#ALedchat is a weekly chat on Twitter about education topics. It is held each Monday from 9-10pmCST. While the discussion on #ALedchat continues on Twitter well beyond our weekly one-hour chat session, this platform affords us the opportunity to extend, expand and share the conversation with an even greater audience. Educators from across the state of Alabama, and the world, can come here to find encouragement, support, resources, professional growth opportunities and advice, while providing the same to their colleagues.

A2: Maintaining a welcoming and inviting campus where students, teachers, and parents feel valued and part of the organization. I am proud that @EdgewoodElem values the people over the programs and it shows through our success. #ALedchat

A2 by openly not knowing the answers to all the questions I ask ~ planned and otherwise. Seeking to solve problems or find answers that can’t be “Googled” #ALedchat
A2: What you see is what you get. There is no secret to what I do- I am transparent. My goal is to be involved and in classrooms. Inspect what you expect and keep building relationships in my new position. #aledchat
A1 my purpose and passion is to serve my staff and students so they find success. Secure resources, make a copy, lend a hand, ask reflective questions. Just offer help where it’s needed #aledchat
A2: I mess up a lot, which is why I’ve surrounded myself with amazing people who support me and our overall vision. They know how perfectly imperfect I am. 😊 #ALedchat
A1 - my passion is to provide the best learning environmental students can have. To do this I strive daily to show both my teachers and students they do matter and that they are valued and important to me as a leader! I also try to listen to them and use their ideas! #ALedchat
A2: You look well-rested in your picture; this is because you do what is best for students regardless. Leaders that do this sleep very well at night :) #ALedchat

Call them passion projects, genius hours, maker sessions I strive to integrate this process to meet individuals where they are at. Someday I’ll figure it al out & call it a curriculum. #aledchat
A2: What you see is what you get. There is no secret to what I do- I am transparent. My goal is to be involved and in classrooms. Inspect what you expect and keep building relationships in my new position. #aledchat
A2 The prerequisite for showing your authentic self is time. The more time I spend with our Ts, Ss, & Ps, the more I have the opportunity to show them my genuine desire to support our school's success. Showing authenticity helps build trust among our team #aledchat
Honesty is the best policy! I am clear and realistic about what I can and cannot do. If there is something I cannot do, I find the answer or ask for help. This year, I have started a Robotics program, coached soccer, and been there for my students. #aledchat#UMedTech#edl577um
Anticipating a stressful year, I made the goal at the beginning to allow myself some grace. It's tough as a perfectionist, but mistakes are inevitable and I have to be okay with asking for help and accepting my best. #ALEdchat#UMEdTech

A3: I've always been a bit of a maverick in the classroom and in leadership. I am who I am, and that's worked for me. I embrace the fact that I can always do more and be more. Hmm.. I've stayed put. :) #ALedchat
A2: Maintaining a welcoming and inviting campus where students, teachers, and parents feel valued and part of the organization. I am proud that @EdgewoodElem values the people over the programs and it shows through our success. #ALedchat
A2: This year I have stopped trying to control situations. I observe, ask purposeful questions, listen, and seek to understand rather than control. #AlEdChat#UMedTech#EDL577UM
A2: I’ve always believed in relationships. However, this year I’ve made a vow to stay more positive, both personally and professionally. Positivity is like a muscle and needs to be worked. It’s powerful stuff when you wake up feeling blessed and express gratitude #aledchat
A2 - By greeting both students and teachers with a smile every morning! I set out to learn all 1180 students name at my school and I am almost there.I also set out to leave positivehand written to my teachers doing great things and I am able to do at least one a day! #ALedchat
A2: I mess up a lot, which is why I’ve surrounded myself with amazing people who support me and our overall vision. They know how perfectly imperfect I am. 😊 #ALedchat
Love the helping however/whenver piece here, Anthony. To fully engage in servant leadership, we have to be ready to support any day at any time #aledchat
A2 No hidden agenda. I wanted my staff to trust me, know their work is incredibly important to me, & that I support them however I can -providing resources and professional learning to help them grow. So far promise kept #aledchat
A2: Maintaining a welcoming and inviting campus where students, teachers, and parents feel valued and part of the organization. I am proud that @EdgewoodElem values the people over the programs and it shows through our success. #ALedchat

