Hello everyone! My name is Yvette I'm Director/Founder @inspireNewRo New Rochelle, NY So happy to be here tonight. I love Thursday nights and it's not because of TV #g2great
A1. Respect means Ss & Ts have a voice in procedures/tasks in class.
Encourage & welcome Ss suggestions for changes & improvements. T = .5 or less voice each day. Work together!

A1 Respect is much more than a word. It means creating an environment where we FEEL safe, honored, & comfortable in our own skin as humans, not just as learners. #G2Great
I would like to remind each of you that our #BowTieBoys are in grades 7-11 and yet they are totally committed to maximizing the learning and teaching process. We are grateful to them at #G2Great
Cameron Carter from C ๐ O-H-I-O. Second grade teacher and @ncte Elementary Lead Ambassador PUMPED to chat with my friends #BowTieBoys and the #g2great TEAM!! @MisterAMisterA
I would like to remind each of you that our #BowTieBoys are in grades 7-11 and yet they are totally committed to maximizing the learning and teaching process. We are grateful to them at #G2Great

A1 Respect only happens in a mutual process. We can't complain that kids don't respect us if we aren't ready to live and breathe all that means from our side. #G2Great
A1: We are Polite! "Good morning" and "Welcome" are first words every day. I'm polite-say please and thank you and Ss do the same. That's how it should be. #g2great
A1: great ? And so important, I think you earn respect, you donโt just get it because youโre a teacher so building relationships, caring for your students on a bad/good day, getting excited about teaching, joking, laughing, learning from each other #g2great
A1 Respect only happens in a mutual process. We can't complain that kids don't respect us if we aren't ready to live and breathe all that means from our side. #G2Great
#G2Great A1 I think you feel respect as much as see it, the classroom is a community of learners with a shared vision and mission and equal ownership where all voices are heard, all students are seen, and recognized for contributions to the whole
This is SO true! It's one thing to just speak to students with respect. It's just as, if not more, important to listen and act on students' words #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A1 True respect will rise up into the learning air we breathe. It's not just what we believe but how we put our beliefs into action within a respect-driven culture. #G2Great
A1 Respect is shown best through relationships and through student teacher rapport. If students cant hold a conversation with you and vise versa, there cant be much respect #g2great#BowTieBoys
A2. Transparency - having a syllabus, weekly updates, due dates in advance and spending time building common expectations. Always input into what worked/ didn't in unit. School: "No Zero policy." "Rework policy."
@TheSammer88#BowTieBoys#G2Great
#G2Great A1 I think you feel respect as much as see it, the classroom is a community of learners with a shared vision and mission and equal ownership where all voices are heard, all students are seen, and recognized for contributions to the whole
A2 Transparency begins within each of us & reflects our willingness to be joyfully present in the learning experience - just as we ask kids to do. #G2Great
A1: I respect that the writers in my room often know digital tools better than I do. they have areas of interest that I know little about. I'm not afraid to learn from them. #g2great
Couldnโt agree more! So many Ts talk about respect as kids having to โearn itโ or in platitudes. As my friend @suzrolander always says โHuman is Humanโ ... mutual respect, co-construction of learning, etc. #g2great
A1 Respect only happens in a mutual process. We can't complain that kids don't respect us if we aren't ready to live and breathe all that means from our side. #G2Great
A2: Always be OPEN and HONEST with your kiddos. EXPRESS how you feel. Model "I feel" statements each and every day! Students observe you more than you can possibly think!! #g2great
Transparency can be maintained through staying in touch with students, therefore developing rapport. Connections should always be kept. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A1: Respect, like trust, goes both ways. If the teacher doesn't respect the student how is the student supposed to respect the teacher? Teachers and students should have mutual respect. #g2great#BowTieBoys
Love this! The opportunity to teach a teacher feels like it comes by so rarely, but every time it does, it's so valuable. Such a rapport building moment, even if only as one to look back on and laugh about. Relationships and memories matter! #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A1: I respect that the writers in my room often know digital tools better than I do. they have areas of interest that I know little about. I'm not afraid to learn from them. #g2great
A1: It's the age-old quote that never loses its truth: no students cares what you know until they know that you care. I spend the first couple of weeks building environment and showing the students that I genuinely care about them as individuals. Content comes second #g2great
A2 I think the best way to maintain transparency is letting kids know anything about the class, and it matters just as much for the student, making sure the teacher knows about all your thoughts about the class and the way it is taught #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A2 I include the Ts and Ss I work with in everything. If a decision is being made I get input first so I can speak for whom it will impact the most. Iโve got nothing to hide. Being clear with every interaction so there is no room for interpretation. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A2:transparency - showing/documenting what we are/have learned. Embracing mistakes made and how we can grow from them. Honoring the risks Ss take. #g2great
Totally agree! Nobody is perfect - it's so much easier to relate to teachers when they're up front about that. It puts us all on the same plane. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
#G2Great
A2 We ask Sts to bring their TRUE selves to the learning table so why don't we have the same SELF expectation? It ought to be a two-way proposition! #G2Great
A2 Transparency looks like Ts making it clear that everyone in the learning community is a learner AND a teacher. Great Ts know they go in every day ready to learn from, with, and alongside their Ss as well as being ready to deliver instruction that transforms. #g2great
A2: Modeling process and participating in the processes I expect them to participate in. I share my reading life, my writing life, my struggles, my inadequacies, my failed attempts, and the wisdom I have gained from each experience. #g2great
A2: transparency to me is admitting mistakes, giving expectations, having high standards for all, encouraging growth and risks, trying new things...education shouldnโt be a gotcha thing, just learning and growing! #g2great
It depends on the student and the action! I am clear and transparent in different ways! If a student is upset, I try to make a connection to feel and convey empathy! โค๏ธ #g2great
#g2great
A2: Teachers should be honest and not keep anything from the students, relationships are built on honesty and that is how a classroom should be formed. A teacher should be open with their students and not afraid to hide anything #g2great
This is good. It's typically pretty easy to sniff out a teacher who is trying to fake their way through a class, just like it's easy to find when a student is doing the same. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A2 You can't fake authenticity & that's a big part of transparency - being who we ARE (not propose to be). That requires us to be our true selves! #G2Great
Yes! I share my writing with my Ss, my thought process, and ask for their feedback. It's important for them to see us as writers too and our process. #g2great
A2: Hi. Paul W. Hankins here from southern Indiana. First, Happy International Women's Day to the #g2great leadership team and participants tonight. I really believe in "web transparency." If you want to find me in SM spaces, search my name. You'll find me at "PaulWHankins."
