-
Jessie Erickson - multi-tasking and glad to be here.
-
love Holland. Beautiful language and country. Have you been there?
-
My first year teaching, I had a student who only spoke Spanish. I did my best to fake my way through it!
-
A1: Travel to Japan, Portugal, Spain caused some lang issues. Tried to learn key phrases and understand manners.
-
-
Yes, several times. The language barrier is difficult, but many speak some English. Helps me sympathize for my ELL students.
-
-
It helps if you have experienced what they go through daily.
-
-
A1: I spent time abroad learning German. I had to tell myself you won't be able to understand everything.
-
-
5th. I had two years of Spanish in high school, but it didn't really help! :)
-
-
My name is Matt. Running late to . Teach 5th grade in AL. Graduated w/my Masters in ESL in December & super proud!
-
A2: I think technology can be crucial here to provide access to anything.
-
As a math teacher I use what I can find, writing out problems, and any props to show the math and break it down.
-
A2: IWB flipcharts, visuals on the board, images and graphics uploaded to Google classroom, anchor charts, easel, etc.
-
A1: Trying to communicate with ELL parents who don't speak English. Find common words, use visuals.
-
What are IWB flip charts?
-
The challenge is to go at the right pace for the ELL student and the others in the room. Tough to know.
-
A2: Find digital media to enhance lessons. YouTube. Google image search.
-
What type of math are you currently doing in you class?
-
-
Promethean, interactive white board flipchats - like power points, but interactive.
-
Equivalent Fractions with third graders and subtraction with regrouping with second. Seems like ELL students knew place value.
-
A2 Lots of illustrations and diagrams, especially with math and science.
-
Have you ever had students act out the math physically with embedded language?
-
-
Actually, yeah. Lots of physical modeling, too.
-
Awesome! Bet the Ss love it.
-
-
A3: I like to do a concept development with change. I let them draw or write what changes.
-
A3: I have only one ESL student - I find that it is easiest to provide peer support to this student. "Kid speak" works well.
-
Yes, and it was difficult and frustrating as a child not to understand others.
-
Never underestimate the power of social interaction! Provide classroom environment that gives lots of opps for this.
-
A3: Try to incorporate Ss cultural backgrounds as much as possible to help them relate to concepts.
-
Yes personal experiences are powerful. Talk about China and government today compared to the U.S.
-
Ss light up when you say or do something they recognize from their home country.
-
Simple phrases like: Hello, Goodbye, please and thank you can make the world of difference!
-
maybe even something from their home culture.
-
-
Yes! I learned my numbers from 1-10 and hello, goodbye, how are you, in Albanian and it really helped me connect!
-
A4: We do a great deal of vocabulary study, linguistic/non-linguistic, voc. games, visual models as much as possible, discussions.
-
I mean vocabulary and structures necessary to communicate.
-
My favorite word in Portugal "obrigado" - brought a smile every time!
-
What kind of games? Have you heard of link up?
-
too many funny German words to choose from.
-
Old fashioned Memory games help make connections introducing a few math symbols or terms.
-
If anyone wants to try link up. will post a goog doc description after the chat. Great activity for student creativity and choice.
-
-
Swat, quiz-quiz trade, match mine, inside-outside circles, Kahoot!, Vocabulary victim, logic line up, agree/disagree
-
A3: Google translate had helped communication both ways. Also, Zach in Joplin, MO joining way late (busy day playing chauffeur)
-
S using google translate. He said it made all the language weird though. Researching virtual reality. https://t.co/TBs38RW7AH
-