A3. I think I alluded to this a little in A2, but if tackle each day working for the betterment of the students, putting the students first, the hard things become easier. #aledchat
A3: Your expectations are essential to excellence. We cannot just say them, we have to model them. Nothing that is worth the investment is easy! #aledchat
Purposeful questions can go a long way and is a key when providing feedback and coaching. A good question can serve a far deeper person then great advice. #ALedchat
A3: It's important that we help students value and explore their own productive struggles. In teaching 6-12th grade students, I made it a point to keep communication ongoing. Weekly student conferences and two-way (Them/Me) writing in journals are a couple examples. #ALedchat
A3: Words to live by...."Many hands make light work" and "A difficult conversation doesn't get any easier just because time elapses". Like a bank account, relational bank accounts exist; got to make deposits in order to make withdrawals. #ALedchat
A3: By being willing to have those hard conversations, especially with parents. By being honest and transparent and sharing with others the mistakes I’ve made personally. Our goal is always to help, not create learned helplessness. #ALedchat
A3: In my content area of WH, this can often be the case. I address the sensitivity and explain not all topics are easy and “good” but necessary for discussion. Gotta take the good w/ the not so good. Then I proceed as I normally would. #AlEdChat
Q3. Having relationships with your students as a foundation, and attitude is key when dealing with a difficult topic. Set the tone for the lesson and be firm in your expectations and stick to them. #ALedchat
As a current sufferer of perfectionism, I salute your transparency. I have turned my vision toward excellence. Fake perfection is a gilded facade over decay and lies. Rotten wood won’t stand. #Strive4Excellence#ALedchat
Anticipating a stressful year, I made the goal at the beginning to allow myself some grace. It's tough as a perfectionist, but mistakes are inevitable and I have to be okay with asking for help and accepting my best. #ALEdchat#UMEdTech
He fails to mention that he will be the co-moderator of next week's #ALedchat when we dive into "Student Assessment". @ezigbo_ is one of the most dynamic leaders I have had the opportunity to work with. #ALedchat
A3 Your professional purpose often connects to your personal purpose. Team members should SEE your expectations, not just hear you SAY them repeatedly. Your communication should align with your demonstration. #aledchat
A3: A strong moral imperative helps provide the courage for difficult conversations. I do not like confrontation of any kind. But I can’t live with myself if I ignore something that hurts kids - dramatically, incrementally, or even incidentally. Right trumps comfort. #aledchat
A2: This year I have stopped trying to control situations. I observe, ask purposeful questions, listen, and seek to understand rather than control. #AlEdChat#UMedTech#EDL577UM
A3: By asking questions, "What does the evidence show? What did you expect to see? How is the outcome different from what you expected? What would could have changed the outcome? What will you change next time?" #AlEdChat#UMedTech#EDL577UM
A3 backtrack and scaffold as needed. Do not underestimate building on a common thread or theme. There are always connections within solid content. #ALedchat
Q3. Having relationships with your students as a foundation, and attitude is key when dealing with a difficult topic. Set the tone for the lesson and be firm in your expectations and stick to them. #ALedchat
A3 Your professional purpose often connects to your personal purpose. Team members should SEE your expectations, not just hear you SAY them repeatedly. Your communication should align with your demonstration. #aledchat
A3 Productive Struggle, staying positive in all situations & staying with the path toward a collective vision. Modeling everyday.. high expectations & student success as the goal. #ALedchat
A3 - I expect nothing from my students and teachers or any of my other staff members that I am not willing to do myself! So go out and do and they will follow if they see you care! #ALedchat
A1) Creating spaces, for children to wonder, room for them to explore, areas for multiple types of learning, spaces that allow me to fall to the fringes of their learning. #aledchat
He fails to mention that he will be the co-moderator of next week's #ALedchat when we dive into "Student Assessment". @ezigbo_ is one of the most dynamic leaders I have had the opportunity to work with. #ALedchat
A3 It can be easy to get distracted by the unexpected, but it’s important to remain focused. It prevents that overwhelmed feeling, elminates miscommunication and allows us to accomplish more. Intentionality leads to productivity #aledchat
Great point! I would say asking you to speak from a platform of expertise about assessment would be like asking Nick to speak from a platform of expertise about football #ALedchat#theGOAT
