Hello everyone and welcome to tonight's #P12Leaders Chat. We are excited to have @sheehyrw as our special guest as we discuss his new book #BeTheOne for Kids.
Ryan, Elementary Principal and author of #BeTheOne For Kids, honored to guest moderate tonights #P12Leaders chat. Looking forward to learning from all of you.
https://t.co/zV1xqKBimH#BeTheOne For Kids I talked about how everyone has the power, but we need to bring it with us everyday. What is the most important thing that you bring to your building everyday? #P12Leaders
A1. The most important thing that I bring everday is my kids first attitude. Making sure that everything that we are doing is centered around what our students need. My positive outlook hopefully is contagious and helps the building climate. #P12Leaders
A1: I bring belief in my students abilities to succeed. Every student can succeed but many have never had anyone believe in them. We have to believe in our students no matter how difficult they may seem to us or others. #p12leaders
Diane Elem Principal from Ct. A1: I have the power to keep a positive attitude, a smile, and a can-do must-do approach to our school everyday. #P12Leaders
A1: As my friend @awelcome says, we must leave all of our adult problems in the car. Walk into the building and give kids a positive attitude and a fresh start. #P12Leaders
A2. We must #BeTheOne to love our students like no teacher, administrator, etc has. This means that we choose to provide for our students, be the smiling face for our students, and always care for our students. #P12Leaders
A2. No matter the frustration or what is going on with a student at the moment, always champion the students and seek to strengthen relationships #p12leaders
A2: A Be the One mindset means you have the power to make a difference in the life of 1 or the lives of many each & everyday. It’s a privilege and a responsibility. It looks like love, patience, being present, and holding all to expectations of success. #P12Leaders
A2: We must we advocates for our students. Our students must know we are going to stand up for them both in front of them and behind the scenes. It also means investing in each other as a staff. We have to encourage each other when we are having difficult days. #p12leaders
A2 Our students come to us with all kinds of gaps. Academic, emotional, social, etc. We have to #betheone to stand in those gaps for our students setting high expectations and loving them when no one else does. #P12Leaders
A1: The most important thing I bring to our building... I BELIEVE! My belief in our Ts, in our Ss, the belief in the impact of how what we do today has on tomorrow. Oh, and I smile a lot. 🤗 #dealerinhope#BeTheOne#P12Leaders
https://t.co/zV1xqKBimH#BeTheOne For Kids I talked about how everyone has the power, but we need to bring it with us everyday. What is the most important thing that you bring to your building everyday? #P12Leaders
https://t.co/TlpZ8RhdHl do you ensure that everyone in your building has the #BeTheOne For Kids mindset and once they do, what does that do for the culture of your school? #P12Leaders
A3. I ensure others have that mindset by setting up opportunities for conversation and trying to keep the mood positive so everyone wants to go that extra mile to ensure kids are successful. #P12Leaders
A3 I believe, as others have said, the #BeTheOne mindset comes from the belief that our responsibility it to students first. When we do that as a school, having all work for children first, the results can be astounding. #P12Leaders
A3: It's about making a conscious effort to be present and make kids the priority. Make a habit out of calling kids by their name, making eye contact and being intentional about giving praise and encouragement. #P12Leaders
A3: lead by example, cultivate efficacy thru collaborative practices, and celebrate small wins often! When we believe they're all "our kids" we solidify a radically relational environment #P12Leaders
A2: It means that we remember that schools do not exist for adults to have jobs, they exist for the kids. We must NEVER forget that or let adult issues take our focus away from the kids. #P12Leaders
A3: I try to model the #betheone mindset. I show that I am there for the kids and that I will do whatever necessary, again, that is contagious. Walking the walk as an admin says a lot and teachers appreciate that! #P12Leaders
You’re crossing over here to Hattie work! Building collective teacher efficacy leads directly into student belief in themselves and their abilities. #P12Leaders
A2: It means to bring the passion & purpose that kids need. Every day. Remind each other of our shared WHY in both words and actions. Also bring lots of fun and humor. Gotta have that. It is having that magical mixture of love & high expectations. #BeTheOne#P12Leaders
A3: Lead by example! Students will gravitate towards those who they know truly care. Have healthy team communication at faculty and department meetings. Share what works and what doesn't work for you. We are constantly growing and learning. #p12leaders
A3: Practicing what you preach is most important. Then engaging all staff, regardless of job title, in ongoing conversations about what it takes to #bethone for our kiddos. #P12Leaders
A4. I have been lucky enough to have many different people make that difference in my life. Looking at leadership, my principal when I was a vp allowed me the free range to grow myself as a leader which gave me a safety net to try new things. #P12Leaders
A3: We have a shared WHY that we display but most importantly we live it every day. We talk about it daily and hold each other responsible, realizing that if we are going to be the best we can be for our kids, we will all need support along the way. #BeTheOne#P12Leaders
#P12Leaders Two guys I coached with at different schools. Jim Walker in Texas (now in Michigan) and Luke Houdek at USMilwaukee. Really put an emphasis on coaching the person more than the sport. Also that fundamentals mean a lot more than complex schemes. Simple stuff.
