One of the most important things I've learnt through time is to respect sleep times. You will code 10 times faster if you are fresh and rested rather than being up at 4am on a wednesday. #DevDiscuss

My daily self care routine is all done in the morning: meditate for 10 minutes, and workout for 30. It's enough to keep me centered.
My favorite self care is every month I get a massage. It's an hour of me time that helps with the programmer desk hunch. #DevDiscuss

#DevDiscuss Meditation & a mile run in the morning. Pomodoro when possible through the day. An hour walk at the end of the day. Philosophy studies in the evening.
My wife and I cook really good food together. There is, unfortunately, a coordinated effort amongst my pants to all get smaller at the same time. The two are unrelated. #DevDiscuss
I also engage in physical activity. I used to dance professionally for the local arena football team. I’ve done martial arts. Now I do small group training sessions twice a week. Releasing endorphins and all that jazz. #DevDiscuss

Balance: Designate time for your career and your personal life
Boundaries: Set clear delineations and do not cross them
Diversions: Allow yourself to be distracted by family, friends, and hobbies.

I speak out against bigotry. A lot. It keeps me grounded and reminds me of what is most important in the larger scheme of things. The best self-care I can engage in is to actually *be* my most authentic self, and speaking my truth is the foundation of that. #DevDiscuss

How often do you engage in self-care oriented activities? Is it regular small things, longer vacations? Is it part of a routine or a bit sporadic? #devdiscuss
I have a daily routine. I also try to take a vacation (long weekend or week long) once a quarter. It's good for your brain to have breaks away from work. #DevDiscuss

I try to do some sort of self-care every day, but sometimes it doesn't work out. Vacations are a must every year (even 2 days off makes a big difference). Self-care is sporadic right now but it's being worked on. #DevDiscusshttps://t.co/vm7mf0OuNR

It's very clear from this discussion that everyone engages in self-care in different ways. If you're not great at finding opportunities, for self-care, maybe you can experiment with different things. #DevDiscuss

do you set up an out of office (on email and phone) when taking a long weekend or do you just go when your brain tells you it's time to go? #DevDiscuss
Some form of self-care is necessary every day IMO, even if it’s 15 min of clearing your mind. Self-care is about doing what you need to do to stay sane and that’s an everyday job for most. #DevDiscuss

I make sure that when I don’t want to be using the computer, normally because I have done too much, I step away from it and do something, anything else. #DevDiscuss
Self-care is a regular thing but not always the same. Sometimes it's a nap, other times it is an early bedtime, and sometime it is just a good movie instead of code or studies. Breaks are important. I don't want code to become a chore. #DevDiscuss

Definitely sporadic. But getting outside helps! I wrote about this a while back. In winter, I love to take a random day off and go skiing to recharge my brain. https://t.co/SIxbgcByK5#devdiscuss
Purposefully getting up during the day and talking to people. At the coffee pot, in the lobby. The custodial staff, admins, coworkers, the boss. And more than just "hi how are you". Often about their day, not mine. #devdiscuss

Once a week from 5pm till bed my wife and I get the night off from kids, dinner, each other, bedtime routines, etc. Super helpful for us as our personalities need time to decompress. #DevDiscuss
The best self care is a job that doesn't burn you out. If it gets to that point, you need a change, not a spa day. Talk to your boss. If they won't listen, talk to someone else's boss.

If you travel for conferences, try to add an extra day to explore the city you're in. You'll come back refreshed and ready to use the knowledge you learned at the conference. #DevDiscuss#WanderLust

If I'm taking a whole day off, I definitely do an OOO and turn off email on my phone. If I'm just leaving after lunch on Friday, I shoot my team an email that I'm leaving and I might check emails occasionally that afternoon. #DevDiscuss
#DevDiscuss Daily exercise and just getting out. Hiking, climbing, crawling out to the middle of nowhere in my truck, tooling on my old motorcycle. When I'm really stressed, I blow up some cans + bottles with my old rifle. Something very cathartic about harmless destruction.
I have recurring rest periods blocked out on my calendar:
1 day off every week
1 weekend off every 7 weeks
1 week off every 7 months
Even if I don't take them it triggers me to find a way to restore #devdiscuss

