#miched Archive
The #michED chat is a grassroots effort dedicated to giving teachers, students, and parents across Michigan a bigger voice in the conversation about education in our state. We welcome all voices through a variety of projects, media, and social networking. We’re trying to address educational issues through apolitical conversation, spreading ideas and stories of success from Michigan classrooms across the state, and helping teachers and students regain the courage to connect and demonstrate that schools in Michigan are creating amazing opportunities for learning. We want the face and voice of education in Michigan to be a mural of shared experiences and positive examples of connected learning.

Excited to talk about tonight on with my favorite person from Michigan
And we love connecting beyond the Mitten state!
hi Heather. Great to see you.

Starr from NY - HS English teacher and coach, co-author of Hacking Homework with the lovely https://t.co/oTFsagBwwS
Apologizing for my slow responses in advance. Tweeting from my phone. Not sure why Internet is down.
Matt McC, Director of Innovation at Schoolcraft Community Schools, interested in tonight's topic!
Good evening! Rachelle from St. Clair (not the Shores). Sec. Instruction & PD Supervisor for . Wind is picking up!
Matt 4th grade from Mattawan
Greetings Joe from St. Joe, just finished up some Math Boxes - what's the topic again? :)
Jessica Smith, Royal Oak Biology & Algebra teacher. Just was talking HW w/ a colleague today, can't wait to hear more!
Ashley Shier from Michigan. Student teaching in a 2nd grade class. Eastern Michigan University.
Love seeing pre-service Ts on !!!
Todd checking in from Warren. Helping my 12 yo with his homework... what are we hacking tonight?
Ann Smart from Adrian. EdTech at Jackson ISD. Just finished up some really amazing spelling homework…insert eye roll.
I just got back from P/T conferences... I'm FIRED UP about homework.
Hi Matt. Thanks for being here tonight. .
Welcome Jessica! Have you joined chat previously?
sounds like perfect timing for the therapy that can be!
Q1: What are some reasons teachers give homework?
Hi Joe. Talking Homework tonight.
Gillian Judson from Vancouver BC--interested in the topic!
Hi jessica. Thanks for joining
Glad you joined us Gillian - thanks for adding to our conversation
great to see you both leading tonight
Ashley Shier from Gibraltar. Student teaching 2nd grade in Woodhaven. Eastern Michigan University
A1: Ts give HW because they have to or because they feel that it will teach students to learn responsibility or bc parents expect it
A1: Because that is what teachers have always done…right?
A1: Mandated by district/curriculum, bc it was done to them, they believe it will reinforce what was done in class
A1 because it has always been done....
I take advantage of opportunities to hang with whenever I can! https://t.co/miNkk5H66x
great to see you both leading tonight
A1:To reinforce learning that occurred during the day, it's expected or mandated/status quo
A1 Reinforce what was taught that day.
A1: for practice because practice makes perfect...(well only if the practice is perfect)
A1 - Unfortunately I think many Ts give homework because they feel it's an expectation
creepin' 🤓 definitely interested in the topic
A1: Parents have a huge say in homework. Lots of parents think their kids are not learning without any homework
A1: Not as much time needed to practice the skill in class
Mandates for HW.... we dont' see the logic in that. https://t.co/J50eogNoI9
A1: Mandated by district/curriculum, bc it was done to them, they believe it will reinforce what was done in class
Welcome Ashley! Were you introduced to at the recent conference for pre-service Ts?
I am trying to buy some LLR and do
I definitely am not clever
A1: While these all might be causes for a teacher to assign homework, none of them are good reasons. https://t.co/8Xy1TIVKqM
great resource! Thanks for sharing
Erin from Adrian High School-a little late
Greetings Felix - thanks for stopping by and adding to our conversation! I'm missing
Glad to have you join tonight Ashley
I know Kalamazoo Public Schools mandates 10 minutes per grade level (w/ little direction for how to divvy b/t Ts)
hey join us at if you are just hanging out... topic right now is homework
Kellie here from Waterford, a little late too. Hi everyone!
