Good evening, #iaedchat people! Dan Butler, principal of #eesbobcats in the Western Dubuque School District. Excited to engage with everyone and moderate the conversation tonight.
Hi, I'm Savanna Gray studying early childhood and psychology at the University of Northern Iowa! Excited to be involved in this chat this evening! #iaedchat
Hello! My name is Bailey Tinderholt, I am currently studying at the University of Northern Iowa and I'm excited for the conversation tonight! #iaedchat#LitEd
A1: I think having an attitude of gratitude is a big part of a school's culture. If you don't have it, a large chunk is missing from your school culture.
#iaedchat
A1: Being mindful and thankful on a daily basis for the people I get to serve and know through my work. It comes down to your mindset. I choose to be joyful and thankful for the opportunities of each day. Tell people you appreciate them and what they add to your life! #iaedchat
A1: Being thankful that I have the opportunity to work with students and help them grow in their learning. Also, being pleased with the results that you see throughout the school year. #IAedchat#UNILitEd
A1: This is about focusing on the things you have or what is going well within your space. An intentional focus here allows your eyes to be opened to the amazing around you. #iaedchat
I am not working in one school this year, but across the State of Iowa. I have a thankful heart each time I go into a school, see the dedicated staff caring for, supporting, believing in, educating & reaching out to kids & their families! It's overwhelms me. #iaedchat
A1: For myself, I am thankful to be given the opportunity to study my own desired career path. I am thankful for all the support my college professors have given me over the past few years #IAedchat
A1. I think about modeling a positive attitude for my students to show them that there is good in everything. I also think about creating meaningful relationships with my students to show how grateful I am for them. #iaedchat#UNILITED
A1. Being thankful and extending positive compliments to one another around the school, teacher shout-outs, Ss shout-outs, good news being shared about culture, growth, kindness, etc. #iaedchat
A1. Having gratitude in the classroom is such an important thing to express these days, everyone has something to be grateful for and it would lead to a more optimistic environment in your classroom and hopefully decrease negativity! #iaedchat#LitEd
A1: I’m grateful for a career in which I get to interact with mathematicians, musicians, artists, scientists, writers, athletes, and historians every day.#iaedchat
A1. Being thankful and extending positive compliments to one another around the school, teacher shout-outs, Ss shout-outs, good news being shared about culture, growth, kindness, etc. #iaedchat
A1: I think about finding the joy in the day to day. I just read an article about how to count the good. Practicing gratitude will help us find true joy! https://t.co/DC3SQkzIj8#IAedchat
A2: We did a monthly gratitude challenge last month as a district. The goal was to send one hand written note of gratitude each working day. I like coming up with different "challenges" each month for myself and students. #iaedchat
A1. Having gratitude in the classroom is such an important thing to express these days, everyone has something to be grateful for and it would lead to a more optimistic environment in your classroom and hopefully decrease negativity! #iaedchat#LitEd
A2 positive referrals for students and staff. I also write two notes a day and highlight the positive things going on in our building on social media #iaedchat
A2: Our staff sends each other these drops where we thank each other, praise each other, encourage each other, etc. It's a great opportunity to build morale and community. #iaedchat
a2). For me, I need to comment on it. even on social media.. I notice in my facebook memories I don't always shout out for the great people in my life. Make gratitude part of your daily vocab. #iaedchat
A2: Have the students say what they are thankful for each day and write it down in a journal so they can go back and look at what they wrote. Also, having volunteer opportunities where the students can help out the community #IAedchat#UNILitEd
A2: I like the daily practice of keeping a gratitude journal and writing down three things for which I am grateful each day. Doing this with discipline and intention. #iaedchat
A2 We have an awesome positive referral system we use at West High—makes sending “good notes” to students and colleagues easy to do at any time! #iaedchat
A2. Being grateful/thankful is a purposeful act. It requires us to look outwards, to reach out to people including and especially those students and parents who need us the most. Whenever I feel down, I know it is because I am focusing too much on me, myself & I. #iaedchat
Consider how you start your day with kids tomorrow. If you ask them to talk about their weekend, think of the kid who may have had an awful weekend and wants to forget it in their safe school space. Ask kids what they are excited to learn about. Make Monday joyful #iaedchat
A2.2: This is something that we use with our staff members: Witness to the Good https://t.co/5gE9g0VrnO. Anyone can submit this form at any time. #iaedchat
A2. Giving Ss opportunities to work on kindness projects, sharing positivity by the story of the "Orange Frog," sharing positive notes, positive compliments, etc. #iaedchat
A2: As I wish to work with younger children in the future, I think it’s important to teach them about gratitude then. Encouraging them to think about what they are grateful for at such a young age can encourage them to continue thinking this way as they grow #iaedchat#UNILitEd
A2: I think modeling the practice daily with Ts and Ss will set a tone of the importance of practicing gratitude. It may also be fun to do theme month or weeks- this week we will show gratitude to......as a way to change it up! #iaedchat
A2. Having your students write in gratitude journals daily with something that they're thankful for and have them share their favorite one from that week, this helps to create a positive environment and keep the students thankful all year round! #iaedchat#LitEd
a3) When I worked for University development in grad school.. I was told that you have to say thank you 3 or 4 times for it to be heard once.. can we overdo saying thanks? #iaedchat
A3: We see what we choose to see. If we intentionally practice gratitude, we live in a place of thanks and positive energy. It doesn't mean you're immune to negativity or naive- seeing only sunshine and rainbows; but you're on the lookout for and aware of the good. #iaedchat
