Hey #leadupchat! Keith, Lead Learner from @GatorRunElem, driving back to South FL after a few amazing days at @fetc! (My wife is the one actually driving!)
Q1: What is your "pump you up" song? In other words, what is your go-to song when you need that extra encouragement to tackle a challenging task or day?
#leadupchat
Good morning #leadupchat! Cristi from NC here, but checking in from my hotel in PA...hoping my phone can keep up since I'm computer-less (and Tweetdeck-less) 😁
Q1: What is your "pump you up" song? In other words, what is your go-to song when you need that extra encouragement to tackle a challenging task or day?

Q1: What is your "pump you up" song? In other words, what is your go-to song when you need that extra encouragement to tackle a challenging task or day?
#leadupchat
A1 I would go to my workout list, but only with headphones on, some of it not for any little ears.Ha, ha! Probably Peanut Butter and Jelly by Galantis. #leadupchat
A1: It changes all the time, kid friendly I have a mix of old rock and pop songs that are fun. Gym music or in my classroom marking, it is a very strange mix. I could not pick just one. Lately I would say P!NK's new album or some of Eminem's new tracks... #LeadUpChat

#leadupchat
A1: So many songs! One that comes into my mind right away is “Renegades” by @XAmbassadors. I feel like we need to be renegades to lead the way to transforming what “school” is and should be. #LeadUpChat

A1 I don’t just have one... Eye of the Tiger, The Final Countdown, Love Like There’s No Such Thing As a Broken Heart, and Shake It Off come to mind first though #LeadUpChat

#leadupchat
A1: Good morning #leadupchat from Barbara, school counselor in Friendswood, TX. My favorite pump-up song is Rose Falcon's Up Up Up! https://t.co/hFzSukOCl7
Q1: What is your "pump you up" song? In other words, what is your go-to song when you need that extra encouragement to tackle a challenging task or day?
#leadupchat
A1: Anything by @elevation_wrshp gets me inspired and pumped in the mornings on the way in & reminds me we are fighting the good fight daily! #leadupchat
A1: Not sure I have been ever asked that before. I don't think I have one. I just re-watch the last out of the 2016 World Series to pump me up. 😀 #Cubs#Leadupchat
A1: MercyMe- Bring the Rain
“Bring me joy, bring me peace
Bring the chance to be free
Bring me anything that brings You glory. And I know there'll be days
When this life brings me pain
But if that's what it takes to praise You... Jesus, bring the rain.” #LeadupChat

My 13 year old daughter has a pump up play list she uses before every soccer game - I think I need to build one for me! Awesome suggestions here! #leadupchat
#leadupchat -- Passing along my 6th student-led World Read Aloud Day initiative. We would love some help getting classrooms to participate in it and show the love of literacy! Thanks!! https://t.co/kaHopK0egG
A2: I love that... failure, struggle, and making and learning from mistakes are often more important in the learning/leading process. #grit#growthmindset#leadupchat
A1 *Don’t Laugh* I 💗 Disney’s Moana and all the music! How Far I’ll Go and I am Loan/Know Who You Are Pump. Me. Up. I love the entire album! #leadupchat
A2: Obstacles help us build the following: Resilience, Persistence, Patience, & Better Practices. Without obstacles, we are just meeting the status quo! #leadupchat
A2: Reminds me of a quote my students looked at about if a challenge doesn't scare us it probably isn't worth it. Obstacles are learning opportunities a path without learning seems...boring #LeadUpChat
A2) Comfort reinforces what we already know, so how can we learn new things? Discomfort and pain teaches us, and failure is fundamental in the teaching and learning process. #leadupchat
A2: An educational path with no obstacles reminds me of “this the way we’ve always done it” Obstacles come up when we strive for constant improvement #leadupchat
A2: I’m not crazy about the quote. We learn from productive struggle and failure. We should challenge our limits & push students. However, some people learn in the fast lane & don’t experience as many barriers. It doesn’t mean they are in the wrong lane. #leadupchat
A2 Anything worth changing will come with obstacles or challenges. Change is uncomfortable for most. If we want to create lasting impact for our kids. If we want to transform then let’s meet resistance with energy, positivity and kindness. Let’s work together. #leadupchat
A2: I've been thinking about this a lot lately - when the path holds no obstacles the work isn't fulfilling and likely doesn't hold much impact. We have to be willing to engage in the hard stuff. #leadupchat
The growth is in the struggle and in the failure. You don't get any better if there's not first a moment where you're not good enough. That's what education is all about. Learning and growing towards a better (______ insert appropriate pronoun here). #leadupchat
A2: only doing what we or our S’s already know to do doesn’t help us move forward, & the world is constantly moving forward. We must attempt new things, problem solve & find joy in the journey & encourage our S’s to do the same #leadupchat
A2 Most good things are not accomplished following a straight and narrow path and require some grit. If they are important enough we should be willing to dig deep and do what we need to do. #getuncomfortable#leadupchat
A2: Agree and disagree. As an educator, I strive to build appropriate obstacles to challenge my students to grow. As a school leader, I strive to remove obstacles for my teachers to maximize performance and minimize distractions. Like everything, depends on context. #LeadUpChat
A path with no obstacles has been well-traveled (statues quo) Obstacles make the journey an adventure! Find ways over, around, and through them to pave your own path! #leadupchat
A2 reminds me of the need for more risk taking and innovative thinking to place all Ss in a position to succeed. Sure, there will be resistance, but a reward could be right around the corner. #leadupchat
Just like exercising at the same level of resistance, you never grow if you're never challenged. The thing is finding which obstacles to push your way over, and which to find a way around. Which proverbial hills to die on, I guess. #balance#leadupchat
A2: Oh, it'll lead somewhere but the somewhere that's way more satisfying is at the end of that path of persistence and perseverance, growth and grace, learning and love, all of which are hurdles to leap that make us stronger, grittier, more resilient. #leadupchat
A2-At times the right decisions for our kids will take us down the toughest road. If we choose the easy way at times, we stay in the status quo. #leadupchat
A2 "Wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction..." The easy path is not worth it! What we have to work for is a learning process in itself and our Ss benefit from the struggle! #LeadUpChat
Q2: having to go outside your comfort zone and face obstacles is what makes everyone (especially students) resilient! I learn more from my failures than I do my successes #leadupchat
A1 So many to choose but lately it’s “I don’t like it, I LOVE it” by Flor Rida. 🎶🎶🎶 “Gonna hit it til I jackpot, that’s right! Wax on baby-Wax off. That’s right!!”🎶🎶🎶 #leadupchat
A2: Everyone wants the easy path where there is no struggle and challenge! That is fine but if you want to be the greatest you have to work for it and struggle with it and when the dust clears you are on top! That’s how education should be...challenging but rewarding #LeadUpChat
A2: agree and disagree. Sometimes things just come easy but it doesnt mean we dont put forth effort and reach for more. Agree that some of the greatest opportunities come through our greatest struggles. #embracethegrind#leadupchat
A2: We learn the most during struggles and from our failures. These moments help cement the true learning when it occurs. When things are too easy we don’t grow. Learning is all about growth and becoming the best version of ourselves. Struggle is our ally. #leadupchat
Q2: Path w/ No obstacles? Never have seen one worth taking! It is possible to find some with fewer, more meaningful ones & choose wisely I think. #leadupchat
A2: At the moment, this is making me think of attempts to find a silver bullet, a perfect program, a magical teachers manual. The hard way that develops expertise in teachers and accounts for individual students is the one that leads somewhere. #leadupchat
A2: We learn and grow most from our challenges. Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes... “You can’t stop the waves from coming but you can learn to surf.” #leadupchat
A2 Things that come so easily are less appreciated or remembered. Without a healthy struggle it really isn’t worth it because if you didn’t have to fight for it at least a little you probably don’t truly want, need or value it. #LeadUpChat
A2: We learn the most during struggles and from our failures. These moments help cement the true learning when it occurs. When things are too easy we don’t grow. Learning is all about growth and becoming the best version of ourselves. Struggle is our ally. #leadupchat
A2 (cont.): I think it’s the difference between a tree fallen on your path and a rock in your shoe. Both are obstacles, but that doesn’t mean you should just endure the rock to build character. #leadupchat
A2: We must ask ourselves if we are on the right path. The journey should be full of opportunities that encourage us to reflect. Perhaps we should turn right or left to change our scenery. #leadupchat
A1: Not so much a specific song as much a specific sound. Something loud and fast....usually 90s grunge or Foo Fighters...their new song Run is good #leadupchat
A2 Obstacles in education require us to give a response of commitment and genuine desire to see Ss grow. As leaders in this work, we understand obstacles are opportunities to learn, apply lessons learned, and use these events to move toward greater success. #leadupchat
A2: I t also reminds me the work we do is solving mysteries not puzzles. Puzzles have answers, mysteries need problem solving and solutions. #leadupchat
A2: Path of least resistance means that you’re probably letting something important slip out of your hands. You’re not pushing the limits. You’re not reaching for what’s best for your kids. #leadupchat
A2 ~ Change needs to occur in our to reach our Ss and ensure their success. Change is difficult and leaders will encounter obstacles along the way. If not, you work in utopia :). #leadupchat
A2: I think part of this is things not going as we thought they would or as we had planned. Sometimes I think we see things playing out in our head but they don't go that way - step back, reflect, move forward. #leadupchat
Edu Leaders please share this important announcement 🎤 about our $300 💵 edtech Giveaway of stuff...
Things might have just got a little bigger 😉 😉 #leadupchat

