#K12ArtChat is an #ArtsEd chat that happens every Thurs 8:30 pm CST founded by #TeamGrundler @ArtGuy76 & @GrundlerArt & share Ss' art on Fridays via #FabArtsFri.
As we begin the school year w/excitement, energy & passion, we know there will be days when our teaching tank is almost on E. When our minds go in a 1000 different directions & we feel our stress & anxiety building, sometimes it helps to be mindful of our 5 sense. #k12ArtChat
#k12artchat A1 Image that calms me, eh? My #DronePhotograpny fits the bill.. in the photo I’m experimenting with a way to get a drone carrying a 360 camera without crashing into the ground.. creative problem solving rocks.
A1 the road I ran along this summer in Ireland. Time to relax and enjoy the sights, sounds, smells and the feel of the ocean wind on my face. #k12ArtChat
Q2 Being present in the moment to hear all the sounds that surround us can calm a racing mind fretting about the past or anxious for the future. #K12artchat

A1 I am three weeks back to work and a whole week into school with kiddos and I am SO GLAD I started a meditation practice before it all kicked off inspired by the #mindfullness practices @NAEA#SAL2018 this summer! ❤️❤️❤️this book/program #experiment1#k12artchat
A1- I don’t find it hard tuning out the noise of Social Media. To tune it out, I Turn it off, and pop open a book, such as my book on Coins, sorting thru my rare coinage & loose change & researching them. It’s therapeutic #K12ArtChat or I open my chess set, studying strategies
#k12artchat A2a My granddaughter Lily is over a lot.. it’s easy to make time to play with her. A couple weekends ago we had some major laughs at the local #HomeDepot.. in the photo someone caught us in the act of checking out.
A1: Tuning out noise is SO difficult! There is always something to watch, see, compare or respond to. I like to find some stillness early in the morning w/ my coffee while the house is quite & in afternoon yoga - these 2 things are an introverted teacher’s lifeline! #k12artchat

A2: I put my music on and block out all the surrounding noise. Also, I use my commute between schools, I just listen to silence in the car. #K12ArtChat
I forgot to include an image that calms me. I usually try to make it to an art museum when I'm stressed, so here's my favorite piece on exhibit at the San Jose Art Museum right now. It's by Hung Liu. #k12artchat

#k12artchat A2c Saturdays (some Fridays) are my #DronePhotography days.. for the most part I fly far from other people and routers. The other day I took this photo.. I’m mesmerized at how erosion formed that #crosshatch pattern. I block out time to take pix & seek patterns.
A3 I lost my dad a little over a year ago to cancer. He was everything to me. Courage can be simply facing the day that lies ahead. One day at a time. Courage lies within us all, we just need find it. #k12ArtChat

A2 starting at a new school I feel that expectations are high. Emails, curriculum, new room, google classroom. I went back to meditation and realized I wanted to teach art b/c I wanted to make stuff with others.#K12ArtChat
A2 Turn off the phone and be present with my family! It helps that my classroom is a dead cell zone. So, my only social media time is after school, after kids bedtime, after hubby goes to bed. #K12ArtChat
A2: when I’m exercising, my phone is either on the running app or in the gym locker. I only concentrate on me for a while. Also, when I work on my art I zone in on my work. That is very important. #k12ArtChat
A2- When I get knocked down, personally & professionally, a visit to my sister/ brother-in-laws house in my hometown in Ohio, playing with my nieces (4 & 6) always does the trick for me #K12ArtChat there’s no place quite like home
#k12artchat A3a One Sunday in ’72 Papa let me drive the family to services at the Immaculate Conception Church in Colton, CA.. driving his ’69 Ford Ranger truck I passed up two wide gates and went in the smallest, thereby denting the passenger side door & ripping off a mirror +
#k12artchat A3b If I was going to go anywhere (pun intended) I had to get behind the wheel again.. thankfully Papa had some experience with situations like this (I was kid number 6) so it worked out. It was the last church I ever ran into, too.
A3- If I didn’t have patience at school, then I shouldn’t be there! #K12ArtChat think about ALL that our students deal with, in their own lives at home. Why would they need someone else who has no patience for them?!
Hello #K12ArtChat I’m TIm, an #art & #media teacher from NY soaking in the last week and a half of summer break! Here I am at the @BenFolds show in Queens!
A2 remember the making. I am working in my Art Journal right along side all my kids. My former students told me I got very dark when I wasn’t making. I want them to see my mistakes and that it won’t kill me, frustrating but I keep making #K12ArtChat
A3: taking a step back to reflect and then to boost my confidence with a plan to improve. Then I put my big girl pants on to conquer the world one step at a time. #k12ArtChat
A3: When I feel knocked down or life really deals me a hard hand, I try to practice gratitude as much as needed. TRY is the key word - I am imperfect at it and learning each day. #K12ArtChat
A4- Linseed Oil always has that effect on me to transport my mind to places that have great personal meaning for me, whether it’s art related or not #K12ArtChat
#k12artchat A4a Hm.. that’s a hard one. Pass!
Kidding.
Be in the moment (authentically) wherever you are. I’ve learned over six decades that nothing matters like being yourself. Comport yourself appropriately and stuff will work out nicely.
A4: wow! What a question! I for sure striggle to have equal patients at home & tend to be much more understanding & patient towards my students. This is an area I’ve been working on this year - staying present & less@focused on the to-do’s #k12ArtChat
A4 a quiet drive home, and plan for the evening help me focus on family when I get home. Getting to school early to be organized so I can jet out the door at the end of the day to make the most of my evening with the family #K12ArtChat
A4: Especially, when I taught at the same elementary as my kids went to! it made me more stressed (No down time from kids to be ready to enjoy them) Now at Middle, my son says, he enjoys how much more stuff I can get done after school. (even with sisters there) #K12ArtChat
A3 about 2 Year’s ago I left teaching to be at home, I was defeated. Many problems in life. I had reached that end point. I had a former student first year in college reach out to me for help with a problem. Realized I did make connections #K12ArtChat
A2 Making #art (in any form) is the best healthy way of coping with & digesting the noise & #stress the world brings- I teach it & love it! #K12ArtChat
A5 the cold air. Fall/Winter air seems to bring me right back to the present. It is a smell of energy & new beginnings. When stressed, taking deep belly breaths & filling my lungs can really help reduce my anxiety & help me focus on the moment. #K12artchat
A3 #K12ArtChat I think 2016-2017 was that year for me. It was a perfect storm of suck. I don't know that I have any good advice. I made some huge changes in my life that paid off, for the most part. It was scary, but also empowering.
A4: i have gained more patience in both worlds after becoming a mom. Being spontaneous seems to be my husband’s job when he forgets to tell me things. #k12ArtChat
#k12artchat A5a The smell of an approaching squall on the ocean.. or in Texas snaps me back. In the photo Mrs and me are west of Abilene, TX on our way home from a workshop in Dallas. I just had to get the shot in the moments before rain began to fall. I paused to smell the scent
A3 The more you put yourself out there the more you will feel defeat (as well as success) I find the best way of dealing w/ failure is making it a learning experience & keeping your motivation on your goals (lose the battle but win the war) Also pizza, that helps too! #K12ArtChat
A4 #k12artchat -- I am really struggling to find more time for my own artmaking. I am moving into a bigger home that has a nice space that I'm excited to claim for my studio area.
A4 I really identified with this ? I definitely struggle with feeling that I give most of myself at work, hard to find time for myself much less my awesome hubs, planning #datenight helps! #K12artchat
Q6 seeing should not be a passive act. We must be active in our looking. Noticing the shadows dancing on the floor, the smile on a child’s face, the crayons that spilled on the floor. Notice w/wonder & curiosity the small moments. #k12ArtChat
A6 I watched a student today get lost in creativity. Truly in the Flow state (Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi). I watched as he carefully created from his minds eye. There is nothing greater than watching a child create understanding about the world around them. #k12ArtChat
A5: Coffee. Always coffee. All the coffee. It reminds me of waking up at my moms house and hearing the coffee pot brewing, traveling to Brazil and all the awesome coffee shops my husband and I have had the chance to visit in various places. #K12ArtChat
#k12artchat A5 The smell of eucalyptus helps me focus. Not the chemical eucalyptus smell in a lot of scented products, but the real deal. There are a lot of eucalyptus trees in my school neighborhood, so sometimes I nab a leaf on the way to school and just keep it at my desk.