Expectation of leadership or parents or someone else? https://t.co/LCOmLa8j27
A1 - Unfortunately I think many Ts give homework because they feel it's an expectation
A1) Supposed to be independent work beyond the school day. Unfortunately turns out to be more detrimental than helpful
A1: HW happens b/c it's what has always been done, but should happen to help bridge today's learning with tomorrow's
So we could be creative (aka "hacky") with how we meet that mandate, right? https://t.co/u2XTXnGh6a
I know Kalamazoo Public Schools mandates 10 minutes per grade level (w/ little direction for how to divvy b/t Ts)
. So what would be a good reason to give homework?
My point about "parent" pressure links to this--because "that's what school does". Bluck!
Why mandate HW? Shouldn't it be based upon students needs? Ridiculous malpractice
A1: Reading is assigned as homework because minutes make a difference! Hopefully it's most often choice
Just hoped in totally intrigued on this topic!
A1 - Parent expectation We did so should they!
A1: I strive to use class time as much as possible. It rolls into HW if Ss didn't use the time given. Also, culture expectations.
Q2: What are the problems with traditional homework?
It is the only homework that I assign!
Agree! Wasn't a fan of this b/c some Ts thought each T should give that much (90 minutes X 6 Ts!)
A1: Many time homework ends up being what wasn't finished in school often teacher say don't give it but what isn't done becomes it
A1 - Because we have loads of educational research to support it! Today is April 1st right?
A2: my biggest struggle is getting it returned complete and on time which is why I assign reading every night.
A2: ohh the pain from the mothers perspective!!
A2: traditional HW often feels perfunctory instead of essential. Too much is just repeated from class-how necessary is that really?
I always felt that if it's taught right, it'll stick.
A2 Lacks emotional significance--boring, repetative, "busy work" (because anything too challenging wouldn't… https://t.co/95CMVMkLyr
Q2: What are the problems with traditional homework?
meaningful and purposefully work that student know how to do? Answer most frequently given
A2 Traditional homework usually doesn't account for the time students have to do other stuff and is often purposeless
A2: Often lacking creativity, Ss completing HW just to get it done. Reinforces a motion, not a way of thinking
A1: early in career, unfinished work became homework
A1-Because some believe in sort & separate. Fine w/ the achievement gap it perpetuates its how we know who will B success in college
A2 Traditional homework isn't differentiated so one size (#1-14 odd) fits all
A2) Home life is not traditional. Many Ss go home to further responsibilities. No quiet place to do HW
A2: The problem with traditional homework is that families are no longer traditional.
A2: traditional homework assumes support at home and understanding of material. Misses many Ss realities
A2: I'd like to learn more on what colleges do w/ HW & careers that expect employees to work outside of work - model those ways
. not a trick, asking honestly. If all of those are bad reasons, what are the good reasons? Are there good reasons?
yes and sometimes it becomes work for parents too https://t.co/R3xHCiGR4x
A1) Supposed to be independent work beyond the school day. Unfortunately turns out to be more detrimental than helpful
BINGO, BANGO, BONGO! https://t.co/dMvS6Xf1Sg
A2: The problem with traditional homework is that families are no longer traditional.
mandating HW is like a doctor mandated to prescribe an x-ray to all patients
I'm so happy to be back at ing. It's been a while, but I always feel more energized on Thursday:)
Parents want it and complain about it at the same time. I just had a whole thing with my son abt his tonight
A2: I always do a Seinfeld impression "What's the deal with homework. It's not like you're working on your home"
Dealing w/ family emergency, but here's my $.02 about HW: if it can be copied, it will be. I prefer it involve original thought.
very true, people are pulled in a ton of different directions.
A2: Traditional homework is not only not developmentally appropriate, it is almost impossible to find time to grade!
Start with the traditional part. It's a tradition and has little to do with learning or student mastery.
A2) Nightly hw doesn't reflect real life. Ss should work w deadlines
this https://t.co/TSwCQ4fsaq
A2: traditional homework assumes support at home and understanding of material. Misses many Ss realities
don't think there are good reasons to give traditional homework... worksheets are NEVER good. https://t.co/Za4IEoLPFK
. not a trick, asking honestly. If all of those are bad reasons, what are the good reasons? Are there good reasons?
A:2 Traditional hw can reinforce the wrong concept, method, answer...
Exactly! And so school shouldn't be either! https://t.co/UBCAeUqAe2
A2: The problem with traditional homework is that families are no longer traditional.