Yes, we need to start to view obstacles as challenges and opportunities. And as @JohnCMaxwell says, "fail forward" mistakes are part of the learning process. #leadupchat
A2: Path of least resistance means that you’re probably letting something important slip out of your hands. You’re not pushing the limits. You’re not reaching for what’s best for your kids. #leadupchat
A2: This quote reminds me of Frost's "Road Less Traveled"--one of my all time favorites. An education journey that does not require us to overcome some obstacles is a journey that does not invite growth. #leadupchat
A2: Adversity is enescapable, teaching adaptability resilience and emotional regulation are future-ready skills that create productive thriving Ss! #LeadUpChat
A2: Paths with no obstacles can still lead to the right places, but challenges and failures help craft the best versions of those who are willing and humble and tenacious enough to learn from them and keep getting up for more. #leadupchat
A2 I think of the term ‘productive struggle’ and know that deeper thinking results in deeper learning. We need to provide opps for thinking and struggling to make sense of ideas. That is where we make meaning and that is when learning/understanding occurs. #LeadUpChat
How effective are we if we just do what we're comfortable with? The best learning happens when we have to reflect and adjust. Resilience is a beautiful thing and a critical skill. If the path is always easy, we may know the right answers but we don't remember why. #leadupchat
A2: I have learned and grown the most from my most challenging experiences. What that means for me as a leader, is that I should not fear any obstacles that may arise. Rather, I should see them as opportunities. #leadupchat
A2: Great quote. The obstacles remind us that where we are going matters. The questions and doubts that others bring to the table are keys to finding the best solution. #leadupchat
Do you want to be GREAT? @burgessdave A question for reflection. If you truly want feedback to get there, be willing to hear the tough to hear feedback as well- be willing to act not just think good intentions #leadupchat
A2: Everyone wants the easy path where there is no struggle and challenge! That is fine but if you want to be the greatest you have to work for it and struggle with it and when the dust clears you are on top! That’s how education should be...challenging but rewarding #LeadUpChat
A2 I think of the term ‘productive struggle’ and know that deeper thinking results in deeper learning. We need to provide opps for thinking and struggling to make sense of ideas. That is where we make meaning and that is when learning/understanding occurs. #LeadUpChat
A2: The real issues of the day our kids face (homelessness, abuse, food insecurity, drug/alcohol abuse) have roadblocks at every turn. It’s a good thing we didn’t join this profession to kick back & relax. We’re here to get our hands dirty & to make something better. #leadupchat
Key points, Heath. We must be purposeful in our desire to grow, as a result of the obstacles. Requires building a team of people who are constantly seeking to deepen their toolkit to support Ss #leadupchat
A2: We learn the most during struggles and from our failures. These moments help cement the true learning when it occurs. When things are too easy we don’t grow. Learning is all about growth and becoming the best version of ourselves. Struggle is our ally. #leadupchat
Or we are intentionally avoiding the struggle, stretch or conflict - which is not indicative of a growth focused leader. When we don't feel some discomfort, we likely aren't doing what we should be doing. #leadupchat
A2: I once had a great professor tell me "If you are comfortable, you're taking the easy path" and I have continued to attribute that to my life. It is better to learn from a mistake instead of being too afraid to try. #leadupchat#CEP416
Q3: This quote by Lao-Tzu discusses the importance of taking that first step on a big journey.
What is one professional/educational undertaking you have started (or are considering starting) this school year?
#leadupchat
A1:My music tastes are pretty diverse so it changes with my mood. Most recently, it's been this song that I do with my Ss each day. It address their hidden potential and belief in self: https://t.co/626OHaIKfr#leadupchat
A2: Going to take a moment to self-promote because I think this question applies to my @TedX Talk, “Our Schools Should Teach Kids to Fail”. #leadupchathttps://t.co/VndG3yikVe
A2. Teacher said ‘thanks for not requiring us to implement XYZ. When I saw others doing it I had to try and I love it! (And she’s doing a great job implementing) #leadupchat
A2:The world was never changed by people staying in their comfort zones. We role model that for our students, teachers, and parents. Be unafraid of failure so others become so as well. #leadupchat
A2: I agree. Our Ss need to hear this now more and than ever because it concerns me how easily they give up. I feel like I’m always talking about preserving and citing examples. #leadupchat
It reminds me of the term, "deliberate practice" from the work of Anders Ericcson where we work on the things that make us grow. The obstacles help us see our blind spots. #leadupchat
A2: “The measure of success is not whether you have a tough problem to deal with, but whether it is the same problem you had last year.” - John Foster Dulles #leadupchat
Joining late, Nick Brummet, Middle School Counselor from Clay Center, Kansas! I saw Q2 and couldn't resist but join the chat! Strength is found when we take a jump and try something WAY out of our comfort zone. #leadupchat
A3: I'm in the process of reevaluating my work - trying to determine what the focus should truly be. One big area of focus for me right now is district implementation of MTSS. #leadupchat
Respond with character, competence, and compassion/care. People will follow and remember a leader who is REAL more than one who always has to be right. #leadupchat
This has been me time and again in education. So grateful for the road less traveled and the educator I am because of the experiences I have had--obstacles and all. #leadupchat
Q3: This quote by Lao-Tzu discusses the importance of taking that first step on a big journey.
What is one professional/educational undertaking you have started (or are considering starting) this school year?
#leadupchat
A2: Great quote and mindset. The path of least resistance is always easier. But the strength, and making true memories, is during the journey towards that destination! #LeadUpChat
A2: I believe that without pain, perseverance, obstacles, growth is not possible. With these things, you develop grit and determination for what you believe in. #leadupchat
Going grade-less in LA I want to move to a feedback loop type of assessment practice. Turn in their best work at the end of the year but just refining assignments otherwise. I hate how obsessed kids get with marks. #LeadUpChat

I think I agree with you. #leadupchat | But I think too early and too 'complex' the quote, the students may need to much one to one guidance. I'm speaking as a parent.
I was just talking with my mom about this concept. She expressed wanting to take my challenges away to prevent the pain and I told her that I wouldn't want her to because of the core strength I have developed in facing them. #leadupchat
Q3: This quote by Lao-Tzu discusses the importance of taking that first step on a big journey.
What is one professional/educational undertaking you have started (or are considering starting) this school year?

