Hi, Vicki from PA. Tech coach and co-teacher of cross-curricular HS Cultural & Literary Studies Course. I teach the Geography part of the course. #engsschat
Hi , my name ands Candice Hannah and I am a preservice teacher . I am in field observations the first half other school and will be student teaching Modern WroldHistory the second half of the year . So excited to chat with y’all. #sschat#engsschat
Chris from Bloomington, IN. I teach world history for a private online HS affiliated w/ Indiana Univ. I'm also one of the #sschat co-leaders. #engsschat
A1: I define a formative assessment as a way to see if students are understanding the current concept. They can be self-assessments, short and quick! #engsschat#sschat#engchat#edchat#ssvpln
A1: A formative assessment is a low stakes way to see how students are comprehending the skill/content you are teaching. It just as much for the teacher to evaluate their practice as it is for the students to see where they are. #engsschat
A1: In my opinion, formative assessment is a great way for feedback and information regarding what I'm delivering in the classroom. And I LOVE that it can come in so many FORMs! #engsschat
A1: I think formative assessment is assessment that typically takes place during instruction and monitor student/teacher growth. (Thx @erinhone712) #engsschat#eloned
A1: Checking for understanding to see what students are learning and any gaps that can be filled. Also great for T to reflect on instruction. #engsschat
A1) Formative assessments are everything we do to learn about where our Ss are - questioning, warm ups, exit tickets, observations, presentations, etc. #engsschat
Yes! Formative assessment can be designed and constructed to meet the teacher and students' needs and to authentically measure understanding! #engsschat
Hi there! I’m Michael Zelnik, I’m from Columbus, Ohio, and I will be certified to teach Social Studies after completing my Masters of Education program. #engsschat#sschat#ssvpln
What happens when students are not demonstrating learning when you do a quick check? Do you use formative assessment to tell you that it's time to reteach or back up? #engsschat
A1 Any assignments where Ss are still learning about concepts/ideas, both formally & informally. They could be practicing probs, answering ?s, defining vocab, etc. As Ts this helps us know where they are in the learning process. #engsschat
Anything SPECIFIC. It’s hard for kids to make the connection between percents and what they actually need to do with it. Let them know what they actually need to work on! I will even tie different activities based off what they need help with. #engsschat
Authentic is one of my favorite words this year when it comes to my teaching and how I act with my students. I love that authentic and formative assessment can go hand in hand! Thanks! #engsschat
A:1 I define formal assessment as anything that allows a teacher and student to understand and reflect on that student’s understanding. Formal assessment can take on many different forms that all have different benefits for the teacher and the student. #sschat#engsschat#CCED336
A1) I'm a little behind from finishing making dinner, but I always think of formative assessment as giving you information that inFORMs your instruction & lets Ss see where they are in the process. #engsschat
I agree, formative assessments are for the students’ benefit; they should help the teacher keep the students up to speed so that by the time you assess in a summative manner, they’re prepared. #engsschat#sschat#engchat#edchat#ssvpln
A2. A common formative assessment I’ve seen is a daily bell ringer to check whether students understand the previous day’s lesson. #engsschat#sschat#ssvpln
A2: I like to use Quizizz, Socrative, and Google Forms to collect formative assessment info. Can discuss commonly misunderstood information & personalize feedback/teaching/extra resources to Ss based on results. #engsschat
A2: At least once a week I ask my students to fill out an index card. On one side, answer today's EQ to the best of your ability. On the other, tell me something you think I need to know (i.e. having a bad week, feeling sick, don't like my seat placement, etc.) #engsschat
A2: I'm a cyber school teacher, so google forms are literally my best friend. I use them for comprehension checks, as well as self-reflection for the students. That way, I can see if they're understood the material AND if they were on task during the lesson #engsschat
A2) I teach in a kind of weird setting (online, asynchronous, self-paced, rolling enrollment) but assignments are a type of formative assessment b/c I let Ss make revisions. They also have un-graded quizzes after every other lesson. #engsschat
A2 in a PBL classroom any step of the writing/creating/learning process is fair game for a formative assessment. Reading tasks, Jot lists, Outlines,,Drafts, Final copies, Reflections, etc. #sschat#engsschat
Q2: Using a 3,2,1 exit ticket allows students to say what they found interesting, what they learned, and a question they have all help assess what a teacher should touch on the following day. #engsschat! #sschat#engchat#edchat#ssvpln
I like using tools like this too. Sometimes, though, Ts tell me that it's hard to make time for this kind of data analysis. How do you make sure you have time to personalize feedback or instruction? #engsschat
A2) I love using @quizizz for quick and fun formative assessments. Kids love how they move at their own pace. I love that it's fun and gives great data!!