A1: Teachers give homework thinking it will reinforce their lesson. It doesn't work, just compliance.
A2: traditional HW takes the passion out of learning experience and makes it rote and mundane
I was comfortable at HS assigning work over a course of time to be done at home. Nightly homework, not so much.
Exactly! Why can't kids just go home and unwind if they have been working hard learning all day?
I agree! Tasks with a problem and idea that could involve the parents might be better.
A2: Traditional homework can be rote memorization, quickly forgotten.
A2 my homework is to only read for APUSH
Q3:What are some authentic ways learning occurs outside the classroom (not talking worksheets here)?
Yes or done incorrectly and remembered wrong https://t.co/Tt21UILFqD
A2: Traditional homework can be rote memorization, quickly forgotten.
Right! The flipped classroom model is built on kids doing their homework through video/reading/audio
Homework that involves a project that has a deadline that is possible makes for deeper learning.
A3: spending time with their family!
A3: Teach what you learned to someone else, interview real life people on a topic, apply learning to local businesses etc.
A3: Learning happens in kitchens, nature walks, at museums, on Poke walks, anywhere we let it :)
A2 most of my Ss need specialized attention to get through assignments & not have a melt down even when things are independent level
A3 - Learning happens everywhere... we just have to remind kids that's what they are doing!
absolutely... so much to learn from a game of monopoly or scrabble https://t.co/w17cpGPQDo
A3: spending time with their family!
. So what could we do to make it more of a deeper reflection?
I agree with you!! Completely!
A3: we demand so much from students during the day they need to be allowed to go home and be kids!
A3: Starting to have lots of great learning convos on walks and car rides with my 9 yo daughter.
Hello all! Sorry I'm just joining in and getting caught up. Happy to be here 😊
BOOM! https://t.co/MqTXrJrWx6
A3: we demand so much from students during the day they need to be allowed to go home and be kids!
Traditional HW = Taught it today, ran out of time to complete the worksheet... finish it at home for homework. Not a good practice!
Having HS students learn from jobs or charity work.
A3: take a walk and describe what you see! What is biotic and what is abiotic ...
A3: Students don't have to sit at the kitchen table with a task assigned from their teachers to be learning. https://t.co/hX2rZE8afd
Singing and dancing the happy dance! https://t.co/YqCtImlsRA
choice reading at home? No reading logs, no surprise quizzes, but encouraged, interest-based reading.
A3: teach students the power of observations so they can see the learning in the world around them
A3: Weekly goals for eating family dinner, helping a friend or family, exercising will stick with students longer than a worksheet
Authentic learning happens in every day life! I heard a T tell about how she didn't understand fractions until she started cooking
A3 Thru storytelling (shared experiences); thru discussing current events; participating in extracurricular… https://t.co/plfY53YCAv
Q3:What are some authentic ways learning occurs outside the classroom (not talking worksheets here)?
I agree that that worksheets aren't good - but is traditional homework only worksheets? https://t.co/qOJvuj0Nra
don't think there are good reasons to give traditional homework... worksheets are NEVER good. https://t.co/Za4IEoLPFK
. not a trick, asking honestly. If all of those are bad reasons, what are the good reasons? Are there good reasons?
family traditions are important.
Funny! https://t.co/6rBoNu948t
A2: I always do a Seinfeld impression "What's the deal with homework. It's not like you're working on your home"
My son and I go on Poke walks now and we talk a lot and I learn about what he is interested in https://t.co/tBncQLk7pE
A3: Starting to have lots of great learning convos on walks and car rides with my 9 yo daughter.
A3: Learn by sharing stories - your own and investing in the stories others share. Listen with more than just your ears ...
Amazing HW given by to 1st graders. Use iPads to capture "air"- they came in w/ pictures, videos, experiments to share
A3: read a book, the paper, etc ask students to find the topic you are studying in their everyday life Make them make connections
Great analogy! https://t.co/z9sipmFrUi
mandating HW is like a doctor mandated to prescribe an x-ray to all patients
I think meaningful, connected project work on a deadline is a good example of homework. https://t.co/c6ChcUXr8J
Homework that involves a project that has a deadline that is possible makes for deeper learning.
USE in Ss life. Teach it to family. make connections to Ss lives and see the practicalities so it's not just more
Q:3 Apprenticeship opportunities, skateboarding, minecraft, cooking dinner, shopping with Mom, mud puddles, & walking in the woods!