A3: Practicing gratitude on a consistent basis allows us to retrain our brains to search for the positive and good things surrounding us. Something as simple as starting the day or ending the day listing three unique things for which we are grateful makes a difference. #iaedchat
A3: I recently read a children’s book called ‘Something Beautiful’ by Sharon Dennis Wyeth. In it, the young girl finds beauty in her community by seeing her neighborhood through other eyes. Having a different perspective can help combat negativity. #IAedchat#UNILitEd
A3: The article I posted earlier seems like a good start. We need to intentionally call out the good things, frequently to remember how often those happen. #IAedChat
A3: It would allow us to look on the positive side. It would also allow us to see all the things we are thankful for and help out the community that may be in need or does not have the things we have #IAedchat#UNILitEd
A3. Share your light with others! Although things may seem bad at times, there is always something to be grateful for. This will enable you to see the good that is in our world. #iaedchat#UNILITED
A3. I think that throughout life you are always going to run into these issues, it's important to always try to find the positive in every situation. We need to not only teach this to our students but model it everyday! #iaedchat#LitEd
Q3. Another thought is "Teacher Self-Care" education is a challenging, sometimes draining career - we must take care of ourselves mentally, physically & spiritually. #iaedchat
A3 - Intentionally looking for the positives and being grateful allows the opportunity to model behaviors of ‘managing up’ when all are faced with negative which builds the culture around us. #iaedchat
Hi my name is Alyk Williams & I am a junior at UNI majoring in Elementary Education and minoring in Literacy and Special Education. I am really passionate about working with children and I’m excited to be apart of this tweet chat. #iaedchat#UNILitEd
A1: Having an attitude of gratitude is about paying attention to the things you have and what is going well. This allows you to focus on the amazing things around you. #iaedchat#UNILitEd
a4) From gratitude also makes us aware of our advantages and privilege.. the more we are thankful for, the more we see our own advantages and the better we can serve students. #iaedchat
A4:
Gratitude- showing others what we are thankful for, makes us realize how much advantages and privileges we have. Helps us see what good we already have. #iaedchat
A4: It's your mindset. Do I see what I have to be thankful for? Even if I perceive that others are better off, do I see what is in my realm of gratitude? I can wish that I have ______ or I can be thankful that I have _______. Perspective makes the difference. #iaedchat
A4: I really like this quote! We have so much to be grateful for and may not always see all the things we have or are grateful for. The more grateful we are now, the more grateful we will be for things in the future #IAedchat#UNILitEd
A2: To spread the feeling of gratitude year round, one must take time each day to realize what they have in life and what they are truly grateful for. #iaedchat#UNILitEd
A4. I grew up listening to Zig Ziglar & brought a group of students to hear him speak. We changed our greeting after hearing him. When someone asked, "How are you?" Our new response was, "Better than good! It blessed the speaker & the listener just as this poster does! #iaedchat
You may be the bright spot for a kid. You may never fully know what they're facing but they need us to be the positive voice in a world of negatives. #iaedchat
A4: Gratitude is contagious. Once you start incorporating graditute in your life, you will find it hard to not find something that you are completely thankful for #iaedchat#UNILitEd
A4. I absolutely love this! I relate this to one of my favorite quotes "Whether you think you'll have a good day or a bad day, you're right". Our thoughts have more power over our actions than we know. The more grateful you are, more great things will come to you #iaedchat#LitEd
A3: Having gratitude allows you to focus on the positives around you no matter what negatives may be happening, there is always something to be grateful for. #iaedchat#UNILitEd
A4. For being thankful for what you have, allows you more graditude to share with others! Through the beauty and grace of thankfulness, kindness, and good deeds. #iaedchat
A4 agree 100% when we are thankful for the good fortune, positivity, people & kindness in our lives we create a culture of caring and partnership building a stronger appreciation for our lives. Our attitude and the attitude of those around us will then spread like fire #iaedchat
A4. Wow, this is an incredibly insightful quote. It goes to show that when we take notice and appreciate the things that life has granted us wonderful things can happen! #iaedchat#UNILITED
I need to sign off to get some things prepared for tomorrow! I am grateful for some great ideas & the inspiring conversation tonight! Thank you!! #iaedchat
A4: There are always thing to be grateful for. By having gratitude you worry less about things you are not in control of. The more gratitude you express now, the more gratitude you will have in the future. #iaedchat#UNILitEd
A4: If I didn’t bring a little @BreneBrown into a gratitude conversation I’d be doing it wrong. When tragedy occurs it’s the little things people miss the most. We need to celebrate those things more. #IAedChat
A5 I make them the work and they will know how much I appreciate them. I’m a big believer that your treatment of them will rub off and eventually you will win them over and they will follow your lead #iaedchat
A5: I would ask them what they are grateful and have them list the things they are grateful in a journal. I would then ask them why they are grateful for those things they listed and have them explain giving reasons and examples #IAedchat#UNILitEd
I recently blogged about how Gratitude saved the day for me with #iste19 reviews.. https://t.co/4WnJisE9T0 Maybe we need to support the overall practice of gratitude to make it more the norm. #iaedchat
A5: "It may seem like fluff when you have a lot to be thankful for. We may not realize just how much someone may need our words and encouragement. Can you help me spread goodness around here?" #iaedchat
A5: Gratitude = happiness. It doesn’t matter how you chose to express it, externally or internally. The act of feeling grateful and thankful will in turn make you feel good #iaedchat#UNILitEd
A5: I would dig deeper into the why and where their feelings are coming from. I would ask them to try a practice for a little bit too and reflect with me after. #IAedChat
A6:
*Thank You Note Fridays
*Gratefulness Tree on my Classroom Door
*Writing a note to each student once a month

*Modeling different ideas for my students.
