It’s time right?! Hi #waledchat! Marisa Thompson, HS ELA, Carlsbad CA! I am multitasking right now and looking forward to some inspiration from all of you while I prep for Saturday! Three presentations at #SDCUE!
Good evening from chilly, soggy Indiana. 1st time using this hashtag after learning what it meant! I work for a middle level organization IMLEA #waledchat
A1: Biggest win from the past month was the increase in student-to-student teaching in my classroom. I encourage them to take those opportunities as often as possible, and they're doing it without prompting more and more! #waledchat
A1: My Ss LOVED my Westward Expansion Twitter Chat PBA that I gave them this year. They were originally skeptical, but once it started they were so engaged! #waledchat@ERobbPrincipal@KTuttleEDU
A1: Working w/ a little who has some behavior concerns. I created a plan have stuck to the plan, she is growing the plan is working. 3 times this month she came to me to help her instead of just running around the building. BIG win for everyone! #waledchat
A1: For the last 2 units, I have given my one class projects instead of tests. They are much less stressed, they perform much better, and they actually get to see where the concept is meaningful! #waledchat
A1: My biggest win was receiving a note from a parent saying that they appreciate me. I always try to go out of my way to help my kiddos, and I feel like I put a lot of pressure on myself because I want to be perfect. I learned that I need a break too. #waledchat
A1 My biggest personal win was presenting on #inquiry#PBL at a new conference. Biggest kid win was yesterday, in fact, when one of my classes spontaneously erupted with activism to help others in need, having been inspired by our novel #ALongWalkToWater#waledchat
A1- Surviving turning 30....haha. Biggest win this month and it sounds minor...but had multiple kids check out book that are reluctant readers from our classroom library. #waledchat
A1: When I finished my read aloud and the Ss were begging for a sequel that doesn't exist. So many opportunities to explore with their excitement. #waledchat
I love projects so much more than traditional tests (until you have to grade them LOL). Ss are able to be so creative and they are so much more engaging than compliant! #waledchat
A1: Biggest win is getting a panel approved and ready for my school's edcamp tomorrow. I'm leading an open discussion with 2 other educators on diversity and representation and how to best serve our students. I'm nervous, but so excited! #waledchat
A1 biggest win is slowly incorporating new tech into my lessons. My 7th graders are amazing and are down for anything. This week we used @theClassroomQ and @gimkit and we had a blast! #waledchat
A1: We've started a weekly staff newsletter every week using S'more & it's been a great success, with the favorite part being the Twitter screenshots from our #btstigers, where so many teachers are sharing their learning everyday. They are doing amazing things!!! #waledchat
A1: Aside from finding a great S leader in my more challenging block who is great at helping me manage the class, I started making a list of blog posts that I plan to write over the next 2 months! #waledchat
A1:
This is more of a student win, but it made me super happy: I have a S with selective mutism. And last Thursday—she started talking to me!! She started talking to her hr teacher a week prior, but I was still thrilled. Her voice is beautiful! #waledchat
A1: So many wins this past month! One that stands out/one I was super proud of was kicking off our writers workshop. My K students were so engaged/motivated as they started their journal writing! No tears, fears or “I can’t write” among any! Major win! #waledchat
A1: successfully implemented stations, assessed, reassessed ss,kept up with my weekly updates to parents, wore 2 #tshirttuesday, did a @Goosechase, did the hokey pokey as pink dinosaur, played tunes, had awesome convos with staff and ss, and did some awesome projects #waledchat
A1 TWO: Sharing teacher-less SLCs with @TobiaBrooke at #FallNapa! I’m having a blast with my classes but that was a new experience & Im excited for all the students at different schools who will benefit! Oh!! AND got amazing insights from 3 days at High Tech High! #waledchat
A1. Watching people on our team take on new roles as leaders in the building. Watching people do great things to make our school better each day. I’m enjoying that we have incorporated the positivity project. @PosProject. #waledchat#otherpeoplematter
I actually prefer grading projects too! I feel like I get to know the students through examining their work, instead of stressing over whether they put the negative sign and how many points to take off for a given mistake #waledchat
A1: My biggest win from last month was seeing my Ss coming in first place on the global leaderboard on @thisislanguage and seeing how excited they were to know they were the top performing class in the world. Definitely a motivator! #waledchat
A1: It was a win , when I started implementing an idea from @BarbaraGruener. Three days a week, we celeoone student for an “I love (child’s name)” day. It’s been a huge success! #waledchat
A1: the biggest win from the past month was seeing Ss start to understand the routine of building their digital portfolio throughout a unit. When I start to think it will never work and begin to lose my mind, they started helping each other and understand the routine #waledchat