A3) Talk to the kids. Have family conversations. Read / watch the news together. Watch historical fiction films
A3: Every situation within the school environment is a teachable moment! It is hard to narrow it down.
Meaning that it doesn't mean anything. My son can go thru problems without thinking. Requires no thought may be better
A3) Talk about school. Don't just ask how it was today. Ask what they learned / discussed
A3: project based learning assignment that is based on student interest
the app really makes it easy and it also gets him moving. We took a 5 mile walk on the boardwalk today by the beach
Just got the kids down, looking forward to this chat.
A3: My daughter's psych teacher has her teach a new concept/lesson to someone- she taught me about neurons last night!
A3 When us teacher/parents take bad HW & hack it to make it relevant. Should've been the T's job
Q:3 Also turning off the screens & reading together!
A3: I can think of attenance at local political meetings, interviews, exploring city and home, family questions as
for some HW works but for others they learn and are engaged in different ways I have two that like & 1 hate
I think the one size fits all is the biggest part of traditional https://t.co/2wvjP6UlTB
No I think it's nightly, one size fits all homework that doesn't account for where each child is or what they do when they get home
A3: Seeing application of their material-how vocab is used, identifying different ways they use a skill in everyday activity
A3 Everything is about learning - life begs for us to dig deeper for sure
SO important, and helps teach personal accountability and creates buy-in. Love putting Ss in the driver seat of their edu
there is no research that suggests it's good. Giving work just to give it isn't a good enough reason
Yay! Hello Hawaii from cold Michigan....welcome to our chat
This is how you foster a love for reading, not with a reading log. https://t.co/M4aOTGeAsU
Q:3 Also turning off the screens & reading together!
I did need to spend intentional time working through the planning process with them. Calendar reviews, tools, etc.
A3: Interact with nature, e.g. Find acorns and use them for a counting game.
When I ask my kids about school, they know they can't get away w just telling me the title of the topic.
A3: watching current political ads, evaluating arguments, and engaging family/friends in dialogue
Book giveaway for Hacking Homework: 10 Strategies That Inspire Learning Outside the Classroom https://t.co/0xSg3HOF0e
Relevancy is key. https://t.co/WPt3Mr8roP
A3: Seeing application of their material-how vocab is used, identifying different ways they use a skill in everyday activity
Maby Ts need to send home talking points and questions to be asked of the students?
The Homework Myth: Why Our Kids Get Too Much ... by Alfie Kohn https://t.co/KTiczbTHnq Shares great research to support no HW
Did this just come from ? I had to read it twice. LOL! https://t.co/7lFczti81d
A3: Interact with nature, e.g. Find acorns and use them for a counting game.
Authentic learning CAN happen, but lets not assume that all parents seize learning opportunities and read to their kiddos!
of course, but how valuable to learn both the content and the life skill! Well worth the intentional class time given
A3: Video story problems! Finding math and science in real life, grabbing video and bringing it back into the classroom
not for all kids for sure
That would be hard for many Ts and admin to accept.
Hey! My daughter is at a nature preschool, u can bet we're finding leaves and acorns every day. 😜
I was waiting for you to mention these! Love the math videos! Share the link https://t.co/QYSA6IfrCp
A3: Video story problems! Finding math and science in real life, grabbing video and bringing it back into the classroom
Even if my entire MS decided to eliminate HW, we'd have to get the HS, parents & college admission folks to go along. Trickles down.
perfect tool for helping this happen and automatically upload into digital portfolio.
They're not 10 years old.
https://t.co/FCxeW1wJVA
I would argue nightly homework does reflect real life. I have a LOT of MBA friends that have "work" every night
https://t.co/8waDO0jmaT
theres an interest culture shift too. Kids have an edge against once size fits all. HW, traditionally, is that.
This would be the best math problems! Love it!
Now I want to show up to work tomorrow with my pitchfork -----E NO HW! NO HW!
if personalized some might not get HW so no mandate ...
I can't even tell you how many times I share 's videos! https://t.co/WmWq0wN4kK
A3: Video story problems! Finding math and science in real life, grabbing video and bringing it back into the classroom
Hey there Mary from DeWitt joining a little late. 💚 this topic, so I wasn't going to miss this convo!
this is an interesting point. There's this weird gap btw home and school that needs a more authentic bridge.