A3: My focus for this year is to follow mt passion wherever it leads. When educators are passionate about their craft, it shows in their practice. #leadupchat
This is a pertinent connection, Jessica. Also, on our ascent to success, as we overcome boundaries, it is more helpful to have a team of sheep than one of goats. #SeeTheScripture#leadupchat
A3 I started a blog a year ago. Posted very little, but am recommitting to be more consistent. Also committed to share my learning through optional after school PD. #LeadUpChat
Q3: This quote by Lao-Tzu discusses the importance of taking that first step on a big journey.
What is one professional/educational undertaking you have started (or are considering starting) this school year?
#leadupchat
A3: Asking the question, "Is this really working for every kid?" We say every learner matters and we believe that all kids can learn but are our practices in line with that or are we actively, covertly working against this belief by living in our comfort zones? #leadupchat
A3: We have a team of teachers who are embracing the readers workshop model together and working on building great classroom libraries, sparking a love for reading, and changing our reading instruction. I’m so excited!! #leadupchat
A2: I feel strongly that if we want our Ss to understand the value of struggle and persevering, we have to be willing to share our own struggle. #leadupchat
A3 ~ Reading one professional book a month and developing at least three voluntary PD opportunities to turnkey some of the things I learn! First up ~ discussion about executive function & ways to assist Ss in the secondary classroom! #leadupchat
This has been me time and again in education. So grateful for the road less traveled and the educator I am because of the experiences I have had--obstacles and all. #leadupchat
If you click to "make collaborative" then anyone following the playlist can add to it. Playlist will show who added a song and when (cool features when using this with Ss) #leadupchat
A2 I hear the ole “That’s how we’ve always done it” or “That’s the (insert name of school/district) Way” The path of least resistance is easy but not always right. Growth involves trust, vulnerability, discomfort, risks, collegiality, failing upward...&failure hurts. #leadupchat
A3 I've been #gradeless for going on 3 years now. Next year, I'll be taking on a leadership role in my team as we all move that direction. I'm in the process of compiling resources and planning to help with the transition #leadupchat
A3: The pursuit of contract work as a curriculum designer and content creator (in addition to my day job) is my new undertaking. Proving to be a ton of fun and quite fulfilling. #leadupchat

A3: Digging deeper into student engagement and motivation to do a better job with ALL Ss. This requires a shift from what the T is teaching to what the Ss are Learning. What does each S need? #leadupchat
A3 I am starting a whole learning transformation for September. From class environment, to community partnerships, to personalized learning. Documenting, sharing ups and downs. Differentiation to the max. I am so pumped!! My PLN, my inspiration. #leadupchat

My book, You’re Hired: The Inside Secrets to Landing Your School #Leadership Job is a guide that coaches school and district leadership candidates through the hiring process. Check it out https://t.co/LR857eCFYu#leadupchat#edchat
A3: I was blessed to have a speaker put a name to something I've always believed about education: Trauma-informed. Ss can't learn if they're worried, scared, hungry, etc. Relationships with the Ss is the most important. I am learning more and reading more about this. #leadupchat
A3. Being new to a school community it’s crucial to start to build trusting relationships with staff, students, families and community. It’s important for everyone to know who you are and what you are about. #leadupchat
I love the analogy of the body builder. The goal is not to lessen the weight you are able to lift. The goal is to become strong enough to lift the weight. #leadupchat
A3: We have a team of teachers who are embracing the readers workshop model together and working on building great classroom libraries, sparking a love for reading, and changing our reading instruction. I’m so excited!! #leadupchat
Multi-tiered systems of support. It's the framework for ensuring that all students achieve at high levels by providing academic and social/emotional support through tiered interventions. #leadupchat
A3: We have been taking serious steps to become trauma informed and really incorporate social emotional learning for all. It’s a mindset shift for everyone and will take time, but I believe we are doing what’s best for Ss. #leadupchat

A3: changing the attitude of how people in our own district, community, and families see alternative education. We know that the fringe (brightest & lowest) have supports. What about those in the middle? They need an advocate pushing them and fighting for them.
#leadupchat
A3: Learning to say No. As leaders we feel pressure to accommodate everyone, somewhere along the way we lose ourselves. Take the first step to clarifying what u believe at the core and then gently say no to that which does not fit. #leadupchat
A3: I became an ambassador for @Seesaw, and I’m stretching myself with some new teaching innovations in the classroom like @DoInkTweets, and 💓 it! #LeadUpChat

A3: (Prof.)I have applied to 5 Ed.D. programs as well as begun shopping the resume to find the right school that fits my gifts and beliefs.

A3: I have been researching, learning, and collecting resources for everything #mindfulness, to help our school family stay in the moment, fully present, without judgement, and thriving. Start small, end BIG! #leadupchat
A2: There’s no easy way to make long term sustainable change & growth. You have to be committed to excellence every single day- for every single student. Accountability, transparency, & feedback-it’s not about programs it’s about people #vbevibe#principalsinaction#leadupchat

We are at the very beginning stages of this - so I'm not sure all that I would have to offer at this point. Would love to collaborate though! It's tough and I think we'd benefit from supporting each other! #leadupchat
Yes, we are in the people business and relationships are everything. The team needs trust and a shared goal, a School family that dreams together and teams together can move mountains. Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose! #LeadUpChat
This looks awesome and inspiring! I would love to be a part of complete educational redesign. We need to bust up this old insdustrial model system we are still pumping kids through like widgets on an assembly line. #leadupchat
In reply to
@Swayne_lead271, @KSDEredesign, @USD271_Schools
Wow. Great focus! I wish this would spread everywhere...it's an eye-opener when we really dig down to the purpose and usefulness of our grading practices. #leadupchat
A3: Professional undertaking-putting myself out there to lead more PD outside of my school/district (#standardsbasedgrading and art integration). Educational undertaking-working to become Google Certified and am considering going back to grad school. #leadupchat#lifelonglearner
A3: This year we added a WIN block (what I need) to try to provide enrichment or intervention for every student, I have been able to lead a group of 3rd graders working on reading perseverance and recording book buzzes...best way to start my day! #leadupchat
A3 Just started working at the HS level this year. This completes the entire PreK-12 levels of experience for me. Never thought about being at this level in my career but enjoying every minute! Lots of new learning every day! #LeadUpChat
A3-Professionally and personally, I'm looking into getting my second masters in Educational Leadership. I feel it will make me a better teacher and counselor! I've also thought about going for my doctorate in the future as well! The sky's the limit for everyone! #leadupchat
Q4: Looking at your current professional journey, what is one big obstacle you have faced (or are currently facing?)
What is one way that you addressed this obstacle head-on?
#leadupchat
A3: Break the goal into steps - Inch by inch it’s a cinch! One step at a time and keep chopping! Celebrate success along the way. Find the JOY in your JOurneY. #leadupchat
A4: As an instructional coach, I face Ts who are cautious about changing instructional practices. I combat this by being super supportive, finding ways to "meet them where they're at," and providing opportunities for Ts to develop themselves and support one another #leadupchat