#iaedchat
A6: I am bringing gratitude jars to the teachers I work with tomorrow and I want to add something to the jar each day. My hope is that they add to each other’s too. #IAedChat
A6: Being present and joyful at home and work. If I expect people to be joyful and enthusiastic, I get to model it. Don't chain myself to my desk or office. As the leader, I need to be the pulse, the metronome, the cheerleader of the people in our school. #iaedchat
#iaedchat A5: If gratitude is only hashtags or posts, then it IS fluff. Gratitude must be lived, be active. If our actions and gratitude become who we are and how we operate, then there is no argument against it.
a6) For me, it's about showing up to others' events.. if they show up for you.. even if it's inconvenient.. showing up is important to me. #5lovelanguages#iaedchat
A6: Talk to your peers, friends, students and family and figure out what they are thankful for! Let them know that you appreciate them and they may pass that on to others! #iaedchat#UNILitEd
A6.2: Our instructional coach and I have a surprise for teachers this week before we have a few days off to thank them for the time and energy they have put in to closing the gap in reading. So excited for what they've been doing in their classrooms and the impact. #iaedchat
A6: Taking time each day to think or write about what you are thankful for in that moment. Spread kindness and positivity to everyone you come in contact with in the community. #iaedchat#UNILitEd
A6: TBH, my first thought of the day is a desire to stay in bed. But then I challenge myself to think of something I’m looking forward to that day, and then I’m ready to go! #iaedchat
A6. Be patient and smile. Share what you're thankful for and ask others to think about what they're thankful for. Share with your students that you are thankful for their hard work! #iaedchat#LitEd

A7: I think this comes in celebrating the day to day. The little things that we don’t even realize we would miss if you didn’t have them. Find joy in these moments! #IAedChat
A6: TBH, my first thought of the day is a desire to stay in bed. But then I challenge myself to think of something I’m looking forward to that day, and then I’m ready to go! After that, smile, be kind, be genuine. #iaedchat
A7: I can feel extremely satisfied and fulfilled when I connect the dots between all that I have in my life and see the richness of experience and people who I am connected to. No matter what you face, there is breath in your lungs, so something's gotta be right. #iaedchat
a7).. Its funny.. this week someone commented on the fact I wear an ankle brace when I travel.. I told them I hurt it when I was in Rome.. Don't feel bad for me.. others have it much worse. #iaedchat
A7: Another wonderful quote! This holds so much truth! If we deny ourselves the opportunity to be grateful how will we ever truly be happy? To find our true happiness we have to begin with ourselves and notice the wonderful things we've been blessed with! #iaedchat#UNILITED
A7: If you concentrate on what you do not have, you will never be grateful for what you do have. Look at the things you are grateful, and in return, you will see even more things you are grateful for #IAedchat#UNILitEd
A7: Love this quote. I have it on the wall in my classroom.
Focus on what you have.... and be grateful. This is what I am trying to focus on the rest of this year.
#iaedchat
A7. Being thankful for what you have: good health, family food, clothing, necessities, etc. love, caring, kindness, good heart is more than always being unfullfilled and constantly wanting more! #iaedchat
A7: Be thankful for what you have and can have. Focus on the things you can control and do not worry about the things you have no control over. #iaedchat#UNILitEd
A7:Wonderful quote! And know who your people are that bring out the best in you. Lean on each other during the challenging days, and celebrate together on all the others. #iaedchat
I am so thankful for all of you who take time to join us on #iaedchat. Thankful for @danpbutler and @townsleyaj as co-moderators. I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving & realize what a blessing you are to the kids you care for every day. #iaedchat
A7. If you only think about all the great things that you have in your life you will never stop counting, but if you only think of the things you don't have you would also never stop counting. It all comes down to what you would rather spend your days thinking of #IAedchat#LitEd
Thank you to the co-moderators @danpbutler, @townsleyaj, and @duffysclassroom. Be sure to also follow some of the new friends you met on #IAedchat to continue the conversation & grow your PLN.
