Great to see you, here, Fred. You are one of those educators I've followed for some time and learned from you (especially around mathematics education). #bcedchat
Erica. Secondary Math & CS tchr in Burnaby. SFU Master's student. Regional Manager of Microsoft Philanthropies' TEALS (Tech Edu And Literacy in Schls) program. Looking forward to another #bcedchat tonight! :D
Hello... Christine coming to you from Prince George, BC. Math educator, outgoing School Trustee, and Lecturer at UNBC School of Education. Looking forward to tonight's chat. #bcedchat
While face to face time is essential, there are times where asynchronous communication is more convenient! This is when Twitter can be valuable as a Pro-D tool! #bcedchat
A1 as I mentioned in my blog, I know how “isolated” my dad was as a forward thinking principal in the 80s - would’ve been transformational for him to have been able to have more regular connections with like minded radicals other than at conferences #bcedchat
Thanks @brynmw. Going well so far. I love learning and I love finding ways to enhance the learning experience of students. I'll be back soon... POST SNOW. lol. #bcedchat
#bcedchat A1: It is the easiest way for K-post sec educators & parents to meet over concepts of learning. The breadth of experiences, applications & insights is breath-taking! The only boundaries are access. Insights & problem posing from the whole globe! and much more. . .
A1: building community, learning from others, hearing different perspectives and experiences from across BC and the world, have a range of sub-PLNS within my twitter PLNs #bcedchat
#bcedchat A1: I was also isolated for decades in my early career. I'd meet others at a math conference once or twice a year. School PD was often 'directed' & not as useful. Not like #edcamps & #twitter
A1. There's a lot jammed packed into that question. Twitter allows me to be a LEARNER. I love connecting others who provoke my thinking or reinforce it. #bcedchat has been awesome and I hope to connect to other EDU-CHATS this year to build my learning community on Twitter.
Yep. Last trip we shared a BC burger & chicken strips and fries with the awesome @White_Spot honey mustard dip! (BC is for Bacon Cheddar, not just it’s province of origin!) #bcedchat
In reply to
@brynmw, @OlwenCowan, @k_timms, @BCFerries, @White_Spot
I hear ya Lisa. I miss Storify too. Do you know why they have ended their application? As you have heard, Wakelet is #bcedchat's replacement, but Storify offered something different.
A1: twitter as a way to connect to other educators has been amazing. I've met f2f and then connected and met online then to f2f. All about my learning and sharing. #bcedchat
Maybe you can introduce your Ss to Twitter too. Can be a bit overwhelming at first but a great way to build PLNs and get ideas. Perhaps some would be interested in #BCStuTeach! #bcedchat
A1 it's good to find a variety of perspectives all connected to an area of interest, or new curiosity. Can organize around ideas that have resonated #bcedchat

