#games4ed discussions cover ways in which gaming can be used in education. Games mirror the way the human mind was designed to learn. They motivate players to take risks and actions, persevere through failures, set and achieve increasingly difficult goals, and devote attention, time, and effort to acquiring knowledge and skills. All this while the game is tracking the player’s actions and assessing the player’s achievements and skills. Isn’t this what we want from education?
Hello from Nebraska!! Melissa from Valentine, NE, 11-12 ELA. Favorite holiday food: Chips and dip! And those Krispie balls with caramel on them :) #games4ed
Heya! Adam. USHIS teacher from South Carolina. Fav food has to be the little chocolate Santas... Or Pepperment Bark... Maybe hot cocoa... Definitely cabernet! #games4ed
A1 - I quit my job... Oh wait, that went well. Hmm. Well, I'm experimenting with iOS apps and finally even have a tiny game up on testflight (not #edtech though). It's been fun to get back to programming. #games4ed
A1 I really enjoyed doing station rotations in class for something different, and also probably the best was our #pbl connections with schools in Argentina, Mexico and SPain, done through @edmodo and @Flipgrid#games4ed
A1: This year I used much more standards-based grading, and it went GREAT! I love having the students and me assess work directly correlated with the standards. #games4ed
A1 I have a post coming on this. So many good things. Heart Late system. Boss Fight spreadsheets, Ranking systems. A few duds... But that is A2 #games4ed
A1) Almost forgot, my updated XP tracker worked out extremely well too. Not sure more kids cared but it cut a ton of work out my class game for me. #games4ed

Yes, it took out #pbl to such a higher level, the Ss in presenting said it helped them to "sculpt" their PBL and they never could have learned it through video, book, having that authentic piece made a huge difference for us all #games4ed
A2: Dungeons. It's hard to build a dungeon that relates to their learning using #GBL. It was fun, but not that educational. I will try again. #games4ed
A2 - am I repeating myself if I say quitting my job? Um, not as well as expected, but I still think it was the right choice. So yes, will try again. And it's allowing me to explore cool new #edtech ideas. #games4ed
A2 I will say hyperdocs, but they went well, I just didn't organize them right at first. But it was the first time and the Ss really enjoyed it and learned a lot, enjoyed the individual pace, so I can work on making it better #games4ed
any ideas on what to do with my 1st grade students tomorrow? I'm picking something to do with them for like my last "day" since next week is crazy with Christmas stuff and I am struggling with what to pick.
Agreed - penalties are hard when you want to encourage forward progression and worried they'll get caught up in the "negative." You teach middle schoolers, right? Let me think about it... will message you any ideas I have #games4ed.
I want to do more quest based next semester for the same reason, to get more personal pace for students. I've done a few hyperdocs, but need to do more! #games4ed
A3 I have Ss do reflections, we either use @nearpod activities or Google forms, I teach H.S., so no semester ends really but a good break to review, reflect and set new goals #games4ed
Our LMS shows what Ss have mastered and what they still need to work on. We had the Ss look at what they are lowest at and create a 60 second tutorial on that and post in FlipGrid. #games4ed
A2: My side quests are still such a work in progress. I am still going to work on them and tweek some more, but they are not working the way I want right now. #games4ed
Agreed. I took a break from Classcraft, and that was one reason. More and more, I didn't like the negative. I think I'll go back, but use more of the quest based tools #games4ed
When they create games with @quizizz or @GetKahoot or even make up their own games with paper, like dice to do verb conjugations, or make up a wordsearch #games4ed