A2: Took a celebration tour going around to people in the building who I went to concerned about how it would turn out, and shared about how well it went this year! #waledchat
A1: Well, my Ss got a personalized Twitter shout out from @LibnOfCongress because of their work on @Crowd_LOC, AND I got them excited about transcribing primary source docs, so that’s a pretty solid double win! #waledchat
In reply to
@MrPStrunk, @LibnOfCongress, @Crowd_LOC
A1: Biggest win this past month was a young lady who unexpectedly shared the positive impact she felt I had on her during some rough times in school #waledchat
A2: The note made me realize that I do make a difference. At times, I forget that because teaching can sometimes be a thankless profession. I love my career and would not change it for the world, but it is nice to hear that I am on the right track. #waledchat
A2: I took 5 minutes at the end of class and pointed out specific things I saw throughout the class period - Ss helping each other, adding images, adding their creations to the portfolio. It was nice to see. #waledchat
A1 I found out that I will be teaching a technology class to future middle and high school teachers at @myrwu. I’m very excited to work with the next generation of teachers. #waledchat
A1~
biggest win for us has been the structures and protocols in place for our classroom community bldg. lessons~ intentional, purposeful daily time for has shown big rewards & positive relationship bloom ❤️
#waledchat
A1: Group Research approved for presentation at SLU symposium; Discussions and collaboration with @AndreaHonigsfel that fed my brain and soul!! #waledchat
A1. We've been working on getting new books in our library out for our Ss to read! They are extremely excited to dive into them, and can't wait to grab the new books! #waledchat
A2: The little got a positive referal from me. We had high fives, hugs and BIG smiles. I told absolutelty everyone I came into contact how much the little has grown and how well she is doing. #waledchat
A2 I have had a secret plan all along to have students take on a cause to champion (based on the #SDGS - sustainable development goals), so next up is helping kids figure out who to help and how to help. Celebrating for us means being #ChangeAgents! #waledchat
A2: We celebrated the win by having a great, happy day of class instead of the anciety of getting the grade, followed by the boredom of going over problems and the stress of doing test corrections... They actually got it and we could just move on! #waledchat
A1: I survived & absolutely enjoyed a new challenge - the first month of my new tech integration position & I got a 3.97 on a leadership stats paper whooooooooo hooooooo!!! 😁 #waledchat
A2: we celebrated as a class by sharing our first journal entries!! & I shared the excitement with others / I am reflecting on how I can keep the writing momentum going ✏️#waledchat
A2: Celebrated by coding research with SLU peers. Enjoying my collaboration was celebration. I received a lot of powerful insights that were needed for relationship building for new collaborative endeavors #waledchat
A2: I celebrate by sharing in the joy with my students, as I watch in awe of kindness doing what it does best, impacting hearts & lifting spirits! #waledchat
A2: Students did extra credit projects. One painted a scene from a summer reading book that I tweeted to the author, who kindly responded. The projects made my school’s monthly newsletter... #waledchat
Do not underestimate how much "I appreciate you" means. A former professor emailed me that she appreciates me, and it brought tears to my eyes. #waledchat
A3: It's been a good month.....I hate to say that, because then I feel like the other shoe will drop! Professionally, good. Personally, definitely had some struggles - physical, mental, emotional. #waledchat
A3: The TED Talks I had my Cougar Focus English Class work on for two months did not meet my expectations. I was really disappointed at the number of Ss who did not use time well and really in me for not setting clearer expectations. :( #waledchat
A3: Had a volunteer walk out on our Drama program. Left our leadership team in a difficult spot, but we will just have to hustle a little harder to get the win. #waledchat
A3: Sleep. Took on too much and it affected me in multiple ways. I’m learning I cannot help others if I do not care for myself, first. I felt defeated by myself. #waledchat
A3: As a 1st year teacher, I have had a few rough days, but I reflect and try again. Not every day is perfect, but I am learning so much. I am keeping a record of things that I should have done differently and tried to change a few things already. #waledchat
A2 I began putting together ideas for topics to include in the syllabus. Collaborating with a colleague who I hadn’t seen in a long time. Great to reconnect. #waledchat
A3: Im noticing that all the grownups in the building are more stressed/isolated/negative than I remember us being last year. I still love my students but it definitely changes how I feel walking into the building each day and it's sad to realize #waledchat
A3 Not sure > Expecting negative feedback about something I did recently, so I consider that casualty (not just a loss). I'm wracked w/ non-specified guilt & general anxiety until I find out what the situation is. I have a very active imagination, so I'm a basket case! #waledchat
A3: A project I designed with a colleague for my Ss and our partner school presented some unexpected challenges and we weren’t able to complete it as I had hoped. #waledchat
