a4: a combination of knowledge, skills, and employ-ability traits
Well said! We need to make sure we teach students how to learn! Our world is in constant change!
A4:a danger is not to prepare students as life-long learners as we rush to meet the needs of employers
A4: Industry ready means being ready for high paced, collaborative, problem solving, attention to detail type of work.
A3) Volunteer all-year long. Last year, a few Ss built garden for homeless vets @ OKC's VA. https://t.co/LMjdmDDfbO

A4. Industry ready means producing Ss who need minimal OJT. Saves the companies money and the students time.
Flexibility and adaptability are key!

Yes! We need to inspire our studnets to be innovators!
No, just like every other classroom, it fits the needs of the learners and the fields they are preparing for.
I also think industry ready means Ss don't necessarily have to take on huge crippling student debt!
A4) S's that have the knowledge and technological skills to make industry better.
A3: annually has Ss conduct Chain of Love, raising awareness for this year donating over $9k.
Our local Chamber of Commerce suggested instead of Entrepreneurship the class should be called problem solvers. I loved that idea!
A4: We need 2 not only prepare Ss 2 fill jobs, but create jobs too. Focus on bldg inherent skills & talents rather than fixing def.
Amen! https://t.co/iPWawP9VcV
I also think industry ready means Ss don't necessarily have to take on huge crippling student debt!
A4. Are career tech educators ready for competition from other areas of education in this area?

Rules are always overrated anyways =)
A4 Being prepared to step into the workforce with the skills and training necessary to do the job, in whatever industry