A2: @kdredger always taught us back in grad school to be transparent about our pedagogies. There is no need to be the "teacher behind the curtain." If we are, then we are doing TO students instead of WITH them. Let's lift up students as leaders and hear their voices. #g2great

A2 I'm transparent by being vulnerable. My students know that I don't know it all because I tell them. I also tell them that we're working on their strengths and not their weaknesses. We have to build our students up. They are so used to being told how they're struggling #g2great
A2 Transparency looks like Ts making it clear that everyone in the learning community is a learner AND a teacher. Great Ts know they go in every day ready to learn from, with, and alongside their Ss as well as being ready to deliver instruction that transforms. #g2great
#G2Great A2 educators put much pressure on ourselves to be superhuman, mistake proof but when we allow our own struggles as well humor & quirks to be known to Ss thatโs when we build bridges, we become a fellow learner, relatable vs the expert at the front of the room judging
A3: Use entrance & exit slips sometimes for barometer:
What's going well?
What needs adjusted?
What needs dumped?
Provide opportunity to propose another option to meet the standard. OR you have 3 tests that day - let's move ours!
@dawsonunger#BowTieBoys#G2Great
A2 I attempt to be my truest self with my students. We begin each class with sharing updates and celebrations in our own lives. I am sure to participate in this sharing too so students have a better glimpse of me as a person, not just their teacher. #g2great
Mary from Tulsa, but then everyone knows that after three years of weekly chats! So happy to be here with my co moderators Fran, Jenn and Amy @franmcveigh@hayhurst3@brennanamy#BowTieBoys
Let's see... they are daily....Today's was messing up a due date for a reading assignment that no one was ready to discuss, so I said "oops" and switched gears : ) #g2great
It's ALWAYS about the CONNECTIONS and RELATIONSHIPS you build WITH you students! Just like adults, kids will NOT learn from people they don't like. It's SIMPLE. ๐๐ผ #g2great
A3 The kids who challenge have the most to teach me (same in my seminars with challenging educators). I consider it my mission to engage these kids! #G2Great
A2 Transparency is also articulating your commitment to kids to KNOW your content. It's the willingness to be agile when things go awry and humble enough to admit you are not the keeper of all the knowledge. Kids watch us grow as learners. Power in modeling that, too. #g2great
It's ALWAYS about the CONNECTIONS and RELATIONSHIPS you build WITH you students! Just like adults, kids will NOT learn from people they don't like. It's SIMPLE. ๐๐ผ #g2great
Sometimes sharing our lives is great--like when my phone rang in class in January and my students knew it meant my granddaughter was being born. But when my father died, I couldn't talk, write, or think about it. I kept it close. #G2great
A2: I am most transparent in my sharing that I really don't like having conversations around points and percentages. Or rubrics. I'll tell you what I am looking for by way of assessment, but I will not barter/bargain for numbers and letters. I want authentic learning. #g2great
A3: Good question! It's tough. Relationships are key. Asking questions (about life, not school) surrounding topics of interest, friends, other classes. Then find something they can do with that. I like projects where Ss can create or solve a problem. #g2great
A3 The best strategy find out what Ss are interested in and create space for those interests to grow. Notice their effort, be interested, and always extend the invitation to learn. #g2great
Thats amazing, I think that if students are shown how that the teacher is making mistakes too, then it allows them to be less ashamed of their own mistakes #g2great#BowTieBoys
Look for interest and target them. Get to know your Ss and find out what they want to explore. The engagement comes. A killer poem from a quiet kid comes from connection #g2great
A3 itโs always going to come back to relationships. Canโt do anything without saying hi to every kid everyday, finding something positive to say to everyone everyday!#g2great
Q3 Relationship building is key for all Ss, but especially for those who don't typically put effort in. Lots of conversations and getting to know those Ss, finding a way to engage them. #g2great
A3 There's an underlying reason for EVERYTHING our learners do. It's my job to figure it out and find a common ground to plant a seed for engaged learning. #G2Great
Showing that type of vulnerability is so commendable. As a student, it's hard to break out of your personal protective shell, especially in writing. When a T is upfront & willing to share important stuff about them, I have more confidence to do the same. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A3 Make sure that the student has some kind of motivation -- a reward for trying hard. Students will almost always try their best if there is a reward involved in the end. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A3: I always used humor...sometimes they were like bad โdad jokesโ but the kids knew I was trying to connect w them. I asked about their day, which seems simple but I canโt tell you how many times a student would say, youโre the only person whoโs asked me that today #g2great
Thatโs such a great question Nihar but I think it shows in everything they do when fake is leading the way. I just donโt think itโs possible to pretend to be REAL if weโre really paying attention! #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A3. "Choice" seems to always be the answer to everything, but if you get to choose something about your learning, you're more apt to feel accountable to it. #g2great
A3: get the right book in their hands; the right book makes all of the difference!! And just being nice to kids makes a difference. I ask - even the ones who don't care for me or school - how's your day? what's going on? #G2Great
A3 When students don't put forth effort I like to figure out what the root cause is. So many times Ts say, "student is just lazy."but many times there's something else going on, you just have to take the time to figure it out. It's not always easy but it's well worth it. #g2great
This can be tough. I lost my step-in mother and my biological mother both at the beginning of a school day. When kids asked why I was still in the room, I told them (earnestly), you were my family before the call. And you are now. We're here. Where we are supposed to be. #g2great
A3 try to bring in choice to their work. That can spark engagement and itโs really an easy thing to do. Give up all the control. I struggle with measuring effort, it looks different bc all Ss are different. #g2great#BowTieBoys but always try to bring in interests!
