#TeacherFriends Q1: What does Social Studies look like in your room? How has it changed over the years? How do you give focus to Social Studies with competing priorities?
  • ExploringFirst May 1 @ 9:06 PM EDT
My EOY strategies include review games covering content from the entire year and book clubs to differentiate meeting student interests in reading. #teacherfriends
  • dot2teach May 1 @ 9:06 PM EDT
Anyone going to ISTE this year? #teacherfriends
  • mrstabb1 May 1 @ 9:07 PM EDT
A1: Social studies was nonexistent in my room two years ago! Except for holidays, of course. Now it dominates our day! We study geography, econ, history, sociology, and civics. We tie it in as much as possible with core subjects. #teacherfriends
  • kindergatorss May 1 @ 9:07 PM EDT
Ss in my room is very hands on! I incorporate Ss throughout my whole day! I do not believe in only teaching social studies for 40 minutes a day! That doesn’t give it the justice I think deserves! I incorporate it throughout my schedule and day! #teacherfriends
  • 99Wyo May 1 @ 9:07 PM EDT
A1: We currently use Studies weekly for our social studies but we are looking into an actual program next year. #teacherfriends
  • mcarlson110 May 1 @ 9:07 PM EDT
#teacherfriends We do 30 minutes a day but we switch units with science. So we do 1 unit of science and then 1 unit of social studies
  • FirstAtBat May 1 @ 9:07 PM EDT
    hey there!!! #teacherfriends reunion!
  • kindergatorss May 1 @ 9:08 PM EDT
    Love this quote #teacherfriends
  • SDartmann7 May 1 @ 9:08 PM EDT
A1: We use Pearson in Kindergarten. So much is already included in "Let's Find Out" or reading or religion time. I switchit with Science - usually 3x/week. #TeacherFriends
  • dot2teach May 1 @ 9:08 PM EDT
A1 I integrate SS with my ELA. This has made it so much easier to hit the skills. #teacherfriends
  • FirstAtBat May 1 @ 9:08 PM EDT
A1: It is sad what has happened to SS instruction. Try to fit it into reading content, add virtual trips, Mystery Skypes. #teacherfriends
  • dot2teach May 1 @ 9:09 PM EDT
A1 My goal this summer is to create more integrated units. We are wrapping up the American Revolution and the kids have really enjoyed it. #teacherfriends
  • CeciliaPortugal May 1 @ 9:09 PM EDT
#teacherfriends Hey there Cecilia from Cali. K-1 combo teacher sorry I'm late.
  • KweezleQueen May 1 @ 9:09 PM EDT
#TeacherFriends We can always count on our Cindy to find incredible and inspiring quotes. Thanks friend in-real-life.
  • 99Wyo May 1 @ 9:09 PM EDT
That's what we are looking to go with next year. #teacherfriends
    In reply to @SDartmann7
  • LWMrsParker May 1 @ 9:09 PM EDT
This year, I've tried to be more purposeful about representation with my Ss. When we did biographies, I purposely purchased picture books that featured people who might not always make the mainstream textbooks. #teacherfriends
  • mcarlson110 May 1 @ 9:09 PM EDT
Reading and writing and math are the priorities for us - content is a side note. #teacherfriends
  • FirstAtBat May 1 @ 9:09 PM EDT
We moved from SS Weekly...and I miss it, A LOT. #teacherfriends
    • 99Wyo May 1 @ 9:07 PM EDT
A1: We currently use Studies weekly for our social studies but we are looking into an actual program next year. #teacherfriends

I love the online component with SS Weekly. #teacherfriends

  • CeciliaPortugal May 1 @ 9:10 PM EDT
#teacherfriends Our social studies is integrated in our ELA and then we add fun activities to it.
  • mcarlson110 May 1 @ 9:11 PM EDT
we use Scholastic News as well as having a textbook #teacherfriends
  • LWMrsParker May 1 @ 9:11 PM EDT
My class fell in love with this freebie from you. They asked me to play music from the time period. They took ownership in creating this display. This is all student made. #teacherfriends
    In reply to @mrstabb1
  • knelsonedu May 1 @ 9:11 PM EDT
#teacherfriends Social Studies is embedded into our Reading. We use trade books, leveled readers, Scholastic news to teach Social Studies curriculum.
  • ExploringFirst May 1 @ 9:11 PM EDT
A1: We use Pearson to teach social studies. I incorporate state standards within each IB unit with our inquiry notebook activities exploring civics, geology, etc. #teacherfriends
  • teresa6882 May 1 @ 9:11 PM EDT
We don’t have a program for social studies but we did have our school wide fair last week. They completed research journals, wrote a piece about what America means to them, and have watched the Decorah eagle nest. #teacherfriends
  • dot2teach May 1 @ 9:12 PM EDT
We have nothing for SS. We create our own units. Thank goodness for @Pinterest and @TpTdotcom #teacherfriends
  • ExploringFirst May 1 @ 9:12 PM EDT
I’m hoping to embed social studies better in reading next year. #teacherfriends
  • LWMrsParker May 1 @ 9:13 PM EDT
We used @StoryboardThat to create a graphic comic about people we researched. This is a sample of one my student created. #teacherfriends
  • FirstAtBat May 1 @ 9:13 PM EDT
    I know @mcarlson110 says she has 30 minutes a day...how about others? #teacherfriends
  • LWMrsParker May 1 @ 9:14 PM EDT
I can't wait to figure out how to integrate your social studies units into my TK class next year. Hope to meet you this summer at Get Your Teach On. #teacherfriends

