#TeacherFriends INTROS! Where are you? What's your edu-role? New to Twitter? Need Twitter support? Name one strategy you have to finish the year strong?
WELCOME!
Hi! LaNesha tweeting from INDY. Teaching K and trying to make Social Studies Important again! EOY strategy? I finish the year by letting my students create games, peer tutor, and create learning songs! #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends WELCOME! We are moving forward with a 'scaled back' once-a-month chat on the first Tuesday of the month.
We will continue with the same supportive, encouraging tone we've had for nearly four years now.
WELCOME!
I’m considering moving to Australia after I found my classroom flooded this morning. Hoping my #teacherfriends will be my rays of sunshine on this Tuesday evening.
Hello! 4th grade teacher from Missouri. I keep consistant with my routines and expectations these last few weeks. I have missed you all! #teacherfriends
Master's classes complete - graduate on Saturday from @PeruState so I'm back with my #Teacherfriends - even though you've never been far from my thoughts!! Shelley, K T in Nebraska - where our biggest news tonight is tornado warnings!
#TeacherFriends I'm back in Florida for another 10 days. I'm a music-lady, author/illustrator, conference presenter.
I have school visits in four different states planned as we travel north at the end of the month!
So happy to join tonight's chat. I'm currently teaching 5th but will return to the younger kids next year as a TK teacher; CA's version of pre-k. #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends Here's a little glimpse from my Author School Visit in CO at the end of April.
Every child in PreSchool received a copy of my picture book, "Tall Giraffe" !!!!
#TeacherFriends Here is the outline for our chat tonight 5/1 with LaNesha @mrstabb1 on the topic,
"What happened to Social Studies?"
Having the questions ahead of time is to help facilitate your participation. Jump right in!
#TeacherFriends This song of mine is used in lots of End-of-Year festivities. Win your own digital download tonight!

#TeacherFriends Q1: What does Social Studies look like in your room? How has it changed over the years? How do you give focus to Social Studies with competing priorities?
My EOY strategies include review games covering content from the entire year and book clubs to differentiate meeting student interests in reading. #teacherfriends
A1: Social studies was nonexistent in my room two years ago! Except for holidays, of course. Now it dominates our day! We study geography, econ, history, sociology, and civics. We tie it in as much as possible with core subjects. #teacherfriends
Ss in my room is very hands on! I incorporate Ss throughout my whole day! I do not believe in only teaching social studies for 40 minutes a day! That doesn’t give it the justice I think deserves! I incorporate it throughout my schedule and day! #teacherfriends
A1: We use Pearson in Kindergarten. So much is already included in "Let's Find Out" or reading or religion time. I switchit with Science - usually 3x/week. #TeacherFriends
A1 My goal this summer is to create more integrated units. We are wrapping up the American Revolution and the kids have really enjoyed it. #teacherfriends
This year, I've tried to be more purposeful about representation with my Ss. When we did biographies, I purposely purchased picture books that featured people who might not always make the mainstream textbooks. #teacherfriends
My class fell in love with this freebie from you. They asked me to play music from the time period. They took ownership in creating this display. This is all student made. #teacherfriends
A1: We use Pearson to teach social studies. I incorporate state standards within each IB unit with our inquiry notebook activities exploring civics, geology, etc. #teacherfriends
We don’t have a program for social studies but we did have our school wide fair last week. They completed research journals, wrote a piece about what America means to them, and have watched the Decorah eagle nest. #teacherfriends
I can't wait to figure out how to integrate your social studies units into my TK class next year. Hope to meet you this summer at Get Your Teach On. #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends Q2: How comfortable do you feel teaching about culture? How do you stretch your comfort zone, when it comes to teaching about culture? How do you/can you involve others in the teaching of culture?
A2: We study cultures by using the culture months that are already in place. We learn about how/when they came to the US and how they were treated when they got here. Then, we celebrate notable people that descend from that culture. #teacherfriends
#teacherfriends q2: I am pretty comfortable about teaching cultures but like with everything else there is always room for improvement and change! I hope to find more materials and meet more people to teach cultures more effectively!
