A weekly half hour chat focused on improving access to education for PK-12 students through the use of Accessible Educational Materials (AEM), Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and Assistive Technology (AT).
Don’t forget use the hashtag #PatinsIcam in each tweet and start your answer w/ A1, A2, etc. Try retweeting with your comment to keep the questions clear for everyone! #PatinsIcam
Good Evening All, Julie's here (Orthopedic Access to Curriculum and AAC, AT Team Development). Lover of lake living, accessible technology, chocolate, reading! #PatinsIcam
Hello! Rachel Herron here! I am currently residing in Franklin Indiana and I am a PATINS Specialist for AT, AEM, ED and Apple Accessibility! SO glad to be here for the last chat of the semester! #PatinsIcam
Best thing about #PatinsIcam Twitter chat is that nobody's late! Feel free to answer questions even after the chat. @PATINSPROJECT will answer the call!
A1: The Ss should feel safe in having some responsibility 4 the need of accessible materials. All it takes is taking the time to ask S "How do u learn best?" & if they aren't sure- help facilitate the discovery, identify & ALL educators w Ss should team & move forward #PatinsIcam
Same here in Cali. Driven by the all powerful IEP but totally agree that is that ALL educators involved should have a responsibility for Ss success. #PatinsIcam
Jessica, I had a question from a teacher yesterday... when is the right time get these materials? Do we wait until they are around 2nd grade or can it be earlier? #PatinsIcam
A2: One question that I would suggest would be “are they struggling to read and understand the printed content?” If the A is yes, is there a plan in place to evaluate other formats? #PatinsIcam
I would say there is no reason to wait. ICAM can support teams in getting materials as early as Kindergarten, and we teams to support students in PreK to ensure they get access to text. The job of reading starts right after the womb, don't wait! #PatinsIcam

It's sad an often seen too many time where the culture of a certain Ss school believes this falls solely on specialty service providers. The more collaboration and support from the whole team base, will equal MUCH better results for the struggling Ss #PatinsIcam
Can they hold a book? Turn pages? See the book? Require Braille? Enlarged print? HOW do we need to present this material in the BEST format so they are able to access the content #Patinsicam
What if its both... If basic reading of sight words is a barrier how do I have students access the same book that all 4th graders are reading?? #PatinsIcam
I could not agree more, Neal! The SHARED responsibility and SHARED accountability by educators that students deserve makes all of the difference! #PatinsIcam

A3: Educators should know the ICAM Center is available to guide T’s and staff through the process for qualifying S’s. Each school corporation can have up to 5 DRM’s and they have been trained to facilitate this process.
#PatinsIcam
I would call it "early introduction to your human right to literacy in any way we can provide it" but Early Intervention is shorter and has a better ring to it :-) #PatinsIcam
A3: Sometimes there is confusion regarding how to get AEM, in Indiana, the Indiana Center for Accessible Materials ICAM is waiting to help! #PatinsIcam
So glad you are mentioning this! the concept of Being able to hold a book and turn the pages often gets placed on the backburner in our essential skills classes. ALL Ss need to be exposed to rich vocabulary! Right @jconradslp? #PatinsIcam
In reply to
@hillarygfphdatp, @ksuding, @jconradslp
A3 buy in and willingness to learn/understand the formats that certain Ss needs. Often this takes more prep/time from certain team members that are already pretty maxed out. So the successful workflow goes to the waste side #PatinsIcam
I couldn't agree more. Accommodations are NOT a replacement to decoding strategies, etc...it allows Ss to have access grade level curriculum so they do not get behind while they are still working on those skills. #PatinsIcam
A3- Not knowing enough... does every student need a doctors note for a print disability?? Can a print disability be a part of the students Autism or OHI elegibilty?? #PatinsIcam
Yes! Not every student will be "chaffee qualified" or eligible for all the services of the ICAM, but the school will still need to provide AEM. We can help guide and support. Start a conversation (Martha and Sandy on this chat are so helpful!) #PatinsIcam

If they don't qualify for the ICAM's services it is still the school's responsibility to provide them. That is where #UDL and #Equity and the PATINS Specialists come in. #PatinsIcam
A4: Again, I think this is a team effort. It's sad when "that person" retires or moves, and the whole system collapses. Get IT, gen ed, admin all on board, it's a heavy lift and easier together #PatinsIcam
I know that this feels like "one more thing" to some educators...but in the long run it makes things easier for teachers and makes students INDEPENDENT! Good call! #PatinsIcam

A3 not every classroom outline is set until that day starts. Unfortunately braille, tactile graphics, OCR, digital format ect... need time to be put in formats that are accessible. over 8 years in the field, it's struggle every year. we don't have magic braille wand #PatinsIcam
You are correct! Education about this is HUGE! Doctor's notes are needed for print disabilities...this can sometimes be tricky for educators! Greenwood Schools need to apply for our AEM grant next year!! @jclambert33 :) #PatinsIcam

A3: Often barriers are mindset of "Accommodations are cheating"..."I want them to be able to read by themselves." #PatinsIcam It's takes some conversations of the WHY & understanding of SLD & decoding vs. comprehension
A4: T’s need to begin creating materials that are accessible or that can be found in an accessible format. If they are receiving materials from the ICAM, these items should be ordered before they leave for the summer.
#PatinsIcam
Nope! This is just the beginning of an excellent conversation! If I know you (and I DO) nothing will stop you once you know the answers and we are here to help!! Let's set up a time! #PatinsIcam
You are HERE....ahead of the game, my friend. Plus! Ur still making your GIF accessible! #PatinsIcam We all learn together. It takes a village & like @hillarygfphdatp said...Twitterverse!

A5 Support and respect. I started out as a para and an amazing TVI instantly made me a huge part of the team, that gave me a huge buy in and responsibility to the Ss direct success. Everyone on that team should have a voice no matter what letters follow there name #PatinsIcam
