#K12ArtChat is an #ArtsEd chat that happens every Thurs 8:30 pm CST founded by #TeamGrundler @ArtGuy76 & @GrundlerArt & share Ss' art on Fridays via #FabArtsFri.
Hi! I'm Amanda from Party in the Art Room. I am so excited to be here with you. I'm down here in Mississippi. We are wondering if we will get any ice or snow tonight. Take a minute to introduce yourself: Where are you from? What is your specialty? Anything else? #k12artchat
A1: Speaking/Listebing standards so often are left behind yet are such a natural way to integrate in all the new arts standards at all grade levels #K12ArtChat
A1 Very. I developed an approach to help students authentically engage art that was built around the #CCSS-speaking and listening & ELA standards. Proves arts are academic and provides an excellent way for Ss of all ages to think about and discuss art meaningfully #K12ArtChat
A2 they basically provide a vehicle for students to express themselves effectively and be part of a conversation where hey can ultimately learn more about themselves and the world. Builds confidence and maturity #k12artchat
A2 Teaching Ss how 2 listen & exchange ideas effectively is so important. The arts foster joy & connection & are perfect for launching meaningful conversations. The arts help us comprehend our own lives-exploring and sharing ideas w/others helps grow our understanding #K12ArtChat
A2: S/L offers us all opportunities to communicate and reflect simultaneously and in multi-modalities. That's so needed in a time when shouting seems to get the most attention. #K12ArtChat
A2 would be super hard if you didn't have much background knowledge on these standards. So, I'm going to jump in here...I want them to be able to communicate with each other and work together to solve artistic problems. So, I often pair a S/L standard...(1 of 2) #k12artchat
A1- speaking & listening are skills we build upon, from Day 1 of school, thru group projects that help to evolve 'a class' into a 'community of learners'. From strangers at the beginning of school to being friends who are active in each other's learning 😁#k12artchat
A2 Great Arts education helps students learn to effectively share ideas. Discussing art meaningfully and purposefully helps students learn this-helps them see different ways to communicate. #K12ArtChat
A2 like "Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions and carry out assigned roles." as we discuss a work of art and I help them set parameters for their discussions. It really helps them focus on the art AND they are learning how to communicate at the same time. (2 of 2) #k12artchat
A2- they emphasize skills that our students are going to have to use moving forward in every facet of public, private, and professional life #K12ArtChat
Q3 (Consider this standard for this question...maybe it will help: Pose and respond to specific questions by making comments that contribute to the discussion and elaborate on the remarks of others.) #k12artchat
A2 also important from a well-being point of view - we all want/need to be heard. We communicate in a range of over, subtle, verbal and non-verbal ways. #K12ArtChat
A3 Standards should be used to guide thinking, the development of lesson objectives, highlight needs... but then we work w pedagogical approaches that leverage relationships. #K12ArtChat
A3 It’s like a chain. Ss can’t just formulate their thoughts ahead of time they have to connect them to what someone else has said. This in itself is a skill and like all new brain activity builds new pathways which of course helps with art #k12artchat

A3: I walked into a G2 classroom last year and a writing station had various famous works of art as prompts. Would have been cool to see if activity extended into speaking and listening opp. Not many means of constructed open expression anymore. #k12artchat 😟
A3 The Arts are totally underutilized as a means to teach academic concepts/skills. The arts foster the meaningful cognition that is necessary to perform well academically. Discussing Visual texts can help ALL Ss engage many state standards-Below is a simple argument: #K12ArtChat
A3, part II
3rd graders responded to art in non fiction picture book on MLK, jr. Then I let them hear his voice and see the actual statues represented in book. Kids were in awe. Good convo. Special moment! #k12artchat
A4: *Discussing essential questions during the ideation process before beginning of a project. *Reviewing & discussing sketches before starting a work. *Group critic analyzing and reflecting on the process after a work is complete. #k12artchat
A3- speaking/listening and visual art standards/skills should flow back and forth in class naturally. Responding/discussing process/products. Using s&l standards to foster concept development and respect of differing opinions. #K12ArtChat
A3: Respond to questions about works of art - the standard can guide planning for an exploration of art. Great teaching is crafting great questions #k12ArtChat
A4 writing artist statements, writing reflections on their work regularly even though these are written they help develop Ss thoughts so when it comes time for them to share verbally they have their thoughts already formulated. #k12artchat

A3 Use this simple visual from The Art of Comprehension to help students discuss visual texts. It can also be used by #ELA teachersto discuss written text. It’s simple but effective. Easily applied to fine arts and illustration #K12ArtChat
A4 I really like to use sentence frames any time we are having a class discussion. This gives the students who need it support. When I look at the artwork I see..., I think that this artwork is about..., this artwork reminds me of... #k12artchat

A4- collaborative learning opportunities . As working together will naturally incorporate the S&l standards/skills. Giving students oops to share reasoning behind creative choices between ideation&planning steps.#k12artchat
Arts provide entry points not just for topics but for the higher order cognition necessary for academic success. Cross-curricular needs to be less about content and more about cognition. #K12ArtChat
A6- providing authentic opportunities to build skills in the area. Shouldn't feel out of place or like an arbitrary add on to the art content and curriculum #K12ArtChat
#k12artchat A6 Artists often don't want to be the center of attention but they have a lot to say. The art work often is the passageway to advance the verbal/ listening skills- confidence.
A5 the student swill hopefully be more successful at whatever they are trying to accomplish. Better planning, creative problem solving. They more@they are talking and listening to others the more effective they will be. #k12artchat
Then the past 2 days, I started introducing my Hamilton, Poem lesson. working w/ 4th gr clsrm Ts. Started w/ Artful Think. Using John Trumbull artwork. #K12ArtChat
A3- Imagine an Art Class where students come in, get to work & the teacher says nothing to them. How are students to know what to do next, or if they are doing a good job, or how to get improve? High quality assessed feedback = higher standards of art work #k12artchat
A6 Discussing art helps us comprehend our lives. Don’t just learn about the art make sure students learn from the art and through the art. This is how conversation will soar and voices will be empowered. Make the art personal so it can suppprt student dreams. #K12ArtChat
A6: The most important thing about using art to address S/L standards is: Ss need to learn how to communicate effectively in all subjects/areas - just do it! #K12ArtChat#elachat
Lots of rich connections and ideas tonight, friends. Thanks so much for your generous sharing! And I bow to you, Amanda - great topic! #K12ArtChathttps://t.co/OCvQwdwEHN
A6 art is awesome. fun and engaging. It accesses another level of human expression that can’t always be communicated in words. People interpret art differently and it’s a window into their own mind and life. Helps us build deeper relationships and bond with others #k12artchat

Thanks for another great chat. Love being connected to@this wonderful group of educators. Great topic. Great discussion. Cheers. The arts matter. Let’s Make sure everyone know it! Keep up the inspiring work! @AKoonlaba@GrundlerArt@susanrileyphoto@Artguy76#K12ArtChat
@AKoonlaba thanks for a great chat and a great topic. Has helped me generate more ideas for my teaching goals this year. What types of pd opportunities do you like to participate in? #k12artchat
At least if the standards are implemented WELL they lead to this. Too often I think the standard is being taught instead of just hit through the process of doing meaningful, engaging, exploratory work. #k12artchat
A6 I think the most important consideration for me is that talking isn't bad. The need for social interaction is human. We can harness that for deeper levels of learning in art. #k12artchat
Yes, I know many art Ts do not want to teach ELA standards, but the fact is that you DO teach it- in any subject! Make it authentic and meaningful for Ss to dive deeper into art they are viewing and creating. #k12artchat#elachat