RT SimpleK12: RT DrAAlston: My book, You’re Hired: The Inside Secrets to Landing Your School #Leadership Job is a guide that coaches school and district leadership candidates through the hiring process. Check it out https://t.co/AfIIZJSln8#leadupchat #… https://t.co/CAuNrAT5w7
A4: (sorry joining late - Adam in NC) ... challenge this year as 1st year Principal has been balancing bringing in my vision for the school while understanding the time needed for change. Solution has been having transparent conversations w/ stakeholders #leadupchat
A4: Vulnerability is huge. Put myself out there for a new position. Didn't get it. I'm so lucky to already be in a job that I love - but I need to examine the path I'm on - need to be sure I'm doing the best work I can. Redefining my role. #leadupchat
A4. This is a no brained. Focus first on ‘why we are doing something’ to accelerate implemention. If we don’t understand why... we never succeed at the ‘what’ (learned from many mistakes 🤪) #leadupchat
A2: I can’t help but to agree! If we’re not willing to make tackling obstacles a part of life, we’re just setting ourselves up for disaster and a complete inability to handle trying times and adversity of any form. #leadupchat
A4: Although it has been five years, this is what hit me head on, the need to #choosejoy and be grateful in ALL things, to apologize and forgive, rinse and repeat. My #oneword this year is #vulnerability so that I can get better at trust and transparency. #leadupchat
Q3: This quote by Lao-Tzu discusses the importance of taking that first step on a big journey.
What is one professional/educational undertaking you have started (or are considering starting) this school year?
#leadupchat
A4: a current obstacle I’m facing is time. I want to push in more and work with S’s but find myself taking care of required meetings, paperwork, etc. I’m still working on finding a good balance of all of the components of my job #leadupchat
A4: In my role it is important to meet people where they are. Giving teachers the coaching and tools they need to take positive risks is avery rewarding process. #leadupchat
A4 Because my focused goal is student writing, my biggest obstacle is finding a balance between student choice writing and curricular expectations. Make sure I schedule lots of time for student choice. #leadupchat
A4: I couldn’t ever settle- literally. I couldn’t find a way to settle this vision I have for the school/ district that is based in trauma & responses for relationships at our core. I just stayed the course. I feel as tho the world & I are finally on the same page #leadupchat
A4. A big obstacle for myself was switching provinces as an administrator. It takes time to learn a new system. It’s important to appreciate your current reality, dive in and not be afraid to ask a stupid question. #leadupchat
A4 trying to find a full time admin gig without having to move. I love where I live, but living in rural Washington limits my options greatly. #LeadUpChat
RTQ4: Looking at your current professional journey, what is one big obstacle you have faced (or are currently facing?)
What is one way that you addressed this obstacle head-on?
#leadupchat
A4: I am currently facing the following question, “how do you motivate the unmotivated?”. I have been asked this a few times recently. The difficulty at my school is that I have so many high-performing Ts that they get frustrated by their less-motivated peers. #leadupchat
This year we introduced a flex period & totally revamped PD by creating PLCs that are researching various EQs. If the vision is clear & you have support from staff, you can do anything. I’ve seen remarkable things happen bc teachers were determined to make it so. #leadupchat
A3 My journey led me to peruse a big career change this year, changing districts and taking on new responsibilities. I’ve loved the challenge of every step every day! #leadupchat
A4: Although it has been five years, this is what hit me head on, the need to #choosejoy and be grateful in ALL things, to apologize and forgive, rinse and repeat. My #oneword this year is #vulnerability so that I can get better at trust and transparency. #leadupchat
A4: Reaching JH Ss that have no interest in working at all, they are not a behavioural issue in most cases but I have 2-3 that DO NOTHING even when given full choice. Nothing...Still working on this haha #LeadUpChat
Q4: Looking at your current professional journey, what is one big obstacle you have faced (or are currently facing?)
What is one way that you addressed this obstacle head-on?
#leadupchat
A4- My biggest obstacle has been leaving the Elementary world and going to the Middle School world! I've had to push myself into different instances where I've had to find different ways to connect with students! #leadupchat
A4I'm sure a common obstacle that we all have faced in education is the presence of doubters. In response to these persons, as ed leaders we are called to cast the collaborative vision, plot the course, and support our team to greatness. This usually silences doubters #leadupchat
Q4: Looking at your current professional journey, what is one big obstacle you have faced (or are currently facing?)
What is one way that you addressed this obstacle head-on?
#leadupchat
I went from the terrible math student to teaching math. It wasn’t because I became super smart overnight. It was a long process and much struggle. #leadupchat
A4 Trying to change a whole system & impact as many districts as possible. A lot of red tape and resistance. I have learned a lot about leadership, collaboration, listening and support. I always keep my eyes on progress but lead more with heart. Be there for them. #leadupchat
Q4: Looking at your current professional journey, what is one big obstacle you have faced (or are currently facing?)
What is one way that you addressed this obstacle head-on?
#leadupchat
A2: The easiest path doesn't lead to the most growth. Allowing yourself to step out of your comfort zone doesn't come without challenges but can change the outcome for you and for the students--makes it worth it! #leadupchat
I can feel your pain. I think all of our jobs are a constant juggling show and trying to find a balance between our work directly with students and our required expectations. #leadupchat
It is definitely a mind shift. Have rolled it out twice now in two different districts. Lots of resistance both times. It takes time for them for them to see its value and importance. #leadupchat
A4 Getting past the pushback about going gradeless has been a real challenge. Not pushback from Ss, but from Ts. When you ask people to examine their practices, sometimes they get downright ugly! #leadupchat
A4: In a new position and new district since July. One obstacle/challenge is building relationships while also working to improve. Have to remind myself to slow down and be patient and seek to understand. Not easy for me when I get excited about ideas. #leadupchat
A4:Currently, what keeps me up at night is leaving a building and staff that I LOVE because our district is making one of our buildings a PreK center, which is a great idea! I'll just miss the dynamic, caring, compassionate Ts. #leadupchat@mccall_kelley
A4: this year have really had to learn when to not push and disrupt and when to close my mouth and go with the flow even if I don’t agree—tough for me #leadupchat
A4: Fear is usually the greatest obstacle. Constant communication and reassurance, celebration of success, and getting your hands dirty are the best solutions. And sometimes just time is needed while you stay the course. #leadupchat
A4: When I started my #gamification journey there were doubters and naysayers. Thankfully I took the advice of Brené Brown and it has been an incredible success!Ill do whatever necessary for my Ss to succeed and enjoy school! #leadupchat
A4: one obstacle I face, even as an undergrad, is knowing I won't be able to help every student out there that needs help. But knowing there are other great teachers out there (everyone in this chat!) makes ne feel a bit better. #leadupchat
A4: Timing as odd as it may seem. I am looking to move to an assistant principal position next year. Some years there are several openings and some years there are none. I know when the time it right it will all work out. #leadupchat
A4 Overcoming the challenges of finding balance in the constraints of time is an obstacle. We must balance learning, growing, supporting, family, and a variety of other needs. Moving this big bus forward for Ss is no easy task. #leadupchat
A4: My greatest challenge: I want to be a powerful voice for change in my community & education! I want to change and inspire the world! I want to be the hope and inspiration for children & educators everywhere! I don’t want to let anyone down! I don’t want to fail! #leadupchat
A2: More often than not, what is best for kids means taking risks, changing the status quo and making things uncomfortable. It’s a never ending cycle. The moment things become comfortable, it’s usually time to shake things up again! #leadupchat
A4: Having tough conversations. It’s uncomfortable but I’ve learned to take my time and choose my words carefully. I’m also trying to listen more while making sure those conversations stay focused on the issue. #leadupchat
A4: Limited opportunities and a district-level complacency has pushed me to open myself up to all 50 states for career and doctorate.
I’m also thinking beyond traditional roles in order to bring radical opportunity to the traditional American education paradigm. #leadupchat
A4: For me the biggest obstacle has been grades. Started Project 180, my blog, https://t.co/HaV7dSjVfW 2 years ago to turn grading upside down. Still learning. Still searching for better. #leadupchat
Like the piece about casting your vision, Abe. Essential that we solicit the input of our stakeholders and engage their perspectives on how to enrich our goals to support Ss #leadupchat
Q3: This quote by Lao-Tzu discusses the importance of taking that first step on a big journey.
What is one professional/educational undertaking you have started (or are considering starting) this school year?
#leadupchat
A4 My big obstacle is balancing my many hats. I 💖💖💖 empowering students and teachers...it consumes me. I need to be there for my friends and family, too. I am more than an educator. I am more than an educator. I am more than an educator #leadupchat
RTQ4: Looking at your current professional journey, what is one big obstacle you have faced (or are currently facing?)
What is one way that you addressed this obstacle head-on?
#leadupchat
Yeah. I just wrote the proposal, which needs a lot of refining. I liked doing the research, but writing and follow the format, I found to be challenging. Good thing I still have time to collect the data and work on it. #Leadupchat
SO true. In the name of accountability, we often forget the core of our business is growing PEOPLE, small ones and big ones. Leading with heart takes longer, but produces sustainable success! #leadupchat
A4: Biggest obstacle was overcoming leadership adversity and navigating through adult dissonance. Current obstacle is instilling urgency for change. Often times adult issues clog up the system. Our students deserve future-minded resilient educators!! #LeadUpChat
A4 Also, being in a district where PD is not differentiated or personalized. It is frustrating that I don't get any credit for the reading and work on my instruction that I do on my own. #leadupchat
A4: Campus moral after a district reconfiguration. Not ignoring the elephant in the room and being open/transparent has been huge in starting a shift out of the rut. I am confident we will get there. #leadupchat
I really believe in the power of the NUDGE and example-- it may take more time but little steps are still steps in the right direction. Celebrate along the way and acknowledge strengths. I get it! But Ts will never be inspired by more done TO them- work WITH them #leadupchat
A4: I am currently facing the following question, “how do you motivate the unmotivated?”. I have been asked this a few times recently. The difficulty at my school is that I have so many high-performing Ts that they get frustrated by their less-motivated peers. #leadupchat
A4. I think truly realizing/respecting we all have many different viewpoints..No longer will I take any of the differences personally ..Eventhough in our field, Student Learning is very personal to me...
#leadupchat
A4: I left the classroom in May to pursue an administrative role in education & I miss having students more than words can describe. To keep myself in a healthy mindset, I remind myself my current work affects an exponential number of students instead of a handful. #leadupchat
Q4: Looking at your current professional journey, what is one big obstacle you have faced (or are currently facing?)
What is one way that you addressed this obstacle head-on?
#leadupchat
A4 ~ Conversations with Ts that were my colleagues...luckily I always focus on S learning and understanding! Difficult to argue against our common goal of S success! #leadupchat
A4: one of the biggest obstacles was a battle in my own mind. I’ve been ready to raise my white flag on many occasions, fearing I couldn’t make a lasting difference. I’ve 👊🏼 this by taking my thoughts back, and knowing I’m planting a seeds - the harvest is ahead. #leadupchat
A4: A vast amount of people who I have spoke to about my career choice are unsupportive thinking that I will be unsatisfied. However, conversations like these make me so excited to finish up my education and be apart of such a great field. #leadupchat#CEP416

