Our first question is coming up; let’s get ready to chat! Please preface your responses with A1) Excited to collaborate and share ideas with you today about developing teamwork challenges. #gtchat
Anna, 6-12th grade Gifted Facilitator from the Wichita, KS Metro. Multi-tasking tonight, but I want to share the full transcript when we are done with my @KSDEredesign team. #gtchat
#gtchat A1) I agree! I have seen how grouping helps students learn, become better listners, learn life skills, and understand their classmates and themselves.

YES!! Sometimes gifted learners get caught up with the idea of success & perfectionism and TOTALLY miss the depths other students are engaged in group work #gtchat
A1. They need the opportunity to be able to choose their own groups/learning situation. Needs to be very flexible based on needs, situation and task. #gtchat
A1: Something they've never done - no groups. Something they're better at than others - lead or no groups. No strategy - my strategy is to maintain everyone's peace self dignity and overall peace. #gtchat
A1) #gtchat Let me also offer another perspective as well. Grouping by ability and interest are important, BUT we all know life is not always so neat and tidy. Students will face MANY situations in live when they will not get to work with someone like them.
A2) #gtchat my experience as a classroom teacher is GT peers, interest peers, same aged, It depends on student. As a parent, my GT did not want to be bothered by others in group at all
A2: I do full inclusion so we have very diverse rooms. My gifted Ss always seemed to know what they needed/could handle depending on the activity. Our classes are around 12 Ss. #gtchat
#gtchat They also need to see the value in how others think and do things. So it does not always have to be similiar interests and abilities. It is a GREAT skill to learn how different people think and do things.
A1 - Grouping example: 7-8 grade GT kids in social studies. Focus is on common concepts with details US History (8th) and Tx history (7th). #gtchat#gtchat
A2) It has been my experience, that GT students overwhelmingly prefer to work with other intellectual peers for numerous reasons. But I am well aware of the need to learn to work with all abilities ... good prep for adulthood! #gtchat
A1) I also really hate when people throw the "life's not like that" phrase around RE: being w/Ss not like them, because we DO make choices in major, profession and location of employment. If we don't like it enough, we leave #gtchat

A2) So much depends on the kids. Stretching them to work with people unlike them is good, but if the differences are too great and they don't have help navigating them, the experience can put them off groups and collaboration completely. #gtchat
A2) #Paideia & #socraticseminar are powerful tools to engage the whole group. Often times, the GT learners are the ones who need help & need to be stretched #gtchat
Agree. That's where we as teachers set the expectations with the students. "We all sink or we all swim." Create a culture of collective responsibility. #gtchat
A2) #gtchat This is important to remember. There is not one right way to group students. Students should have experiences with many styles of grouping throuout the school year. Peer to Peer / By Ability / Teacher Choice / Student Choice.
A3) Gifted students need to experience working on a team early on to understand how to interact with others and prepare for later academic challenges. #gtchat
A3 #gtchat Probably the biggest benifit is helping GT students to see they do not have to deal with everything on thier own. It is common for GT students to take on to much and place pressure on themselves. Grouping helps them to see its OK to reach out and ask for help.

A3) Gifted students can benefit from the experience of working with multiple ability peers that mirror the society in which they will one day work and live. #gtchat

A3) #gtchat I think @cossie29 makes a GREAT point! Differing perspectives is another reason we at @AILTQ love grouping students. Inside our academic competition (Team Quest) we see this everyday.
Agree Anna. It's like that for many adults too. I love learning on my own but I know how much I'm pushed in my thinking when I learn alongside others - like in these chats! :) #gtchat
A3: Is it me, or is growth mindset the most challenging thing to foster. Painful as it is, they are better together. Layers of lessons there. Keep it simple because the group work 'is' the lesson. #gtchat
A4) Parents can communicate their own participation in working in groups to their children and how it has made a difference in their work experience. #gtchat