A3: Set the learning environment up for them to maintain hope. If they have hope they will not give up. Then I build a trusting relationship. Grades donโt motivevate some kids, but they are motivated by people they connect with. #g2great
A3: Talk is a crucial piece of engaging students, especially the hard to reach ones. Sitting beside them and talking about life, their goals, the things they love. I want to know them. Hear them. And let them know that I am there to support, guide, encourage, and nudge. #g2great
A3 Tap into their interests above all else. Spend a lot of extra time with them. Talk about non-school ideas. See what their future or immediate goals are. Show them I CARE. #G2Great
Yes! I share my writing with my Ss, my thought process, and ask for their feedback. It's important for them to see us as writers too and our process. #g2great
#G2Great A3 you have to be willing to get to know Ss outside of school, chances are that an outside interest can easily sneak itโs way into the literature you share and writing experiences you provide, every S should feel as though the lesson was tailored just for them
A3: My passion is real--I love reading and writing. But my students know I care more about them than what I'm teaching. I invite them to lunch, bring them cookies... have my Corgi visit class. Listen. Help. #g2great
(Speaking as a parent, and reminded of my own school experience)
A3) Everyone needs meaning behind making an effort. Let them focus on a purpose that's important to them -- bet there's a way to integrate it. #G2Great
A2: I am most transparent in my sharing that I really don't like having conversations around points and percentages. Or rubrics. I'll tell you what I am looking for by way of assessment, but I will not barter/bargain for numbers and letters. I want authentic learning. #g2great
A3: Make sure everyone is engaged, create fun activities where students won't get bored and can communicate with each other and most importantly have fun #g2great
And we NEVER have all the answers. I think some TS are afraid to admit that but quite honestly I consider it a badge of honor. No such thing as an All-Knowing EXPERT (except in their own mind) #G2Great
A3 Daily kidwatching! Being present in learning moments allows us to understand learners beyond numerical score. We learn much with EYES WIDE OPEN! #G2Great
What a wonderful idea! And then let's actually leave it up all year and not start packing up in the middle of May. Sends the wrong vibes to the kiddos! #g2great
G3: The teachers should change their classroom "vibe" around. Try to make it better appealing to the students. The students voice is also very important. Let them have a say in what goes on in the classroom and listen to their feedback. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A3: I do not have an answer for every student. Some resist every way I try to help. But I do not give up. I work to earn their trust every day. #g2great
I completely agree! Teachers must spend lots of time getting to know their students outside of the classroom. It helps build meaningful relationships and students are more willing to trust you. #g2great
And then you have to be willing to do something with the feedback! I loved getting feedback from students even if it was hard to hear sometimes...like would you stop talking so we can get started? Ha! #g2great#chattycathy
A4. Be mindful of other courses - not all due on same day. Requires communication w/ Ss & Ts. Many opportunities to show learning. Not just single summative grade. Many small tasks along the way to check understanding.
