valuable, as it usually gets right to the heart of what you need.
    In reply to @mcarlstromDR
  • btcostello05 Apr 15 @ 8:17 PM EDT
there is a lot that would go into this type of system. I would start with a speed dating type of scenario, give new teachers an opportunity to meet lots of people that might be mentors, also cultivate the skills in mentors and mentor seekers #mnlead
    In reply to @mcarlstromDR
  • APKRentz Apr 15 @ 8:18 PM EDT
A2: I wouldn't have survived without mentors!! I've had them throughout my career. Most have been informal. They are the people I go to when I need advice. @ryanssiemens @Principal68 @brent_legault75 @taekwondenny #mnlead
    • mcarlstromDR Apr 15 @ 8:15 PM EDT
Q2 - Have you been mentored in your career? What’d it look like? Was it formal or informal? #mnlead
  • mrsamol Apr 15 @ 8:18 PM EDT
A2: As a former GIP resident myself (2005-2006), I’ve received mentored/coached for the whole year. We also have teacher mentors in our building for new teachers. It’s important to create an environment where all are successful. #mnlead
    • mcarlstromDR Apr 15 @ 8:15 PM EDT

A2: I have ALWAYS had a mentor or three and always want to.https://t.co/U3Mek8b9Co #mnlead
  • btcostello05 Apr 15 @ 8:19 PM EDT
realistically they should have mentors outside of the district and start developing mentors inside of it throughout their first year. The "mentor" we get when we start isn't really a mentor, they are a coach. #mnlead
    In reply to @mcarlstromDR
  • ritaplatt Apr 15 @ 8:19 PM EDT
    #mnlead this just in...
  • mcarlstromDR Apr 15 @ 8:19 PM EDT
I think Ts who feel #mentoring should be allowed to volunteer… I always tell my Mentee’s if you don’t feel comfortable w/ me, we’ll find someone you do feel comfortable with… #mnlead
    In reply to @btcostello05, @bretdom
  • MarkJWestpfahl Apr 15 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A1 #mnlead And if you are open minded, the mentor can usually gain more from the mentee! There is always a new way to look at things and a fresh approach. I have been taught WAY more by my student teachers than I was able to offer them! ---> @TeacherMJP

That Autonomy is so key! #mnlead
    In reply to @ritaplatt, @middleweb
  • chris_bussmann Apr 15 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A2: Both. Formal mentoring as a young teacher and lots of outreach mentoring my entire career from people like @Soup192 @mahillmann and @BDuffrin . So much to learn and the best is from people you trust. #mnlead
  • bretdom - Moderator Apr 15 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A2 I'm still being mentored. There are people in my life who are my sounding boards, motivators, and listeners. They aren't afraid to express how they think and feel too. It keeps me grounded when I'm overextending. #mnlead
  • btcostello05 Apr 15 @ 8:20 PM EDT
All of us have been mentored at some point in our careers. Chances are at multiple points. My formal mentor actually became a true mentor for a short period, I have found amazing mentors though at each stage of my career #mnlead
    • mcarlstromDR Apr 15 @ 8:15 PM EDT
Q2 - Have you been mentored in your career? What’d it look like? Was it formal or informal? #mnlead

Joining late tonight after a good snow workout and hoping to catch up. I did my best to shovel it away, but I hope to see this gone by next week. A girl can dream, right? Jen, elem principal, from central MN saying hey! 👋🏼 #mnlead
  • ritaplatt Apr 15 @ 8:21 PM EDT
Yes! I truly love all that @DanielPink says about autonomy, mastery, and purpose. It guides all I do. Great video here:https://t.co/3PTcw3jb4H #mnlead