A4-It is time to become innovating and stop spinning the wheels in the mud. Doing might make us take a step back but moving is this direction will be big for our kids in the long run. #leadupchat
We have transformed our school into an amazing learning culture where most of us are constantly sharing and growing. This is year 5 and there are still some who just don’t jump on board. I just keep encouraging the rockstars. #leadupchat
A4: The biggest obstacle right now is how to encourage the majority of my teachers who are positive, student-centered and life long learners to have louder voices then their colleagues in the minority who are negative and closed minded. #LeadUpChat
Q5: There are times we face an obstacle that makes us want to turn around.
How do you overcome that little voice that tells you to just give up? What do you do to keep moving forward when you are tired and overwhelmed?
#leadupchat
A4: Submitting an RFP during the first six weeks on the job! I would describe it as an opportunity more than an obstacle. A great opportunity to collaborate with new colleagues and bring new ideas to the table. #leadupchat
Understand your point, Jonathan. Because of our great passion for this work, we constantly desire to get in the middle of the action and support our team. #leadupchat
A4: I love teaching soft skills more than content. But Because of a preoccupation with assessing curricular content, valuable lessons sometimes go unaddressed. I couldn't continue to watch that happen so I wrote a book about it! #leadupchat
Q4: I changed jobs, but I am choosing to view it as an opportunity rather than a challenge. I think our perception of the situation we are in can either make us stressed or motivated. It all depends on the way you frame it in your head. #leadupchat
A4: young & have only served in alternative settings. I have very little experience in the "traditional" setting. I have worked w/ through Twitter groups & working w/collegues in the traditional setting to better understand the day to day operation. Id love to shadow
#leadupchat
I’ma new principal in a long standing community, w/ amazing staff. Being the new guy brings challenges & is the biggest obstacle. Being true to myself & trying to be transparent in my process/authentic in relationships & doing what’s best for kids has been my approach #LeadUpChat
Q4: Looking at your current professional journey, what is one big obstacle you have faced (or are currently facing?)
What is one way that you addressed this obstacle head-on?

Thanks! My #sped Ss had a major part in this. I had to learn it to help them. I kept getting further sucked into the world of math all in order to help them. #leadupchat
Q3: This quote by Lao-Tzu discusses the importance of taking that first step on a big journey.
What is one professional/educational undertaking you have started (or are considering starting) this school year?
#leadupchat
A4: As a MS having 7 periods per day...finding that extra time and using creative scheduling to continue with Exploratory Clubs mid day! Cooking, coding, robotics, yoga, running club, aerospace, broadcasting, etc. Important stuff! #leadupchat
A4- Another obstacle is finding my limits. Sometimes I feel I have too many ideas and try to do too many things at once.. Balance and understanding of myself is needed! #leadupchat
Q4: Looking at your current professional journey, what is one big obstacle you have faced (or are currently facing?)
What is one way that you addressed this obstacle head-on?
#leadupchat
Absolutely Amy! Most leaders r pleasers when we start out. hardest thing 2 do is learn how 2 address within ourselves the discomfort of the ‘no’ fallout. people have forgotten what it’s like to hear no from educators. Stay strong in YOUR resolve! #leadupchat
A4) The biggest obstacle I’ve faced has been engaging the disengaged. Whether it is students, parents, or employees, it has been a struggle to meet them where they are and help them. I’ve hosted events, gathers, & held f2f mtgs. #leadupchat

A5: This is where I am RIGHT now. When I thought I knew the path, but clearly did not - and left with the feeling of "what now?". That voice is persistent. My one word is Passion and I'm committed to rediscovering - this work is too important to give up! #leadupchat
Q5: There are times we face an obstacle that makes us want to turn around.
How do you overcome that little voice that tells you to just give up? What do you do to keep moving forward when you are tired and overwhelmed?
#leadupchat
Currently I am taking the path of least resistance. Forget about compliance on everything and assess what I can. When they enter LA with " I am not fricken reading or writing today..." We have a hill to climb lol #leadupchat
A4: To continue to stay fresh and forward thinking and make sure that all actions, decisions, and planning is improving the odds for all of our students to be successful. #LeadUpChat

That was my ‘One Word’ a couple of years ago and I learned that it is more like harmony than balance. But, now I am struggling to find a balance as I am in a new position. It is getting there and need to be more deliberate about planning my time. #LeadUpChat
A4: My obstacle is the inflexibility of the edu system. I’ve had to do a lot of thinking outside of the box to get my #Sped Ss see they are more than their grades. It’s a struggle getting them to see their strengths and keep persevering. #leadupchat
A5 I have to step back when I start getting worn down. Get away from social media, read a novel, go running or hiking. If I keep plugging away, I start down a spiral of defeatism. #leadupchat
Q3: This quote by Lao-Tzu discusses the importance of taking that first step on a big journey.

Love the fact that you differentiate for teachers by meeting them where they're at. I'm sure they appreciate your willingness to tailor your coaching to their needs! It's all about guiding others from wherever they are to the next step of efficacy. Nice work! #leadupchat
Q5: There are times we face an obstacle that makes us want to turn around.
How do you overcome that little voice that tells you to just give up? What do you do to keep moving forward when you are tired and overwhelmed?