#engsschat
A2- in the past I’ve used @GRADECAM and this year I’m using @ZipGrade to create quick assignments. I can then do an item analysis and see what individual students need. I then regroup kids based on needs. #engsschat
This is the right attitude to have as a pre-service teacher. I'm glad you're participating in this chat! This is the kind of love learning we want from all of our teachers! Welcome to the profession. #engsschat

Yes! Ss have been loving @quizizz! It's nice because students can complete on their own and receive that feedback in class and out of class, too. #engsschat
I really enjoy this idea! Would you use this google form for your purposes only or would you post student responses where all students could see? #sschat#engsschat#CCED336
I like asking students to write down one thing they understand really well and one they are still unclear on for an exit ticket. #sschat#ssvpln#engsschat
Some formative assessments used in my classes at GCC are exit slips, ungraded short answers, and questions. I do not teach English yet, but when I am teaching Tang Soo Do, I ask questions and have students try techniques to determine what they need to work on. #engsschat
I'm glad you mentioned this, because I don't know if Ts often realize that we can use formative assessment to check for emotional learning/well-being as well. Kudos to you for doing this! #engsschat
A2: At least once a week I ask my students to fill out an index card. On one side, answer today's EQ to the best of your ability. On the other, tell me something you think I need to know (i.e. having a bad week, feeling sick, don't like my seat placement, etc.) #engsschat
A2: The types of formative assessments I typically use are: Quizizz, Kahoot, Socrative, Plickers, Entrance/Exit tickets, and polls. I do find it hard to give individual feedback at times by using these methods.
#engsschat! #sschat#engchat#edchat
A2. I use @plickers in the middle of lectures to see if they understand what we went over. I’m also a fan of Think Pair Shares to discuss material. #engsschat
And thank you to YOU for coming out tonight as well. Twitter makes us better teachers (and I'm sure this is even more true when we're starting out.) #engsschat
In reply to

Depending on when/what I'm assessing, time built into class. I also teach online and am able to personalize feedback/resources very easily to individual students. I can PM them or take them into a break out room during a live session or follow-up after class. #engsschat
Sometimes I get upset when I feel some of my students aren't engaged. This helps me realize that the problem generally has nothing to do with me or my class - their mind is elsewhere and usually its for reasons that matter more than my class... empathy is important. #engsschat
I also wonder if you could make the argument that any correspondence between you and Ss is a form of formative assessment. You have to determine their needs in a different way than a brick-and-mortar T. #engsschat
A2) I teach in a kind of weird setting (online, asynchronous, self-paced, rolling enrollment) but assignments are a type of formative assessment b/c I let Ss make revisions. They also have un-graded quizzes after every other lesson. #engsschat
Yes. If you are intimidated at all you can search for pre-made ones to modify or just build a small formative assessment to try with Ss. It's definitely engaging for my HS Ss too! I also have my HS Ss build them as warm-ups too #engsschat
I saw something recently that said "instead of saying that the student is giving ME a hard time, we need to think that they are HAVING a hard time instead". This stuck with me. Love your empathy focus! #engsschat
A2: One effective formative assessment that I have seen is student journals. As students reflect on content or other teacher guided prompts, teachers are able to gain a deeper understanding of students’ thought processes and understandings #sschat#engsschat#CCED336
A3 - For me all assessment is formative. It provides me with information about student learning so I can make better teaching choices. #sschat#engsschat
A3: I think that formative assessments are used much more frequently than summative and not necessarily need graded. Summatives are useful at the end of a topic to make sure the student understands and can convey understanding of a topic. #engsschat#sshat#edchat#ssvlpn
The difference between formative and summative assessments is that the summative assessment comes at the end of a chapter or unit. Many formative assessment will have happened prior to the summative #sschat#engsschat#ssvpln
I'm a tremendous fan of journals. Besides providing a deeper understanding of Ss' thought process, I find that it also helps students with generative thinking, as coming up with original ideas can be difficult for kids. #engsschat