I see it as working together, not competition. But, it's hard to match the tuition costs of . https://t.co/GCY8TIZX5O
A4. Are career tech educators ready for competition from other areas of education in this area?
A4 - Managers that I meet say the soft skills are lacking. They can teach the job, but students need those soft skills!
A5: twitter doesn't allow me to type that much. ;-) I worked in healthcare for 6 yrs b4 I became a teacher. I could go all night.
A4: helps ALL students succeed in Industry skills AND academic skills. We can and do teach both.
A4 In some ways they’re ahead. They don’t req as much csework outside of skilled area as higher ed. Have comm. rel. with business
A4 Students are ready for employment day one with full efficiency!
A4 would also add & to this list! https://t.co/TGzWR0gs55
A4 Ability to have good work ethic, ability to follow the leader, ability to grow
Agreed Joe, Careertech stays industry ready so our Ss can too. . https://t.co/xzy46ijqB0
A4. Are career tech educators ready for competition from other areas of education in this area?
What would you say are the top 3 soft skills needed?
A5. From the instructional side, finding enough clinical sited for all students
We have to teach soft skills! I agree! https://t.co/sRvBylOtnK
A4 - Managers that I meet say the soft skills are lacking. They can teach the job, but students need those soft skills!
A5: From my classroom perspective, it is the update of ICD-10 medical coding. Costing rural hospitals big bucks.
A5 It will be a growing industry. Cost and regulations will close smaller facilities. Rural areas will have a hard time.
A5) Not having enough qualified people to fill the open positions.
A5: Too many people fail to access prev med & healthy habits. Like not changing oil in car. Future repairs are much more expensive.
A5) Continuous learning is a must. I'm guessing that clientele can change for practices rather quick. Must be responsive to needs.
A5: Insurance costs, Emergency room abuse, rx addiction, etc. The list goes on and on. (you can tell I worked ER)
Yes!! No matter the path...help Ss find their passion! https://t.co/BFa6H1NgZR
4)T's helping student find their passion, development their skills and leading by example
A5) Baby boomers are retiring...and if we're being honest...the new, in-demand workforce must work to keep them alive.
A5 I think there's a lot of potential in health analytics and big data...I'd like to see more opportunities for Ss to work w/ that!
A5: It's the same concern we have for our students--the "give me" mentality and the abuse of the system
Nothing like honesty. https://t.co/djHoI7cg5u
A5) Baby boomers are retiring...and if we're being honest...the new, in-demand workforce must work to keep them alive.
- I think customer service, time management, and professionalism would certainly be among the top skills. https://t.co/Z1vq3zkPo6
What would you say are the top 3 soft skills needed?
I'd add adaptation, creativity, and problem solving to that list too! https://t.co/4BoQerl5eO
- I think customer service, time management, and professionalism would certainly be among the top skills. https://t.co/Z1vq3zkPo6
What would you say are the top 3 soft skills needed?
A5: I think we need to prepare Ss on how to make decisions on their own. They need to talk to the Doctor not just mom or dad.
employers nationwide continuously seek: &
Top skills would be working with others to solve problems with respect and professionalism
A5 People making unnecessary healthcare visits they can't pay for. Seen it in the business for years.
You are right! Our rural hospital shut its doors last week.
A5 maybe the same issues as education? Equitable access to all.
A5: There will be more people who need healthcare and less people qualified to take care of them.
A5: There really needs to be programs where Ss shadow a person in their chosen industry. This needs to happen b4 they choose.
There are several - problem solving for sure and team player as well!! https://t.co/E0kPbEZ8MN
I would also add communication skills. Our students are lacking in this area in my opinion!
A4 Careertech should look for collaborating with all levels of education. https://t.co/gGFiYtS6kH
A4. Are career tech educators ready for competition from other areas of education in this area?
A5: Not internships, by then it's too late. I mean BEFORE they actually have decided. When they're in the "thinking" stage.
Q4,A1 Communication skills and flexibility
What age/grade do you think this needs to happen Kimberly?
A5: AGREED! This would be beneficial in every area, not just healthcare. https://t.co/zUEpdr0HlP
A5: There really needs to be programs where Ss shadow a person in their chosen industry. This needs to happen b4 they choose.
What if we had themed ? Like a where Ss tackled today's healthcare problems?
Like how will they know what mechanical engineers really do? Or what surgeons have to encounter? How will they know?!
There would be a lot of "out of the box" thinking! Ss know few boundaries! https://t.co/x02FIvez0G
What if we had themed ? Like a where Ss tackled today's healthcare problems?
Taking care of the baby boomers, do the math huge number will need help A5
Q6 What are some specific ways to engage middle school student in meaningful STEM education? https://t.co/RMrQLHzKO1
@ huff503 I agree! We are supposed to be in this for the students. Not Competition, but best for students. https://t.co/DSSArX8Vxj
A4 Careertech should look for collaborating with all levels of education. https://t.co/gGFiYtS6kH
A4. Are career tech educators ready for competition from other areas of education in this area?
A6) Middle schools S’s need to have an introduction to what is offered at the HS level.
Sometimes tough problems like effective rural healthcare needs "out of the box" solutions!
HS isn't teaching this stuff! I'm sorry but I'm on a rant now.I'm just wondering why there isn't a program. They shld b immersed nit
A5 not enough "slots" to train physician assistants in OK each year or med school students
A6 Real life problems solved in school makerspaces. S1 has problem, S2 solves it
A6 Tie it to real world challenges! Don't just play at changing the world, do it!
Could pair with OSU Coll of Med to develop ideas for rural med. https://t.co/aGuOjNWdCd
Sometimes tough problems like effective rural healthcare needs "out of the box" solutions!
Q6: Fenway School in BOS has students do project based learning with industry community members
Reading. Researching. Ss who can/will do these can learn anything they want.
A6 Project Lead the Way I recommend training all staff in elem. if possible. There’s an elem. in Tulsa area that does it well.
A6: STEM is great, but let's not forget that some students love art and music solve real world problems using those mediums.
RT FatCatArtist What if we had themed ? Like a where Ss tackled today's healthcare problems?
A6) is having a "math night", which involves professionals speaking about math in their profession.
A6: Like literacy, STEM needs to be across the curr. Creativity, PS'ing, scientific thinking, comm, and use of tech in all courses.
And communications is needed by ALL students. https://t.co/3V4ajymcux
A6: STEM is great, but let's not forget that some students love art and music solve real world problems using those mediums.
I think the key is having the right mentors for a themed challenge...to give context!
A6:Middle schoolers need to see, hear, touch, feel, & experience future STEM opportunities. More hands on, real world applications.
A6: While designing for MS s's we need to build pipeline so they can continue to be engaged after MS. https://t.co/hPArgbiKjB
Q6 What are some specific ways to engage middle school student in meaningful STEM education? https://t.co/RMrQLHzKO1
Make STEM to STEAM by adding art. Design is essential to success in modern life.
Great point. So moving from STEM to STEAM to engage students
A6 More Hands on... Makerspaces are a an amazing way to grow and explore unknown interests.Clinton has some awesome things happening
A6) Middle schools S's need to have hands on experience.
Well said! I teach Medical Assisting and they go to work as fast as I can get them through the class!
A6) Make the community and surrounding communities the classroom. The industry want Ss that are prepared, we must expose them to it.
A6: Have career days at school, focus the curriculum on their interests and career choices, & have them keep a career portfolio.
A6 be willing to let the S's drive the ship. They will come up with better STEM activities than we will.
I prefer STEM = Strategies That Engage Minds!
A6: By getting them out of the classroom and putting them right in the center of it where it is happening.
Yes and start early...maker space, genius hour...as Ss experience and grow direction will be more defined https://t.co/t86GAWhkXc
What if we had themed ? Like a where Ss tackled today's healthcare problems?
Love this idea https://t.co/kuIIEUCO6q
A6: Have career days at school, focus the curriculum on their interests and career choices, & have them keep a career portfolio.
A6: I think the key is in the question: "meaningful". Learning must be relevant.
A6: Middle school grades should be ground zero for introducing students to STEM & opportunities.
A6 CT STEM Gateway programs expose Ss to our HS pre-eng, computer science & biomed Ps & careers
A6) Make the change from to . -- It's time to add the Arts.
A5 Adding in that a (Art) in Stem.. STEAM:)
I like this. Did STEM ever really go away? I'm afraid it has just been repackaged as "next shiny thing."
A6 Find what interests your student and facilitate it. You learn, they learn, and they stay engaged.
The Agriscience fair really has been working good with this. Ss get in depth in areas of interest. https://t.co/Vb5Dj17e1l
Q6 What are some specific ways to engage middle school student in meaningful STEM education? https://t.co/RMrQLHzKO1
Dawn Cash signing out.. Nice chatting tonight
A6 STEM is great but how about read and write first so they can formulate a hypothesis?
A7: Great resource for students, teachers, and parents!
A6 Don't wait to get them excited...start in elem and excitement will build!!
A7 We are using at Duncan! Great information!!
gotta love buzz words but ultimately it's about creating meaningful educational experiences for Ss
Have to bounce a little early. Loved the chat tonight. Career tech has saved some of my Ss lives. Have a great week !
A6 Use students' interests. and are games to teach STEM. Use them to gain interest or expand knowledge.
A7: Share with every school we visit. People still don't know. A powerful tool! (and no cost to site) https://t.co/8QrrdoR4rN
Sure sounds like to me! https://t.co/ePZk3YcD5Y

