Hello! Lesa Haney, Austin. This week has been busy, but I am grateful to amazing colleagues who support and encourage me every step of the way. #3rdchat
Hello #3rdchat peeps. Edwin here. 3rd grade teacher in Philadelphia. It has been a while. Sorry it’s been a crazy couple of weeks. This is my GIf not just for this week but this year. What a rough start to this year. I have a tough crew this year and am losing hope 😢 #3rdchat
Q1: As human beings, we were many different “hats” that coordinate with our many different roles. What kind of hats do you wear most frequently? #3rdchat
Hang in there! I had a tough situation last week. I took it to my team and they had the perfect solution for me. Remember, you are not in this alone. We are glad you are here this evening! #3rdchat
A1: Referee, psychologist, but especially referee... The fights in my room this year are nuts. Doesn’t help it has been hot and nasty here in Philly. We have 5 early dismissals due to heat already. I also have many kids and small room. So many factors 😢 #3rdchat

I am an empty nester, but love rocking the grandma hat. Also enjoy the wife hat, friend hat, colleague hat, team leader hat, teacher hat, sister hat, and learner hat. #3rdchat
Mindfulness in the Classroom!
We've been using @MindYeti in our classroom each afternoon around 2:20 to calm ourselves & help us focus on the last lesson of the day. The kids are enjoying it & feel that it's helping!

A1: Like most, I wear many different hats: wife, sister, aunt, daughter, friend, and the most time-devoted one- teacher. I wouldn't have it any other way! #3rdchat
A1 Hats. Oh my. Person. Wife. Mother. Teacher. Friend. Daughter. Listener. Cook. Shopper. Helper. Motivator. Organizer. I have a lot more but we all know Twitter has a character limit right? Lol #3rdchat
My experience is to focus on social emotional learning. Hard core every day. I think those lessons are so tricky and take a looonnngggg time but worth it. #3rdchat
A2 I've never been very successful at finding this balance. This summer my son grew taller than me, I realized my time with him is fleeting. I've been working hard to leave school at school while still giving my class my all. 4 weeks in and I think I'm doing ok. #3rdchat
This is tough. I have a set "unplug" time every evening. I use Boomerang app to schedule emails. I also know that my to-do list never ends and that is okay. Putting first things first really helps. Still a work in progress. #3rdchat
A2: Balance is one of the most challenging aspects of teaching! I try to disconnect from work when I get home and make a point to be present for my family. It’s not easy- but I try. Seems like back to school time is the most difficult time to find balance! #3rdchat
A2: Have dinner with my family. Attend my kids’ events. Have a date night at the supermarket with my wife once a week. Nothing but the best for my girl! #3rdchat
A2: I’m really trying not to do stuff for school everyday afterwards. I used to do stuff for school everyday last year. I need to do better at balancing life and work. With my crew this year, my energy is really drained :-/ Sorry if I’m a bit of a downer today. #3rdchat
A2: It has taken me 10 or so years to figure it out, but I really feel like the balance is there this year. I have made a huge effort to leave school earlier each day (usually by 5 or so). At the end of the day I feel accomplished and happy. #3rdchat
A1: I love being a 3rd grade teacher and mom- those are my two favorite hats that I wear. I also coach gymnastics, competitive cheer, and high school cheer! #3rdchat
Not a downer at all! You’ve come to the right place for inspiration and to be lifted up. Teaching is hard! We are in this together. I’m glad you are here! #3rdchat
A2 The work pile will always be. I try to prioritize using a model I saw many years back. I revisit this regularly and set a time limit for work at home. #3rdchat
Me either- I become consumed with being the best teacher me sometimes- I’m trying to leave that at school as much as possible and give my babies as much of me as possible #3rdchat
Q3: Self care is taking care of the mind, body and soul. In the next three questions, we will unpack all three. What are some self care tips for taking care of your mind? #3rdchat

You might like to make 2+ good playlists for yourself. One+ motivational for the way to work and a de-stressing one+ for the way home. I like to have a few playlists on the ready. #3rdchat
A3: I love to listen to music, all day every day! I also love to lose track of time through reading. Practicing mindfulness is my other happy place. So great for your mind to unwind and be calm. #3rdchat
it was a little hard at first (I did it over a weekend)...but out of sight out of mind worked - instead I check my personal emails, window shop on Etsy, and getting into blogging
definitely try it - made me nervous too but - we give so much of ourselves during the day #3rdchat
A4: I wish I loved, or even liked, to exercise. I know that is so good for stress and balance. However, I try to just eat well and spend time with those that make me happy. #3rdchat
A4 Exercise. I’m all about counting steps because it’s an easy thing to measure. Food. I also pack jar salads for work and that keeps me going for the afternoon. Decent bedtime. #3rdchat
I can't say that I am the best. I like quick projects like scarves right now. The Special Olympics used to have a program and I would crochet scarfs for participants. They are quick and easy. It is a great sense of accomplishment. #3rdchat
A4 not enough. I'm having some issues lately and it has slowed me way down. I'm hoping my physical therapy will do wonders! I can tell when my class needs to get outside and run around so do the teachers! #3rdchat
A4: I workout every morning before going to school. Cardio and strength training helps me to enter school with a can-do attitude. 🏃🏻♂️🏋️🏻♂️=🤓👍#3rdChat
I like fiction - fantasy, Anne Rice, nothing too scary or too sad
each month we (book club) take turns choosing a different book - I've read so many books that I would have never picked up #3rdchat
Enjoyed chatting with you all tonight! My ipad is on 3% so I’m signing off before I get kicked off. Hope you all have a great rest of the week! #3rdchat
Q6: As educators, we are often overbooks and have piled too much on our plates. Is there anything that you need to remove from your plate that is causing you to lose your ability to maintain balance? #3rdchat
A6: I have chaired many committees because I am somewhat of a control freak, Type A, and like things done correctly. This year I took a lot of those extra responsibilities off my plate and I couldn't be happier. I can still be a runner and not have to do Everything! #3rdchat
I decided I needed to end my involvement in a group. I enjoyed the time with them, but I was finding myself stretched too thin on those days. I had to make a choice. Having to reevaluate focus on if things are helping me meet big rock goals. #3rdchat
I work two jobs, so what ends up coming off my plate is TV and movies. I refuse to let go of my reading. My kids are grown and in college, so that frees some time for me, too. #3rdchat
Q7: In our classrooms, we are dealing with the stresses of planning engaging lessons, managing behavior, and preparing students for the future. How do you encourage self care in your classroom with your students? #3rdchat
A7: not sure if this is self-care but I've been teaching organizational skills so that there is less stress of losing things and I can tell it makes them feel good #3rdchat
Old practices that do not yield the results we need. Need to shed those things we always did before because we always do them. This year, just cross them off. #3rdchat

A6 I read an article a while back by Brianna Wiest that said self care is having a life you don’t need to constantly escape. When I think about this concept I can prioritize better and see the big picture. The more I do this the better. #3rdchat
A7: We have a lot of discussions during our morning meetings and also practice several mindful techniques. I feel like I model self-care and show my students support of it. #3rdchat