A4: All of the leaders I have worked with have helped to make me who I am. They have all showed me what to do, what not to do...how to do things, and how not to do things. The varied perspectives I’ve seen have helped me immeasurably #P12Leaders
A4: Too many to name. My father is a retired teacher, coach, principal and school superintendent. He was my hero growing up (still is) and the person that I turn to for advice on leadership and life. I try to #BeTheOne for others because of him. #P12Leaders
A4: There isn't just 1 person! Being connected to my PLN-Twitter, Voxer, EdCamps & local assoc push me to be a better leader each and every day. Too many to name, but I'm a better principal because of my tribe! #P12Leaders#principalsinaction#momsasprincipals#edcampli
A3(b): We also have a Leader-Leader culture and invest in the values & practices that seek out the greatness in each of us, celebrate those strengths & build each other up as leaders. #BeTheOne#P12Leaders
A4: Gordon Holbein, a management professor in college. He told his story of how his passion led him to being a college professor only after chasing a life as a banker. This led me to pursuing my passion. His story changed my course. We can not discount our stories. #p12leaders
Wow. What a hero and perfect role model for the life you have chosen. I love that you try to honor him by making sure your are #BeTheOne for others! #P12Leaders
A4: it's hard to pick just one, but probably a soccer coach of mine who believed in me when I didn't believe in myself. His belief carried me until I had the success I needed to believe in myself #P12Leaders
Q5.I try to be the educator that I needed when I was younger. How have you taken the experience of someone believing in you and transferred it to your school/classroom? How has that looked? #P12Leaders
A4: So many have helped move me along my path, both supporters and critics. Ultimately, I have to go back to my parents who dedicated their talents & passions to education & taught me the power of an educator who believes in & loves their Ss. #BeTheOne#P12Leaders
A5. I try to give my Ts and Ss the same free range in trying new things within a zone. Showing them that I believe in them goes along way in creating a culture where they want to try something new. #P12Leaders
This is so often the case. Kids don't believe in themselves at a time in their life when that is all they truly need. Someone that believes in them. #P12Leaders#BeTheOne
A5: There's a fine line between winning and losing and kids have a hard time with that. I always try to focus on effort and preparation and show unconditional love regardless of the final score. #BeTheOne that gives the hug after a tough loss! #P12Leaders
A4- It started with my My Dad who always pushed me to be my best at everything I do. As an administrator, people like @_AndyJacks@brewerhm@PrincipalFrench and my PLN’s push me to grow and push boundaries which benefit my students daily #P12Leaders
A5. I learned that if students don’t like you, they will not learn from you. We must show we care first. Learning comes after the trust and relationship is formed. #P12Leaders
A5: As a T, I told my Ss "I believe in you." I coached them, counseled them, pushed them to do things they originally told me "I can't do that." Today, as a principal, I do that for my Ts & continue to tell our Ss how much I know "You can!" #BeTheOne#P12Leaders
Trying to the best is where it starts. Whatever we choose to do, we must try to be the best. You have some great models of excellence there. #P12Leaders#BeTheOne
In reply to
@PrincipalKap, @_AndyJacks, @brewerhm, @PrincipalFrench
A5: I think just by trying to build relationships with the students in my building. If I can be one person who they know cares, then mission accomplished #P12Leaders
A5: I try to cultivate a culture and provide experiences for the Ss that I would have liked to learn in (and have my own kids learn in). Trust, love, student-centered, etc. #P12Leaders
A5- Have to lead by example, take risks and if failure or struggles occur, learn from it and move forward. Never accept or be satisfied with status quo. #P12Leaders#BeTheOne
A6. By never creating that gotcha moments and by showing/modeling that it is okay to FAIL. Never making those failures a secret. Own up, admit, and move on. #P12Leaders
A6. I communicate the expectations often and celebrate when we inch closer towards our goals. I solicit the help of parents and community when opportune to help reach the goals. #P12Leaders
A6: Building relationships takes time. Being there for and getting to know the adults as human beings, not just staff or parents, is a start. Our actions speak louder than our words. SHOW them we care #P12Leaders
A6: Sounds simple, but first I tell them. I high five, fist bump. let them know how much greatness I see in them. Then, listen to them to know their needs, be there to support, cheerlead when their is failure, celebrate the wins! #BeTheOne#P12Leaders
A6: When collaborating w/ Ts or parents, think how powerful the impact would be if the leaders said, " I am giving you this feedback because I believe in you." #P12Leaders
A6- Personal conversations that you have daily, which occurs when you are out of your office and in their classrooms. You can’t show someone you believe in them and you never see teach or speak to them. Get out of your office!#P12Leaders#BeTheOne
A6: I also love sharing their awesomeness outside of our school walls. We call that "Positive Gossip" at our school. Name & appreciate someone's strengths, then share it with the world! #BeTheOne#P12Leaders
Q7.#BeTheOne For Kids talks a lot about if every educator would unleash their power we could change education. If you could change one thing in education, what would you change and why? #P12Leaders
A7. I would want more flexibility in personell and making sure that we can use all our resources in a manner that is best for kids. Also Program that allows all educators to teach in different areas and types of school. Giving us all different perspectives. #P12Leaders
A7: Make school less structured. Fewer assessments, more #PBL. More student choice to determine curriculum so there is ownership and real authentic learning #P12Leaders
A7: added flexibility to structures, systems, spaces so that educators could facilitate the learning Ss want to engage in - more student driven, curious investigations #P12Leaders
A7. I would like for politicians to support teachers rather than giving the impression that our jobs are easy and they could do them better. Let’s get teachers in office! #P12Leaders
A7: Don't be afraid to be creative. I think accountability in education increases fear to do something outside the box. We have to make sure teachers are empowered and not feeling held back from exercising their passion. #P12Leaders
A7: So many changes that need to be made...why do we still separate kids by age and not ability? Why do we spend more time decorating for homecoming than exploring passions projects in the classroom? We ned change now more than ever! #P12Leaders
A7: Gosh, so much about the traditional institution of education screams status quo. When trying something new, it can be tiresome to deal with procedures, red tape & those who don't get it. I want to be in a community that answers a new idea w YES! #BeTheOne#P12Leaders
A7- If I could change one thing, I would eliminate standardized testing in Elementary. Millions of dollars are spent on testing which could instead be spent on making sure all students mental, social and academics needs are being met as a child. #P12Leaders#BeTheOne