A7: I think this is a great resource. I didn't know about unitl just now.
And grossly misinterpreted. Somehow the S and M have gone missing.
A6) We work w/ Moore & Norman schools early to get Ss enrolled into our pre-engineering program. Ss are taught curriculum.
A6: mentorships with business & industry. No one succeeds alone.
Adding the A (art) in STEM is a great idea and just plain common sense to me. https://t.co/PzyIoYb8HL

Agreed. The Arts rock. Should be Steam. Great idea.
Career Tech educators need to focus on the importance of career information and plans of study.
A7 Amazing, powerful tool for all users!
A7) I would like to think that all the CTE T's in OKCPS are using it. With everything else that is put on their plate I am not sure.
A7 No, never heard of it. What grade level recommendations?
A6:Now we have added A to STE_M for the arts. Why not add R for reading, another A for athletics & use ASTREAM? We do it 2 ourselves
for me, STEM isn't subject specific, I teach STEM strategies 2 English & Social Studies Ts
. just launched in August! Happy to help you get started.
I'm a mom to an 18,19, 21 yo. I had many conversations w/them about what certain careers involve. I felt like school should have 2.
We use it for freshmen up to seniors at Duncan. I believe it has benefits for middle school age as well.
A7) How has been shown to non-CTE teachers or is it only CTE?
A7 provides students tools to research career opportunities and plan for their future - at no cost!
Agreed. is the tool to help. https://t.co/gkmT1PmFEB

You must check it out! Start as low as identifying occupations all the way to connecting with employers!
Perhaps with appropriate funding, schools would have the resources to have those conversations during high school.
Great chat! Have to work on Donor's Choose homework for technology class. Have a great week.
Amen! https://t.co/MCG3YS28QG

Let's just teach the whole child...let's stop placing them in neat tiddy one size fits all boxes. STEM STEAM STREAM to many letters!
Without reading, there won't be much STEM or anything else. They can't pass those career classes without it. https://t.co/ghppH1mgxz
Why not just add reading and make it STREAM?
it is for everyone, K-12 and even adults!
A7 MS and up right now. it will be available for K-adult next Fall. And it's free! Super resource!
Our non cte teachers are using it at Duncan! https://t.co/8RIv70Zspf
A7) How has been shown to non-CTE teachers or is it only CTE?
A6b: We have to stop buying into latest buzzword so vendors can create market for their products. STEM topics have always had value!
These convos can start early...we just have to stop listen and make it personal. https://t.co/FZbckTY2GT

Next on the agenda, Why some state leaders don’t have public position on ESAs. What’s the deal Holyfield?
Reading and writing first things we teach should we be teaching science and tech first?
. we've launched to all since August, at all levels of edu, 6th g-adult
Confusing, because it's right there in the acronym...