A3) Summative assessment is graded and is mostly meant to assess performance, while formative assessment provides information. I think that formative assessment is more important because it can help teachers check student understanding. #engsschat
A3: Formative influences my future planning for the unit, how I phrase and say things during instruction, and drives what we explore. Summative summarizes what we have talked about and ties things up in a bow #engsschat
A3 - Formative is ongoing; summative is more final. There are purposes in both; however, I believe formative gives teachers a better understanding of what students really understand as these types of assessments aren't a one-time snapshot. #engsschat
A3: Formative Assessments drive the learning process. Summative Assessments drive the grading process... Formative Assessments are so much more important! #engsschat
A3: The difference between formative and summative assessments is that the summative assessment comes at the end of a chapter or unit. Many formative assessment will have happened prior to the summative #sschat#engsschat#ssvpln
A3: Formative is more frequent & looking at smaller amount of objectives. Summative is culminating. Both are necessary and I also like to include #retrievalpractice woven throughout my units to increase learning #engsschat
Formative: quick checks to inform me of what they know and what they don’t understand v. Summative: What the students have learned. This is a graded assessment. Formative leads to summative and both are equally important #edchat#engsschat#sschat
A3. Formative Assessments check what you are currently learning. Summarize Assessments test how well you know the material since the unit began. They’re equally important. Formatives should daily growth and Summatives show long-term retention. #engsschat#sschat#ssvpln
Racing analagy: Formative is beneficial during the race to track progress and see if adjustments should be made during the race. Summative assessments are best at the end of the race, to review performance, see how you did, & how to improve for the next race #engsschat#edchat
I like the definition of formative assessments as ongoing- one could ask students the same question/assessment two days in a row to see if by the end and working through the concept they get it! #engsschat#sshat#edchat#ssvlpn
I am going to push back on this a little bit to keep this discussion lively. Is there a point in your teaching where an assessment tells you "once and for all" that a student grasps a concept/masters a skill? #engsschat
A3 - For me all assessment is formative. It provides me with information about student learning so I can make better teaching choices. #sschat#engsschat
A3: Formative: quick checks to inform me of what they know and what they don’t understand v. Summative: What the students have learned. This is a graded assessment. Formative leads to summative and both are equally important #edchat#engsschat#sschat
A3 The purpose is different. Formative informs the next step in learning and teaching. Summative is more final and shows what was learned. Graded things can be formative if they are used to inform future actions. #engsschat
@Plickers is an app great for assessment. Ss are given a unique “bar code”. I then ask students to answer multiple choice questions using that bar code. I scan everyone’s answers and the app immediately tells me what each person answered #engsschat
A3: Here's a picture that we analyzed deeply in class. Who is the chef? Who is the Guest? What is the soup? Very interesting view on formative v. summative assessments!! #SSVPLN#engsschat#sschat
Racing analogy: Formative is beneficial during the race to track progress and see if adjustments should be made during the race. Summative is best at the end of the race, to review performance, see how you did, & how to improve for the next race #engsschat#edchat#assessment

I totally agree! Have you utilized journals in your classroom? I wonder how often they should be utilized in order to be effective? #sschat#engsschat#CCED336
This reminds me of “saturation” in research, where there is consistent evidence over time in multiple forms. I think that can happen in the classroom, too. #engsschat#ElonEd
Do you use the tag feature in addition to the item analysis? Tags allow you to check specific standards/content areas by student (including over multiple assessments), by quiz, and/or by class. https://t.co/y7Tjjmchq1#engsschat#gradingcanbeeasy
A4) With my assignments as previously mentioned (online, self-paced, asynchronous) they are graded but on a 0 OR 10 - either they show evidence of learning or they do not. Ss make revisions until reach standard. #engsschat