A5: 1. A strong, supportive spouse. 2. A best friend or colleague who gives you honesty while being one of your biggest cheerleaders. 3. Taking time to be mindful. 4. Constantly question and investigate your choices to learn, adjust, and grow (lifelong learning!) #leadupchat
A5: Whenever I get to those moments that make me question my career path I RUN to a classroom and hang out with the Ss. They are my daily reminder of why I do what I do. #LeadUpChat

A5: The only way to fail is to quit. I just remind myself of that in those moments of self-doubt. I think it is also important to do a self-check that what you are doing is the RIGHT thing to do. Plus, a little Tom Petty "Won't Back Down" playing in the earbuds helps! #leadupchat

RT @BarbaraGruener: A3: I have been researching, learning, and collecting resources for everything #mindfulness, to help our school family stay in the moment, fully present, without judgement, and thriving. Start small, end BIG! #leadupchathttps://t.co/0LkeB4e7CQ
A3: I started a big push with Digital Citizenship for the School. I put up posters with QR codes that played videos for Ss about cyber bullying and I held a faculty meeting over the proper use of social media in the classroom. #leadupchat

Q5: OWN IT. Whatever it is, own it. If it’s working, point that out and forge on. If it’s failing, kill it and figure out a new path. Words to remember: if your going to fail, fail fast, and forge forward. #Leadupchat
I think it's a societal issue as well. Parents, community members, those in positions of power to control our schools are all looking at the score and how it can be moved. We have to focus on celebrating those successes that aren't numerical as well.
#leadupchat
A5: When I’m feeling overwhelmed, I step away and do something fun for a while. At school, that means spending time with kids inside and outside of the classroom. At home, that means to turn the work off and turn the TV on! #guiltypleasure#leadupchat
Q5: There are times we face an obstacle that makes us want to turn around.
How do you overcome that little voice that tells you to just give up? What do you do to keep moving forward when you are tired and overwhelmed?
#leadupchat
A5: turn to my PLN. Jump on @voxer and connect with someone I can bounce things off and will pump me back up to help me keep moving forward #leadupchat
I have colleagues who are burned out too. The key I've found is to listen and and make new learning relevant to their particular needs. But it's because of my relationships that ppl really move forward :) #preachingtochoirhere#leadupchat
A5: I also find that connecting with motivated and inspiring educators really helps lift me up. I jump on Twitter and get inspired. I talk with my colleagues who amaze me daily. That helps my self-talk a bit and helps reignite some passion! #leadupchat
I’ve been there a lot this year as a new principal. At the end of the day I have to remember my “why” and that I’m Team Kid. I also lean on the people around me who are my solid support system like my family, my mentors and PLN. And I spend a lot of time at the gym. #LeadUpChat

A5: 1- seek out ppl who do what I do and talk to them to help me keep my perspective positive and 2- reflect on and recognize the small things that are going right- there is ALWAYS something going right, sometimes we just have to look a little harder to find it #leadupchat
A4: I struggle with meeting the abundance of Social/Emotional needs my students have that impact their learning. Making our building and our staff the consistency and safe haven that allows them to be a child, trust, feel cared for and as result open to learning. #leadupchat
A5. I turn to my friends and PLN. When in doubt, when I feel overcome or beaten down, I seek advice. When I push too hard, I have my peeps that will bring me back to reality. A support system and network is so important to learning and leading. #leadupchat

A5: We have such an easy way to be reminded of why we do what we do - go to a classroom, sit with Ss at lunch, visit the playground. And also reach out to a peer - remember that you aren’t alone. We all have moments of self-doubt and wondering if we can go on. #leadupchat

What I proposed was invited them to participate in the form of a panel where I would ask them questions and the Ts would be listening. I would like to then have the Ts ask questions afterward. Still working that out. #leadupchat
A3: we developed an Admin team book study partnering book study protocols & procedures w/ learning tools to guide our transformation to create “Art” as leaders #leadupchat
A4: Maintaining an authentic emphasis on LEARNING while working in a profession that has historical structures that necessitate Teach/Test/Move on. #leadupchat

A5 surround yourself with positive, smart, compassionate people who believe in you. I couldn't do it without them, especially my wife. She's my number one fan. #leadupchat
A5 Take a step back and go to the track. I try to remember my passions and to show #gratitude for the important things. Reflect on the next step and start again. #leadupchat
A5An excellent approach to combat that voice is to engage with our Ss, visit their classrooms, and see them work. When we connect with them and see their progress, as a result of our support, we are encouraged to move forward to create environments that help them grow #leadupchat

A3 Our school is blessed to be a #dpvils school. This is Year 1. Our challenge is to change the mindset & truly LEVERAGE tech to reach #EveryChild. Personalized learning is our goal at every step of the ed process. But boy, it’s not easy! Q2 sums up those challenges. #leadupchat
A5: When I’m feeling overwhelmed by obstacles, often I am just very tired and need a nap or a good night’s rest. In the morning, I usually feel better. Then I go hang out in a Kindergarten class to learn from those curious, passionate kids who remind me why I’m here #leadupchat

A5: I always ask myself “if you won’t, then who will?” This career is a calling. If you’re not there for the hard stuff...the heart stuff...then you don’t get to be there for the good stuff. #leadupchat
Q5: There are times we face an obstacle that makes us want to turn around.
How do you overcome that little voice that tells you to just give up? What do you do to keep moving forward when you are tired and overwhelmed?
#leadupchat
A5: I often take a moment to appreciate all I have and all I am working towards. My largest motivator is picturing my first day as an educator to help remind myself of all the joy I will feel as my first students enter into the classroom. #leadupchat#CEP416
Q5: There are times we face an obstacle that makes us want to turn around.
How do you overcome that little voice that tells you to just give up? What do you do to keep moving forward when you are tired and overwhelmed?
#leadupchat
A5: I practice gratitude. I’m a firm believer there’s only so much space in a brain. If you fill it up with abundance and positive thoughts, there’s no room for the negative. And again - 90s rap! #leadupchat
A5: I have wonderful, supportive colleagues (and an awesome coteacher - we even do dinner each Monday) and a patience husband who also teaches ELA. Picking up a PD book or coming to Twitter can push back in a positive direction too #leadupchat
Q5: There are times we face an obstacle that makes us want to turn around.
How do you overcome that little voice that tells you to just give up? What do you do to keep moving forward when you are tired and overwhelmed?
#leadupchat
A5: This goes back to taking charge of our though life. We can think differently. I know I am not alone in impacting a child in his journey. I’m one part, and it’s critical, but not alone. #leadupchat
Q5: There are times we face an obstacle that makes us want to turn around.
How do you overcome that little voice that tells you to just give up? What do you do to keep moving forward when you are tired and overwhelmed?
#leadupchat
A5An excellent approach to combat that voice is to engage with our Ss, visit their classrooms, and see them work. When we connect with them and see their progress, as a result of our support, we are encouraged to move forward to create environments that help them grow #leadupchat
Q5: There are times we face an obstacle that makes us want to turn around.
How do you overcome that little voice that tells you to just give up? What do you do to keep moving forward when you are tired and overwhelmed?
#leadupchat
A5: I got transferred to our sister school 3 years ago and I resisted leaving my school family, my comfort zone. I felt like I was buried. Then I saw THIS reframe. And I reflected and talked and wrote to help me believe it. Now I'm thriving and it's no longer dark. #leadupchat
Q5: There are times we face an obstacle that makes us want to turn around.
How do you overcome that little voice that tells you to just give up? What do you do to keep moving forward when you are tired and overwhelmed?
#leadupchat
A5: I remind myself not to make big decisions when I am in the eye of the storm. Reflection, praying about it, talking about it with a trusted friend, have worked for me. #leadupchat
Right! I discovered one of my Ss is an incredible salesman. I saw him at our bake skill. He never thought of it as a skill. For his Eng class, I’m having him write a blog on tips for young entrepreneurs. He’s really into it. #leadupchat
A5 Take a step back and go to the track. I try to remember my passions and to show #gratitude for the important things. Reflect on the next step and start again. #leadupchat
A5: Because Doubt has taken up permanent residence on my left shoulder, I have had to adopt and use my Do. Reflect. Do Better. mantra. When I face those doubt-induced turn arounds, I reflect, seeking better. Hope, my right shoulder resident, feeds off reflection. #leadupchat
A5: In addition to teaching, I run an after-school program for at-risk high school kids. The work seems insurmountable, but one of my kids (because they are mine) will come to me & share a win, tell me thank you, or give me a hug. Then I’m ready to get back to it! #leadupchat
Q5: There are times we face an obstacle that makes us want to turn around.
How do you overcome that little voice that tells you to just give up? What do you do to keep moving forward when you are tired and overwhelmed?
#leadupchat
A5: FIND and LEAN on your tribe! These people are pivotal in my personal and professional life! Love and appreciate them DAILY..we keep each other going! #leadupchat
A5: Never cease. Never quit. Don’t fall without getting up, never waiver from this goal you call it. There are days that are bleak & create doubt; but the goals & hope we have shall never run out! Get it! Got it! GOOD!! #leadupchat
A5: I put my trust in God! I look back at and see where I have come and I know that he is FAITHFUL -and then look forward at the obstacle/mountain ahead and know he is ABLE, to lead me through! #greaterishethatisinme@elevation_wrsh#leadupchat
A5: I am truly blessed to be surrounded by awesome staff, admin, that are peers, friends, mentors. They call me, stop over and check on me. Means the world continues to fuel the fire. Thinking of my family and my school family as well, is my ultimate motivation! #LeadUpChat
Q5: There are times we face an obstacle that makes us want to turn around.
How do you overcome that little voice that tells you to just give up? What do you do to keep moving forward when you are tired and overwhelmed?
#leadupchat
This is so important to promote resiliency in students and staff. We must feel that is ok to fail, but the focus on celebrations should be in the process of learning, not the failure itself. #leadupchat
A2: Going to take a moment to self-promote because I think this question applies to my @TedX Talk, “Our Schools Should Teach Kids to Fail”. #leadupchathttps://t.co/VndG3yikVe
Q5: There are times we face an obstacle that makes us want to turn around.
How do you overcome that little voice that tells you to just give up? What do you do to keep moving forward when you are tired and overwhelmed?

