Hi! My name is Rachel, I am a pre-service elementary and special ed major at Grove City College in PA. This is my first chat so bear with me while I am trying to figure it out #formativechat
Q1: What role does assessment play in your classroom on a daily basis? How are you balancing it with instruction and other components of learning? #formativechat
A1 always trying to evaluate how Ss are doing, observations, conversations, just moving around the room and seeing the learning happen and make time to talk #formativechat
A1: Formative assessment is continually happening in my classroom. I’m gauging where the Ss are and what I can do to help them achieve beyond what they expect. #formativechat
Q1 is now up in #formativechat ! What role does assessment play in your classroom on a daily basis? How are you balancing it with instruction and other components of learning?

Q1: What role does assessment play in your classroom on a daily basis? How are you balancing it with instruction and other components of learning? #formativechat
A1: When assessments are reframed as opportunities to showcase mastery they are no longer intimidating. In a #blended and #selfpaced course, my students are constantly showcasing mastery #formativechat
A1 - We reflect on our learning every day in class. It is either our warm-up or closing activity. This is followed by an instructional piece tied to what they know or learned. Sometimes we adjust based on the “enjoyment factor!” #formativechat
A1 Assessment is becoming part of the daily routine It could be a specific #FormativeAssessment or even just a mental assessment to see where we need to go Assessment drives instruction #formativechat
A1: Formative assessments are major part of my lessons. I start will a FA on last classes topic, do a lesson, have them do your turns and then FA them again at the end. #formativechat
A1: I am working on using assessment to drive my instruction rather than just the curriculum. I use assessment to form small groups and evaluate and reflect on my teaching. #formativechat
A1: Assessments drive instruction, formatives almost daily. Not only a check on student learning progression, but a measure of YOUR impact on student learning. #formativechat
A1 Assessment of some sort takes place constantly. Whether it's assessing class, group, or individuals and on a variety levels. Teacher make 100s on assessments in the course of a day. Leads to decisions on how to best implement other learning components. #formativechat
Q1: What role does assessment play in your classroom on a daily basis? How are you balancing it with instruction and other components of learning? #formativechat
A1 Formative Assessment is always at the forefront of my teaching. Whenever I am planning to teach a concept, my first thought is always "how will I check their understanding?" #formativechat
A1 - We reflect on our learning every day in class. It is either our warm-up or closing activity. This is followed by an instructional piece tied to what they know or learned. Sometimes we adjust based on the “enjoyment factor!” #formativechat
A1: Assessment should be an ongoing process. Note: this is not the same thing as grading! Students should get constant feedback to achieve their next step, while being allowed to fix things they missed. It's a constant loop (the design process!) #formativechat
Q1: What role does assessment play in your classroom on a daily basis? How are you balancing it with instruction and other components of learning? #formativechat
A1: Ts are formatively assessing all day, they listen, they watch, they take the lead from their students, adjusting instruction as they go, meeting Ss needs in the moment #formativechat 👍
A1 assessment helps to guide and inform instruction by letting me know where my Ss are as learners so I know what skills to target. Without assessment it would be like throwing darts at the wall and hoping there was a target for them to hit #formativechat
A1: Have been focusing on encouraging Ss to "drive" the assessment of their learning. Having them articulate and provide evidence of their mastery. Takes the onus off of the instructor "owning" the assessment process. #formativechat
A1 I incorporate reflective writing or discussion into most classes. Not only do I need to know what students know; THEY need to know what they know. #formativechat
A1: I see teachers using their formative assessment to plan subsequent instruction regularly. It is also used to form small groups for guided instruction. #formativechat
A1. Dan from Wisconsin. Almost forgot about this chat. Daily, it’s formative- what are they getting, what are they struggling with, what questions do they have. It’s used to guide what we do next, what pace we take. #formativechat
Q1: What role does assessment play in your classroom on a daily basis? How are you balancing it with instruction and other components of learning? #formativechat
A1: I have the long term goals in mind - sound good for the concert. Getting to that point are a lot of short term assessments. These are reviewed and changed after every class. #formativechat