@jackmichael776#BowTieBoys#G2Great
Look for interest and target them. Get to know your Ss and find out what they want to explore. The engagement comes. A killer poem from a quiet kid comes from connection #g2great
I agree! And in order to do so, we must get to know our kids. They are not numbers. They are human beings and all humans have stories. When we learn those stories, we are better able to connect with and engage our students. #G2Great
The right book makes all the difference! And then having us there to work side by side and show them WHY the story matters specifically for THEM. Rock on. #g2great
A4: always gave them time to get started on projects, homework of any kind in class, that way they could ask questions, talk to each other, not feel like they didnโt know what to do #g2great
We blame their peers for making kids try to fit in -- but the structure of school has traditionally REWARDED kids for fitting in. I'm encouraged by new approaches. #G2Great
A2 We ask Sts to bring their TRUE selves to the learning table so why don't we have the same SELF expectation? It ought to be a two-way proposition! #G2Great
A4 Projects can be administered regularly, but they have to be with choice. The more options a student has, the more stress-free their path will be. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A3 We employ a continuous improvement model in our district and periodically (sometimes weekly) Ts ask Ss for feedback on engagement/learning strategies that maximize their learning. We get amazing comments from our Ss. They know what they need. #g2great
A3: Find your "in." Really. I mean this more than metaphor. If you know the kid's INterest(s), you have found an "in." If you are in to it, I can read and know something in to it. I grow from this new "knowing." We grow from my wanting to know. #g2great
A3: I try to get to know the students as individuals. If a student is really not connecting with class, I invite them in for lunch, get to know them and try to weave their interests into our daily objectives. Goes a long way. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
denise gudwin here in seattle. having a @SeattleRdgCounc meeting at my house this afternoon so i'm trying to sneak in some posts. SO wanted to be a part of this whole discussion! #g2great
A4: I like timeline guides-chunks of projects due at certain times. I should approach a S who is obviously stressed and plan with him/her. I find planning together helps (T and Ss). "How much could we get done by Friday? What do you need to do that?" #g2great
A3 Student voice and choice motivated like nothing else. Tell them the objectives and facilitate them creating the learning and products. #G2Great#personalization#voiceandchoice
A4: Teachers have to communicate with each other about tests, quizzes, and projects. No student will be stress free if they have 3 projects to complete and study for 2 tests. #g2great
A4 I've never seen any learner at any age thrive when stress is the fuel. We must ensure that what we assign/test has real value (both to us and to kids) #G2Great
We blame their peers for making kids try to fit in -- but the structure of school has traditionally REWARDED kids for fitting in. I'm encouraged by new approaches. #G2Great
A2 We ask Sts to bring their TRUE selves to the learning table so why don't we have the same SELF expectation? It ought to be a two-way proposition! #G2Great
A4 Every assignment I create is intentional and purposeful. I always consider student feedback as I tweak assignments each semester. For instance, my students told me they like to turn in their work for feedback along the way rather than at the end so this is what we do. #g2great
Yes! This is true for us all and we cannot presume to know what will interest Ss nor should we. It ought to be about discovery and curiosity and innovation. This is what fuels the 21st Century #G2Great
I'm a big fan of avoiding doling out punishments. The underlying reasons for a student's actions are easier to mitigate after communication. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A3 There's an underlying reason for EVERYTHING our learners do. It's my job to figure it out and find a common ground to plant a seed for engaged learning. #G2Great
A4: We work in class every day--time to read and time to write--so they can get support and get the work done. I adjust deadlines. I make myself available at lunch, after school. #g2great
A4: For my special ed students, it's about scaffolding tasks, setting reasonable deadlines, and providing support! (and helping Ps provide support at home!) #g2great
@jackmichael776 just looked across the room at me and said "is it true Mrs. Kittle brings her Corgi to class? Can I be in that class?" Listen and help is right! #g2great
As it should be. I canโt imagine why we would ever ask students to do something that will not ultimately benefit them as learners (and humans). I love that Katie #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A4 Every assignment I create is intentional and purposeful. I always consider student feedback as I tweak assignments each semester. For instance, my students told me they like to turn in their work for feedback along the way rather than at the end so this is what we do. #g2great
A4: Due dates are flexible and tests always have retests available. I am not in the business of one and done. It is about the journey, not a moment. #G2Great
Make sure to give students a possible due date, and allow them to negotiate on what they can fit into their schedule and you can always set up optional extra work for the Ss #g2great#BowTieBoys
#G2Great
Great point! Choice of topics is key to engagement. Students can learn a process and technique with any topic. My economics teacher let me do a paper on Paganini and I learned tons about research! #G2Great still remember it.
A4 We have to show Ss that they're more than a grade. I believe that Sts should have the chance to make up their work/grade if it wasn't there best. Sometimes things at home get in the way. I like to show my Ss that they matter & if they want to they can retake anything #g2great
#G2Great A4 allowing for diverse products and means by which Ss can demonstrate their level of understanding allows me to assess knowledge but also helps me learn more about them as a person and learner whether via music, art, essay understanding can be reflected many ways
I was just reading about Peter Elbow's position on reading from a "liking" frame of reader mind. And this was well before "liking" was a thing, you know. That first read. Before feedback. Read for what you can like. #g2great
Absolutely agree, Andy! Fake can be spotted so much easier with students, just because students grow up listening to a variety of feedback. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A3 Find out what Ss do in their life outside school and put that to work in your classroom. Bring students' funds of knowledge into the learning community. It's a lot of work, but incredibly important. #g2great
A4 Every assignment I create is intentional and purposeful. I always consider student feedback as I tweak assignments each semester. For instance, my students told me they like to turn in their work for feedback along the way rather than at the end so this is what we do. #g2great