I need to get back to @voxer - I need to find a group to connect with there - it's been a while for me and the groups I used to interact with routinely have sort of fizzled... #leadupchat
Q6: Rarely do we overcome obstacles alone.
How has your PLN helped you (or how can they help you) overcome a particularly challenging obstacle?
#leadupchat
A5: I got transferred to our sister school 3 years ago and I resisted leaving my school family, my comfort zone. I felt like I was buried. Then I saw THIS reframe. And I reflected and talked and wrote to help me believe it. Now I'm thriving and it's no longer dark. #leadupchat
A5: in times of doubt, there are a few people in my life that don't even have to say anything to encourage me to keep going- I just know I have to keep going not only for myself but for them too. #leadupchat
Q5: There are times we face an obstacle that makes us want to turn around.
How do you overcome that little voice that tells you to just give up? What do you do to keep moving forward when you are tired and overwhelmed?
#leadupchat
A5: At all times be Relentlessly positive and Positively relentless! Your decision to do this is made a long time before the adversity shows up. At that time you are executing the plan, not making decisions already decided. #leadupchat
A5: I think of times I gave up& what it cost me. I think&ask myself do I want to feel that way again? Its not easier to say no because the path that leads to failure is easy¬ scary. Then I think I have kids looking up to me & I have to facs the guy in the mirror.
#leadupchat
A5: People need me to do what is right. Parents count on a school that is optimally functioning. Kids count on being safe, cared for, and challenged. Teachers count on being supported and satisfied with their work. There's too much in the mix to just give up. #leadupchat
A5: I've found leaning on those trust networks in the school help out. It definitely can be an isolated feeling at times on top, so finding those you can chat with is important. Lately, I've been keeping up with the #FitLeaders movement. This is a motivation too. #leadupchat
A4: my biggest hurdle was my feelings of unappreciation for what I do. I had to accept that as long as *I* was proud and appreciative of what I do, then I have to find joy and comfort in that. Yes it’s great to receive it from others but I had to be ok w/o it #leadupchat
Q4: Looking at your current professional journey, what is one big obstacle you have faced (or are currently facing?)
What is one way that you addressed this obstacle head-on?
#leadupchat
a6| From a P perspective, a PLN are people who may have experienced what you have, or have tools to work through your obstacle and can help. #leadupchat
Q6: Rarely do we overcome obstacles alone.
How has your PLN helped you (or how can they help you) overcome a particularly challenging obstacle?
#leadupchat
A6: My PLN has given me a great opportunity to learn from others. So many educators have great thoughts and resources. It has also given a platform to share. #leadupchat
A5: Be intentional about my mindset & attitude. Don't worry about others' attitudes & expectations but focus on my own & how my behaviors affect others. Doing so impacts how I feel, which impacts how I act & how others act. @casas_jimmy#Culturize#leadupchat
A5-There have been many times that I've wanted to give up, to the extent where I was ready to seek new opportunities. Then, I had to stop and think "Why am I here?" There's a reason I've been placed where I am, and I find that purpose through prayer and connection. #leadupchat
Q5: There are times we face an obstacle that makes us want to turn around.
How do you overcome that little voice that tells you to just give up? What do you do to keep moving forward when you are tired and overwhelmed?
#leadupchat
A5: When things get hard for me, I re-read my highlighted favorite lines in books that remind me this job is all about kids! I remind myself that my job is my choice. My attitude is my choice. I look for the small wins in the day. #leadupchat
A5: I will echo what so many have already shared--turn to others. We are #bettertogether. The MYTH of the lone teacher saving the world (as depicted in so many movies) is just that--a myth. Effective collaboration is the key. #leadupchat
Q5: There are times we face an obstacle that makes us want to turn around.
How do you overcome that little voice that tells you to just give up? What do you do to keep moving forward when you are tired and overwhelmed?
#leadupchat
A6: I'm not sure that my PLN could ever know the impact it has on me. Just by connecting through things like #leadupchat I feel more empowered to face and overcome obstacles! We are so good for each other!
Q6: Rarely do we overcome obstacles alone.
How has your PLN helped you (or how can they help you) overcome a particularly challenging obstacle?
#leadupchat
Absolutely. It’s not about celebrating the failure but understand that it is a major part of learning. Change the narrative about what failure has typically been perceived. #leadupchat
Great thought and so true! Have to keep thinking out of the box and building on the work that we have honored. In terms of initiatives, programs, and whatever the hot item is truly trying to stay focused on the main thing: What is best for our kids. #LeadUpChat
I have to say the same! So much support and inspiration and I am forever grateful for my PLN each and every day! Helped me survive a difficult path on my journey! Thanks to all! #leadupchat#sldunktank#leadlap#tlap
Q5: There are times we face an obstacle that makes us want to turn around.
How do you overcome that little voice that tells you to just give up? What do you do to keep moving forward when you are tired and overwhelmed?
#leadupchat
A5b: It’s important to know what fuels you. What strengthens you. I make time every week for pleasure reading. I work closely with a handful of truly amazing teachers who support me, and I support them. We know when one of us needs help or a break. #leadupchat#teacherbesties
Some has to save this because I tend to be forgetful. My wife could speak more on this subject. How she has put up with me all these years is testimony of perseverance. 😂 #leadupchat
Q6: Rarely do we overcome obstacles alone.
How has your PLN helped you (or how can they help you) overcome a particularly challenging obstacle?
#leadupchat
A6: I just recently created a PLN, and this is the first time I'm really using it. I feel like when I finally start to teach and have a lot of questions, this could really help me! Plus, connections are always helpful. #leadupchat
Can't love this one enough! We are truly #bettertogether! And when we find ourselves needing to take credit for the work accomplished (sort of that lone teacher saves the world thing) we gotta go. We're in it for the wrong reasons!