A4: Today, I just shared their Twine story links on our daily agenda. As the day progressed, I found out Ss were talking about each other's stories outside of class--natural feedback! I'm thinking about adding a post-it note feedback wall Monday #games4ed
I think I just don’t have enough interest in the quests, and for at least one class interest in the game. I think my game needs a booster shot with my 7th grade. #games4ed
I've had similar groups like that (though I teach 11-12 grade.) Some get into it far more than others. If some of the classes are buying in, I'd call it a win! #games4ed
A4: I have my Ss do a reflection after each unit where I ask what could make the unit better or what would they change if they were uncharge. We use our LMS discussion boards and @Flipgrid to give feedback to each other. #games4ed
Notnsire if I've shared this before but here are my power cards... Similar to abilities. I also have Avatar types which I need to tweak but were pretty effective. #games4edhttps://t.co/uqdP7W4LRw
A4: Bringing up old school from earlier, we did argument peer review just using hard copy forms by jigsaw--each group focused on one section of the paper. The Ss said they preferred it to online methods. #games4ed
Not sure I got to A2, but lack of narrative is my answer. I'd planned to integrate it into vocab word introduction, and didn't happen. Always next year... #games4ed
I am thinking that is what I need to do. My 6’s are into it but not my 7th, so I am thinking I will have them add to the game when we get back. #games4ed

Working with my Boss Fight Sheets I am finding that too many options is overwhelming. I have pared back on total number of powers so they can really think about what they have. Wonder if a less is more approach might help #games4ed

I've been trying to integrate more real world / physical stuff too. We are heavily techie at my school. A lot like getting their face out of a screen. #games4ed
Sometimes I think less is more. Even with recommending books, I find three or four is better than a shelfful. Maybe same with powers. 2-4 is less overwhelming, at least early in game #games4ed

Like choosing a toothpaste, too many options can make you more indecisive. Sometimes better to be forced to choose between two semi-crappy, then 6 good. #games4ed

I like this idea a lot. I feel like our tech pendulum is starting to swing the other way as we keep looking for our sweet spot in technology and school #games4ed

Maybe. I dont remember I do think a real choice is helpful. At least Juniors can sniff out a con like no ones business. A meaningful choice helps with buy in. I think too many choicrs does lead to paralysis by analysis #games4ed

A5: It wasn't content related, but today all Ts brought snacks for our students and they ate the last five minutes while we shared acts of kindness that students wrote down through the week. It was awesome! #games4ed
A6 Want to work more with #coding and also creating games, continue to work with @cospaces_edu use @bloxelsbuilder and Ss created breakouts, and learn right with them :) #games4ed

A6 I am trying to improve my guild system. SC is getting new SS standards (just released) for 2020 and they are very theme and PBL centered so i want to work that in through guilds and games #games4ed
A6 - Not necessarily into classrooms, but I want to make good progress on building out an idea I have, so testing could be ready summer/fall. (and complete my mini game...) #games4ed
I have not required side quests before, but I am thinking I may change that as well for at least 1. Trying to decide if that is a good thing or not. #games4ed
BTW, if anyone wants to try my mini game (and has something iOS), dm me your email and I'll invite you to test flight. Think old school side scroller (but vertical). #games4ed
Mr. Roughton said the same. And I'm not sure it's a bad idea. If they have a choice of three and some dedicated class time, it could be a good intro to them--and to the benefits of doing side quests #games4ed

And I know for me, I get caught up in the number of choices--I love the potential of LOTS of things. But sometimes 2-3 choices is still giving choice #games4ed

Ibread a cool article from a college prof that uses XP and "competency badges" as a grade. Have to have at least one skill badge for a B kind of thing. I think @mrmatera has talked about that too. Might be a nice way I,to requiring sidequests. #games4ed
There's a reason choose your own adventure books have choices that keep bring the reader back to the main path. Too many choices explodes really quickly, and hard to keep track of for both players and designers. #games4ed

A7: Even though I have games in my game cupboard that need played still, I want Secret Hitler. For no other reason than it looks fun when I saw other ppl play it! #games4ed
A7 I'm really hoping for a nice podcast mic. I'm adding that to my "hope to do someday" list. I also want 3-4 more sets of D&D polyhedral dice! #games4ed
I'm,grooming, monsoon to be me weird board gamer with me. He wants the full Ticket to Ride game. I really want to try Pandemic. We are also looking into getting Yugioh starter decks! #games4ed
The specific were two citizen science options with adorable seals and majestic elephants. Shamelessly going for the animal attraction option. I am sure I’ll reflect on it in a chat or blog. #games4ed.

Wow, for the last #games4ed chat of 2017, it was a lovely evening with lovely folks! I'm so thankful to call you all part of my #PLN! Have an amazing last few days here before the break!