A1. following people on Twitter and having the chance to have chats (like this) have pushed my learning and challenged me to express my thoughts and ideas. #bcedchat
A2 - I love that we can collaborate, discuss, debate, learn from, lean on, grow with and become friends...when I first started I felt like I was island (teaching can be hard) now I am surrounded by amazing people & lucky to call many my friends #bcedchat
#bcedchat A2: Tweetdeck allows me to organize PLN's by hashtag & follow these threads or groups of educators who push my boundaries. It also lets me see the broader scope of education and learning.
A2: I freely admit that I’m partial to those questioning the way things have been done (education-past wasn’t so great for way too many) and wanting to further differentiate and personalize the learning journey of our learners #bcedchat
I agree! I really enjoy attending edcamps and connecting with others on twitter. school pro-ds could be great too but quite often photocopy room conversations are where I learned the most from colleagues at schl ;) #bcedchat
A2: I think being approachable and reciprocal in a virtual sense. It's one thing to continuall tweet and retweet, but it's another to interact. Enjoy the interaction. #bcedchat
A2: open to learning, nudge my thinking, offer personal stories to help me connect, authentic, not coming across as schticky or trying to sell me on something #bcedchat
A2: I look for original content. Outside the box thinking. Humor doesn’t hurt. I also try to get women, POC and other gender identities and locations. And people who will say “hi” and interact. #bcedchat
Great to have you with us! And if you’re planning to be take teacher training, you need to read @TheWeirdTeacher latest book on the T/ST relationship! #bcedchathttps://t.co/1gMUuoPE7v
(Im buying a couple this year for student teachers coming to/near my school)
A2. Hmm... who would I like to add to my Twitter PLN... I love the optimists, the innovators, and those who are willing to try something new. They are willing to make mistakes, learning from them, and make their learning visible. It's all about POSSIBILITIES. #hope#bcedchat
And @jnovakowski38 is great at posting provocative pictures to make me pause & wonder then extrapolate to my levels & students (including my PLNs).
#bcedchat
A2: open to learning, nudge my thinking, offer personal stories to help me connect, authentic, not coming across as schticky or trying to sell me on something #bcedchat
A2: Don't have an opinion about this. I have found that if you are an educator on twitter you are already thinking about education. I have cut down who I am following though as it can get overwhelming. #bcedchat
I too love that it makes me think...when someone pushes me, I will "follow" them I know that sounds creepy if people didn't know what we were talking about...but I want to be pushed and challenged I want to learn and grow as a teacher/student/leader/learner #bcedchat
Love that you look for alternate voices that aren't always heard on social media. I don't look out for these voices, but if you look at those I follow, I think female voices, POC are more prominent than others. Part of the culture of our education systems? #bcedchat
Gotta have a sense of humour! Our jobs too often get too serious - we all have those stories that can’t be unloaded without a trusted relationship (and usually a beverage of varying types) #bcedchat
Using Twitter as part of PLN helps to see other educator's perspectives and points of view. My PLN helps keep me current with what's going on in different educational settings #bcedchat
Q3: We will be having a number of suggestions being made tonight. But randomly looking for educators can be challenging - what ways do you use to broaden your PLN? #bcedchat
I so agree. Twitter removes the labels of our 'roles' and gives us all the opportunity to share our ideas on education. (Hope that students will start to share on chats)> #bcedchat
Gotta have a sense of humour! Our jobs too often get too serious - we all have those stories that can’t be unloaded without a trusted relationship (and usually a beverage of varying types) #bcedchat
Its funny...when I hear people talking in the staff room about an idea a topic or something they have read, it is usually several weeks after we have already done it or read it as a PLN on twitter. Twitter is 24 hour pro-d and 24 real time learning #bcedchat
A2 #bcedchat I was positive people who are willing to do things differently. Ones that see education as a whole and students as individuals. People that are willing to be vulnerable in their own learning and leadership.
A3: I find connecting with those educators that are recommended by those I follow. I also look for those who comment on topics I'm interested in. #bcedchat
It can in many instances. I like how many speakers and authors will interact with tweeps! For example, @thierck@unfoldthesoul and @RosaIsiah are incredibly generous with their time. #bcedchat
In reply to
@OlwenCowan, @thierck, @unfoldthesoul, @RosaIsiah
It is fabulously honest (in a very good way) - as a preview to Q3a in a few weeks his #weirded chat will restart. Great humour and thinking #bcedchat (probably a west coast thing #westcoastbias )
A3. Participate in an edu-chat... like #bcedchat. As mentioned, I'd like to participate in other edu-chats this year. This it taking my Twitter savvy (LOL) and extending it to finding hashtags that resonate with me like #COLchat or #engagechat and remember when they are on.
Q3: We will be having a number of suggestions being made tonight. But randomly looking for educators can be challenging - what ways do you use to broaden your PLN? #bcedchat
#bcedchat I’d love to think they but 1- I’ve been in plenty of chats that ignored newbies, like a little clique. (Just have a private chat then! Don’t tweet it!) and all the recommended books were white male educators. (Who is the black gay woman @weirdteacher who #TLAP?)
#bcedchat A3: I agree with many who use the chats to find those reflective & proflective educators who don't just retweet others but share what they've encountered in their own 'practice' & study & research & lives
A2 those that are inviting and welcoming to the dialogue they are having and eager to share. Look for those that are learning in the digital space. Sharing and commenting, participating. #bcedchat
A3: I find new people to follow on twitter through chats and I also sometimes check the educators I follow who have expertise in a specific area and see who they follow if I am looking to grow my learning around a specific area like coding, maker spaces, etc. #bcedchat
#bcedchat and I don’t automatically accept a doctorate as an authority. I’ve seen some idiots in the program. (Not that all PhDs are idiots. Just that they’re like anyone else!)
Not gonna lie I am just getting started working on my PLN! I'm new here so does anyone have any good suggestions for other tweetchats I should tune in on? #bcedchat
@ChristineYH Jumping in late...Shannon from PG.
A1: I love twitter for professional development and idea sharing. It's convenient, quick & easy. My fave tweeters bring such neat ideas! #BCedchat