A6: With Twitter alone I have the hands of so many to help guide me. Some are "experts" others are in my exact position. All have meaningful things to add. #LeadUpChat
Q6: Rarely do we overcome obstacles alone.
How has your PLN helped you (or how can they help you) overcome a particularly challenging obstacle?
#leadupchat
A5 No doubt, been a tough year. What keeps me going when I’m at the lowest of my low is when I see my kiddos becoming better people because of the influence of their T’s. Our T’s work so hard &give so much. They truly live & breathe the job. No data point shows that. #leadupchat
A5 I recently had this experience & here’s what I did... Looked at & examined what seemed insurmountable, got input & advice from key stakholders & trusted colleagues, broke it down into a timeline of manageable tasks, and now I’m tackling them one at a time! #leadupchat
This is an impressive vulnerability to share. I’ve been through the same and know many others who are in the same boat. It’s hard to pour your heart/soul into what you do each day and not feel appreciated. Keep doing the good work. It’s not always said but is felt. #leadupchat
A6: When you surround yourself with a positive support network who understand your challenges, you live a more positive life. Total game changer! #leadupchat
RTQ6: Rarely do we overcome obstacles alone.
How has your PLN helped you (or how can they help you) overcome a particularly challenging obstacle?
#leadupchat
A6: a true PLN is there to help you through thick and thin. I know I can depend on those in my group and turn to them and support them when they need it as well #leadupchat
A6 My PLN has helped me overcome difficult times. They listen, advise, support. Voxer, texts, Twitter are awesome. They push me to reach higher, to achieve new goals. They even cross states to support. My PLN is indescribable. I am beyond blessed. #leadupchat
Q6: Rarely do we overcome obstacles alone.
How has your PLN helped you (or how can they help you) overcome a particularly challenging obstacle?
#leadupchat
A6: My PLN has broadened my paradigm by shrinking the distance between me and some trailblazers across the globe! I’m thankful for the treasures within reach. #leadupchat
The ‘system’ has tried to dehumanize our profession and ‘business-ify’ if. Fighting that paradigm is likely the heart of our work as leaders in education #keeponkeeping#bringit#leadupchat
Yes, but my husband's retired and does all my housework, shopping, and is basically my "manager." So I envision myself back in the day at home with young children and sympathy wells up inside for someone trying to do both. #leadupchat
A3: Reading for prof growth whenever I have the opportunity. Also working with staff to foster independence and next generation scaffolding during lit block so students can transfer what they learn while working in text on their own. It takes time, pd, and planning! #leadupchat
Q3: This quote by Lao-Tzu discusses the importance of taking that first step on a big journey.
What is one professional/educational undertaking you have started (or are considering starting) this school year?
#leadupchat
A5: This is when https://t.co/B6KTwFN2sc pushes me past myself! And now that I’m growing my #PLN I’m getting a fire back that had become smoldering embers. #leadupchat

Q6: Rarely do we overcome obstacles alone.
How has your PLN helped you (or how can they help you) overcome a particularly challenging obstacle?
#leadupchat
I have to think positively and give options. We are small - less than 10 of us - so it gets tricky, although you would think it would be easier. #leadupchat
Q6: Rarely do we overcome obstacles alone.
How has your PLN helped you (or how can they help you) overcome a particularly challenging obstacle?
#leadupchat
A6b: I am blessed to work with @awelcome and therefore can get pumped out at any point in the day/night. Find the like-minded pumper uppers and you can get past anything #leadupchat
A2: If your not making mistakes, you are not doing anything. A doer makes mistakes. Life’s greatest triumphs come from overcoming obstacles. #leadupchat
Q6: Rarely do we overcome obstacles alone.
How has your PLN helped you (or how can they help you) overcome a particularly challenging obstacle?
#leadupchat
A6: Only teamwork can make the dream work. There is always a better way to be able to do something, and most of the time it's not yours. LOL #LeadUpChat
A6: its great to see what everyone is doing. It motivates me, challenges me, and reminds that Im doing a lot of things right. Its cool seeing a lot of twitter rock stars!
#leadupchat
A6: This is major benefit of being a Connected Educator. Being a principal can be extremely lonely - connecting with others living the role helps you to realize that you aren’t alone. #leadupchat
Q6: Rarely do we overcome obstacles alone.
How has your PLN helped you (or how can they help you) overcome a particularly challenging obstacle?
#leadupchat
True! I’ve seen so many people jump on the growth mindset bandwagon without understanding the science behind it thinking we should celebrate failure itself. That doesn’t shape the mind. It’s about learning as a never ending process! #leadupchat
A6: Work needs witness. Our PLN’s become our witnesses. And as they are witness to our journey, our struggles, our triumphs, they are able to lift us when we need it. But we have to share our work, our struggles, our successes. #tg2chat has been that for me. #leadupchat
A6: My Twitter PLN is always inspiring. I love reading their positive messages and suggestions for great books and strategies. My in-person PLN offers emotional support and feedback for next steps when an obstacle presents itself. Would not be here without both #leadupchat
A6: MyPLN has helped me put myself out there by presenting at conferences and joining global edcamps. They helped me when I was letting the negativity of others rub off on me. #leadupchat
A6: it’s the energy I get from my PLN that saves me! I always walk away with a new & exciting idea. It’s a breath of fresh air when you’re around so many positive & upbeat educators! #leadupchat
A6 My PLN is invaluable in this process. Whether it’s to vent, have an unbiased ear to bounce ideas off of, talk me off the ledge or encourage me, or to borrow or steal ideas from. @NowakRo@KateAshmore@principalkp I find myself doing this w/ often #LeadUpChat
Q6: Rarely do we overcome obstacles alone.
How has your PLN helped you (or how can they help you) overcome a particularly challenging obstacle?
#leadupchat
A6: At the lowest possible point of my career I was literally revived back to life by @RickJetter . Social media access to a new PLN altered the course of my career, perspective and life. #forevergrateful#sldunktank#leadupchat
Q6: Rarely do we overcome obstacles alone.
How has your PLN helped you (or how can they help you) overcome a particularly challenging obstacle?
#leadupchat
There’s something abt knowing that all over this country there are ppl working their tails off for kids, refining what we do, and pushing for excellence. That feeling of collective purpose reminds me that I don’t have to fix everything but just do the work before me. #leadupchat
A4: The biggest obstacle right now is how to encourage the majority of my teachers who are positive, student-centered and life long learners to have louder voices then their colleagues in the minority who are negative and closed minded. #LeadUpChat
A6: The ideas, experiences, and positive way educators WANT each other to succeed helps clarify and strengthen my call to education. Recently, I questioned my ability to truly change the paradigm of education and it has been my PLN that help me work through the doubt. #leadupchat
A6: I thrive on having friends to bounce things off of, friends who call or text to check on me, cyberspace collaborators who reach out with a problem I can help them solve or an offer to help me with something. Together we're better is more than just a mantra. #leadupchat
A5: I focus on my WHY. The students that are counting on me to care for them, support them and advocate for them. So many others have given up on them. I refuse to. #leadupchat
When it’s about kids, it’s about communities and your the hope for change, your the hope of difference - there is no quit! I’ll go until I can’t go no more, I got one more round! #leadupchat
A6-I'm thankful to work with great teachers, staff, and administrators, whom I can go to with anything! They are great mentors and examples for me. Also, joining Twitter has given me the opportunity to connect with so many people across the world! #leadupchat
A5: Knowing my why iimportant. I also spend daily time in prayer to start my day and remember to practice gratitude for all the good things and people in my life. Stop looking at all the negative. #leadupchat#JoyfulLeaders
A6. There are so many ways to Learn from wonderful people like all of you..I hear different viewpoints that challenge me every day, new ideas, chats, book clubs, read great blogs and sometimes just have fun chatting with PLN tribe #leadupchat
"Work needs witness" LOVE it! Yes, our PLN truly gives witness to the work and helps us celebrate both the beautiful failures and the awesome triumphs! #leadupchat
A6: Work needs witness. Our PLN’s become our witnesses. And as they are witness to our journey, our struggles, our triumphs, they are able to lift us when we need it. But we have to share our work, our struggles, our successes. #tg2chat has been that for me. #leadupchat
Thank you so much for joining me this morning for #leadupchat! Join us next week as my buddy @PrincipalPaul brings on a new @leadupnow series "Upstream: Facing the Currents"
Oh I’m definitely a north too! I’ve learned though that we have some of all of the compass directions in us. The best leaders will learn to develop the deficit areas instead of just staying in their dominant domain. #leadupchat
