A1. To me, it is Ss taking control of their learning.
A1 Ss are accountable for jobs in the classroom/school
A1) Giving students ownership in their decision making, and voice in their learning
A1-Ss training other Ss how to use new tech, trouble shooting during projects, preparing classroom for the next day
A1: Student leadership in the room can range for topic "experts" to job holders responsible for integral tasks during your day
A1 Ss are solving their own problems
A1: Whenever you create, share! Whenever you learn, teach! (That's my motto for digital leadership, for sure!)
Agreed, I like when my classroom can run smoothly without me having to do everything!
A1: At the ES it's taking care of the room, at the MS it's taking care of the school, at the HS it's taking care of the community.
A1: at 6-8 in Cheney, Ss can run for and participate in STUCO, but that can limit to just kids who run and win S elections
same here! Each S has a job in my room...and each job is VERY important
A1: independent, problem solvers, responsible, role models
A1 Ss helping others solve their problems
A1: Allowing Ss to control their learning w/guidance from T's!
A1: Ts need to remember that any student or young person can become a leader.! That is the first step.
I'm late! But I'll catch up!
A1: students being advocates and lead learners in & out of the classroom. Getting away from teacher directed to student led
A1: in 1st grade, it's Ss having jobs, taking responsibility for our room, teaching each other, helping each other&subs, sharing,
A1I just watched a blab about this last week by Jen Jones and Erin Klein. Letting go of traditional student teacher roles is key
A1: It can take on a variety of forms. There are obv ones like STUCO, club officer, etc as well as not-so-obvious ones,
A1: we also have a S ambassador program where Ss help w/ different activities, P/T conf, and are paired w/ new Ss to guide them
this is something we are working on...how to help without being bossy!
A1b: ...like leading quietly in the classroom, tutoring others, making sure no one is left out, etc.
A1: it's important to get Ss thinking beyond them whether that be at the classroom, school or even community level. Even in K-2
And the benefit of Ss taking control is that it frees you up to help others!
A1: I love to involve Ss in discussion of what we do in class, give them a voice. So important
I think we all agree that students can't develop leadership unless the teachers let go of some control.
Don't be shy! Introduce yourself! : )
I love seeing my firsties be leaders in our classroom by helping others.
One of our Ts will select Ss to pre-teach them a new tech program so they help answer ?s from other Ss. I love that!
What an authentic skill for Ss to learn!
. Look at the research by Kouzes and Posner on student leadership!
and inspire student leadership. T becomes the mentor rather than gatekeeper of knowledge.
So true! My goal is to have Ss running the room. I step in and guide (or instruct) when and where needed https://t.co/ikg3hM2Nwy
I think we all agree that students can't develop leadership unless the teachers let go of some control.
Kerry 3-5 building counselor Fort Scott
Agree. We are doing Minecraft projects and the Ss all help each other. I spend most of the time observing and smiling.
A2: These kiddos are our future! We must guide them in leadership so they can develop their skills and be successful.
A2. Helping build leadership skills now will help with their leadership skills in the future.
a common misconception is that Ss want to get out of work. That's not true! They want meaningful ed and have good ideas
A2: So students can see leaders that are from their own audience. It makes it more meaningful. https://t.co/qhDsCeSYeS
A2 ....took the words right out of my mouth! I couldn't agree more https://t.co/T0uxN07R0i
A2: These kiddos are our future! We must guide them in leadership so they can develop their skills and be successful.
A2: leadership builds skills in collaboration, problem solving, and future skills
A2: Student Leadership develops a drive to engage in making the world a better place through soft skills and academics.
A1 it sounds silly but I just recently gave up passing out folders at the end of the day, new teacher helper task.So nice!
A2: It teaches Ss to have confidence in themselves. It also prepares them for the world outside - they will lead in some way.
Did that when we learned about green screen&podcasting.Ss were great.I found myself going to them as well. https://t.co/Nn5ONGtR35
One of our Ts will select Ss to pre-teach them a new tech program so they help answer ?s from other Ss. I love that!
School provides both situations and context that closely resemble real life social/work situations. https://t.co/AZgWyFxoOX
Well-constructed leadership experiences can offer a vehicle for powerful learning related to leadership development.
A2) Exposes them to skills they will need in the real-world, we always need leaders. Builds confidence.