A1 Most informal questioning for mastery or understanding I formative in nature. “Thumbs up, thumbs down” is effective and efficient. Our monitoring of understanding drives everything in the classroom. #formativechat
A1:The goal is to do an assessment everyday in my class. Quick assessments are planned into the lessons; one before and after, while sometimes i do before and during. The assessments are mostly formative so that I can provide feedback and to build on prior knowledge #FormativeChat
A2: I might be stating the obvious but @goformative is a great resource to keep the students engaged during class. My students are obsessed with the immediate feedback - especially during review activities #formativechat
A1. Formative Assessment drives my next day’s instruction. I look at what worked, where we are getting stuck and then recalculate. I can’t plan more than a day or so anymore. So much depends on what happened in the previous lesson. #formativechat
A1: I use several formative assessments throughout the day, from MRS cards to exit tickets. They guide my instruction, small groups and show me what I can skip and what needs to be retaught #formativechat
A2 conversations, and providing different options for assessments, sometimes just asking Ss to share some knowledge or explain something to me #formativechat
A2: Changing the type of formative assessment to best meet the lesson/skill is a great strategy to keep engagement at its maximum. Whether it’s a @goformative, @gokahoot, @quizziz, or @flipgrid, Ss are engaged. #formativechat
A2 Allow Ss to be assessed continuously. Not just a one time performance but rather revise and resubmit and become experts before it’s “finished” #formativechat
If it were paper or other traditional forms of assessment then yes, too much, but a variety is better, simple observations a question, convo, can all be assessments #formativechat Great question!
A2 I try to have FAs that I can collect data as a whole class, thru group share, or have Ss self-assess Honestly, I am still & always will be working on improving the assessment process #formativechat
A2 - Building relationships is the cornerstone to building engagements levels. Try to create an environment where risk taking is encouraged and mistakes are celebrated. Change things up a bit and have some fun. #formativechat
A1: assessment should be happening daily - its not evaluation but making observations and having conversations w/ Ss to see where they are in their learning - do they know where they are? #formativechat
A2: Formative assessment can be administered in a variety of ways through a broad array of mediums. Allowing students to decide how they want to showcase their mastery is a great way to differentiate and elevate engagement #formativechat
A2: I try to give Ss many ways to demonstrate understanding by keeping in mind what kind of learning styles I have in my c-room. Rubrics help... A lot! They don't realize they're being assessed sometimes. #formativechat
So true! I’m glad that I get to redo a lot of my learning and become better at my craft as well! Always work towards something better! #growthmindset#formativechat
A2 Allow Ss to be assessed continuously. Not just a one time performance but rather revise and resubmit and become experts before it’s “finished” #formativechat
A2 - Story telling, humor, lots of popsicle sticks, teacher challenges and just being happy. All about expectations and positive classroom vibes. #formativechat
A2: I love the possibilities in this Q! FA done hands-on by Ss, creating products of their learning, gives them multiple levels of exploring and revising their learning! Ss centered and authentic, as they progress toward goals! 👍 #formativechat
A2: An important factor is for Ss to know the WHY of the assessment. How it relates to their learning, how it informs what they are attempting to master, and how they can apply the feedback to their future learning. #formativechat
A1 #formativechat I use formative everyday in my warm-ups. It helps me to get immediate feedback on if my Ss understand the concept or if I need to go over it. Sometimes it's a simple error such as using diameter instead of radius in volume of cylinders
A2: when I’m gathering info about students as readers the rest of the class is reading. Not doing centres. Or worksheets about reading. Actually reading. I spend a lot of time developing this routine. Kids need to feel motivated and understand its importance. #formativechat
A2b - Choice, choice. Did I say choice? We have to allow for multiple opportunities for students. Not all will buy in right away, but the alternative is fitting every circle into a square. #formativechat
A2 Ss understand that assessment makes me a better teacherThey like the feedback that my use of FA provides to them as it helps them level up. They are at the point that really understand that learning is fluid and just keep moving forward using feedback as a guide #formativechat