I've been really excited to see how much my Ss have embraced WRITING ESSAYS on Ggl Classroom.Wht a diff a keyboard can make!
Q5: How can we partner with families to encourage learning both in and out of the classroom?
and they signed up for that. Kids don't, but are still expected to attack w/ the same vigor
grading homework is a whole other mess... topic for another time for sure
Chrissy from NJ joining late.
A5: MakerClubs are a great way for Ss and parents to learn and find passion together.
Lurking in the chat tonight, while I help my student through video chat on economic systems! Great topic for thought tonight
A5: make curriculum nights, PTA and events at school family learning opportunities. Parent education for support of Ss learning
I absolutely LOVE predictive spelling tools built into the iPad for my kiddos! They are writing now!
A5: I'd redo all the math HE I ever sent and make it into interactive family games and projects. Fun for all!
Maybe true.
They're also compensated for that work. I think 6-7 hours a day is enough for a child. https://t.co/TSQxW08WTT
Some of them act like 10-year olds ;)
Even with support, took 3 of us 2 hours to do the darn wordseach! But the Marsh family DID IT! So yeah... worst HW ever!
I find parents are even enthusasitc and WANT to participate.
Q:5 Have a family night that is all about alternative HW options.
HW is not real life. Deadlines are - and they teach time management & choice!
A5: One way to partner with families is to give them strategies to combat the homework battle. https://t.co/C0BQpGLr5L
Never without me asking "Do I really have to do this again?" https://t.co/7B1nWFhwcT
how often are you asked to do something that you have already done or know how to do it?
A5 When families know what kids are learning the better they can participate with things that are happening at home
A5: Parent education is a must. Not all parents are teachers! Give talking points and suggestions for learning at home.
good distinction between HW and deadlines.
A5 I have to get on my soap box! AMAZING free tool to do just this. can make 3 way relationship- parents, students, school
YES! Empower them. https://t.co/HQxIPdgm9O
A5: Parent education is a must. Not all parents are teachers! Give talking points and suggestions for learning at home.
Deadlines don't "teach" anything... they EXPECT time management. Big difference. https://t.co/1oPMdWvfvF
HW is not real life. Deadlines are - and they teach time management & choice!
A5 My school holds many family events. Sessions for kid and parents. Parent sessions on literacy skills.
it's always about feedback and teaching kids to give and receive it better then apply it
A5: Have authentic presentations of learning by students and invite parents to take part!
Most kids have little to no control over their schedule/time, so time mgmt is moot.
We're not anti-homework.
We're anti-stupid homework.
Right ? https://t.co/MauESA0EGd
So now we're getting to a better understanding. It's not that homework = bad, it's being careful about balance/authenticity
I like this idea, invite parents into the room.
Don't project deadlines offer an opportunity to teach time management to our students? https://t.co/RmYNfbzFvA
Deadlines don't "teach" anything... they EXPECT time management. Big difference. https://t.co/1oPMdWvfvF
HW is not real life. Deadlines are - and they teach time management & choice!
A5: Communication! Have parents in the know on what's going on in class. Google classroom = students and parents up to date
If your HW still has its URL printed on the bottom, it might be stupid!
Family Nights hlp parents understand the inner workings of the CR. Hwevr, some cultures are fixated on what their trad say works.
Not all professions take work home. HW is not a choice, so work at home isn't same as HW. https://t.co/RPL0hMgawH
I'm really confused here. Adults do work at home, whether forced or not. That's not real life?
A5 I use Class Story in to keep parents in the loop.
SO true. Most of my Ss have no resemblance of order or schedule in home
Yup! Doesn't get any clearer than that! Down with stupid everything in education https://t.co/mQqWxtgBfG
We're not anti-homework.
We're anti-stupid homework.
Right ? https://t.co/MauESA0EGd
So now we're getting to a better understanding. It's not that homework = bad, it's being careful about balance/authenticity
Q6: Other than homework, what are some ways we can "teach" responsibility to students?