By engaging in authentic learning experiences, like PBL, where it takes a team to come to a solution. Too often gt kids are under challenged in the products they are to produce and don't need to rely on others to get the job or the learning done. #gtchat
A4) Use examples of where it is essential. In a band or choir, each section and part is doing its own thing. By itself it is okay but, when put together it is beautiful! #gtchat
A3) Benefits of fostering team building through group work could include improved ability to share and empathize and increased flexibility and acknowledging other ideas #gtchat
A4 I also have a unique way of doing test retakes where I offer a "collaboration day" for students to look and work through a blank copy of the test. There's zero stigma and Ss quickly see that the best way to break barriers and learn is to work together #gtchat
A4) Projects like theatrical production where different skill sets are required for a successful result are very powerful for modelling team functioning in the work force. #gtchat
A4) #gtchat With a global economy that we see today, being able to communicate and work with other is more important than ever before. The days of sitting in a cubical for 8 hours and never talking to anyone are not as prevalent as they once were. Students must be TAUGHT teamwork

Authentic project-based learning is critical! It can’t just be “do projects” - it’s about learning! They must have voice and choice in their work. #gtchat
Love this. I used to design the curriculum/learning with the students. Started doing this with my Year 3s (7 year-olds) in 1999 when I started teaching. Power is in the collaboration and choice. #gtchat
I remember when my kids' school first attempted PBL - teacher handed out yellow folders with pre-assigned projects to each GT student. Couldn't understand why Ss balked at completing projects! #gtchat

A4: Collaboration is not an option in my class. Everyday, all period students work together. In my flipped classroom they take control of their learning. #gtchat
Q4) We need gifted learners to reflect their own learning processes that have to do with values, beliefs, & character. Academic achievement isn't what life is all about #gtchat#reflective
Uh oh - PBL will never work if they use it like that. Doomed to failure. Must be real and have a purpose - and the end point must have a 'so what?' What's the next step - where could we go with this? What are the possibilities? #gtchat
A4) #gtchat Companies today are learning that being a team player and someone having still to colaborate is SOOOOOO important! Ofter if a job canitdate can demostrate the ability to work together they have a better chance at getting the job over a more "qualified" person
A4) 1/2 Our end of year project is "physics of" in groups of 4 #APPhysics1 Ss had to pick anything to study the physics of. The only stipulation was it had to be something they could actually collect data on. Really excited for the results Monday! #gtchat
2/2) Ss learned quickly that many of their projects took a lot more time than 6 weeks and now have more questions than they started with! A sign of good research! #gtchat
A5) One of the best ways to impress upon children the importance of anything is to model the behavior you want to see in them. Participating in community service and including them whenever possible sends a powerful message. #gtchat
Gives PBL a bad rap! It’s an amazing learning process when done well! I remember kids bringing home assignments that parents completed for them... You could always tell - not much learning going on there (for the kid). #gtchat
A5) #gtchat I have had success with students selecting research topics and then being experts & teaching others; however, I have also had particular GT kids refuse and work alone. I could not convince him of the value
We just do this all. the. time. Whether it's group lab work, or peer review of that work, or test corrections or "board meetings" where I refuse to step in and give them help or the right answer. #gtchat
My students have always been teachers too. They've run workshops, organised learning sessions - always with my support and the skills needed taught first or as needed. They've needed to assign roles in many cases so the skills are learned that way. #gtchat
Q4) How can we encourage our students to value teamwork when students are assessed based on their academic achievement?
All high-stakes testings have nothing to do with teamwork, intrinsic values, and civic engagement. #gtchat
A5) #gtchat Ask them to divide their paper in two. On oneside write jobs that require that you not talk to anyone / interact with anyone / or work with anyone. Then on the other side write jobs where you MUST do one or more. Its pretty powerful to see it in print.
A5) #gtchat depending on buy in-this is great. As a parent, really struggled with this. DS did not have patience for others, poor communication and not enough stamina/interest to stick with it-ugh
This is where we've got to fight for change globally. We have completely bonkers systems where there is a disconnect between the learning and assessment. #gtchat

A6) #gtchat Thats a GREAT Question! I started out 22 years ago when I was asked to assist a friend to present the "paper/pencil" portion of an academic competion. It was such a fun expereince that I have turned it into my lifes work.
#gtchat It has been a pleasure chatting with everyone tonight. The Team Quest Theme for next school year will be "Secrets of the Sea" We will be posting about our new program throughout the summer on https://t.co/sBPMNh0YPD Like Us to keep in touch