A1: #teacherfriends I have changed my thought re: embedding reading skills w/social studies. A great part of that comes from this:
  • KweezleQueen May 1 @ 9:16 PM EDT
#TeacherFriends Q2: How comfortable do you feel teaching about culture? How do you stretch your comfort zone, when it comes to teaching about culture? How do you/can you involve others in the teaching of culture?
  • mrstabb1 May 1 @ 9:17 PM EDT
A2: We study cultures by using the culture months that are already in place. We learn about how/when they came to the US and how they were treated when they got here. Then, we celebrate notable people that descend from that culture. #teacherfriends
  • kindergatorss May 1 @ 9:17 PM EDT
#teacherfriends q2: I am pretty comfortable about teaching cultures but like with everything else there is always room for improvement and change! I hope to find more materials and meet more people to teach cultures more effectively!
  • 99Wyo May 1 @ 9:17 PM EDT
A2:I feel like that is the one area we are missing with SS Weekly, this is where we are looking to fill the gap. #teacherfriends
  • FirstAtBat May 1 @ 9:17 PM EDT
A2: I love learning and teaching about culture. One of my favorite things reasons for global collaboration. #teacherfriends
  • kindergatorss May 1 @ 9:18 PM EDT
#teacherfriends just a quote to remind us how important it is to step out ignorant our comfort zone!
  • LWMrsParker May 1 @ 9:18 PM EDT
I'm curious as to what caused you to make this shift? I'd love to do more learning this summer to develop in this area as well. #teacherfriends
    In reply to @mrstabb1
  • SDartmann7 May 1 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A2: Our 5th grade T let her Ss pick someone to research - made it a "living wax museum" - my Ks loved learning through that! #TeacherFriends
  • ExploringFirst May 1 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A2: I’m comfortable with teaching culture. One of my favorite IB units has students express themselves and we get to explore culture and traditions. #teacherfriends
  • kindergatorss May 1 @ 9:19 PM EDT
    #teacherfriends I love this quote
  • mrstabb1 May 1 @ 9:19 PM EDT
ugh, I'm so bad at twitter! I posted an image with a quote that i'd read about how when we try to use social studies as a vehicle for reading goals, we won't meet the civic missions that we need. #teacherfriends
    In reply to @LWMrsParker
  • dot2teach May 1 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A2: Culture and respect go hand in hand when teaching. I have open dialogue in my room so students feel safe asking questions about things they might not understand or agree with. #teacherfriends
  • CeciliaPortugal May 1 @ 9:19 PM EDT
#teacherfriends A2 I feel fairly comfortable teaching about culture. My mom was an immigrant. I try to research carefully before I teach and reach out to members of that culture if I can. I have found we have much more in common than many people believe.
  • ExploringFirst May 1 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A2: I could improve this but teaching culture all year within other units and using individuals to explore cultures. #teacherfriends
  • fuzzlady77 May 1 @ 9:20 PM EDT
#teacherfriends I’m away my Plants & Ponds pack!! Enter here: https://t.co/BcbO7WYjOr
  • kindergatorss May 1 @ 9:20 PM EDT
#teacherfriends another culture quote that I truly believe we all should remember!!
  • FirstAtBat May 1 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A2: Literature is also a great place to bring in culture, deep discussions and exposure. #teacherfriends
  • KweezleQueen May 1 @ 9:20 PM EDT
You're doing a great job. I was able to see the graphic, only after I 'clicked' on it. For some reason it was being filtered. #TeacherFriends are applauding your learning with us tonight!
  • drmcgaughy May 1 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A2: Coming from a multicultural background, I feel fairly comfortable talking about other cultures. I love learning about different countries, languages, dress, customs, etc. #teacherfriends
  • LWMrsParker May 1 @ 9:20 PM EDT
I think if we did a better job teaching culture we'd have more acceptance and understanding. I find that only few groups our represented; sadly, over and over again. Ss need to know more about lots of diff people. I need to get better at this, too. #teacherfriends
  • kindergatorss May 1 @ 9:21 PM EDT
    #teacherfriends one last culture quote
  • ktravers83 May 1 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A2: I think I felt pretty comfortable teaching culture to my Ss but I think I’ve changed how I address it. Making sure my facts are right so I can help them is so important and by this I mean “was I taught the correct info myself?” #teacherfriends
  • SDartmann7 May 1 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A2: I try to make it integrated and something my Ks can really understand. They love a "Christmas Around The World" unit to explore cultures and learn about others. #TeacherFriends
  • KweezleQueen May 1 @ 9:21 PM EDT
#TeacherFriends Here is the image of the quote that LaNesha tweeted earlier. Let's see if it is visible this time around.
  • 99Wyo May 1 @ 9:22 PM EDT
The 7th grade kids just got done with a wax and tomorrow night the 6th graders have their Country night tomorrow. #teacherfriends
  • FirstAtBat May 1 @ 9:22 PM EDT
I agree, find it VERY important to be accurate. #teacherfriends

