My name is Sara Mason. I'm a student at Elon University in North Carolina. I am majoring in History as well as minoring in geography with the intent to teach #worldgeochat

To follow along, I like to use the search bar and type in #worldgeochat and select “latest”. That will put all chat tweets in chronological order for you. Feel free to answer, respond to others, and retweet! #ExpeditionSchnekser
For those new to Twitter chats, each question will be numbered. When it is posted, share your answer with a Tweet containing A and the number associated with it, your answer, and #worldgeochat. For example: A1 (the answer to Q1)

I am from Virginia Beach, VA and I teach Prek-5 science, technology and integrated global studies--geography is a natural tie in to earth science! #worldgeochat
A1: #worldgeochat is one of the biggest resources for me. But when it comes to resources for my students, I have to use Google Earth, CIA World Factbook, and Dollar Street.
A1: The only resource I have used so far in my studies has been ArcGIS. I love the mapping journals and the layers. I am not that familiar with other resources in the geography realm, which is why I'm here #worldgeochat
A2 Google MyMaps possibilities are endless and I use it but feel like if I went to a dedicated session on it with an expert it would blow my mind #worldgeochat
So awesome! We were plotting where products were on Google My Maps today! So awesome. Many students were surprised they could change the pins and add icons today. #worldgeochat
A2: I could use more PD/resources on the role of women across the world, and also education across the world. In terms of skills, I need to update my Google Earth, and My Maps skills so I can make some truly awesome maps (not basic ones). #worldgeochat#ExpeditionSchnekser
A2: More information on regions but in ONE place that is understandable for middle schoolers. They're very concrete thinkers, and region is one of the most difficult concepts #WorldGeoChat
A2 Anything that makes economics more accessible to junior high students. Government systems for junior high students too would be great as well. #worldgeochat
#MYSTERYSKYPE! We did one with Vietnam today! Very rare opportunity, but so amazing! The kids who sometimes find themselves engaged and not as interested were glued to the screen! #WorldGeoChat
A2. My school is going 1 to 1 with chromebooks next year. I am still way nervous on how to make this work and I am concerned that my district thinks all my kids have internet access at home. #worldgeochat

A3: Guests. I've had Chinese nations, German nationals, etc. come into class and enlighten Texan kiddos about the wonders of the world, straight from the source. :) #worldgeochat
A3: I bought 3 cheap VR headsets on amazon on a whim. Found a European migration VR video my students could go through. So Powerful! I had students in tears. VR Expeditions and field trips are awesome. #worldgeochat
A3 @geteach is a nice way to have students drop in for a bit more organized street view-style experience. I know lots of people have VR experience and I’ve never waxed further into the pool than this #worldgeochat
Tour Builder is fantastic too! I definitely need to use my web cam more for Mystery Skypes and to connect to experts and other classrooms #worldgeochat
A3: Hello Youtube & @NatGeo or @NatGeoEducation videos! I use these to go places. Also that power of place series I shared is good. Our district just got the Google Expeditions VR kit and I can't wait to try that out! #worldgeochat#ExpeditionSchnekser
A4: Prep books for APHUGE, my list is much larger for APUSH and WHAP. Looking at adding some more in a few years, but I am only in my second year for APHUGE. #worldgeochat
A3: I haven't had the chance to test anything in a classroom but I think google street view would be a good start. I'm also interested in learning more about mystery skype since I've never heard of it #worldgeochat
A4. A ton of primary source material b/c they need exposure to the language, syntax, and competing ideas. Train them to be historians instead of test-takers. #worldgeochat

I cannot say enought great things about @Newsela for this! Differentiated reading levels has been a GAME CHANGER for me!
#worldgeochat
(And I'm looking forward to doing more with @listenwiselearn this year too!)
A4 my new school focuses hard on citing textual evidence so I’ve really looked more this year than ever and so far I like the variety https://t.co/Ly5PMtTSVT offers. Tailoring to reading level and subject area #worldgeochat
Yes! We have an awesome international studies program at @Minotstateu and I always ask for speakers! Great for them to get into the classrooms and awesome for us! #jhtweets#worldgeochat

A4: Not sure how many of you have access to @DiscoveryEd but the Social Studies Techbook is a great way to go beyond a traditional textbook... #worldgeochat#depd#denchat
Just found out about @listenwiselearn today at a conference. Already pulled some options for next week. Any suggestions for powerful incorporation? #worldgeochat

A4 The old teachers before us always used Long Walk to Water with the Africa unit. I’ve never read it, any insight? @cheffernan75 seems up your alley just by title... #worldgeochat
A5 I have learned so much from everyone in this chat! I would recommend following all that participate! Also, the #sschat crew is always sharing incredible resources for all social studies teachers! #worldgeochat
I am teaching in now- my students can't wait to read! We are doing one reading day a week until we finish. I connected Hans Rosling's Factfulness to it (classifying income levels of the main characters) since I am in my Econ unit. #worldgeochat
Great list. I also like checking historic sites/resources near the area we're discussing. Look for those out-of-the-way or site-specific places. There are hidden gems there as well. #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat a4: twice a quarter my Ss in Florida pick current events articles for reflection on a theme. Tomorrow it’s harmful algal blooms. Have to learn to be connoisseurs of media/info & recognize stakeholders in issues. Hoping they will figure out how we can take action.
A5 how about some amazing cross curricular follows? @artwithdudgeon is one of the greatest teachers/humans you will meet and who says the art dept. can’t help inspire your SS lesson? #worldgeochat
Sorry. Trying to get caught up. Just got back from awesome trip home (dc). If anyone has kids 8-12 checkout sleep overs in the national archives. Great experience! My daughters learned about indigenous Americans & slept touching the marble encasing the Constitution #worldgeochat
Thank you to everyone at #worldgeochat for an amazingly fast night of ideas! My brain is full, and I sincerely appreciate all to cool resources. Have a great week everybody! Thank you @schnekser for moderating!
Thank you so much everyone, I hope you enjoyed this lightning fast #worldgeochat as much as I did! See you all next week, same time, same place with a new moderator! #ExpeditionSchnekser
I've been so looking forward to this chat. If you haven't checked out More Deadly Than War do yourself and your students a favor and read it ASAP. It is incredible! #worldgeochat