A3 if something resonates, dig in. What has the person shared, liked, retweeted over time. Spend some time looking at threads, visit blogs and websites that might be connected #bcedchat

I know my “anchor chats” start with #bcedchat on sunday
Weds is busy with #sblchat every 2nd week and #imaginedchat or #weirded sometimes in competition….
I like “popping in” on some throughout the other days of the week!
A1 @tracyacramer sometimes I catch myself using acronyms with my colleagues such as "DOK" (depth of knowledge) because I've seen it on Twitter then realize that I need to simplify my vocabulary to be understood. #bcedchat
#BCedchat A2: A good tweeter must be innovative in both classroom practice & assessment. Non-confrontational is another good trait, as well as accepting. Of course, English, Drama subjects...& leadership quips are great too.
I got some great momentum via @perfinker and her Walking Curriculum (my classes/schools always to be the most techie….and the most ’back to nature’) #bcedchat
I’ve also encouraged many of my kindy teachers to check out the sharing of @tracyacramer and when people have questions about award assemblies (and how to shift away from them) I always love the thinking of @ChrisWejr#bcedchat
I know, but lets get all our #bcedchat peeps names out there. I can't chose between any of them, Lets follow everyone who puts their voice out there in our chats.

@ChristineYH, @MsVictoriaOlson, @CraigMah, @JanetChowMSc, @Teachinginthe21, @KennethHeadley, @DAliceMarsh, @perfinker, @OlwenCowan
@TheJLV is a US teacher who's written a book called, "This is Not a Test: A New Narrative on Race, Class, and Education." I've not read it yet but it's on my list. There's also the hashtag #educolor which I came across last year.

starting a predictable pattern:
Q5: Going to the wrong/other side of the Rockies….who are other Canadians that we should be seeing if they fit our needs for our PLN? #bcedchat
NOT named @gcouros !!
Agreed. I find this question challenging. My suggestion... follow someone and then look at who they follow. REPEAT. A classic SOCIAL MEDIA SNOWBALL EFFECT. That would be an effective methodology. But I do like who others are recommending. Hence RT. #bcedchat

A4/5... You can also see who's participating in tonight's chat... and previous #bcedchat's. FOLLOW THEM. As mentioned in my previous tweet, follow someone and see who they follow. Or join other edu-chats. There are plenty of good folks out there. You just have to find them.

Agreed! I follow @GruntledChalkie who tweets thoughtful educational insight, Australian politics, women's football (soccer) AND cute alpaca pictures! #bcedchat
#bcedchat A5: I like creating a column on Tweetdeck on something like #assessment or #sbl and seeing who is contributing what. This gives you access to even the big guns
I've found that building my PLN through Twitter has given me many opportunities when I attend conferences to connect with some amazing educators. #bcedchat
Thanks!!! Oops you reminded me that I haven't written about the field trip to Deer Lake Park and Burnaby Art Gallery in June haha!!! But it was awesome!!! #bcedchat

Some PLNs in the USA that I have seen meet up for coffee and educational chat. Neat idea! I think they might be less geographically spread out. #bcedchat
#bcedchat A6: I must admit I have a @cvarsalona column on Tweetdeck because of what she is doing for literacy, digital chapbooks, poetry & more. Very rich source of ideas.
A6. See previous tweets. Same response. Follow someone, then see who they follow. These questions made me realize that TWITTER is the greatest equalizer in the education. It doesn't matter where you come from or what your role is... WE'RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER. #bcedchat
One of my favourite US tweeters and one of the first that I connected with: @RoweRikW I recommend any math teacher to follow him and learn what he is doing with his classes. #bcedchat
@MisterMinor just wrote a book on teaching which I'm about to get. @RozLinder also writes some great books on literacy. I think POC look for books from POC to support the movement, but it's true -- there aren't enough books out there. #bcedchat