#TeacherFriends Here is the image of the quote that LaNesha tweeted earlier. Let's see if it is visible this time around.
  • FirstAtBat May 1 @ 9:24 PM EDT
This is exactly what I don't like about our new SS curriculum...it is a reading curriculum. #teacherfriends
    • KweezleQueen May 1 @ 9:21 PM EDT
#TeacherFriends Here is the image of the quote that LaNesha tweeted earlier. Let's see if it is visible this time around.
  • mrstabb1 May 1 @ 9:25 PM EDT
exactly. this quote changed everything for me! #teacherfriends
    In reply to @SDartmann7
  • KweezleQueen May 1 @ 9:26 PM EDT
#TeacherFriends Q3: How can we tie global themes to things that we already teach? What are some examples where you have crossed curriculum to strengthen your Social Studies goals?
  • LWMrsParker May 1 @ 9:26 PM EDT
It's the same for science. We can read all about science but if we never experiment or have some hands on scientific learning, did we learn science or read about it? #teacherfriends
    In reply to @SDartmann7
  • KweezleQueen May 1 @ 9:26 PM EDT
What she just said. #TeacherFriends Never has there been a more critical time in history to open the conversation and understanding of our wider world, through the diversity of our people and 'connectedness.'
  • dot2teach May 1 @ 9:26 PM EDT
BUT by integrating with reading my kids are immersed in the topic instead of for 30 minutes every other day. I think some people may think it is given "just reading" attention when it is not. #teacherfriends
  • mrstabb1 May 1 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A3: Always looking for science ties in culture. Hidden Figures study led to a rocket STEM chall. and math counting chall. We will learn abt. Waturu Misaka -1st non-white NBA player. We will study parabolic arcs in Bball catapult challenge! #teacherfriends
  • kindergatorss May 1 @ 9:28 PM EDT
#teacherfriends in our Ss expectations we are to teach maps and globes focusing on continents and bodies of water so I focus on nonfiction texts during ela to highlight and reinforce these skills
  • mrstabb1 May 1 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A3: Example- studying Alfred Nobel because our Ss are supposed to be so impressed when someone wins it...but who was he? Led to a convo about the importance of awards and viola...a stem project. #teacherfriends
  • TeacherPants_01 May 1 @ 9:28 PM EDT
    #TeacherFriends in #Nashville
  • maggieskinder May 1 @ 9:28 PM EDT
#TeacherFriends A3: Any time we can use our own seasonal experiences to compare with other cultures, it's a win! How do others get ready for winter? Spring? Summer? Fall?

    • LWMrsParker May 1 @ 9:26 PM EDT

As we are studying ecosystems, Learning about the human impact as animals become at risk or endangered. When I told my students how people hunt lions just for the game of it, my Ss were in shock. One commented, "they have nothing better to do." Connections made. #teacherfriends
  • ExploringFirst May 1 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A3: Holidays are a great way to provide global thinking. Also special months such as black history month, women’s history month, etc. #teacherfriends
  • LWMrsParker May 1 @ 9:31 PM EDT
YES! We need more do and apply rather than sit and get. #teacherfriends
    In reply to @KweezleQueen
  • FirstAtBat May 1 @ 9:31 PM EDT
One of the greatest things we did this year was a global project where we created our community with "gingerbread" and then connected on @SkypeClassroom with a class in Belarus. Great SS lesson there! #teacherfriends
  • dot2teach May 1 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A3 We read A Long Walk to Water this year. My kids were shocked and saddened by what they learned. They asked to research more about Africa and organizations raising money to drill wells. #teacherfriends
  • ktravers83 May 1 @ 9:32 PM EDT
A3: My district has changed our values to include relationship and academic goals. Student stories are a huge part of it. Social Studies allows the stories to begin new conversations. #teacherfriends
  • LWMrsParker May 1 @ 9:32 PM EDT
I'm planning to use Storyworks and connect it to Flint, Michigan. #teacherfriends