A4: I don't put grades on draft writing so that Ss focus on the real work of revising (and not fixing for a grade increase). Ss also give input on the assessment scale used--rubric, performance standard, etc. I always use strengths-focused language when giving feedback. #g2great
I always connect with projects when I'm able to choose. A part of me resents any work I do when I'm assigned a topic (especially when it has nothing to do with my interests). #G2Great#BowTieBoys
Such a great statement. I hear the statement too often, โBut we need a grade.โ which usually means that the grades are just place holders in a book. If they donโt INFORM our practices Iโm not sure what is the point! #G2Great#BowTieBoys

I completely agree. If a student knows they can do better, why not give them the opportunity. It goes a long way at building meaningful relationships too #g2great
A5. Projects/ papers have checklists and at least a midpoint check in or sooner for T and S self-assessment. Are we on track? Love use of peer/partner feedback. Also S self-reflection as part of grade. "-- was strength; worked hard on --"
@TMandanis#BowTieBoys#G2Great
Yes! Maddening! Why do we have to have a certain number of grades in a certain number of weeks? First 3 weeks of school should be NO GRADES. Get into the swing of things and learn first, then grades come later. Drives me crazy! #g2great

#G2Great A4 assign it and complete it yourself first and think through the lens of your own child, if you or your child wouldnโt find it worthy of time or it would not actually inform next steps then find an alternative
A5 Yes I think they DO need to match but with that said we must take a closer look to honestly determine if OUR timelines are realistic from our side and theirs #G2Great
A4: I give students a full month to work on assignments. That way they learn time management along with the content AND have the opportunity to constantly conference their writing. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
Sometimes I feel like I have a thousand unmanageable things going on and although it all ends up working out, I wish teachers would be more accommodating/helpful in giving me strategies of balancing/budgeting time #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A4: I like timeline guides-chunks of projects due at certain times. I should approach a S who is obviously stressed and plan with him/her. I find planning together helps (T and Ss). "How much could we get done by Friday? What do you need to do that?" #g2great
I love that, why do we give out work that doesn't actually benefit our students, we have only so much time with our students lets make it meaningful #g2great#BowTieBoys
And yet much of the time if I ask, โTell me about those students.โ I get a blank look. WE canโt reduce a students to a grade and think that we know who they are as learners! #G2Great#bowTieBoys

If the grade doesn't INFORM our practice it really doesn't serve a purpose, but this idea isn't generally accepted. Teachers, admin, students, and parents need to shift their mindsets on grading and its purpose. #g2great
Teachers should definitely make sure that their grading timelines mirror that of a student's working timeline, as Ts should put a lot of thought into grading student papers. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
We blame their peers for making kids try to fit in -- but the structure of school has traditionally REWARDED kids for fitting in. I'm encouraged by new approaches. #G2Great

A4 Love! @pennykittle i loved giving up my duty free lunchtime a few times a week (my choice) to invite small groups of Ss into my room to have lunch w/ me. I could learn sooo much about them in that setting. i'd play music & bring drinks. great learning conversations. #G2Great
A4: We work in class every day--time to read and time to write--so they can get support and get the work done. I adjust deadlines. I make myself available at lunch, after school. #g2great
I really do believe that deadlines are important but also on a case-by-case basis. We need to meet students where they are and always make ourselves available to them. #g2great
I always connect with projects when I'm able to choose. A part of me resents any work I do when I'm assigned a topic (especially when it has nothing to do with my interests). #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A5: it should be timely feedback! Some nights that meant I had no life but I wanted students to see relevance in feedback I gave them&they wouldnโt see that 3 weeks later&how in the world could that guide instruction? Make the feedback clear so they donโt have to search! #g2great
A5 There are some limits that canโt be changed (semesters, for one), and sometimesa project/paper simply loses meaning if itโs not turned in by a certain time. But a choice of dates within a week or so makes sense.#g2great
A5 hmm interesting question!! Never thought of this. If youโre putting in 3 hours of work and I give it 3 minutes of grading that doesnโt seem too fair does it? I have no answer for this, thought provoking though!! #g2great#BowTieBoys
Q4 I don't do any homework. Everything happens while I have the students and we can all work together. Often I find the students ask to take things home to work more. #G2Great
This is super smart. Nobody at any age likes busy work - if something has a purpose, and that purpose is known, it is so much easier to get behind #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A4 Every assignment I create is intentional and purposeful. I always consider student feedback as I tweak assignments each semester. For instance, my students told me they like to turn in their work for feedback along the way rather than at the end so this is what we do. #g2great
A5: YES! Ts should be just as accountable as Ss. If it does need a grade, quick turnaround time by Ts gives Ss needed feedback and timely answers. #g2great
We build entry statements, midpoint reflections, and I-Search narratives into our extended writing projects. I want that narrative wrap-around and dive in to and through the process. Product can fall apart, but process can show how it was informed (or not sometimes). #g2great
A4 I do informal assessments frequently. Exit cards, surveys, checklists, and discussions. I can monitor for understanding throughout the learning process. #G2Great
A5 We have to be cognizant that when kids go to different classes, EVERY teacher is assigning projects/papers etc. This can create insurmountable demands. #G2Great
A5: It's not fair for a student to be rushed to finish an assignment, only for the teacher to take a week to finally grade that same one. If a student has to finish a project in a mere hour, the teacher should have it graded for the student by the end of the day #g2great
A4 Read a great article this weekend about a separate space on a campus for kids to attend a class on mindfulness. "This is a โMind Your Mindโ class for 15- to 18-year-olds, meant to reduce stress and promote mental health."https://t.co/7QxaBTF08y#g2great
A5 I am a strong advocate for teachers grading in the same timeline as the students deadline was for the assignment. Doing this builds a stronger sense of respect from the students to the teacher and it also lowers stress for the Ss #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A5: my teachers grading is very sporadic. At times it would be done the night after and others it will take weeks. Grades should be updated as soon as possible, because not knowing your grade is very stressful and is very irritating.