A2: Engage Ss in planning activities, gamify learning, make tasks risk free, give Ss multiple opportunities to try, triangular activities to accommodate for multiple learning styles/interests, are some things I do #formativechat
A2 Integrating formative assessment into an meaningful lesson means students are already engaged. The assessment is just part of what we do. Sometimes varying the task helps; sometimes it’s better to stick to a routine. #formativechat
Yes sometimes the exit tickets get old to them so I try to do different things and some more non traditional so its not looked at so much as like a quiz or check up. And sometimes doing them during can change my direction of my lesson if needed. #formativeChat#EDA655
A high impact practice is to have personal conferences with Ss. Very useful to have Ss explain what they know and how they can address gaps in learning. I can't hide behind written comments on a paper, either! #formativechat
Great! Let me know if you have questions. Summer is a great time to do some beta-testing at home (I use my own children) before you try it for real with the Ss! :) #formativechat
A2: my students enjoy doing the show your work and I also try and do pair shares where students can discuss their answer before raising their hand. Keeps them engaged and gives them more confidence to answer #formativechat
A2 I use different tools depending on the task, and always try to incorporate feedback when I came so they get instant gratification and know what they missed right away. #formativechat
Hello @BetsyDeVosED ! I would be honored if you would follow me on Twitter. I’m an educator and would like to collaborate with you on behalf of public education. #PublicEducation is the only choice.
Allowing for self-assessment is a great way to keep students engaged. With greater ownership over the process, comes greater engagement ;) #formativechat
A2: assessments have to be varied o/w Ss will disengage; Ss need to know the why and how - if they see no follow up, they will lose interest. Games, exit tickets, entry tickets, community circles, conversations, probing Qs, observations, should all be used. #formativechat
A2: One of my old favorites was the Snowball (paper) fight..Kids wrote the Qs on paper, had a snowball fight, picked up the snowballs and responded to the Q #formativechat
A2- Switch it up as much as possible. Don't use the same strategies time after time. @goformative, @quizizz , @kahoot, Google Forms,@plickers and many others make it fun and interesting for me and my Ss. #formativechat
A3 Be sure that the learning targets are accessible and achievable, and give them feedback often so they know what they know. Create experiences that are low floor and high ceiling so that every Ss can reach for their peak! #formativechat
Q3 is now up in #formativechat ! This time of the year can be a bit overwhelming for everyone. How can you help students sustain their motivation for learning and prevent burn out?
A3: I think of you empower students to take control of their learning through goal setting and doing their own progress monitoring, they are more “in it” and will want to work harder to see more growth #formativechat
A3. Choice. They are more inclined to work for something they have ownership of. Personalize learning by allowing Ss to pick summatives or the tools to learn the concepts. #formativechat
A3: Choice, keep offering a variety of choices for where & how they want to learn, as well as the way they will produce their learning, they will stay fired-up! #formativechat
A3: In order to not have burnout for Ss and keep motivation high, I try to do a variety of tasks during the week at varying levels of difficulty. If we do something intense for two days, we do something less intimidating for a day or two. #formativechat
A3: I started doing games/activities during our test review. I did digital breakouts that my Ss loved. They're competing in teams and have to solve problems in order to get the code to get to the next round. Worksheets do not motivate Ss #formativechat
A2 I like to use small group conversations on topics the Ss bring up. I informally assess their oral skills and they think we are just chatting. #formativechat
A3: Simple: make what they learn relevant to their lives. This is not masking content standards through tech or games. Instead, we need to embrace lessons that MATTER (e.g. passions, applicable math, applied English, career building). #formativechat
A3: Monitor Ss learning, give timely/descriptive feedback, encourage transfer of learning, make learning relevant, authentic & meaningful ##formativechat
definitely, form relationships, Ss become more motivated when authentic and have choice, better and more sustained engagement = more learning potential #formativechat
If you haven't joined the community, I suggest you do. So many resources and so much support. https://t.co/QWSXhY7FQg#formativechat You will ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ it!