  • ktravers83 May 1 @ 9:36 PM EDT
A3: Mexico was a country we discussed during a celebrations unit. I plan on revisiting the info learned to add more with Cinco de mayo on Friday. I am going to teach a traditional dance but then have Ss create a dance to reflect themselves. #teacherfriends
  • ExploringFirst May 1 @ 9:36 PM EDT
Has anyone done a service based learning project related to a social studies issue? I’d love to create one for next year to deepen the impact they have to help change or inspire others/things. #teacherfriends
  • KweezleQueen May 1 @ 9:36 PM EDT
Tell us more! This change sounds so critically needed. How can we start a movement? Where did it begin in your district? #TeacherFriends are all ears!
    • ktravers83 May 1 @ 9:32 PM EDT
A3: My district has changed our values to include relationship and academic goals. Student stories are a huge part of it. Social Studies allows the stories to begin new conversations. #teacherfriends
  • mrstabb1 May 1 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A4: Challenges for for culture include having a deep understanding that there is no single voice for an entire culture. There are no absolutes. Never tell your students "ALL" black people do this or "ALL" Hispanic people do that. #teacherfriends
  • LWMrsParker May 1 @ 9:37 PM EDT
Storyworks from Scholastic has an article about how ppl in Flint still do not have clean, usable water. I want my Ss to know that these are just not third world problems. We have it here. #teacherfriends
    In reply to @mrstabb1, @dot2teach
  • ExploringFirst May 1 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A4: A challenge I had when I first started teaching was making sure to teach all cultures represented in my classroom. Not just main individuals or ideas. I wasn’t as inclusive my first year as I am now. I am more intentional. #teacherfriends
  • mrstabb1 May 1 @ 9:38 PM EDT
A4: Making sure that expose our Ss to DIVERSE people that have done incredible things. Why can't students picture Dr. Patricia Bath when they think of a scientist? Why shouldn't they picture @NotahBegay3 when they picture race car drivers? #teacherfriends
  • mrstabb1 May 1 @ 9:38 PM EDT
We partnered up with a school that has a high Burmese refugee population where no one speaks their language. My students used their writing workshop time to create books to help those students learn English words. #teacherfriends

#teacherfriends my schedule is a problem! It make sure Tim challenging to teach Ss because we only teach it every 5 days for 1 and a half hours
  • dot2teach May 1 @ 9:38 PM EDT
A4 My main challenge is resources. But the flip side of that is I can create the units and have creative freedom. #teacherfriends

Our littles read Water Princess and Skyped with @RHreljac and the impact was HUGE. #teacherfriends
        • dot2teach May 1 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A3 We read A Long Walk to Water this year. My kids were shocked and saddened by what they learned. They asked to research more about Africa and organizations raising money to drill wells. #teacherfriends

A: Up until lately, it's been knowing what to teach for SS in Kindergarten. #teacherfriends
  • maggieskinder May 1 @ 9:39 PM EDT
#TeacherFriends A4:In k, it is not a stretch to integrate social studies themes with reading or math. It is more relatable in many respects As we read, we learn about authors' backgrounds. For instance: Jan Brett's interest in old world stories.
  • LWMrsParker May 1 @ 9:39 PM EDT
Yes! I had a great conversation w/2 Ss about how they preferred to be acknowledge; black or African American. As others listened, they chimed in about how they identify themselves. This would not have happened unless we talk and listen. #teacherfriends

#teacherfriends to overcome this challenge I incorporate Ss throughout the day whenever possible
  • KweezleQueen May 1 @ 9:41 PM EDT
#TeacherFriends Sensitivity is always so critical. I know how 'well meaning' (over-simplified) projects have been perceived as demeaning by the very culture intended to be honored. *feather headbands at Thanksgiving in Kindergarten as an example
  • mrstabb1 May 1 @ 9:42 PM EDT
YES. The Cinco de Mayo crafts and such, too. #teacherfriends

I think one challenge is having diverse materials that represent multiple viewpoints. To resolve this, I love using picture books. #teacherfriends

  • ktravers83 May 1 @ 9:43 PM EDT
A4: A challenge when I started was to decide if it my place to teach certain concepts. Now I want to plant the seeds for my Ss so they are exposed to as much accurate knowledge as possible. Teaming up with a friend was key because we both have different stories. #teacherfriends
  • mrstabb1 May 1 @ 9:44 PM EDT
Yes. and photographs. We show photographs and pose questions to get at multiple perspectives. #teacherfriends

#TeacherFriends A4: It should be a priority to collect picture books and resources that feature girls and boys in non traditional settings. Not so long ago, this was not available to us. Multiple viewpoints.