#G2Great#BowTieBoys
...and a lack of respect for them. It sends a message that school is a place where the teacher is an authority figure and students must comply. How will they learn to create, problem solve, have a voice, take a stand, & become passionate engaged learners and citizens? #G2Great
Planning is a struggle for a lot of my students with special needs. Executive functioning is a skill many other Ss struggle with as well. This includes self-assessment, prioritizing, and planning #g2great
A5: Timeline for grading depends on where students are at in the process. Presentations? Immediate feedback. Literally confer with kids in the hall asking them to share how they felt first. Essays? After the up draft when they have revised the piece first. #g2great
#g2great yes.... too much focus on grades - it's gotta be about learning -- if a S fails a test and asks to show a teacher that NOW they can do the skill --- how dare the teacher say no... isn't that why we became educators? for kids to LEARN? #g2great
Well said - if we are expecting them to write, we need to get them the current feedback so they know where they are in their writing journeys and can progress from there! #g2great
This is super smart. Nobody at any age likes busy work - if something has a purpose, and that purpose is known, it is so much easier to get behind #G2Great#BowTieBoys

A5: I think many teachers resist grading, so we procrastinate. I force myself to get work back within days--and sometimes I have to bribe myself with chocolate. #g2great
And alleviates any potential that there could be an opportunity to learn. Actually the longer you separate the actual learning experiences and the feedback (not that grades are true feedback) the more you stand to lose #BowTieBoys#G2Great

#G2Great#BowTieBoys
Sam, I agree that teachers need to do a lot more teaching of strategies. Teachers often expect students to do things that they have no clue how to actually accomplish. Students need an arsenal of life skill strategies #g2great
A5 Some Ts must meet school-driven grading timelines. If it's unrealistic then we have a clear responsibility to reconsider the tasks so they are manageable #G2Great
A4. My choice option board. out of 9 choices, they choose 5. give it to them on monday, due on friday. when and where Ss do what - all their choice. works wonders. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A6 Iโm not in favor of banning cell phones. Theyโre great tools for texting about Reading, texting between two characters, using them for research. Itโs studentsโ tool in 21st century. #G2Great#TheBowtieBoys
I think every student--like any other person--believes that any work that they are doing right now is "hard." It's all "hard." But, we can all work together to make the work meaningful. Relevant. Now, even if hard, there is a want to do it. "We'll do it for Johnny, man!" #g2great
Does this mean how quickly students get the grade back? I like some forgiveness going both ways on this. It can be tough with lots of students #g2great
A6. Classrooms that are 1:1 do not need phones. Non 1:1 classrooms, use as devices when helpful / when promote learning. poll everywhere - formative
Flipgrid - R or W partners.
@AEichenlaub729#BowTieBoys#G2Great
Timely, love that. It's not helpful if I give you feedback on something you did a month ago. You're right, it won't guide instruction if it's not done in a timely fashion #g2great
I love that focus on PURPOSE. Unless we have a good WHY for using the phonesโฆ well not sure that weโre using them for the right reasons. #G2Great#BowTieBoys

A6 I have seen Ts do both AMAZING & AWFUL things w/cell phones. It's part of kids' lives and why not use them in purposeful ways as a powerful instructional tool? #G2Great
Yes! So many ways to use phones, technology! Iโm learning more and more about UDL and ways students can access materials AEM, love it and there are so many options! #readwithyourears#g2great
Sam, I agree that teachers need to do a lot more teaching of strategies. Teachers often expect students to do things that they have no clue how to actually accomplish. Students need an arsenal of life skill strategies #g2great
A4 Checking in with Ss to get a clear picture of the workload in their other classes gives Ts a way to plan assignments/projects/quizzes that don't overburden. Sometimes simple formative assessments can be just as "telling" in regard to student learning as summative #g2great
A5: I stay at school ALL night two weeks per quarter and just grade, grade, grade, grade so that all students get timely feedback on their analyses and in-class essays. All other conferencing is in person and via e-mail throughout. May sound miserable, but saves me... #g2great
And we stand to learn more from rethinking our mistakes than the do from getting it right in the first place. Renegotiating our thinking is powerful! #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A6 Ss have their daily lives at their top priorities. With cell phones in school, I think it should be okay for Ss to check their phones every once in a while, and also participate in educating activities with their phones. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A6 Ts and Ss can both do good and bad with phones in the classroom, for example, doing most phone games in class just results in kids texting or playing games, but i also write 1000x better when im listening to music than when im in silent #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A6 I'd like to think that phones can be useful, but it takes a very skilled teacher to model acceptable use and follow through. If all of our Ss have one (equitable) then I like to incorporate using them. Ex, I love #booksnaps#g2great
One and done doesn't help anyone. If it takes a couple tries to finally get something, why does it matter? The focus shouldn't be on the speed, but on the quality. Completely agree! #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A4: Due dates are flexible and tests always have retests available. I am not in the business of one and done. It is about the journey, not a moment. #G2Great
A6 my cell phone is connected to me 24/7 I use it all the time for my life. I want Ss and Ts alike to be able to use it as a tool for learning and connecting. Of course there would need to be some guidelines but I think theyโre amazing. #g2great#BowTieBoys
We should be teaching how to use the tools they have and be able to moderate their usage and their distractibility! How else will they prepare for real life?