A6 we may sometimes tease our US colleagues - but there are some amazing educators doing incredible work. Places like @hightechhigh might get a lot of (justifiable) press - but many ideas came from across the states! (high stakes tests still rough) #bcedchat
#bcedchat A6: You can also find #MTBoS has spawned a list of connected math educators who are transforming ed especially utilizing twitter as the equalizer (thanks @ChristineYH)
A7: Not a twitter piece on asynchronicity, but I use WeChat with my educators I've connected with from China. Wish I could use i withing Twitter, but understand. #bcedchat
#bcedchat A7: I stumbled across some great work from @bashaierk and #MENAchat on tech implementation, imagination, creativity & more so and utilized slow chats because of the time differences but they really pushed me.
A7. I think so. I am also realizing that my limitation is my own (i.e. remembering names, remembering times/days, etc.). I'm more of a conceptual learner. That said, I know that any opportunity to connect with others to challenge or hone your thinking is worthwhile. #bcedchat
@CarlaShalaby has a wonderful book: https://t.co/RvIgdo0jIO
“Troublemakers: Lessons in Freedom from Young Children at School” — great read on schools as sites of freedom and children’s “insistence on being powerful in an institution actively designed to exercise power over them.”

#bcedchat A7: Our twitter PLNs & #bcedchat leads us to blogs, portal sites that we might not have found on our own. Like Steward's Median site, nRich, Illuminations & many great personal blogs
A7, you can be connected 24 hours a day. Sometimes is worthwhile to follow from East to the West, you are learning what each province are dealing with #bcedchat
A6 @cultofpedagogy I've found writes on a broad spectrum and shares great practical ideas and tools & @fastcrayon for school culture, inclusion equity in education #bcedchat
Very interesting. What similarities and differences have you found b/t the two edu systems? Any highlights after interacting w/ Chinese educators? #bcedchat
A7- I really enjoy following @zelfstudie out of Belgium he is doing incredible things in Inquiry, Core Competencies and also SDGs. He creates global projects that are incredibly designed and offer lots of engagement opportunities with the global ed community. #bcedchat
#bcedchat Again this is the power of Tweetdeck columns as you can track the threads back through time and see what is great. Finding life balance is also key or we will spend our lives online
A7, you can be connected 24 hours a day. Sometimes is worthwhile to follow from East to the West, you are learning what each province are dealing with #bcedchat
A8 I have loved how @hadip has helped @codeorg and “hour of code” expand the concept of coding beyond something that happens in basements to something mainstream and cross cultural/socioeconomcs
#bcedchat
A8: I have a personal trainer from England @alexcrockford who does the amazing #Homefit. Through himI connected with @fitwithfrank who gives my gr.1/2 class challenges to do (also a pt from England) and worth checking out. #bcedchat
OH... I see. LOL. I like those who are critical thinkers and those in leadership. I find some of their posts thought provoking or inspirational. @Leadershipfreak is one example. #bcedchat
@ReahnaRobinson is a student who wants to be a music teacher and is trying to jump through the hoops to finish high school. And you’ll just have to follow her to find out more... #bcedchat
In reply to
@brynmw, @ChristineYH, @Younghusband70, @ReahnaRobinson
#bcedchat Instead of trying to create short lists of people to follow, I prefer to create inclusive lists. Here’s one of more than 1000 math specialists I maintain: https://t.co/gKHP5oo3mO
The criteria for inclusion is that one supports math teacher learning in some way.
Q9: We have some great guest mods coming up this year - thinking back to Q1, who is someone in your evolving #PLN that you would like to meet face to face? #bcedchat
Thanks, David, I think this is better, as there are so many educators that I follow and are amazing and helping me learn and grow (I include you on this, obviously). #bcedchat
Q8: endless! Authors -always, scientists, mathematicians, artists, athletes, organizations... my Ss and I tweet whoever we think can take our thinking deeper. #bcedchat
Please join #bcedchat next week on Sunday, September 23rd at 7pm PST for our topic GRADES OR NO GRADES with guest-moderator @dramaqueen4 with #bcedchat Co-Mod @ChristineYH
Great chat tonight with @technolandy Love that we have connected in so many different ways and through different groups. We need to have that @BCFerries#ignite started....#bcedchat
As you are thinking about your #PLN….