I think this is true with proper check-ins/check-points. We are usually still teaching time management instead of expecting
And not all parents have the luxury of being present. Many work insane hours just to get by. https://t.co/QMoSogJ49F
A5: Parent education is a must. Not all parents are teachers! Give talking points and suggestions for learning at home.
must consider developmental appropriateness of work amount. They're kids.
Then my twitter account might not exist!
I don't have due dates, I have done dates. Things should be done by a certain time. Learning doesn't have an expiration date.
A6 My 3rd graders run our class. They do just about everything.
Not their fault. Kids are OVERscheduled. Hard to manage it all.
A6 Students can have leadership positions at school like on a newspaper or in a club or on a team
Ohhhhh... somebody put that on a poster and laminate it!
Saving this one, Mike. https://t.co/8YH4606rTH
I don't have due dates, I have done dates. Things should be done by a certain time. Learning doesn't have an expiration date.
A6: PBL. Ss feel passionate about their work, learn time management, accountability, and how to be a group member
A6: Accountibility/Group Contracts when doing group work/projects, having students teach others in order to assess their learning.
A6: You allow there to be consequences. Its not easy to see your kids upset or sad, but in the end they are better off.
A5: Most parents want to participate. Some don't know how to be involved. Teach them through rapport/relationships.
A5 stimulating kids to think and explore. Ss bring content and discussion home when right answers aren't the driving force
Completely agree; calls and visits home can help bridge those divides.
A 6 Kids do lunch count, take attendance, stuff folders, decide on HW if we have any, even help with planning to some extent
Plus, it said spelling WS were appropriate, the student should be able to do alone.
T told me:
Your son needs to learn vocab for HW.
How does it connect in class?
I don't teach it in class. Just test it.
WHAT?
...AND having students invite and teach their parents what they're learning!
A6: Every Friday a student takes home Buttercup the Guinea Pig from our class. They feed her, change bedding, etc. They LOVE her! ❤️
A6: The learning space. Giving ownership for the kids to create, curate, and generally care for different spaces in the classroom.
or even in class. Daily reporters, CW helpers, study buddies
A6: doing all formative work is part of the "retake ticket" to revise the summative. Reading grasshopper/ant fable as inspiration
How about read b/c it's fun... not read to comply?
Do we have to give HW to brush your teeth? https://t.co/rB3piiMMpD
That's why I always appreciated the "read for 20 minutes" homework :)
How about read b/c it's fun... not read to comply?
Do we have to give HW to brush your teeth? https://t.co/rB3piiMMpD
That's why I always appreciated the "read for 20 minutes" homework :)
A6: To each other. Counseling groups. Serve lunch. Work with younger Ss. Active in the community. Anything that builds empathy.
Set up routines & rituals with revolving classroom leadership-a sub could ask the kids ? & kids can answer! Ownership of everything!
Loving these ideas I'm getting from tonight!
Just gotta throw my 2 cents in.. as a busy working mom I truly HATE homework.... lol
Read for 20 minutes every single night! Reading is not "homework". It's a life habit :)
A6 Have Ss as tech support, TNTs - teachers in training, etc. All teaches respon.
yes exactly! There are tons of opportunities to actually teach responsibility IN class https://t.co/NX4iG9USN2
or even in class. Daily reporters, CW helpers, study buddies
I believe that the amount of teaching of time management depends on the grade level
True, but sadly many adults were never taught group norms/time management, so we need to formatively assess before assuming
I had an experience with science definitions tonight with my son. He was upset he'd be yelled at tomorrow
That is our weekly "homework" too! https://t.co/EWEzxcgZtl
Read for 20 minutes every single night! Reading is not "homework". It's a life habit :)
Work done at home teaches responsibility, just don't have unreconcilable consequences when life happens. Kids are still kids.
Not sure very many teachers have time management lesson plans. Can you share? https://t.co/uycNqOIBW1
I believe that the amount of teaching of time management depends on the grade level
A6: Ss finding resources that work for them and their learning. Seeing what different resources are out there is great!
Q7: What kind of push back might we get if we propose a shift in homework? How can we address that push back?
Careful of your verbs...
Assigning work at home doesn't TEACH anything, it EXPECTS it.
Big difference.
https://t.co/JrRPLWWgZp
Work done at home teaches responsibility, just don't have unreconcilable consequences when life happens. Kids are still kids.