A3: I lost a sense of purpose about a month ago, which lead to lack of motivation and deep sense of inner struggle. I got my groove back, and I feel like nothing can stop me! #waledchat
A3: I have a couple of Ss that I felt I had built strong connections with that have not been meeting the basics. The recent incident has led to a huge divide between the home and school. Struggling with rebuilding. #waledchat
A3: A loss this past month was not being able to fully implement repeated reading with everyone who needs it. On our way, but not fully there yet. #waledchat
A2: I try to post frequently so others can see tweeting is something you can learn rather easily. Plus, I have joined a few ed chats to expand my plc to beyond my school. #waledchat
A3: I had Ss create memes from the perspective of a loyalist and patriot. Today a student asked me if we were going to finish them. They did the memes at the beginning of........last week. I completely forgot and I felt disorganized. #waledchat
A3: We have a little in 1st grade that continues to really struggle with seperation anxiety from mom. She is having a really rough go. I was able to help her, now I'm not any help either. #waledchat
A3- I had an activity bomb that I tried for the first time....also had some kids not meet their goals for the first 8 week...they fail I fail...new month #waledchat
A1 — receiving a a parent email saying “thank YOU for inspiring our son”. It made my teacher heart so happy knowing that I truly am making a difference. #waledchat
A3~
~ the realization that my bff teacher pal @_mlb25 was really staying place in her new school & we wouldn’t be teaching together this year ❤️
#waledchat
A3: As much as it breaks my heart, my family. I can't physically do school and home. My ss get the best of me, and I have nothing left for home. It will be 7 weeks and I am still not walking. You know it's bad when PT is bringing the surgeon out at next PT visit. #waledchat
A3:
My loss is hard to explain. I have several classes w students that do not reallywant to take drama. It is hard planning, management, building community, etc when the Ss purposefully derail class. 2 weeks ago, I decided maybe I need to look into other career options.#waledchat
A3: My loss has been sleep and worry as the first quarter came to an end. I struggled with remembering the important part - that THIS IS ABOUT MY AWESOME KIDDOS and am gaining my way back day by day. #waledchat
A4: Spent some time and explained my disappointment with the Ss and had them reflect on it too. I asked them in the reflection "Where do we go from here?" and got a great idea of them cowriting stories. They are sending story proposals to the publisher (me) this week! #waledchat
A4: Just keep focusing on self-care. Really looking forward to reconnecting with my buddy @_on11 tomorrow night as we watch our former students crush it on stage in Chicago at @OLCHSNews! #waledchat
A1 I got to spend so much time doing fun activities and getting to know my first graders more. Our Halloween party yesterday really helped their personalities shine through #waledchat
Wins and losses in education is a constant. There will always be those amazing moments, along with tough ones. My advice is always focus on the many great ones and reflect on those ones that don’t go as planned. Avoid picking one bad one and allowing that to drain you #waledchat
A4: We will savor the extra time we get to spend with our Stage Crew members. Will be an excellent opportunity to foster relationships with some of the people in our productions that fly under the radar. #waledchat
A2. Just letting people know that their work is appreciated. It was their win and in doing so a win for our school. It’s great to see others shine! #waledchat
A4: I'm trying to take some feedback and be more positive and build stronger relationships with more colleagues. Most importantly, I'm focusing on those that make me proud to be their coworker and make me love coming to school every day. Hoping things turn around! #waledchat
A3: I had a lot of tough moments over the last month; lessons that fell short/ones I did not deliver effectively, & struggles with classroom management/deciding when to “pick the battles” or let things go to keep a happy flow. #waledchat
A4. One of my mentors use to say with every negative there is a positive, I always look for the positive. Learn from it, make adjustments and move forward #WaledChat
A4: Turning that loss into a win by not giving up! As hard as it is to carve out the class time, I know it will be very beneficial for my struggling readers. #NeverGiveUp#waledchat
A4: Today, I made it my intention to ignore the silly stuff and throw myself 100% into talking, conversing, and being there for my 80-some 7th graders. They did a goal-setting survey and the positive feedback they provided was so helpful to me. #waledchat
A4 - One the best and most important ways to improve is simple reflection of practice, self and the situation. Too often we blame ourselves, when there isn’t blame. If I make a mistake, I try not to again. #waledchat
I found a #Hyperdoc on TED-like Talks that I am retooling as a response to literature presentation. I overcomplicate things, so we shall see what becomes of this idea. #waledchat
This is a true struggle for Ts at times & ur honesty should be commended. Others can gain SO much when we can share failures/loss. Often times it's better than sharing our wins. It humanizes us. #waledchat I'm glad "Stella got her groove back!"