I have. I try to start every class with a writing prompt. We come back to these prompts later in the class; sometimes they become important draft work for an argument essay, or the seeds of a narrative piece. Sometimes it's just for the student— and that's okay. #engsschat
A3: formative are quick checks through the lesson to guide whether you should move on or go back. Summative are formal and at the end of lesson, ch, or unit. I’d argue formative are more important bc they are your guide throughout so you don’t leave anyone behind. #engsschat
A4: I personally feel that sometimes F.A. Should be graded on a participatory level. I don’t want a student to shy away from saying if they do not understand a concept. #engsschat#sshat#edchat#ssvlpn
Absolutely. If a student has mastered something & demonstrated that repeatedly, use the prior knowledge to spur new learning & a foundation for deeper understanding of related events and issues In social studies, 1 event involves several others, multiple issues, people. #engsschat
A4- this may be a minority opinion, but I do grade my formative assessment on a major curve. I run into the problem of students putting down random multiple choice answers, so I need to do SOMETHING. #engsschat
A4: I don’t think formative needs to be graded, however it can be. They can just be simple, quick checks more for gauging where they are at than for a grade. #engchat#engsschat#sschat#ssvpln
A4) I think it depends on the type of FA. A quick response bellringer check, maybe not but a writing response FA asking for a claim and evidence, yes. #engsschat
A4) With my assignments as previously mentioned (online, self-paced, asynchronous) they are graded but on a 0 OR 10 - either they show evidence of learning or they do not. Ss make revisions until reach standard. #engsschat
A3) [ Continued.....] Thanks! And then you have diagnostic assessment or pre-tests which are helpful before the race even begins to help determine what the best running strategy to start with and what you are working with! 🏁 #engsschat
A4) Often, formative assessment can provide a deeper peek into understand than we think. For some of my formative assignments, I do. Other, quick ones, I don't. They all drive comprehension however! #engsschat
A4: If a FA is going to be graded, it needs to be on effort (in my opinion). FAs are intended to be low stakes so a student can learn without being afraid to fail. As I tell my students, "intelligence is knowing what you don't know and doing something about it." #engsschat
A3: Here's a picture that we analyzed deeply in class. Who is the chef? Who is the Guest? What is the soup? Very interesting view on formative v. summative assessments!! #SSVPLN#engsschat#sschat
Yup! I’m looking forward to using it to track my data throughout the year. My SMART goal this year is to improve writing in my history class, so I should be able to track that across assessments with a tag, right? #engsschat
A4: as I turn more standards base, I have stopped grading my formative assessments. They are a step in the process for me which I don’t grade the steps #engsschat
A4: I think it depends on the setting. If you are walking around the room seeing how students are working on an activity, no. If they are doing a quick writing assignment, maybe #engsschat#ElonEd
A4. Our gradebook allows us to enter formative & summative grades, and formative grades don’t calculate into the Ss’ grades. So yes, some formative assignments get graded but “don't count”. #engsschat
A4: At times, it makes sense to grade formative assessment, so that students understand their progress, but not all formative assessment needs grading. Formative assessment can be useful for providing feedback and practicing skills, which does not need a grade. #engsschat
This can come down to philosophy, too. I agree that unfortunately, Ss sometimes need the grade as a carrot to participate. There are also other schools of thought that argue that grading FA inhibits risk. #engsschat
A4: I personally feel that sometimes F.A. Should be graded on a participatory level. I don’t want a student to shy away from saying if they do not understand a concept. #engsschat#sshat#edchat#ssvlpn
Formative assessment does not need to be graded. It is mainly for gathering information and for checking understanding. I think offering points for completion would be fine, but grading too strictly would turn it into summative assessment. #engsschat
I hope not to encourage failure! Only in some instances, maybe at the beginning or introduction of a unit should formative assessments be graded on a participation level. By the end of a unit is where the summative assessment should truly show if they’ve learned #engsschat#sshat
A4. I would say yes, but graded so they do not weigh too heavily. I think this would help encourage actively learning. I think I benefitted from this, and they helped make the students feel invested. #engsschat#sschat#ssvlpn