#g2great
A6 I love George Couros' post: Hope is not a Strategy. Maybe the real question is if we're using them w/ purposeful intent https://t.co/DSja3nqIfo#G2Great
Chocolate is becoming rare in the world. Did you see NEWSELA about this, @pennykittle ? I'm so sad! I'll have to start hoarding chocolate for future accomplishments/bribes. #g2great
A6: Yes, there are great ways to use phones and all technology, but not every day. Not all the time. I have students who are truly addicted to distraction. It is a struggle. #g2great
I think there is an enormous difference between grades and feedback. I read and give immediate feedback. Getting marks updated is another matter. My kids know I don't put in a number until I have to. They can always check in #G2Great
Or let the students choose...Iโm on my phone right now, I can tweet the quickest on this and I havenโt paid any attention to any other app! I donโt have time for that! #g2great
Sam, you hit the nail on the head. Teachers need to educate based on all of your needs, not just your academic needs. Students need so much more than that, including social-emotional skills #g2great
I think there is an enormous difference between grades and feedback. I read and give immediate feedback. Getting marks updated is another matter. My kids know I don't put in a number until I have to. They can always check in #G2Great
A6. I hear all these thoughts. But I also think it's nice and important for students to have a phone-free space. The older the students, I believe the more important this becomes. #g2great#LitBankStreet
Absolutely! We must meet you where you are. If that means allowing you to google from your phone rather than a laptop so be it. Iโm more proficient on phone than computer. #g2great#bowtieboys
I think there is an enormous difference between grades and feedback. I read and give immediate feedback. Getting marks updated is another matter. My kids know I don't put in a number until I have to. They can always check in #G2Great
I favor negotiating deadlines with students. These can be with individuals or the entire class. When due dates for assignments address parts it helps students budget time. #G2Great#TheBowtieBoys
A6 I find it interesting that our lives have changed but we insist on shutting the door to incorporate LIFE meaningfully into our teaching (key word meaningfully) #G2Great
A6: I think there are a lot of assumptions about students and phones. But, we'll often say, "You teach us how to treat you every day." This can be the same phrase with the addition of "as you hold and use your device in your work." Assess tool and how it is used by room. #g2great
A6: Cellphones should defiantly be allowed in the classroom. Teachers should take advantage of the use of cellphones, and should use them to help the students learn.
#G2Great#BowTieBoys
A7. Know the Ss. Show up at their events. Self reflection and assessment as part of grade. Look for match w/ T thinking. Rewrite S learning targets together!
@NKandarpa#BowTieBoys#G2Great
A6: I cannot stand phones in the room. It's such a pain. All Ss have them, and good Ts try to use them to benefit Ss, but there seems to be pushback and behavior issues attached to this. My opinion, but I wish I could go back in time and teach again before cell phones.#g2great
...and a lack of respect for them. It sends a message that school is a place where the teacher is an authority figure and students must comply. How will they learn to create, problem solve, have a voice, take a stand, & become passionate engaged learners and citizens? #G2Great
A6) SmartPhones are the most amazing new tool for students in generations. Banning them is incomprehensible. So is not using the opportunity to teach and learn. Model good use, digital citizenship, and all the learning and connections phones have to offer. #G2Great
Yes, who are we to say that the student should know something by x date. If they need more time to learn we need to be flexible and give them the time they need. Learning doesn't happen on a Ts time. #g2great Why do Ts believe it's one and done?
A17 Rapport begins DAY 1! I'm a huge advocate for being at the door to greet kids as they enter the room. Relationships are formed for better/worse in seconds! #G2Great
A6 its a struggleโI see so many students truly unable to communicate. And it almost makes me sad that Iโll observe classrooms where kids donโt gather at the door before lunch; they all just get on phones.#g2great
A6: How many of us our on our phones right now using them as a powerful learning tool. I am having my students run a mini-NCTE at the end of the year - and they must be tweeting out what they are learning in their own sessions #G2Great#BowTieBoys
What do you need to do that?" #g2great
I think we ASSUME kids canโt handle it and donโt even try to set the stage so they will. Iโve seen incredible uses for cell phones in the learning process! #G2Great#bowtieboys

A6 We need to be helping students understand how to use tech effectively, especially the tech in their pockets. Lots of ways to teach resources through apps and empathy through online conversations. I say more phone use than most teachers like... #g2great
I agree, I believe Teachers struggle with this because it takes a long time to build a community of learners that follow the rules, but when done correctly it's a beautiful thing. Example, #booksnaps my favorite #g2great
#G2Great A6 I think most solutions come back balance and purpose, used purposefully and with intention and balanced with face to face/ group collaboration it can be positive
Show of hands for anyone in our #G2Great tonight who had the same commitment to the teaching-learning process as our #BowTieBoys in HIGH SCHOOL. You canโt see me but my hands are DOWN by my sides big time. So impressed!!
That's a great argument for getting rid of grade levels.... now you move to the next arbitrary level of learning whether you are ready or not... #g2great
A6: I recommend Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in the Digital Age by MIT professor Sherry Turkle. She studies how phones limit deep conversation. We have to learn to both use them and set them aside. #g2great
A17 Rapport begins DAY 1! I'm a huge advocate for being at the door to greet kids as they enter the room. Relationships are formed for better/worse in seconds! #G2Great
A6: ...I try to teach Ss how powerful their phones can be. I model how I use mine - and show them how (my social media for example) are powerful networking tools. Let's help them create positive digital footprints! #G2Great#BowTieBoys
I also believe we can help create that balance for students...we always have technology but talking with each other in real life is just as important. #g2great
A6 We need to be helping students understand how to use tech effectively, especially the tech in their pockets. Lots of ways to teach resources through apps and empathy through online conversations. I say more phone use than most teachers like... #g2great
A7 Sts SHOULD be involved in the assessment process. John Hattie says self-evaluation is a HUGE achievement factor so why don't we acknowledge it? #G2Great
No direction. No connection to learning. Just assume that they will be used. We have to set the stage for using them in learning and know WHY (kids and teachers) we are using them and HOW #G2Great#BowTieBoys
And we stand to learn more from rethinking our mistakes than the do from getting it right in the first place. Renegotiating our thinking is powerful! #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A5) Wish we didn't have to debate the best way to grade vs. the best way to learn. But as long as grades stick around, focus on the formative. Grade along the way. #G2Great
I also believe we can help create that balance for students...we always have technology but talking with each other in real life is just as important. #g2great
A6 We need to be helping students understand how to use tech effectively, especially the tech in their pockets. Lots of ways to teach resources through apps and empathy through online conversations. I say more phone use than most teachers like... #g2great
I completely agree. The problem is that teachers don't know how to teach Ss how to use phones appropriately so they chose to ban them altogether. Ts need to take the time to build a community of learners that know how & when to use the phone. #g2great
See also Manoush Zomodori's BORED AND BRILLIANT for a comment on cellphone and SMART device usage as potential barriers to creativity and connectivity and communications. #g2great
A7: students definitely have choice: when they write analyses, they pick the songs and poems based on skills they've learned in class. They design their projects. They choose their books within lit circles. Need to figure out getting them involved on the grading end #G2Great
A7 We stand to learn more when we're part of the process so it's critical that we give kids a role in their own learning. That includes assessment/grading! #G2Great
.@MisterMinor does a fabulous job w/technology use in the classroom. Uses it as a tool. Trains kids, โshields up, shields down.โ It helps to level the playing field when ss can google something and get background knowledge quickly. #G2Great#LitBankStreet
Awful things phones are used for in school (and outside of it): bullying, sexually explicit photos sent to someone without permission, cruelty. #G2great
Show of hands for anyone in our #G2Great tonight who had the same commitment to the teaching-learning process as our #BowTieBoys in HIGH SCHOOL. You canโt see me but my hands are DOWN by my sides big time. So impressed!!