Agreed! https://t.co/MpW2Jn67dt
A2) Exposes them to skills they will need in the real-world, we always need leaders. Builds confidence.
A2: have to give all Ss the chance to develop leadership skills, can't just be the natural leaders who like to be involved.
A2: Ownership-helps the school overall, and leadership is one of the most important concepts T's can encourage!
A2-How better to learn responsibility than to be a responsible leader?
A2: making Ss leaders says we are in this together
A2 The world is looking for leaders that will create change. We need to empower students with the skills to create that change!
Yes! Confidence! So important for our youth!
Or just the ones who have parents that will push them into activities or can afford extracurriculars https://t.co/siWR8KIl1f
A2: have to give all Ss the chance to develop leadership skills, can't just be the natural leaders who like to be involved.
Fantastic answers tonight!
It's easy for kids to look and relate to other students. Found one student leads and many follow the example
A2: We are preparing Ss for the real world, leadership is a life long skill. Student leadership enhances learning for all
A2: Supporting Ss in developing leadership skills will support themin the K-12 experience and beyond!
Well said! https://t.co/0UmKByeACx
A2: We are preparing Ss for the real world, leadership is a life long skill. Student leadership enhances learning for all
spoke to this today to telecommunication leaders today. We need to get out of their way and mentor them.
A2: Taking on responsibilities allows choice for Ss and sometimes creates mistakes! Isn't that a great thing when that happens?
Yes!!! So important for their future. Needs to start early and build!
Those learning opportunities make us stronger! https://t.co/A4xhyAGgrI
A2: Taking on responsibilities allows choice for Ss and sometimes creates mistakes! Isn't that a great thing when that happens?
practiced better & effective civic leadership as a hs soph. He helped build up & support his community.
Q3: by allowing the opportunities for Ss to LEAD! If a Ss can do it, let them!
spoke to this at the as living in a prototyping world. It leads to learning and engagement.
A3. Provide opportunities whenever we can. Tech leaders, group leaders, class jobs, etc.
A3 By giving Ss experiences they can learn from
A3: MODEL! MODEL! MODEL! Enough said!
A3: let go and let kids have a chance to build skills, model appropriate leadership, encourage kids to be leaders.
A3: Everyone class needs a common leadership language. If you haven't checked out , you need to. Amazing!
A3: intentional lessons, classroom set up, practice, practice.....modeling and expectations
A3: Let students take control in a real way that helps promote their skills. It's not just chaotic free-for-all, but measured.
A3: We must be role models and teach them HOW to lead - not everyone is a "born leader".
We have to model good leadership by getting a voice and stepping outside the box! Ss take notice when they see us!
A3: Use to meet the needs & interest of students & their learning styles. Make the learning process engaging.
A3: have Ss take a lead on the culture and climate of the school. What do they like, what do they want their school to be?
Agree. Also, keep giving second chances to those kiddos who aren't born leaders.
Yes, yes, yes! Mistakes are always good. A great opportunity to learn! https://t.co/5JaD671Y98
And learn from their mistakes as we do each day!
Leadership is about taking ownership. We have Ss wash tables at lunch. Any age can be allowed to start taking ownership.
A3: get Ss involved in the classrooms. Recognize and reward moments of leadership that was natural and not assigned by T
Yes, and 3rd, 4th, 5th... until the student has made the connection to learning. .
Nothing worse than going to a meeting and no one speaks up? So appreciate you
A3: Starts w/ adults recognizing need for a shift in "control" A partnership in learning w/ genuine relationships between Ss & T
This includes (as strange as it sounds) failure. Ss need to realize that it is okay, and often beneficial, to fail.
A3: We have school wide leadership roles. Green Team, Celebration Leader, Morning Greeters, Lunch Leaders, Hall Monitors, etc..
A3: Ss create classroom jobs together and then change jobs weekly. Gives them chances to test out different roles as leaders
Model what we r looking for-frequently! Some Ss only get to see it at school, only chance to find/learn/show leadership skills!
Just like adults need time to collaborate, so do children! https://t.co/SWpsXjFGcx
we need students to have the opportunity to collaborate, work in teams, create visions-
A3 Modeling it as an educator! Allowing students time to think through situations instead of just giving them the answer.
Absolutely!! I am constantly telling the kids that learning from mistakes is better than not trying.