A4: a variety is in order - discussion based and written- written assessments are easier to grade. But I don’t think it should be a norm to grade formative assessments #edchat#engsschat#sschat
A4: Formative assessments can be graded, but they don't have to be. Sometimes you want them to be low stakes to get an honest understanding of where students are in the learning process #sschat#ssvpln#engsschat
A4: I don't believe every formative assessment should be graded. Many teachers at my school like to grade every single assignment. Sometimes, conferencing with a kid or quick feedback is better than a letter grade. #engsschat
A4: Most of my formative is not counted as a grade against Ss. It's either to check understanding and provide feedback or graded for completion/effort. #engsschat
Q4: Formative assessment should not be graded. These assessments are used to see where students are in their learning and gives the teacher opportunity to provide feedback to the students ##engsschat#engchat#sschat#ssvpln
A1: Formative assessment is any work, discussion, reflection, etc that checks knowledge and/or skills as well as practice of these skills or standards. It shouldn’t be graded but does need feedback #engsschat#hseduchat
A3: Here's a picture that we analyzed deeply in class. Who is the chef? Who is the Guest? What is the soup? Very interesting view on formative v. summative assessments!! #SSVPLN#engsschat#sschat
I am strongly in favor of student writing in class, but I avoid journals because they are not efficient. Takes too long to go through them all, and the feedback is too late. I prefer to collect writing on small pieces of paper daily so I can read and respond quickly. #engsschat
A5: I grade less formative assessment. My goal has shifted to showing students what they have learned and what they have not learned yet as opposed to providing points or a score. #engsschat
A4) I think it depends on the goals...Maybe for completion? #Formative assessments can be a good, low-risk way to let both the teacher and the student to check in about how learning is going. If the T gets immediate feedback- it's valuable for instruction adjustments. #engsschat
I think you may be misreading what I mean. Ss can attempt formative check without being afraid if they misunderstand it's a chance to grow, they can re-attempt to work on mastery. Hence the failure without fear. We want all Ss to learn/grow /master. #engsschat
A5: As a preservice teacher, I have only been in the field for two months and my viewpoint is still developing. Though, I do see the necessity in frequent checks for understanding. #engsschat#sshat#edchat#ssvlpn
A5: It's hard to change a culture where students are driven by grades (on assessments) and not by the joys of learning. I try to adjust this perception/attitude in my classroom but its incredibly difficult. That's why formative assessments are the best of both worlds. #engsschat
A4-The standard is the standard in my world. Formatives are like BP in baseball. They shouldn’t impact stats, but should provide feedback opportunities that improve performance to get better by game day. #engsschat
I collect journals every two weeks (or so), and I check that Ss have made an effort to complete every writing prompt during that 2-week session. Ss then put a post-it on one "best draft" for me to grade. This way I don't get bogged down in providing tons of feedback. #engsschat
A5: My attitude towards assessment has gone from "well, if i don't give points they won't do it" to "let's create something together and BUILD an assessment". More opportunities for inquiry, less "gimmie points" #engsschat
A5 Yes, I used to think that test/assessments/grades were some magical thing that had all these rules to be accurate. I now think most standardized tests are the least accurate measures of student learning and that classroom teachers are the best judges. #sschat#engsschat
A5) Yes. My idea of what constitutes a good test has changed. Additionally, I have utilized more formative assessments since learning their value. #engsschat
I see now! Yes, i’ve been practicing giving detailed feedback in my field placement. It’s good practice for grading for me, as well as helps students learn to write better! #engsschat#sshat#edchat#ssvlpn
I collect journals every two weeks (or so), and I check that Ss have made an effort to complete every writing prompt during that 2-week session. Ss then put a post-it on one "best draft" for me to grade. This way I don't get bogged down in providing tons of feedback. #engsschat
A2: questions, @GetKahoot reviews, @Socrative surveys and quizzes, reflections, writing prompts, etc. Reviewing kahoot responses as a class is a great mini lesson, individual conferences are great too #engsschat#hseduchat
