Good point. Number sense encompasses so many factors. Takes understanding of a number to new levels. Sure, you can recognize the icon “5”, but when you can show 5 objects, make connections to having 5 fingers or being 5-years-old, that is the essence of number sense. #ecechat
    In reply to @tinacruickshank

    In reply to @tinacruickshank
  • LauraGarlow Jan 15 @ 9:57 PM EST
A3 my Ss struggle most with place value and not having fluency in basic facts. This shows to me, just how important these foundational skills are! #ecechat
  • jazzmeister2013 Jan 15 @ 9:57 PM EST
Absolutely! When you truly understand the value of a number, and all that entails, you are able to conquer more complex math more easily. #ecechat

RT Q3: What foundational skill do you notice your students struggle with the most? Why do you think that is? #ECEchat
  • StefLRichard Jan 15 @ 9:58 PM EST
    A3: 2 words. Number Sense #ECEchat
  • 2ndGradeMama Jan 15 @ 9:58 PM EST
A2: First graders struggle with Place value. I’ve found that using base ten blocks really helps. +\-10 is also hard and we use a giant 120 board with frames from @LakeshoreLM to model #ECEchat
  • tinacruickshank Jan 15 @ 9:58 PM EST
A3. Number sense. There is so much more than just recognition and memorization of number symbols. They have to manipulate and understand what they do with the number and how it interacts with alll things math #ECEchat
  • HowardKiyuna Jan 15 @ 9:58 PM EST
A2: Dissecting and visually representing place value. Not an ECE skill though. What happens when we move places. So, connecting visceral knowledge with real world understanding. This gap widens with age. We get too smart, heh. #ECEchat
  • jazzmeister2013 Jan 15 @ 9:58 PM EST
Part of the foundational skill building is developing the language of math into the classroom culture. Having Ss think and act like mathematicians. Exposure to more advanced terminology, and building math vocabulary. #ecechat
    In reply to @RSwd53, @tinacruickshank
  • LauraGarlow Jan 15 @ 9:59 PM EST
I think some of it is the names of those numbers! I noticed my Ss last year could do 1-10 and 20+ fine, but always confused how to write the teen numbers and their order. They aren't as helpful names as 21, 22, 23, etc. #ecechat
    In reply to @lindsay8503
  • RSwd53 Jan 15 @ 9:59 PM EST
A3: Identifying and representing with larger numbers. More room for error especially if the student rushes through the process or becomes distracted #ECEchat
  • HowardKiyuna Jan 15 @ 9:59 PM EST

A3: My students are struggling with recognizing the teen numbers. We just began learning #20-30, so they say 25 for 15. 🤦🏼‍♀️ #thestruggleisreal #ecechat
  • StacyBenge Jan 15 @ 10:00 PM EST
A3: When visiting classrooms, I notice children rote counting & recognizing numbers, but lacking true number concepts. Too much time is spent on mundane, memorization activities & not enough hands-on expriences & unstructured time to apply & experiment with knowledge. #ecechat
  • SierraDingesISD Jan 15 @ 10:00 PM EST
A2: Number sense, spatial relationships, 1 to 1 correspondence, and number recognition #ECEChat

  • PrekCummings Jan 15 @ 10:00 PM EST
A3: Every part of the year has its difficulties. Mid-year, I have a lot of students struggling with rote counting through the teens and in March it’ll change to something else. #ECEchat
  • jazzmeister2013 Jan 15 @ 10:01 PM EST
Absolutely! When that accountable math talk becomes prevalent, it leads to game-changing learning and Ss growth. #ecechat
    In reply to @tinacruickshank, @RSwd53

    Q4 Coming up in 1 minute #ECEchat
  • jazzmeister2013 Jan 15 @ 10:02 PM EST
A3- Varies by year, but especially in PK, I find that the first challenge they face is counting to 20 or higher. They often get confused w/ teens. Once they master the teens, they’re able to get patterns and count much further. We spend a lot of time on that concept. #ecechat
  • techwnancy - Moderator Jan 15 @ 10:03 PM EST
Q4: When it comes to student achievement, social-emotional skills like confidence, determination, and self-control can have a big impact. How can teachers build students' confidence in math? #ECEchat
  • SierraDingesISD Jan 15 @ 10:03 PM EST
A3: Place value with larger numbers. I think these numbers/ this concept is new and many are still learning strategies and techniques to help them master it #ECEChat
    In reply to @techwnancy
  • ECEchat - Moderator Jan 15 @ 10:04 PM EST
A4: Make math fun! Play math games, read math books, bring math to life, make it real for them! Help remove the fear children have surrounding math! #ECEchat

  • HowardKiyuna Jan 15 @ 10:06 PM EST
A4: I say create an environment where 'not knowing' is good. Then I can teach you. Show off what you don't know. Then we can learn. There's not way a room of people should be the same at anything, especially processing math. #ECEchat
  • ECEchat - Moderator Jan 15 @ 10:07 PM EST
RT Q4: When it comes to student achievement, non-cognitive skills like confidence, grit and self-control can have a big impact. How can teachers build students' confidence in math? #ECEchat
  • jazzmeister2013 Jan 15 @ 10:07 PM EST
A4- SEL is VITAL to Ss success across any and all content areas. Incorporating SEL strategies helps Ss cope with and conquer difficult challenges in a positive and productive fashion. Allow Ss to explore, make mistakes, and grow, encouraging them along the way. #ecechat
  • SierraDingesISD Jan 15 @ 10:07 PM EST
A4: Giving students the language to help them be successful! Teaching them that part of being a mathematician is failing and continuing to persevere! Also celebrating success when mastering new skills #ECEChat

A4: flipped learning... have the students become the teacher, give them an opportunityto catch errors or practice in small group setting #ECEchat
  • LauraGarlow Jan 15 @ 10:08 PM EST
A4 I help build my Ss confidence in math by referring to all of them as mathematicians frequently! We also do a lot of sharing strategies, and helping others. #ecechat

  • lindsay8503 Jan 15 @ 10:08 PM EST
A4: I try to make math as fun as possible. To help build confidence, I also try to keep interactions as positive as possible. For instance, if one of my kids misidentifies a number, I'll say, "Almost, It's a 3". #ecechat
  • weberkinder Jan 15 @ 10:08 PM EST
A4: I build my students confidence in Math with praise, engaging lessons, small group practice. If students do not get the early foundation of Math, they lose confidence. It’s so important to build those foundational skills so they can be confident! #ecechat