He fails to mention that he will be the co-moderator of next week's #ALedchat when we dive into "Student Assessment". @ezigbo_ is one of the most dynamic leaders I have had the opportunity to work with. #ALedchat
A4. Over the past year, we have set our goal and strategic planned towards it. MS changed the baseline for accountability points. We set a NEW goal and strategic planned. Each obstacle, each change, we will make NEW goals and keep working. We will never give up. #aledchat
A4: I HATE to lose. I will do something a hundred times to get it right. I feel the same abt academic initiatives or issues. We will not fail- we cannot fail. We have too much to lose! #aledchat
A4: I’ve learned over the last year that reflecting out loud on failure opens doors. It takes humility, but the encouragement and supportI get fuels me forward. #ALedchat
Value, reward and celebrate the process right along with the finish. Once we pass the test it’s just kind over. So don’t let the test be the goal 👀#ALedchat
A4 perseverance is key for my teachers, students and myself we have changed expectations with adding AP courses while doing away with honors courses, everyone has had to stay the course and persevere #ALedchat
A4 - by pushing onward even if I fail and not letting that failure define me but rather using it to help refine me! Always keeping a positive outlook and a smile! #ALedchat
Thanks for the chat. Have to jump out early tonight. You all have a great week and remember to put kids first and build and strengthen relationships every chance you get. #ALedchat
A4: When something fails, acknowledge the failure, ask for input from others and try again. Embracing failure encourages others to take risks because they feel they won't be judged by you. #AlEdChat#UMedTech#EDL577UM
You're definitely throwing tough questions out there this week! Perseverance can be difficult when the bad just keeps coming. If I hope others are resilient, I strive to be an example! #ALEdchat#UMEdTech
A4:) Perseverance is our golden calling card. I offer up problems of the classroom to the kids for solving; I ask what they think, tell them what I think, and then maybe we sit on it awhile. When I demonstrate perseverance, I teach perseverance. #ALedchat
A4: Live out the belief that not only is failure an option, it is the best teacher. Falling is only permanent if I decide not to get up. Board certification hardwired reflection into my brain. “Why did that fail” is more valuable than unexamined success. #aledchat
A4: think we fall into a trap of the cliché responses of “mistakes are good!” We can say all that but it’s becoming white noise. Instead, the power comes in teachable moments, usually 1 on 1. If a student struggles and you don’t give up on them-that’s real grit #aledchat
A3: By asking questions, "What does the evidence show? What did you expect to see? How is the outcome different from what you expected? What would could have changed the outcome? What will you change next time?" #AlEdChat#UMedTech#EDL577UM
A4: Show that we continue to persevere even when the odds seem against us. Winston Churchill said, "Success is not final; failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts." #aledchat#UMedTech#EDL577UM
A4 Astute leaders interpret failure as an opportunity to learn, question, & apply lessons learned to new situations. We are charged to frame failures as circumstances that allow us to engage in collaborative reflection and increase our team's capacity for success #aledchat
We also work in a general climate that punishes a failure to measure up and values getting things right the first time. The massive irony is that that’s NOT how life works. I didn’t walk or ride a bike or multiply two digit numbers on my first try. #aledchat
A4 Learning is not being afraid to make mistakes & learning each time to reach the goal. Creating learning cultures in the classroom, cultivating risk takers, who are not afraid is an imperative #ALedchat
A4: I am totally transparent about my own struggles & roadblocks w/ other leaders. Even as a teacher, I often shared my writing and poetry drafts with students so they could see me push through them (often offering advice along the way). Encouraged them to do the same. #ALedchat
A5. Allow staff to a have a say in the goals and strategic planning of the school. Working in a silo hinders our potential. Increase accountability and buy in by including others in the decision making. #aledchat
A4: This week is #NatlEshipWeek We incorporate entrepreneurial skills through #PBLs which hits so many life-skills necessary for Ss as they prepare for their future careers or CREATE their own careers! We model grit and perseverance by how we tackle each day. #ALedchat
A5: Check the temp of the school daily; you do this by talking with Ss, Ts, and Ps. It is important that we understand the daily health to gauge an overall understanding of the organization. #ALedchat
Q4 I think finding examples to share with your students from your own experiences. Students want to connect with you as their teacher. I really like seeing teachers incorporate growth mindset mini-lessons in the classroom when time allows! Students love these. #AlEdChat