A5: I used to think of assessment as something formal, official, and graded. But assessments can come in the form of more informal things, maybe even discussion or inquiry. Rather than a mode for points for our students they are a tool for us. #engchat#engsschat#sschat#ssvpln
A4: Rubrics are useful to students and teachers as they explain where a student lies in certain aspects and how they can improve within each rubric criteria. This way you don’t just stamp on a letter grade and provide no explanation #sschat#engsschat#CCED336
A5: I am an, ahem, “seasoned” preservice teacher so in my school days all we did was quizzes and tests. Formative assessments are so important. I like that there are different ways to check for understanding, in order to meet students where they are at #sschat#edchat#engsschat
A5: I’ve only been in the game 7 yrs and my view has changed drastically on assessment and grading over the years. Getting away from the traditional way and trying to find more ways to differentiate and give more choice. It’s something I look to my pln for guidance on #engsschat
I'm worried that grading formative assessments will create a culture of "grade junkies" or establish expectations that everything gets graded. If you're grading everything, you're grading nothing. #engsschat
A5- I’ve only been teaching for 5 yrs, so my view of assessment hasn’t changed. I do think I’ve gotten better at it, esp using tech to get “fresh data.” #engsschat
A5 I started grading the activities in my classes that looked like great learning. Using a writing process model helped with that. It changed the way I taught and graded. #sschat#engsschat
Hi #engchat#sschat#engsschat! Wanted to let you know about a FREE professional development webinar on Thurs 9/27 at 7:30pm Eastern.
"Fifty Nifty United States of Song: Appreciating Your State Through Music" - presented by @GoldenHawkCav. RSVP at https://t.co/NXbOCQ8PoP
A5: Yes my thoughts on F.A. have changed a lot! I started to realize that F.A. should be used more so for feedback and not just grades. I also used to think a quiz was the only type of F.A. I was so wrong! #engsschat#engchat#sschat
A4: Formatife shouldn’t be graded, but should have feedback. It’s a step in the learning process, yet Ss shouldn’t be penalized for not understanding it the first time #engsschat#hseduchat
Yes, indeed! This takes some additional set up (classes populated by student profiles, classes selected for the quiz, papers matched to students), so let us know if you need any help viewing your tag results: help@zipgrade.com #engsschat
I'm worried that grading formative assessments will create a culture of "grade junkies" or establish expectations that everything gets graded. If you're grading everything, you're grading nothing. #engsschat
A5: I've grown in the various ways I assess Ss. And having them create more to demonstrate understanding especially for summative. Plus teaching a cross-curricular course there are unique assessments in our course #geolit#engsschat
My concern is that there may be struggles and misconceptions in the journals that I don’t see for two weeks. The journals become less valuable as a tool for formative assessment, then. #engsschat
A5: I'm trying really hard to not grade things that only reflect a S's diligence or ability to follow directions. I'd like formative assessment (in a perfect world) to really be something that helps Ss see where they struggle/succeed, and helps me tailor instruction. #engsschat
A4: At times, it makes sense to grade formative assessment, so that students understand their progress, but not all formative assessment needs grading. Formative assessment can be useful for providing feedback and practicing skills, which does not need a grade. #engsschat
True, but this is only true if the journal is the only thing you're looking at. I have to assume we're participating in lots of other FA like questioning, conferencing, etc. while Ss simultaneously write in their journals. #engsschat
A6) That assessment gives us a snapshot of student learning at the time of the assessment and that assessment can take different forms. Assessment does not equal quiz/test. #engsschat
A6: I’ve noticed that oftentimes students are reluctant to do the little checks of understanding such as writing a 1-2 sentence position statement. I wish they understood the value, and that it’s not busy work! #engsschat#sshat#edchat#ssvlpn
A5. I would say I like assessments a lot more now that I understand their purpose. Knowing their either stepping stones towards enduring knowledge or tests on what is retained is a great thing to know, especially to measure growth. #engsschat#sschat#ssvpln
A4: At times, it makes sense to grade formative assessment, so that students understand their progress, but not all formative assessment needs grading. Formative assessment can be useful for providing feedback and practicing skills, which does not need a grade. #engsschat