Teachers work extremely hard, sometimes too hard. Let's give ownership to students in creating a great school culture!
A3: planning on expanding a lesson I do where Ss become senate and house to pass laws of room...will give them more ownership
A4: by rotating jobs and responsibilities, we all need a chance to lead and be lead. lessons in both
A4: Good Q! Give emerging leaders specific opportunities, encourage and reinforce with positive words, and model, model, model.
My right hand is freezing βοΈwhile my left hand is π but the way this is set up, I can't stop tweeting and put on gloves yet π
A4 Letting Ss do things they are good at and things they are bad at
A4. Providing many opportunities so they all have equal chances to lead. Encourage natural leaders to help your nonleaders grow.
A4: I think part of this is helping Ss to become good self-evaluators and to articulate/identify their special skills.
A4: I believe leaders need to play support roles 2, allowing other to lead. Making others better is a gr8 leadership quality.
A4:always room for more leaders! And it's important to teach those natural leaders boundaries and limitations, can't do EVERYTHING
A4: rotating roles w/in the team. Each Ss takes the turn as project leader.
Yes! I love your language about "special skills."
That's the difference between Peyton Manning and Cam Newton.
Q4: All Ss have different gifts they bring to our classrooms. Developing the leaders within each child will reflect those.
A4: partner share lets the born leaders shine THEN group sharing lets those emerging feel more confident https://t.co/zNWFCwPjsl
Yes! https://t.co/rP4GHGnlId
A4: I think part of this is helping Ss to become good self-evaluators and to articulate/identify their special skills.
Yes! My natural leaders love to help those in need! They just know how and when to step in! Even at 5 years old!
I completely agree! https://t.co/tOj3c5lvLM
A4: I believe leaders need to play support roles 2, allowing other to lead. Making others better is a gr8 leadership quality.
A4:Good one! It's easy to always go to the natural leaders, have to give others chance.Natural ones will find their way to roles!
I love stepping back and watching this happen. Happy teacher moment! https://t.co/xmzfV2r7Qe
Yes! My natural leaders love to help those in need! They just know how and when to step in! Even at 5 years old!
A4 allowing students to discover their strengths, providing specific roles in group work:supply manager, note taker, etc.
Hi ! How are you on this Monday? Good to see you at .
A4) Give chance for all to lead. Some you will have to coach, but put them in situations where they will succeed & feel encouraged
A4: lots of answers mentioned already. Provide a variety of ways Ss can lead - not everyone has the same strengths.
A5: To get more student leadership in the classroom, you must read Learn Like a Pirate by . Great stuff!
A5: We utilize older grades (4-6) as partner classes with (K-1) for iPad projects. Dig. citizenship and leadership skills for all!
loved it. You will learn how to let go and let the Ss lead their learning https://t.co/7x2cn7QcQ4
A5: To get more student leadership in the classroom, you must read Learn Like a Pirate by . Great stuff!
A5) & are both great resources for helping transform students into leaders. Seen many shine through both of these
A4: Learn like a Pirate is the best book ever for S jobs!
A5: If you get a chance to visit a school, DO! It will inspire you!
A5: Contact . He has some awesome student leadership ideas and programs.
A5 We are using the First Tee Core Values + Healthy Habits
Trying a genius hour model that allows students time to discover their passions and explore new ideas!
As does the process. The soft skill development is amazing!
I am going to a conference about Leader in Me this spring#
Curious as I check out for the night- any of your schools have a well functioning MakerSpace? I'd love to chat about it!
ooo love my Ss experts, makes them feel so good to be the expert
I agree! Even if you are unable to afford the program, you will walk away saying "Our school is capable of some of that!"
That's a great idea! Do you have lists posted?
Allow students to help design units. When did this, students' leadership skills really came alive with ideas
not yet π ideally I would or will. Right now we just discuss it. Students know who knows what π
Curious about The Leader in Me -- anyone in Central KS use this??
depending on the age of your Ss the final product could be a in TedTalk presentation format! Saw that at a conference
A5: I use lots of menus and choice boards to help empower and motivate. Love letting them take control of learning.
Wish me luck as I run my first Twitter chat next Monday on in service to show Ts how to get awesome ideas online! Night all!
Thank you all so much for another amazing ! I look forward to this every Monday! You are all fantastic!!
Did the Ted Talks last year. 8 and 9 year olds did so well and were so capable.