A2: I’m comfortable with teaching culture. One of my favorite IB units has students express themselves and we get to explore culture and traditions. #teacherfriends
ugh, I'm so bad at twitter! I posted an image with a quote that i'd read about how when we try to use social studies as a vehicle for reading goals, we won't meet the civic missions that we need. #teacherfriends
A2: Culture and respect go hand in hand when teaching. I have open dialogue in my room so students feel safe asking questions about things they might not understand or agree with. #teacherfriends
#teacherfriends A2 I feel fairly comfortable teaching about culture. My mom was an immigrant. I try to research carefully before I teach and reach out to members of that culture if I can. I have found we have much more in common than many people believe.
You're doing a great job. I was able to see the graphic, only after I 'clicked' on it. For some reason it was being filtered.
#TeacherFriends are applauding your learning with us tonight!
ugh, I'm so bad at twitter! I posted an image with a quote that i'd read about how when we try to use social studies as a vehicle for reading goals, we won't meet the civic missions that we need. #teacherfriends
A2: Coming from a multicultural background, I feel fairly comfortable talking about other cultures. I love learning about different countries, languages, dress, customs, etc. #teacherfriends
I think if we did a better job teaching culture we'd have more acceptance and understanding. I find that only few groups our represented; sadly, over and over again. Ss need to know more about lots of diff people. I need to get better at this, too. #teacherfriends
A2: I think I felt pretty comfortable teaching culture to my Ss but I think I’ve changed how I address it. Making sure my facts are right so I can help them is so important and by this I mean “was I taught the correct info myself?” #teacherfriends
A2: I try to make it integrated and something my Ks can really understand. They love a "Christmas Around The World" unit to explore cultures and learn about others. #TeacherFriends
A2: I think I felt pretty comfortable teaching culture to my Ss but I think I’ve changed how I address it. Making sure my facts are right so I can help them is so important and by this I mean “was I taught the correct info myself?” #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends Q3: How can we tie global themes to things that we already teach? What are some examples where you have crossed curriculum to strengthen your Social Studies goals?
It's the same for science. We can read all about science but if we never experiment or have some hands on scientific learning, did we learn science or read about it? #teacherfriends
What she just said. #TeacherFriends
Never has there been a more critical time in history to open the conversation and understanding of our wider world, through the diversity of our people and 'connectedness.'
I think if we did a better job teaching culture we'd have more acceptance and understanding. I find that only few groups our represented; sadly, over and over again. Ss need to know more about lots of diff people. I need to get better at this, too. #teacherfriends
BUT by integrating with reading my kids are immersed in the topic instead of for 30 minutes every other day. I think some people may think it is given "just reading" attention when it is not. #teacherfriends
A3: Always looking for science ties in culture. Hidden Figures study led to a rocket STEM chall. and math counting chall. We will learn abt. Waturu Misaka -1st non-white NBA player. We will study parabolic arcs in Bball catapult challenge! #teacherfriends
#teacherfriends in our Ss expectations we are to teach maps and globes focusing on continents and bodies of water so I focus on nonfiction texts during ela to highlight and reinforce these skills
A3: Example- studying Alfred Nobel because our Ss are supposed to be so impressed when someone wins it...but who was he? Led to a convo about the importance of awards and viola...a stem project. #teacherfriends
It’s officially #ShowYourLove for Teachers Month! The goal is to get the whole city involved in thanking Nashville’s amazing teachers. Go to https://t.co/eEBFu4csU1 to find out how you can join in!
#TeacherFriends A3: Any time we can use our own seasonal experiences to compare with other cultures, it's a win! How do others get ready for winter? Spring? Summer? Fall?