I wonder, as we say "formal mentoring" are we really talking about mentoring? Or are those people really coaches (equally necessary) #mnlead
    In reply to @chris_bussmann, @Soup192, @mahillmann, @BDuffrin
  • KevinSayerska Apr 15 @ 8:22 PM EDT
A2) I almost look at mentors like my PLN and vise versa. Words of encouragement, insightful discussions, and lending an ear to listen when needed. #mnlead
  • mcarlstromDR Apr 15 @ 8:22 PM EDT
I agree, small districts like mine however, don’t have those options. But that’s a Great Point. The relationship between the Instructional Coach and Mentee should be different than the Mentor/Mentee #mnlead
    In reply to @btcostello05
  • ADutke Apr 15 @ 8:23 PM EDT
Jumping in late - A2. In thinking about this question, I realize I have many mentors from my various careers, education experiences - continue to be able to go to them for advice/guidance depending on their expertise. #MNLead
  • mcarlstromDR Apr 15 @ 8:23 PM EDT
Absolutely! We should always be looking for mentors! Great Point! #mnlead
    In reply to @bretdom
  • btcostello05 Apr 15 @ 8:23 PM EDT
If I were in charge of it? Yes, I would actually train my entire staff to avail themselves as possible mentors. That way when the relationship develops, they will be better suited to do it successfully. #mnlead
    In reply to @mcarlstromDR
  • JenO2687 Apr 15 @ 8:23 PM EDT
A1- mentoring takes many different lenses, but ultimately it’s having someone to support, guide and challenge you in a safe way. Doesn’t matter if it’s peer to peer, staff to student, or colleague to colleague—safe network. #mnlead
  • mrsamol Apr 15 @ 8:23 PM EDT
Professional athletes have mentors, why can’t professional teachers ;-) it’s best practice and it’s a no brainer. I consider my “work-wife” @JenCoenen my mentor. She’s my rock when it comes to the teaching profession. #mnlead

The word "formal" means part of an induction process. It's less natural than other forms of mentoring but serves an important role in understanding and excelling in an organization. #mnlead
    • btcostello05 Apr 15 @ 8:21 PM EDT

  • MarkJWestpfahl Apr 15 @ 8:25 PM EDT
I could see how this would be very effective, but I also see @mcarlstromDR's point about feasibility. I bet there would be a happy medium in many instances. Maybe first year is appointed, because many teachers wouldn't know who to turn to. 2nd year, teacher can choose. #mnlead

  • btcostello05 Apr 15 @ 8:25 PM EDT
As a coach you have the amazing potential to be a mentor to nearly anyone, but it doesn't mean your relationship with each person will develop that way. It also doesn't mean it has to do so. Coaching is about skills, mentoring is about experiences. #mnlead

  • GSmit4Character Apr 15 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A2: Gary, former Supt from Illinois. I've been both a mentor and have been mentored in my adm. career, sharing “another way of doing things,” & avoided the tendency to tell the way to do something is “the way I used to do it.” #mnlead
  • mcarlstromDR Apr 15 @ 8:25 PM EDT
Great! Mentors should have some kind of training. I established the Mentoring program for my district and then when we hired the Great @SueAkre we began to “train” our mentors! #mnlead

I love how you mentioned they aren't afraid to express how they thing & feel. Mentors should be more than just cheerleaders. And this comes from trusting them, and also being willing to actually ask for feedback versus just validation. #mnlead

A2- Navigating alone is tough. I have had mentors & also have had to give it my own best shot in the administrative role. That’s where making connections and being involved in #MESPA helped (and still does). Love the PLN option too—digital mentoring can be powerful. #mnlead
  • APKRentz Apr 15 @ 8:28 PM EDT
A3: We do not. In our school admin meet with new teachers regularly and if they need/want a mentor, we help set them up. Usually someone off their grade team. #mnlead
    • mcarlstromDR Apr 15 @ 8:26 PM EDT
Q3 - Does your school or district have a formal mentor - mentee program? How does it work? Who “Leads it” Teachers or Admins? #mnlead
  • MarkJWestpfahl Apr 15 @ 8:28 PM EDT
A3 #mnlead Our district does have an official mentor program, but it is mainly admin and district led. Besides in school mentors, we have district issued PAR coaches (https://t.co/Cep4BkWGL4) That help new teachers towards tenure.