A5 - this is hard to do, but you have to build them with teachers and students that are natural leaders that have the same vision as you to make your/their school the best it can be! Allowing them a voice they are more out to help grow your vision as the school leader! #ALedchat
A5: Others must see it done. Create a guiding coalition in the school as the lead model. And then consistently communicate what this group does. Can’t change the thinking to get the behavior. Have to change the behavior to change the thinking. #aledchat
Love the differentiation between defining and refining here, Drew. Important that we engage in purposeful reflection about learning from the failure and soliciting our team's thoughts on ways to get better together #aledchat
A5: Know each other. Teams are built on trust. Trust is built on evidence. Teams aren’t created by fiat; they are developed. If you want a strong collaborative team, seek to know your peers. Profile tests, social events, time together. #aledchat
A5: Just as we form collaborative groups in the classroom, we can do the same for adults. Knowing your people will help the groups thrive because they can share their strengths and learn from others to grow in some areas. #ALedchat
A5: I think team members need to reflect and report their strengths as a team member. Collaborative teams need to include Ts with a variety skills/strengths. Once teams are formed, job embedded meeting times & norms are a must. #AlEdChat#UMedTech#EDL577UM
A5:) Collaborative teams stay that way with people willing to see the world in new ways. If I embody and show empathy and forgiveness, I have a good chance of teaching my kids how to ‘be willing,’ & how to consider a different perspective. #ALedchat
A5: Mutual trust, freedom to think outside the box (and even make mistakes), capitalizing on individual strengths, and words/acts of affirmation. #ALedchat
A5: People are more likely to be invested when they feel they have a voice and that ALL are important. Good leaders help everyone on the team play their position well, or they move them where they can be successful. #ALedchat
I believe that too but every now and again, life punches me in my mouth and makes me answrrthd question, “is it worth it?” Life askedme this evening and I answered yes, today. I need courage #JustForToday#ALedchat
I recommend Emergenetics. It’s an inventory of THINKING preferences. Has been very helpful in providing insight into peers I’ve worked with for years. https://t.co/Tls73OBchZ#aledchat
A6: As a leader, this one can be difficult, especially since it is hard not to take things personally, but rising above the temptation to speak instead of listen. #ALedchat
I believe that too but every now and again, life punches me in my mouth and makes me answrrthd question, “is it worth it?” Life askedme this evening and I answered yes, today. I need courage #JustForToday#ALedchat
A6. What if we encouraged meaningful disagreements? If we all agreed, our thinking isn’t being pushed. However, if we can disagree and discuss, our students ultimately benefit. I always think of the scene in Lean On Me between the principal and superintendent. #aledchat
A6: You do not silence those voices you do not agree with. Bring all options to the table. Collectively you decide the best option for the situation. Often this generates a better solution or plan than you could have reached alone. #WeNotMe#aledchat
A6 - some of the best ideas come from disagreements talked out, but you have to remember when having these conversations that we are working for what is best for the students of the build not the adults! When students are put first everyone eventually wins! #ALedchat
A5: Others must see it done. Create a guiding coalition in the school as the lead model. And then consistently communicate what this group does. Can’t change the thinking to get the behavior. Have to change the behavior to change the thinking. #aledchat
A6 I would say for everyone to feel heard is difficult but we must listen when those around us speak, hear their opinions, concerns, and suggestions and explore them when we can #ALedchat
A6: Listen twice as much as we talk. Also, we need to make other feel comfortable enough to share and value others opinions and perspectives. #aledchat#UMedTech#EDL577UM
A6: As the leader of the group, you can always ask, "Why do you feel that way?" or "Tell me more about what you are thinking." Continue to probe and look for common ground among group members. #AlEdChat#UMedTech#EDL577UM
A6: I find disagreements and "critical friends" are the first steps to real change. If everyone says, "Great idea!" all the time, true innovation is lost. It can take time to help teams understand that.
#ALedchat
A6: Actually (literally) listen. Too often members of the team NEVER have to opportunity to speak. “My door is always open” (but I’m booked solid) and “Does anyone have feedback or questions” (to share in front of everyone) don’t count. #aledchat
A6: Agree to disagree. That may be the most challenging thing w/ 9th graders—they believe the louder they get the more convincing he/she is.
