A1: Sometimes I feel like I get the maker movement and project based learning mixed up. I feel like both use the curriculum in real life and more exciting ways. #utedchat
A1: I will admit that I don't know about the Maker Movement. But I will say kids can't properly do science without having opportunities to make or create. It can look chaotic but kids should be engaged. #utedchat
#utedchat Leslie Lewis here Maker Movement looks different for each teacher and each situation. Ts do what they can with what they have both in time, $, support and supplies.
A1: Obviously the 'maker movement' looks different in wood shop or robotics than in a History class, but we do make arguments and there is some design involved in a variety of activities... #utedchat
A1: The maker movement to me is the re-design of the traditional shop class - on steroids, with technology, art, design thinking and science. Oh, and it's about student exploration more than teacher driven projects. And that's just a start. #utedchat. #MakerEd
I like to describe the maker movement as tinker education. Gives kids the space to figure out how things work. Value in fixing vs. replacing something. #utedchat
A1 Maker Movement means focus on iterations, attempting and trying new things, the very essence of learning. Classrooms should have inquiry and support and have organized chaos, just like a regular class but with power tools #utedchat
A2: One 6th grade teacher @irvrhees in Weber district using arduino's with students to create lunchboxes that notify if temperature inside lunchbox is unsafe...I think I got that right #utedchat
#utedchat A2 One project I did was Frankentoys. I bought toys at DI and had the Ts in the summer class cut off heads and glue on other bodies. The were very hesitant to cut off heads! Ha Ha. Also had take apart center with vacuum and old CPU.
A2 Mouse trap cars. Love that someone in one of my #uenmakers classes gave us the idea from something she did in her classes. No tech involved, but lots of innovation. #utedchat
A1: I think the difference between project based learning and the maker movement is that a makerspace makes an actual solution to the problem. Problem or project based learning can be a idea on a posterboard or a powerpoint. #utedchat
I have begun to meet other maker Ed teachers and seen some great makerspaces - We hope to have a teacher maker conference at @RowlandHall again this year - more to be announced, but I hope to gather the forces and learn form each other! #utedchat.
A1: One of my favorite design challenges was following up a reading of the Three Little Pigs with the challenge of building a house the big bad wolf can’t blow down. #utedchat
Hey #utedchat I'm checking in tonight! Maker movement discussion? I'm interested to see how I can use this kind of stuff in secondary school and in history.
A2 A simple one I like is having Ss make flashlights for the kinders (for some 'real' context) using just a battery, small light bulb, and a little wire. It's a good challenge at the start of a electricity unit - but they get it eventually through trial and error #utedchat
#utedchat A2 Building a mini cardboard neighborhood of their school neighborhood. Ts made drive through car washes, Taco Times, etc. all with cardboard and paper in a big box.
A2: Rube Goldbergs with marbles and magnets, miniature golf course, built objects to help refugees, an @arduino garden, cardboard architecture, to name a few. #utedchat#makered
Speaking of ovens, I have found a really cool product called @ThePocketLab that reads temperature, acceleration, magnetic field, etc. Really great for STEM and adding feedback to your maker projects. #utedchat
Q3 What are some tools and/or skills that you use? What are some tools/skills that you would like to learn how to use? Alternately, is it necessary to have specific tools, space, technical skills, or equipment to incorporate making in classrooms? #utedchat

A2 One of the best I saw was student made games using cardboard. Reason I liked it was teacher had other students give feedback to each student and then use that in next iteration #utedchat

#utedchat I like the way everyone tonight has a specific goal for their products tonight like energy efficient tiny houses and making pizza, a flashlight, making a house a wolf can't blow down. Good work.

It's a type of problem solving and thinking that I kind of wish had been cultivated in my later years but it kind of ended in elementary for me. #utedchat
A3 I like the idea of using basic supplies (stuff you find around school) for maker projects. I still think the best tool is the kid's imagination. #utedchat
A3 I like the idea of teaching resilience and tenacity. If a student really wants to build something they will learn how to use a specific tool or software to do it. And if it doesn't exist yet, then they will build that too. #utedchat
Do you have Makey Makey to use in your classroom already? I would be more than happy to share what I have for a week or two, if you want to try them? #utedchat

A3: Start simple. Build skills alongside the students. get donations, be creative, risk doing something new. Most important skill is the willingness to jump in. I've grown the skillsets to match what I've done. #utedchat
A3 - the idea of maker spaces is new and pretty foreign to me. So I have no idea what kinds of tools I would even use. But I know that I want to use technology in my classroom in a way that lets students create more than consume! #utedchat
A3: Nothing beats a laser cutter. I have never had one until this past year and it is awesome. Not to brag but it is a game changer for my classes. #utedchat
Q4: How do you implement maker in your classroom. Is it for a small unit, the entire term? I struggle with grading, it is a necessary evil. Any suggestions or comments?j #utedchat
Nothing virtual yet. Technology is limited in my school. My Ss favorite project is creating the most economical cereal boxes and then designing the box and a commercial. I want to do more. #UTedChat
It’s a period of time set aside 4 students to turn large cardboard (oven, microwave & refrigerator—and assorted smaller) boxes into anything their imaginations can come up with. Scissors, connectors, tape, markers, random art supplies etc. are provided but no rules. 😉 #utedchat