You can appoint someone, but don't expect the new T to actually have a mentor relationship with them. Instead teach them how to find people. I found mentors in a school of 150 people, and only 23 staff members. It wasn't ideal but I found many more outside of school #mnlead

You bet. Our PLN is really a mentoring network. I do worry that we send the message to new teachers, administrators, and others that they need to “wait” for a mentor. Own your growth…be proactive. #mnlead
    • btcostello05 Apr 15 @ 8:48 PM EDT
I have a list of potential mentors that I can call upon anytime (yes literally written down on a spreadsheet that includes my personal, professional, and academic needs over the course of 5 years, because it helps me grow and helps me find balance) #mnlead thanks to @artlaflamme

Speaking of mentors, Twitter opened a whole new world of mentors! There are people who are only a phone call or tweet away. My world is better because of it. #mnlead

A5– Take your time, it’s okay to make mistakes, ask questions, reflect every day, ENJOY and create AWESOME relationships with kids (and peers), and take time for yourself. You’re not good to anyone if you’re not your best self. #mnlead
  • MarkJWestpfahl Apr 15 @ 8:50 PM EDT
A5 #mnlead. That's why i think it is critical for a mentor to anticipate things that a new teacher may not know, or may not be comfortable bringing up. Providing respect, rather than just assuming they should give it to you helps guide the trust relatonship.

  • mcarlstromDR Apr 15 @ 8:51 PM EDT
And I think, especially as it relates to building/district process and/or culture, the Mentor should hit you with that right away! But great point! #mnlead

  • ADutke Apr 15 @ 8:52 PM EDT
A5. The only way to figure it out is by going through/experiencing it, but it'd be nice to know right away what teachers to connect with and which ones to approach cautiously (and this is true for any workplace, not just education...) #MNLead
  • MarkJWestpfahl Apr 15 @ 8:52 PM EDT
A5 #mnlead and let the new teachers know that it is ok to say no. I know this is tough for them, as many want to prove their worth & feel they have to be seen as a team player, but Admin needs to let them know up front it IS ok to say no.

#mnlead And frankly sometimes, (or in my case, a lotta times) you don't even know there IS something to ask. I usually realize that AFTER I've created my lesson.
    • MarkJWestpfahl Apr 15 @ 8:49 PM EDT
A5 #mnlead ABSOLUTELY... but that is the difficult part. "Benificial" comes with strings attached. Who knows what one person's beneficial is? My mentor was always there is I had questions, & encouraged me to ask them... but when you don;t know WHAT/WHY to ask, it's harder.

Thomas, you gotta learn how to code switch. There aren’t many ToC in Rochester, yet I make it work. I was taught from my father that assimilation & code switching is a must to be successful in the profession. Would a mentor (teacher of color) supported me differently? IDK #mnlead
    • shadow_uzumaki Apr 15 @ 8:47 PM EDT
#mnlead A4 2/2 As an EoC, also, it can be really isolating because of the lack of other EoCs in schools. Mentors of Color can help that, we share similar perspectives. Experiences.
      • shadow_uzumaki Apr 15 @ 8:46 PM EDT
#mnlead A4 Mentors keep me on track, especially as a procrastinator. They also allow me to reflect and for someone to vent with. As someone who sees the inequities of Edu AND wants to change them, this incredibly stressful outlook requires a trusted figure to support,

Yes. That is the trickiest part. As a new teacher, you don't want to show vulnerability... but it is ok. (I know, I know...easy for me to say NOW!) Googling lesson plan ideas and then adapting them to my teaching style was a lot of my first 3 years. #mnlead

#mnlead Seeing the things I do, when I volunteered/worked with children before entering Teacher Education, my past experiences as an outsider/immigrant has opened my eyes to a LOT of inequities, esp. w/ Brown/Black Ss. It's a struggle. Been blessed to have mentors who understand