A7 Getting push back in my new school from my team. They just don't agree with a shift in HW
Someone mentioned the reading for 20 minutes (love that chart). Putting my device & away & picking up my book. 🤓✌🏼
exactly and we want to foster those not make kids hate them by requiring it and telling them how to do it f… https://t.co/DYS0XZrYxH
Read for 20 minutes every single night! Reading is not "homework". It's a life habit :)
A7 I have presented them with research about elem Ss and HW.
A7 Some are starting to budge. Actually beginning to differentiate HW at least
A7: All of my Ps have appreciated me assigning reading as their HW over the years. Allows for more family time and busy schedules. .
I don't think that's a lesson plan - that's a crucial conversation with Ss to support project work
wow how sad 😟 Ss are so pressured to "succeed" and perform at high, unhealthy levels
I'm not exaggerating. T said he doesn't teach or talk about the vocab words, just assigns and asseses.
NO… https://t.co/NlysUn9NbR
I had an experience with science definitions tonight with my son. He was upset he'd be yelled at tomorrow
A7: Change always brings pushback. Traditionalists will say it's not how it is in the real world.
Just mentioned. Make sure your ads can tell time and elapsed time. Realized ours couldn't. Huge piece. https://t.co/AuYSHluU6l
Not sure very many teachers have time management lesson plans. Can you share? https://t.co/uycNqOIBW1
I believe that the amount of teaching of time management depends on the grade level
A7 Some folks just don't like change. The best thing you can do is talk benefits - stay positive when pushback happens
A7: for those that want more than reading I provide opportunities via IXL or Prodigy, etc...
Q7: If parents wanted more homework, I told them there were extension websites on our classroom website (never mandatory)
Giving HW will NEVER teach time mgmt or responsibility--only compliance. CARING about something makes you WANT to do it.
A7: We need to make better use of class time, no need for so much HW when so much class is wasted.
I wouldn't say time management needs a lesson plan, just regular check-ins and group norms (https://t.co/HAVcM1vspQ )
. Is there really data that support making kids read for 20 minutes a night hate reading?
INCREDIBLE tool~ Top on my list. Ts support is AMAZING too~ reach out to me with any questions as you move forward
A7: Character pushback: responsibility, management, discipline, etc. often kids can learn these without worksheets.
Q7 Pushback can start within depts. Build success with admin support on pilot basis. Seek advocates.
A7: homework is the traditional "norm". When Ps don't see physical work being brought home, sometimes they assume they did "nothing"
Those who teach in the next grade/school level may give lots of HW so it could be a big jump.
. we expect band/orchestra students to practice their instruments every night, many grow up not hating music.
Just saying HW should be relevant, customized, and purposeful.
Not sure math worksheet fits that criteria. https://t.co/bIA0EtPiFn
I just sat next to a kid that loved doing her math worksheet. This is a tough topic to find consensus for me.
I have experiential data that supports it. Not just from my own child, but others and the ones I've taught
did she love doing it because it was easy?
A7 If Ss are growing and learning...just keep fighting the good fight!
my son loves whizzing through worksheets too. But more bc he likes feeling good at things
A7: reading should be a part of students' everyday life. Besides that, we can offer optional "homework" if parents ask
or my favorite "that's how we've always done it". Others assume a HW shift T is not doing a good enough job
My kids like that their homework is nightly reading. I also make sure to show the value.
Now THIS sounds like teaching time management, not just expecting it. https://t.co/DUPYkVUJ3e
I used to have Ss complete a calendar for a week. Record everything. Then would plan breaks, homework, etc
A7: Listening to Ss feedback & seeing end product. It's how it helped/hurt the student learning. Not what others think is "right HW"
yes, I agree and in high school it varies from teacher to teachers, subject to subject
many kids who are choosing to take an instrument practice bc they want to improve. There are suggestions on time
What confounds me is tht this stuff still happens.Am lookng 4 a ldrshp pos so I can influnce pedagogy.
My son plays the flute and practices when he feels like it
Great point, have a web presence that supports and allows extension for reaching both ends!
this yr compared to last yr. night & day difference. Lots HW, stress, frustration last yr, this yr not much HW less stress happy son
Not necessarily--it is the 20 minutes of reading being graded or other accountability that leads to hate.
we need many change agents in education
exactly! thank you for articulating better
Deadlines will teach them time management & choice - When should I get started?