A3 We can help students sustain motivation and prevent burnout by helping them connect their learning to their own values. (Stretch and play breaks help too!) #formativechat
A3 - Keep things fresh. Enjoy the learning process with them and encourage them to share their successes and challenges with each other. Need to model what we expect as well. Take some risks and try new things ourselves #formativechat
A2: Teaching Math I love to do hands on activities and using manipulatives. I carry my clipboard, alot lol, also taking observations and notes on specific skills that I'm looking for, most times I use a small rubric to check specific goals. #EDA655#FormativeCHat
A3 - Did this today. Called the “gas gap!” Measurement of our caring compared to students. We also must be honest with our emotions and expectations. Raise the bar when it’s much easier to lower it! #formativechat
A3 Ss motivation reflects Ts attitude The & more natural, calm, & co-learner I am with my Ss the more they relax & just go The more stress I show the more burn out my Ss will have #formativechat
A3: Just after you settle into a routine. BAM, change up one thing. I like to test out new ideas so it tends to keep things fresh. I usually try something new in one class and solicit feedback before rolling it out to the masses. They love having input #formativechat
A3: Connecting assessment to instruction. When the assessment process exists in a vacuum, Ss realize the disconnect quickly. Must provide agency to tackle the perception that assessment is something "done to" the learner. #formativechat
A3: We need to make a point of connecting kids to authentic learning opportunities. No more playing school. Kids who are engaged are self-motivated. #formativechat
A3 Connect learning to students’ interests. Provide opportunities for connecting with other classes and with experts from outside the school walls. #formativechat
Instructor passion and energy impacts the Ss perseverance. Why should a student stay engaged when the instructor behaves as if he/she doesn't want to be there? #formativechat
A3. Use FA to guide Ss in their proximal zone of development. Don’t rush through practice as that’s where learning is solidified. Celebrate the small successes along the way and complement effort. When kids see that their grittiness pays off it becomes a habit. #formativechat
A3: I am lost in the Tweet Deck and cannot find who was talking about choice boards, but I did a Tic-Tac-Toe board last week that was so fun and full of choice. I thought I would share:https://t.co/8YUZYMqeK4#formativechat
Thank you everyone for joining #formativechat tonight. It has been such a pleasure interacting with you all tonight. I hope you can make it back next week, same time, same great energy, same great people!
A3: Student choice, keeping it relevant and ask them to help plan assessments and make connections. Student ownership increases their motivation #formativechat
A3 Try new ideas and tools to keep them active, take some risks with new student led assessments, or student created ones and see what happens, new ideas :) #formativechat
wow! this is awesome I am also loving all the talk about student choice, it is something we have talked about a lot in my classes recently! #formativechat
A3: We do a lot of hands-on activities. Towards the end of the year, we do more extensive hands-on activities. The culminating activity is our Mousetrap Car Engineering Challenge. (And it's ungraded.) #formativechat
Update: You can now access our library right from the homepage! This is HUGE for teachers who are checking out #goformative for the first time! Spread the word :)
#formativechat
#formativechat a1 Assessing and self checking are a daily habit for me, so I want it to be a daily habit for students too. It's a lot easier to chew the elephant one bite at a time. 1st how does the animal look, well before a paragraph about the animal
#formativechat a2
Use to and fro activities like interviews, role plays, tasks where we all have a bit of the info, so that the strategy becomes part of assessing. Tchr is then more able to observe actively.
#formativechat a3 I'm stuck in the worst course ever, so I'm breaking it down into manageable pieces. I have friends complimenting me and regularly get feedforward as it's my soup of learning. Will share with future ss. Voila #edchat