Daily, I try to walk away from the screen or do something unrelated to work just to relax my brain. Exercise is a good stress relief if i am stuck on a problem. #devdiscuss
I would also note that when I take week long vacations, I turn on my OOO, but I do allow myself 15 minutes once a day to check emails and clear out the noise. I'd rather sacrifice a bit than come back to 1000 emails. #DevDiscuss
My self-care usually involves playing guitar, or being outside in nature. Something non-techy. Playing hockey weekly helps me decompress, too. #DevDiscuss
Whenever I possibly can. Hard since full time job plus toddler at home. Usually try for 15 mins at least daily of alone time though, even if it’s just a short walk or a beer. Rarely scheduled, just when I get a moment. Like now. #devdiscuss
Nice to know what others are doing, when I turn on my OOO I don't allow myself to check email (or phone since I have a separate work phone) unless I know there is an important email coming in. Everything else can wait. #DevDiscuss
#devdiscuss Daily self-care: exercise, quiet reading, tidy surroundings. Other regular self-care: get out of the house, short holidays with family, play games.

+1 for Audiobooks. I've added the extra step of "I can only listen to my audiobook when I'm at the gym". Gives me added incentive to go work out if I'm listening to a good story. #devdiscuss
I left the developer life time ago, I understood that I cannot handle my stress and anxiety derived of a formal job, so now I only do it for fun. #DevDiscuss

I know this sounds kind of soft, but I speak to my Dad. Every day after work, regardless of how hectic our lives are. It’s typically what I look forward to in the evening and it calms me. 😊 #DevDiscuss

#DevDiscuss Self-care:
- Body: Get out of the house - don't take the lift, and run up AND down the stairs.
- Mind: Hang out with friends and family! Go crazy, or just watch a film.
- Spirit: Meditate, follow a philosophy (currently reading about Stoicism).

I love to walk around with an audiobook in my ears. I can walk for hours. The worst, though, is all of a sudden getting really tired and being super far from everything 😱 #DevDiscuss

This. I find myself easily falling into a negative funk that spirals from there. How have you managed to improve / not beat yourself up so much? #devdiscuss
yep exactly, I know if my OOO is setup then clients don't expect an answer and know how to get an answer (if there is a need for an answer) #DevDiscuss
My best form of self-care on the job is carving out some time to just do some thoughtful refactoring in a language I enjoy working in. As long as it goes pretty smoothly and you can do some good work you're proud of, it's such a nice way to spend an afternoon. #DevDiscuss

Sometimes feelings of failure = "I didn't meet someone's expectations"
IMO success = "did I show up? did I give my best? was I kind to others?" #devdiscuss#selfcare
#DevDiscuss I have been training my body and mind to fight as an armored knight, with real, steel weapons. Not sharp, but still... About the best workout I've had. Kotlin by day, steel fighting on the weekends, bodybuilding in the mornings.

I negotiated PTO in total compensation, asked for time for counseling/therapy sessions, and asked for a sabbatical after 5 years.
I ask for a lot of things. The worst people can say is "no" 🙃 #DevDiscuss
If possible, I think it's worth trying to set expectations early, before it's critical for your sanity to say something. Create a dialogue that makes the issue more digestible when needed #DevDiscuss
I'm blessed to work with people who will say things like "you've put in a bunch of hours this week. You should leave early today." Or "Let's do lunch/happy hour. I could use a break."
#DevDiscuss
I’ve found it takes constant encouragement to maintain. Keep reminding colleagues that when you’re sick, you should stay home. To not work excessive hours. To take breaks, lunch, etc. #devdiscuss
Practice mindfulness
Exercise regularly
Stay hydrated
No work stuff after 5pm or weekends unless something is on fire
Try (and fail) to get proper sleep
Move and stretch throughout the day (or squat)
If possible eat out
No calls or texts during lunch #DevDiscuss

Yes, this is crucial. Don’t wait for things to be out of control before you start trying to reign it in. Build health and self-care into your normal working week. #devdiscuss
I'm also blessed to work at a company that has a gym and personal trainers on staff. There's nothing like being able to meet up with a coworker to work out every morning. It's great self care accountability. #DevDiscuss

I try to do the same, but I think it shoots me in the foot at times. It seems like me saying I'm at capacity or overworked means being passed over when a project comes along #devdiscuss
#DevDiscuss always see the sunlight (even through clouds) everyday. Some fresh air too. Workouts ♥. Hobbies that make the world a better place. Sleep is top priority.
Whenever someone gets really stuck, we take a walk outside and relax for a bit. The solution to the problem almost always surfaces immediately when we return. #DevDiscuss

If a workplace wants to retain their staff, it is in their best interest to respect someone speaking up and saying that they need a break or that they have too much on their plate. #DevDiscuss