A5 printing ink. Intaglio black oil base. Alcohol rags. UNT print lab at 05:00, no one but the cleaning crew around me as I inked up plates. One of the happiest times in my life. #K12ArtChat
A5- My Art 3 students & I have been working with clay, pretty Solid, for 3 weeks now! Tomorrow, we’ll try to focus on incorporating the Opposite of Sight, Blindness, & using Touch to drive our learning #K12ArtChat by ‘blindfolding those on the wheel. I’ll post a video tomorrow!
A6 #k12artchat Today I noticed that a student had left me a tiny note on my whiteboard. I could have missed it in the chaos of my scribbles today, but it truly made my day. This is the 3rd one this year!
A6, a 1st grade student and I sat in the floor and discussed the cracking pattern in the art room floor. It was a joy to sit and talk, build relationships, and stare at line patterns on the floor! And that kiddo knows the types and qualities of line #K12ArtChat
A7 I will focus on seeing tomorrow. What does creativity look like in the moment. I will look for smiles, wonder, curiosity, joy. The things that aren’t measured/assessed/quantified... but the essential things that form the foundation for learning. #K12artchat
Wasn’t today but, this week, sitting and waiting for dinner at a restaurant. Realizing the cool shadow from the sunset. #K12ArtChat using the @1SecondEveryday app.
A6: Today I saw teachers working to make things happen for the good of our students in simple conversations, encouraging words and high expectations #K12artchat
#k12artchat A7a This morning I learned that many #drone#photographers prefer early morning light or sunset for dramatic lighting shots.. Saturday I’m practicing #DronePhotography hours earlier than usual to see what I can see.
A6: sense of sight, picking up on subtle clues to help me understand my Ss a little better. understand where they are coming from if they are off #K12ArtChat
A7: Hearing... as I engage students with our “fine art Friday” work, I want to build relationships through restorative practices. To know them, you have to hear them first ❤️🎨 #K12ArtChat
A4 I’m an empty nester, and I find home relaxing. My husband is understanding of a hard day and just loves on me. Again prayer is a biggie in our home - I’m married to a minister. #k12artchat
#k12artchat A7 -- I will focus on listening. I am very visual-oriented and tend to tune out noise when there are many noises at once. But that causes me to miss some great things kids say. I need to work on listening more, even when it's chaotic.
Hearing - as we wrap up the new first week of the school year I want to focus on asking intentional questions and hearing the stories of my students. #k12artchat
I ask Ss to look, think, & talk about the work of contemporary artists before they create. Exploring & critiquing art not only provides Ss with creative inspiration but it also gives them the opportunity to develop their critical thinking skills. #K12artchat#SlowK12ArtChat
Try some Art Dice, have them work in groups, to use all of the items from the dice in their drawing. Or try out some 30 circles. see where their ideas go. #K12ArtChat