Registration for #edcampstgeorge is now open. Get out of the inversion and join us for a FREE day of learning in St. George. February 3rd at Crimson View Elementary. Go to https://t.co/Xgw7Ozk9Yf to register. #utedchat
A4 I try to fit in making when it makes sense with what we're learning and not as an 'extra' all the time. Grade for me is more of a participation grade - you did it, learned from it, stuck with it. #utedchat
A4.5: A brand new resource is a listserv for Utah Maker educators: makers@lists.uen.org. Hope this is a great resource to turn to for questions, answers, announcements, etc. #utedchat
#utedchat My granddaughters class made a cardboard fair. She and her friend made a fortune teller booth from a refrigerator box, some netting, xmas stars and other around the house stuff. It was awesome. They had great fortunes for fake quarters.

That sounds super fun! I love the idea of projects but just have a hard time committing enough class time to them. I just have so many things I want my students to learn. I have committment problems.. #utedchat
Q4.5 Google! and here... I didn't even know the Maker Movement existed. I've always done STEM based activities, but didn't know there was a movement. #UTedChat
A4: Great question. I have a maker class in the MS, so I do longer projects (12-16 classes). Int he HS they are 3-4 days. I make them do a lot of planning, drawing, and designing before building. I allow groups of 1-4. This is one place where a kid alone can be good. #utedchat
#utedchat A5 I have found lots of resources online. I have also visited lots of classrooms and some libraries that provide maker spaces. Talking to other Ts and Librarians is inspiring. I need to go visit the classroom of @Chronicbeard
Q5: At a Utah Maker Educator conference what would you like to see happen or learn how to do? Would you be interested in presenting or sharing projects, skills, ideas? #utedchat
A 4.5. I went to Constructing Modern Knowledge conference (life changing). "Invent to Learn" is a must read. There are good how to books for most technology. Twitter too. #utedchat
Life changing makes me really want to look into it more. Have always seen it advertised but not I am very interested. Is that the one back East or in Oakland?
#utedchat
A5 I would love to see math based projects. I don't know enough about the subject to be able to present yet. I'm super interested in the Maker Movement though.
#UTedChat
#utedchat A5 At a Utah Maker Conference I would like to learn how to make what I know is relevant and valuable fit into a day that might be constrained by what my administrator considers is relevant. How do I convince others?
A5 - If there were a Utah Maker Educator conference, I'd definitely be looking specifically for things I could do in a secondary social studies classroom. How do non-STEM subjects achieve their objectives but still participate in makerspaces? #utedchat
A5: Arduino and other micro-controllers. Cardboard skills, Processing (my new favorite program), Circuitry and soldering. I'd like to see teachers come so they can be makers for a day or two - to make their own projects. #utedchat
A5 I like the idea of showing mini lessons that can be done in less than 30 minutes. Often we only think of big projects that take days or weeks. #utedchat
A5: I teach science and can think of a lot of applications, but I am also an instructional coach and would love ideas outside of my subject area, especially in math #utedchat
I'll make it happen - perhaps we could dedicate one or more of the playground sessions at @ucet exclusively as a MakerMeetUp! In addition - if you have not submitted, but want to be a part of the playground maker thing, DM me and I'll get you on the list! #utedchat

Q6: Would you be interested in presenting a skill or student’s maker work at a Mini Maker Faire (SLC April 14 or Thanksgiving Point September 15)?#utedchat
I really enjoy doing this with students. I have found a few shortcuts that save a lot of money. Also there is a Project Stitch conference at USU in the beginning of August that would be worth checking out. #utedchat
Math is fun with building 3D shapes, Tangrams, other geometric designs and puzzles. There are lots of maker opportunities. There are some great applications in coding too. #utedchat
A6 I would like to show off what I have been working on with @stem101 We have some really great STEM/Maker projects that will be up and running by this Spring. #utedchat
@dallingraham and @mrteuscher - Great chat tonight! I have to take off for now. It was a pleasure to talk about #makerEd in Utah. Looking forward to the follow up conversations! #utedchat. Over and Out!
Thanks @dallingraham for hosting tonight. Loved learning about the Maker Movement. Gonna have to get on board. #UTedChat Have a great night everyone! 'Til next time.