A6: A bad grade on a test doesn't mean you're bad at the class. It means something went wrong in the learning process and we need to work together to figure it out and fix it. No one is expected to be perfect. #engsschat
A4: Ss are more than their grades and we should encourage continuous learning. Ss should be able to revise often cause learning shouldn’t stop with a test or final #engsschat#hseduchat
A6: the purpose of assessments is not to get a “goodl grade, it should always be about what you learned AND not all assessments look the same ! #edchat#engsschat#sschat
A6: I want my students to know that an assessment isn’t necessarily my judgement of them, but of how we are understanding each other. We are a team and we have to work together to get them to where they need and want to be. #engchat#engsschat#sschat#ssvplb
A6: I’ve noticed that oftentimes students are reluctant to do the little checks of understanding such as writing a 1-2 sentence position statement. I wish they understood the value, and that it’s not busy work! #engsschat#sshat#edchat#ssvlpn
Definitely. Also, when I started teaching 10+ years ago, my assessment philosophy was probably closer to "You give the test because you're done with the unit," where as now, I think Ts are much more assessment literate. #engsschat
A6) I wish they would understand the value of ungraded assessment and that they would utilize feedback to their own advantage. Students are often so focused on letter grades that they lose sight of what they are learning and its applications in everyday life. #engsschat
The level of questioning may help. Quick recall questions are not challenging but a higher level question that challenges them may help them see the value. #engsschat
Thanks, it takes so much stress away from Ss, and it does show their progress. Amazingly, many Ss ask to revise formative work, because they know it ultimately helps with summative learning. #engsschat#hseduchat
And also what type of writing is going on in the journal. If it's the main way you evaluate content understanding, this would be an issue. If it's a place for Ss to work through ideas/reflect/etc. less frequent feedback is feasible #engsschat
In reply to
@MrKrapels, @scomorrison, @StrelowHannah
What if they already know it? A teacher asking a kid to write a couple of sentences to verify something they already know could be interpreted as busy work from the student perspective. #engsschat
Absolutely. So many times, we have Ss write and then by the time they receive any feedback, that assignment has come and gone. Tough to do, for sure. #engsschat
Being sure that the students use this work in a future lesson. Then they see its value for themselves and not just something they think we look at and then it sits in a pile somewhere. #engsschat
This was awesome! As I said, first chat as a pre-service teacher. It’s nice to see how quickly I could get advice/input from experienced educators on important topics. Thank you! #engsschat#sshat#edchat#ssvlpn
A6: I wish students and parents understood the process of learning and that a retake or Do-over is not a punishment just a necessary step in the process. Most parents understand this, but very few Ss get it. #engsschat
A6: it's a communication tool that indicates who you are as a student at a precise moment in time. Efforts to master content should continue despite the unit coming to an "end". Learning is a process that doesn't fit nicely into arbitrary timetables like a unit. #sschat
I see what you’re saying, a higher level of Blooms! I couldn’t get some of my students to write a position statement on a controversial topic this past week, they wanted to say “I see both sides” I said go with which one you could provide stronger evidence! #engsschat#sshat
A5: I'm trying really hard to not grade things that only reflect a S's diligence or ability to follow directions. I'd like formative assessment (in a perfect world) to really be something that helps Ss see where they struggle/succeed, and helps me tailor instruction. #engsschat
A7: Love all the formative assessment tools available online. So many different ways to engage Ss with the content! @quizlet, @kahoot, @gimkit, etc. #engsschat
A6. I wish student knew assessments weren’t busy work, but rather our active interest in their learning. Hopefully when I begin teaching I can explain this from the get-go so students are not resistant or overwhelmed. #engsschat#sschat#ssvpln
A6: Simply put...assessment is not a scary word. Also, assessment does not mean quiz, test, benchmark, etc. At times I assess the kids by tossing things around the room🤷🏽
#engsschat