It's the same for science. We can read all about science but if we never experiment or have some hands on scientific learning, did we learn science or read about it? #teacherfriends
As we are studying ecosystems, Learning about the human impact as animals become at risk or endangered. When I told my students how people hunt lions just for the game of it, my Ss were in shock. One commented, "they have nothing better to do." Connections made. #teacherfriends
One of the greatest things we did this year was a global project where we created our community with "gingerbread" and then connected on @SkypeClassroom with a class in Belarus. Great SS lesson there! #teacherfriends
A3 We read A Long Walk to Water this year. My kids were shocked and saddened by what they learned. They asked to research more about Africa and organizations raising money to drill wells. #teacherfriends
A3: My district has changed our values to include relationship and academic goals. Student stories are a huge part of it. Social Studies allows the stories to begin new conversations. #teacherfriends

Technology has opened the window to the world. Literally. #TeacherFriends We're a click away from actual conversations with the other side of the world!

A3: Mexico was a country we discussed during a celebrations unit. I plan on revisiting the info learned to add more with Cinco de mayo on Friday. I am going to teach a traditional dance but then have Ss create a dance to reflect themselves. #teacherfriends
Has anyone done a service based learning project related to a social studies issue? I’d love to create one for next year to deepen the impact they have to help change or inspire others/things. #teacherfriends
A3: My district has changed our values to include relationship and academic goals. Student stories are a huge part of it. Social Studies allows the stories to begin new conversations. #teacherfriends
A4: Challenges for for culture include having a deep understanding that there is no single voice for an entire culture. There are no absolutes. Never tell your students "ALL" black people do this or "ALL" Hispanic people do that. #teacherfriends
Storyworks from Scholastic has an article about how ppl in Flint still do not have clean, usable water. I want my Ss to know that these are just not third world problems. We have it here. #teacherfriends
A4: A challenge I had when I first started teaching was making sure to teach all cultures represented in my classroom. Not just main individuals or ideas. I wasn’t as inclusive my first year as I am now. I am more intentional. #teacherfriends
A4: Making sure that expose our Ss to DIVERSE people that have done incredible things. Why can't students picture Dr. Patricia Bath when they think of a scientist? Why shouldn't they picture @NotahBegay3 when they picture race car drivers? #teacherfriends
We partnered up with a school that has a high Burmese refugee population where no one speaks their language. My students used their writing workshop time to create books to help those students learn English words. #teacherfriends
A3 We read A Long Walk to Water this year. My kids were shocked and saddened by what they learned. They asked to research more about Africa and organizations raising money to drill wells. #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends A4:In k, it is not a stretch to integrate social studies themes with reading or math. It is more relatable in many respects As we read, we learn about authors' backgrounds. For instance: Jan Brett's interest in old world stories.
Yes! I had a great conversation w/2 Ss about how they preferred to be acknowledge; black or African American. As others listened, they chimed in about how they identify themselves. This would not have happened unless we talk and listen. #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends Sensitivity is always so critical. I know how 'well meaning' (over-simplified) projects have been perceived as demeaning by the very culture intended to be honored.
*feather headbands at Thanksgiving in Kindergarten as an example
A4: Challenges for for culture include having a deep understanding that there is no single voice for an entire culture. There are no absolutes. Never tell your students "ALL" black people do this or "ALL" Hispanic people do that. #teacherfriends
A4: A challenge when I started was to decide if it my place to teach certain concepts. Now I want to plant the seeds for my Ss so they are exposed to as much accurate knowledge as possible. Teaming up with a friend was key because we both have different stories. #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends Q5: What are some of your favorite resources for teaching Social Studies? Please share links, apps, blog articles that inspire and/or any photos you have that are worth a thousand words.
My Social Studies pages https://t.co/QDDpr71bjz My students over the years I taught wrote their own American Revolution book, produced their own news show, created their own historical dig and scavenger hunt, had a Model Congress... #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends A4: It should be a priority to collect picture books and resources that feature girls and boys in non traditional settings. Not so long ago, this was not available to us. Multiple viewpoints.
I love finding nonfiction texts to use throughout my day! These texts relate to our Ss standards which really need to be more rigorous and meaningful #teacherfriends