A4:I’ll turn it into a win by going back and looking at their work, printing the memes (because they make me laugh) and acknowledging their creations. #waledchat
A4: I need to not be trying to fit so much fun into my life, especially on the weekends. I also need to sit down at school sometimes and give my kids attention. I actualy sat at my front desk today as they took a test. I also need to say no to some things at school. #waledchat
A4: I’m really not certain... I think intrinsic motivation is something one must discover for themselves... I teach jrs & srs & I think you just gotta do what ya gotta do... #waledchat
A4: I reflected on what didn’t go as planned and have found a solution, so the Ss won’t have to redo all their films. I told the Ss this was a new project, so it is a learning experience for all of us. They were understanding and excited to continue the project. #waledchat
A4 I already did. I had to take some time to meditate one morning. Let go of what was out of my hands, prioritize what was in my control, then just started having fun again. It's been a great few weeks...again! #waledchat
A4 Have to keep trying to do better. Seeing the smiling faces of my first graders, their hugs and their excitement can help me forget all the losses while I am around them. #waledchat
A4: Really don't know how to help the little with her seperation anxiety issues. However, working to support the other students to not get stressed also. #waledchat
A4: I know that I will do better at taking care of myself so I do not burn out. This is a win because it means I will be healthy and more effective for everyone around me. #waledchat
A4: I realized that for as many things as I have no control, I have 10 things within my control. It’s all about focusing on the right things! Now I feel unstoppable! #waledchat
A4- Going to use the data I got this past month from losses and turn it around. Going to chat with some of the students other teachers and come up with a plan to reach the kids. #waledchat
A4: Every day is a new day to make a difference. Yes, some days are hard, but I want to be like @AllysonApsey, @StantonAlana, @MrsHankinsClass, and the other educators who lead from the heart. I reflect, and I am honest with myself when things are not going well. #waledchat
A4: Doors always open. Paths emerge. There’s much to be done for our students. 1. I’m not finished with my EdD, perhaps they will change their mind. 2. I’ve been through far worse than this. So, I’ll do what’s best for students- any and all of them 💕 #waledchat
A5: Along with enjoying the show tomorrow night, I'll be walking a 5K for my mom's school on Saturday with my son in tow in the stroller, which I'm really looking forward to! Can't run quite yet after my injury, but this is a start. #waledchat
A4: reflect, learn and improve. also talk to others when I’m uncertain. As long as I’m learning from the losses, it could be a win. Also, I try to focus on the positive-if a lesson fell short; what DID go well. Are my kids happy? Most important. #waledchat
A5: This sounds silly, but @Starbucks holiday drink menu starts tomorrow, so I am treating myself to a cup of coffee. I plan on relaxing and grading papers. #waledchat
A4 1st inner temper tantrum, then calm down, then reflect so I don’t make same mistake again. Whatever went wrong, I need to learn from the loss & the criticism/feedback that comes along w/ it. Ultimately a loss is a learning opportunity. I expect the same for students #waledchat
A4~
~ put more effort into belief in myself & the great work we are doing for kids & keep at it ... simply put @_mlb25 was my biggest cheerleader daily in the classroom & her years of wisdom will stay with me forever ...now it’s my turn to do something with such ❤️
#waledchat
A5: Mother-in-law coming into town, so I will try to stay off the radar. Tomorrow night, @megan_hacholski and I are going out to celebrate our former Drama students in their performance of Chicago. #waledchat
A4:
I’m still workingon that.
I had real talks w students; reviewed procedures, rules, social contracts. Asked Ss how to make class better. Trying to focus on positives. #waledchat
You can have ur struggling readers use FREE apps like Prizmo Go so they can independently read text just by a quick snap of the camera. Then they can read however many times as they need. #waledchathttps://t.co/9MetaYqJPc
A5:
My sister and I are taking my niece, a budding thespian, to see Little Shop of Horrors. Her drama class checked out Audrey II, and Emmy can’t wait to see her in action. #waledchat