A8. Choices for seating - work by self - quiet; work with partner - chat zone. Let Ss identify what they need.
Tables. Partners. Pods. Plan for talk/collaborative work.
No desks. No rows.
@MisterAMisterA#BowTieBoys#G2Great
A7 Rapport is key in students, the best way to develop rapport is to grow trust between the student and teacher, the students should always be involved in grading and assesment #g2great#BowTieBoys
School shouldn't work like that, but it seems like it's one of those school mindsets, it's always been that way. So hard to change this mindset in Teachers, Stakeholders, and Parents #g2great
A8 First we acknowledge that its not @ furniture & room arrangement but how that design can positively impact our professional purpose. It has to be a match! #G2Great
Q7 Ss are always part of the process. We conference as they write. When Ss finish a piece of writing, they self-assess. They answer a few questions ("rubric" in question form) about their writing and I answer the same questions. #g2great
A 7 students should always be involved in assessment. They can create rubrics, self-evaluate their work along with citing evidence. Very important to develop independence with learning. #G2Great#TheBowtieBoys
#g2great yes.... too much focus on grades - it's gotta be about learning -- if a S fails a test and asks to show a teacher that NOW they can do the skill --- how dare the teacher say no... isn't that why we became educators? for kids to LEARN? #g2great
Hello! Honestly, just talking thru what I have to do & other things that impact my ability to do so (even if they may not actually) is reassuring. It allows me to feel more in control/mentally organized. Rapport w/ Ts who talk like this w/ me is always good #G2Great#BowTieBoys

I pass the question to someone who has a classroom this year, but in the library we have a HUGE space to move around, comfy chairs and tables, colorful displays, etc. #g2great
Self evaluation is WAY high on John Hatties list of factors that influence achievementโฆ and yet we continue to ignore it in far too many classrooms! #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A 7 students should always be involved in assessment. They can create rubrics, self-evaluate their work along with citing evidence. Very important to develop independence with learning. #G2Great#TheBowtieBoys
Couldn't be more correct! When some Ts see my couches or coffee machines, they think it is a gimmick. Mood lights and rugs don't teach kids. WE teach kids - and they teach US. It's just about building what we're about to share together from the very beginning. #g2great
Student created rubrics are an amazing and incredibly effective tool in classrooms, but why do you think many classrooms are reluctant to include them? #G2Great#BowTieBoys
Show of hands for anyone in our #G2Great tonight who had the same commitment to the teaching-learning process as our #BowTieBoys in HIGH SCHOOL. You canโt see me but my hands are DOWN by my sides big time. So impressed!!
A8: questions can be asked at any time, encourage collaboration, give examples of how the work can be done, encourage creativity, talk, communicate, be their cheerleader! #g2great
I don't think I experienced that enough in K-12 school. I remember not seeking feedback in college and failing a paper. I asked myself afterward, why did I assume I knew what I was doing? #G2Great
A8: If i had a classroom, the classroom would be warm and inviting to the students. As the students walk in, they should be able to tell what they are going to do. Most importantly the student should be stress free when entering.
#G2Great#BowTieBoys
A8: Make the classroom FUN, Ss would much rather sit in a nice sunny classroom with superhero posters, then in a bland one. Decorate the walls with posters of things the students enjoy, make the classroom feel like their bedroom and then they will feel relaxed #g2great

a7 Building a community is a process, it's starts day 1 & cont. throughout the yr. Grades are "chosen"by students because they have a choice in how they will demonstrate learning. #g2great
Here are some Elbow notes on responding to student writing that invites the student to respond back to the teacher. Note the presence of shared narrative around and through the process. https://t.co/tI4yVc90ZZ#g2great
In my school they want standard rubrics that everyone uses. I ignore them and have students help define criteria based on studying models of what we're making, but it is hard to be a rebel. Especially for new teachers. #G2Great#Bowtieboys
A8 It's not MY class but OURS so this means engaging kids in classroom design to fit both their learning needs AND our instructional WHY. Both are CRITICAL. #G2Great
A8 Students can collaborate in teams, like to have a quiet area for Reading and writing. Flexibility that responds to what students are doing is so important. #G2Great#TheBowtieBoys