A5 - When I first started, assessments were just the end result of content;now I realize that assessments, like everything else, are part of the relationships between students & teachers. We have to know our Ss;if we can't know what they've learned, how can we teach them? #engsschat
Yes! Progress is more important that grades! A student should always be proud of the progress they have made and parents should be as well! #sschat#engsschat#CCED336
A7 Assess what is important to you. Look at your goals for student learning and ask, "how can I find out if they have learned this?". #sschat#engsschat
A7: I try to use a variety of ways to do formative assessments so my Ss don't realize I'm evaluating them, they just think they are playing a game. I like to tell my Ss who are nervous about an exam to just look at it like they're playing #Jeopardy! #engsschat
A7: looking more for advice here, but I’d share that when making formative assesssment fun students don’t think about the grade and you get maximum effort. #engsschat
I also think about the couple of "reflection pieces" ... i am tasked to do following a PD session ... couple of sentences verifying I learned something and how I will use it ... I rarely do them because I find them to be a waste of my time. #engsschat
A7 (Pt 2): Also, many students appreciate written feedback on formative assessment. They recognize that you care enough to take the time to do that and they will respect you and work for you. #engsschat
A7: As a pre-service teacher I'm very interested in hearing creative ideas for formative assessments. One of my favorites is "Show Me". Let me know your thoughts! #SSVPLN#engsschat#sschat
Q7: @Socrative , @quizizz , @GetKahoot and Google Forms are great tools to collect formative assessment data. But I also love incorporating #RetrievalPractice throughout units in addition to formative and summative assessment. #engsschat
A7: Like others said, there are TONS of formative assessments online. Just don't be afraid to try new things with your kiddos!! Think outside of the box!
#engsschat
A7) @Edulastic is a free and powerful tool for teachers looking to give digital assessment. It provides immediate feedback and standards-tied questions. #engsschat
A7: Don't just make your formative assessment about the content. Ask the kids HOW they are. How a student is acting can affect their comprehension and what they've remembered. A bad day can change what a kid remembers from school #engsschat
A1: Formative assessment is anything that allows us to evaluate our students’ learning - ticket out the door, discussion, quiz, quick write, etc. It can come in any form and be graded or non-graded. #engsschat
A7: I’m steadily learning what works best for my students. I’ve noticed to ask questions in any assessment that couldn’t be answered with a simple yes/no. Quick, deeper thinking. #engsschat#sschat#ssvpln
A7: The thing is I don’t have any... that’s why I’m here, to mooch off all these amazing teachers. In all seriousness though @C3Teachers is a great resource! Along with a text called “Management in the Active Classroom” #sschat#engchat#engsschat#ssvpln
That's so funny b/c exactly that type of reflection question is a part of each lesson in my online world history course. It really helps me see if they have an idea how they would apply skill and/or content from the lesson to life outside the course. :) #engsschat
A2: I commonly use informal discussions to review content & get an overall idea of how students are doing. I also use quick writes regularly, taking several student samples to review w/ the entire class & discuss “glows and grows” for each. #engsschat
A7. This might not be very creative, but I think this is a good resource for find strategies from which you can then develop Formative Assessments. #engsschat#sschat#ssvpln
You had me at "So what?" One of my favorite questions and one I encourage Ss to ask - in terms of thinking about whether what we're learning is important/useful (not in a totally snarky way). #engsschat
The beauty of history is that there’s a way to learn from it and connect it to today! Students could really benefit from practicing making these connections. #engsschat
My Ss write marking period reflection pieces where they set new goals going forward, & reflect on areas where they've struggled. For many, this is a favorite assignment, & I suspect it is because they can do something with it. Often, PD "reflection" is canned or phony. #engsschat
Agree on the portfolio. We've designed an interdisciplinary portfolio for our 7th graders. A lot of the reflection though will happen at the end. Trying to come up with small ways to integrate this more frequently this throughout the year. #engsschat
A7: Don't just make your formative assessment about the content. Ask the kids HOW they are. How a student is acting can affect their comprehension and what they've remembered. A bad day can change what a kid remembers from school #engsschat