Sometime I turn a timer on to let the S know times up! #ALedchat
A5:) Collaborative teams stay that way with people willing to see the world in new ways. If I embody and show empathy and forgiveness, I have a good chance of teaching my kids how to ‘be willing,’ & how to consider a different perspective. #ALedchat
A6: By listening with the intention of hearing them. Not just waiting until they are finished speaking so you can talk. Many times we have a response ready before others finish, or even before they begin! #ALedchat
If you hold power, refuse to wield it alone. Insist on receiving meaningful review, input, and direction before making ALL (non-emergency) decisions that have a broad impact. #aledchat
In order to create a-ha’s, someone has to have a different truth. A-ha’s often mean that you have taken someone from one truth to a higher truth and that means changing of beliefs. #ALedchat
A6: I find disagreements and "critical friends" are the first steps to real change. If everyone says, "Great idea!" all the time, true innovation is lost. It can take time to help teams understand that.
#ALedchat
A7: My biggest mistakes are when I judge others for how they handle a situation. I have had to learn that different is not wrong. My pace is not the pace of others and my beliefs are not always the beliefs of others- neither is right it wrong- just different. #aledchat
In Linking Leadership to Student Learning the authors assert that giving (real) influence to others does not diminish the influence of school and district admin. Collective leadership leads to strong student outcomes that individual leadership. #aledchat
A7: Mistakes are great opportunities to try again—latest mistake would probably be not explaining material as well as I could/should. Ss tell me I often go too fast! #ALedchat
That’s deep but power is often like that ring from the Hobbit. #PavedWithGoodIntentions takes a special breed to share power or a goal bigger than yourself #ALedchat
If you hold power, refuse to wield it alone. Insist on receiving meaningful review, input, and direction before making ALL (non-emergency) decisions that have a broad impact. #aledchat
A6 Listening to Understand, people want to be heard, but we need to also model skillful/reflective conversation. We also need to create norms for leadership teams, process is agreed upon #ALedchat
A7:) The last mistake I celebrated was today, when I accidentally sent my resume to every open position in the state. I shared this with peers and we laughed and laughed. My frequent foibles are the stuff of great comradeship. #ALedchat
A7: I have made many mistakes and I am certain I will make more in the future. Mistakes are learning tools...I OWN my mistake, improve upon it, move on, and do better in the future. #aledchat#UMedTech#EDL577UM
A7 whew mistakes and celebrating them not sure I am there but I am willing to accept and learn from them. I try my best everyday to make all decisions with my students in mind #ALedchat
A7: I botched an attempt at humor in an email. Offended a colleague & friend very badly. Ate crow. Was forgiven. But only after berating myself all night for stupid mistake. Shared my mistake in multiple settings. Let it always be said that I make NO claim to perfection #aledchat
FA Hard thing to do is to have community disagreements and say what needs to be said at the table. Have seen way too many meetings after the meeting. I try to leave it all@at the table and not contribute to the post meeting, behind the scene conversations #aledchat
FQ Do Unto Others... We must always be professional & respectful. Building a culture of growth demands collaborative relationships, you can't build this without trust. #ALedchat
A7 - I fail on a daily basis to complete my daily to do list because I always allow myself to get side tracked by spending extra time watching great things taking place in a class! I always celebrate this with a hand written to the T and a smile on my face #aledchat
FA: YES! YES! YES! I am honest to a fault..we cannot get anywhere upon improving each other and our students by tiptoeing around the issues. Let's put it out there and come up with viable solutions so that we are really making a change! #IMNOTAYESMAN#aledchat#UMedTech#EDL577UM
Thanks so much for joining us on #ALedchat tonight! I cherish the moments of learning that we share every monday night. My responsibilities have changed, but not my heart for learning. #ALedchat is the best PLN on the planet. #YouMakeMeBetter & #FCSLearn does every day
A7: I pushed into the rooms of some reluctant teachers. They were resentful at first & each visit was unpleasant. However, as I continued to show up and support rather than criticize, attitudes & instructional practices changed. #AlEdChat#UMedTech#EDL577UM
A7: Not speaking up when I knew I should (I know that surprises those of you who know me). I can't say I celebrated it, but I can say I used the disappointment in myself to fuel my resolve to speak louder next time. #ALedchat