A7 I get a call or two about not having a grade by first conferences, but far more Ps comments about discs @ home about learning
Yes, we have to be watchful of this. Can lead to fixed mindsets. https://t.co/G0hXaylsjK
my son loves whizzing through worksheets too. But more bc he likes feeling good at things
Q8: What are some ways we can use technology to rethink traditional homework?
Nails it. Do you really see some marvelous boost in understanding after kids complete traditional homework? https://t.co/fscmlc0rP9
A7: homework is the traditional "norm". When Ps don't see physical work being brought home, sometimes they assume they did "nothing"
I don't disagree. But leadership needs to lead. Best schools have the best leadership at all levels.
Maybe we just try to adjust so that we meet the needs of all children by not expecting the same thing for everyone
Some MS colleagues give HW to prepare kids for HS HW. Kids never get to enjoy the age they are.
A8: Tech may be tricky w/ accessibility. We need to rethink its purpose for sending home. Is it meaningful?
Backwards mapping out a schedule on a calendar, teaches them time management, not just giving a deadline. https://t.co/MBDwbASsov
Deadlines will teach them time management & choice - When should I get started?
A8 Most people have phones... vlog about given HW topic & upload to portfolio. When Ss explain- can push higher thnkng sklz
in third grade my son had over an hour of homework a night because they were test prepping
Great... then let her do it for "fun". Other kids might choose something else to do for fun. https://t.co/yaFLGZislE
Not arguing that it does. But my daughter loved doing it and said she likes the practice. So that's something...
Giving HW bc of fear of change? Fear leads to HW. HW to suffering. Suffering to hating learning. https://t.co/EO0LcNFMDy
exactly! Mind isn't active, it's automatic -recalling info & spitting it back out. Is that higher level thinking?
A8 Flipping the classroom with non-wifi needed electronic resources (at least in 1:1 classes/districts).
school shouldn't be about compliance, it should be about mastery learning. Need to figure out why?
I am hoping to get on the list as one of your favorite Michigan people. 😉
Can't argue with that, Chris. https://t.co/KNNNpH6Hkt
I don't disagree. But leadership needs to lead. Best schools have the best leadership at all levels.
A8: Gooru... Quizlet... If you need practice that's quick practice... https://t.co/UQdb3R926J
Q8: What are some ways we can use technology to rethink traditional homework?
I'm sure you're on the list already. Truth is I don't usually know where people are from ;)
When it is developmentally appropriate. They are not little adults. Their hands are full w/ growing up.
A8: Google Classroom allows students to upload many different options to answer questions. Ex: Pics, Vids, Writing...
that's what we advocate for in the book
A8: we need to be mindful that not all families have access to technology. Kids should have time in class to complete that homework
A8: otherwise, have them email you an exit ticket... https://t.co/UQdb3R926J
Q8: What are some ways we can use technology to rethink traditional homework?
yes! and then deciding what we want to be at the forefront of the learning experience
Could be fun like Interviewing grandparents who are South for the winter. Use tech to do what can't be done without.
RT https://t.co/pzlnPUBoVU
Payoff is pleasure. Like practicing a layup--its own reward. Some assignments intrinsically rewarding. Most not.
A8: Prodigy is a great free math game where specific skills can be assigned, kids love it! IXL is also great!
Mahalo everyone! This was fun & useful🌴Catch you all on my next vacation break! Aloha
A8:This. Ss take photo of learning/knowledge in the real world and tweet or share or send
A8: Ss using video to engage others at home or go over material (teaching others). No internet needed & can be revisited in clasroom
I'm not sure we should be grading compliance though and that's' what school does
A8 my goal is to get most P signed up for this Fall & then have 2 way conversations in my pocket!
Yes, Skype, Facetime makes this so easy. https://t.co/8EoE9zek2h
Could be fun like Interviewing grandparents who are South for the winter. Use tech to do what can't be done without.
Thank you for inviting us This was lots of fun - always love to talk homework
yes. Too often we just want to blame and point fingers. Doesn't solve anything
A8: Have to be cautious with tech. Can easily replace worksheet at home. Some kids just need to be outside and play.
Music teachrs who grade w/ practice logs invite faking, emphasize wrong goals, elevate data over results.
