Q2) How do you build capacity within your school to strengthen family engagement?
A1 Parents communicating with us DURING class because we asked for it. 😮
Thank you for the insightful answers for Q1.
Family Engagement--> intentional, authentic, listening, & communication is key
RT
Q2 How do you build capacity within your school to strengthen family engagement?
A2: Build strong relationships. Do not make school feel isolated from the family experience.
A1 Parents welcomed through multiple channels. In person, by phone, e-mail, text, twitter
A1 When asked Ss tell you their parents/guardians feel comfortable coming to the school & talking with anyone
A2- Be open to ideas; encourage parent participation daily; actively support PTA; collaboration, growth mindset.
have a niece in the Des Moines school system. Glad you're here!
A2) Open communication and encouraging parents to help. Always provide suggestions to parents as well.
RT Q2 How do you build capacity within your school to strengthen family engagement?
A2 Twitter, and FB to share info, Surveys to gather feedback, Family Nights planned with intentionality.
A1: Engagement goes beyond just showing up. It provides opportunity to influence the outcome.
Is this feedback from a formal survey? Or everyday communication? https://t.co/bbJ7tpFLBd
A1 When asked any parent will confidently say they feel listened to & have reasonable options for addressing problems/issues
A2: Multiple ways to communicate with parents - encouraged to make P/t communication a priority.
A2: Providing as many outlets for communication as possible. Make Ps aware of what is going on and how they can be a part of it.
A2 Provide T practical, feasible options/strategies for building relationships w/ all parents, even the ones that drive them nuts!
Q2) Teacher and administration transparency. No guesswork about academic goals.
A2 Build capacity with families by giving abundant opportunities, building trust, and constantly communicating.
Effective and genuine communication. https://t.co/zI2ye5jmtq
A2: Providing as many outlets for communication as possible. Make Ps aware of what is going on and how they can be a part of it.
Give families a voice and let them know they are heard. Show respect...these are their babies.
One of our finest, spearheaded a family resource center that is just the bees knees!
A2 Build relationships admin down, T to T, admin & T to Ss. Model & Communication.
A2 provide training to all staff on how to welcome, help parents know how and that they are capable of helping their child/school
A2) Find out how fams want to be comm w/ & don't assume that comm w/ fams is a natural skill. Help & support staff that needs it!
Intriguing. What's an example of this? https://t.co/AQsmqwtmDj
- Family engagement = Making each mistake or failure an opportunity for learning without blame or judgment.
A2(b) Be open-minded, never assume, be inclusive
The power of voice! Rapport is so important. https://t.co/Rrdhhf5cAA
Give families a voice and let them know they are heard. Show respect...these are their babies.
A2: You meet families where they are: Breakfast with Principal, Family Nights, a School App, School Blog, Social Media, etc.
A2 Provide all staff ongoing PD that equips them w/ the skill set to always interact positively w/ALL parents; include role playing
nice! Is it open for parents to come in any time?
Our principal has been taking tours through to see our Summit Base Learning. Told parents to schedule one or stop by for a 1 on 1.
Excellent pt on how fams want to communicate. I include a ? abt this on a survey to Ps. https://t.co/MSWevaVeXS
A2) Find out how fams want to be comm w/ & don't assume that comm w/ fams is a natural skill. Help & support staff that needs it!
A2 find your core team to cheerlead the cause; fire folks up; make events so amazing they will all want to participate;
A2 being an advocate for students and parents in all situations to show them you care about them and their success
A2 Find out how parents want to be included--what would help them partner?
When they know you care… https://t.co/HyPyIDNZ1C
A2 being an advocate for students and parents in all situations to show them you care about them and their success
Be an advocate!
https://t.co/PTWIQV17TE
A2 being an advocate for students and parents in all situations to show them you care about them and their success
A2: We align staff professional development with parent professional development so we are a team that supports students.
so the goals are made clear to the families? That's true stakeholder partnership.
- a low grade on a test as an opportunity for parents, teachers and children to explore studying techniques.
A2: Some families can't come to school. We need to reach out to families and churches. Connect through multiple locations.
Yes! These programs make a difference even though only a handful take advantage; multi-facted approach is necessary
Exactly - may want to be involved but don't know how! Need to reach out and comm w/ them. Never assume!
I'd like to think I'm not one of those. ;)
Being connectional! https://t.co/uYOX574cRF
A2: Some families can't come to school. We need to reach out to families and churches. Connect through multiple locations.
A2 create a team that includes family members that focus on FE in your school
A2 I send notes to Ps @ beginning unit with specific advice of how/what to study
A2: I've pushed for but to no avail...many parents want to understand what we do daily with their kids.
A2: Invite participation, seek input, listen to ideas, create opportunities.
(We are not doing any of these as often as we should.)
Relationships and transparency lead to Trust
That second part is key! I love learning what they've done that week... but sometimes think, now what? https://t.co/9GqtDDGMj4
A2: Providing as many outlets for communication as possible. Make Ps aware of what is going on and how they can be a part of it.
Both. Parent surveys should be digital & hard copy at each counter; data regularly reviewed & addressed when possible
Question 3 in a moment...
- also would take some of the mysticism out of teacher processes for some parents who aren't aware of academic scheds.
A2: Please remember: not all fams have had great experiences w/ schools. Show them you're genuine & they can trust you. Be patient.
sounds amazing! Is this a snapshot of the daily grind of their Ss?
it's open during open school time but during school days parents can call in to access resources/appointment
Keep pushing. Find your tribe. https://t.co/YM17X2Cj15
A2: I've pushed for but to no avail...many parents want to understand what we do daily with their kids.
Q3) Does your school have consistent expectations across all Ts & staff for fostering family engagement? Why or why not?
Another example of why rapport is critical. When the connection is authentic, growth happens on all fronts!
Formal surveys can be “incentivized” by offering give-away drawings for completion
RT
Q3 Does your school have consistent expectations across all Ts & staff for fostering fam engagement? Why or why not?
A3: This is evident in pockets and case by case. Always need to improve and adjust depending on families needs.
I'm making a very conscious effort to make this a daily event w/ the Ps of my Ss. Needs to become routine. https://t.co/5EKtEmQQ7h
That second part is key! I love learning what they've done that week... but sometimes think, now what? https://t.co/9GqtDDGMj4
A2: Providing as many outlets for communication as possible. Make Ps aware of what is going on and how they can be a part of it.
A3- My school system has that as a part of T evaluation. Family engagement and communication is a critical component to success.
Whoa! Now that's something I want to pursue. https://t.co/Pxwo5a250X
A1 Parents communicating with us DURING class because we asked for it. 😮
RT Q3 Does your school have consistent expectations across all Ts & staff for fostering family engagement? Why or why not?
A3 Yes, expectations are the same for all - treat families with respect. The levels of engagement vary. Room for growth.
A1 Data gathered should be reviewed & used by all to improve how relationships are developed/maintained
Awesome idea! https://t.co/OItzCHL4so
My district has been doing more Facebook LIVE feeds from classrooms to show parents what we do each day. Building viewership.
A3) Our school has great support from parents and other stakeholders. Always room for improvement though.
A3 expectations are important. Customer service is a big part of what we have to do, and everyone has to represent that
A3- As an extension, having Ss be active participants in sharing the learning taking place is important. S-written newsletters.
Today we had staff PD from 330-5pm on how to support Ss w/anxiety. Then from 6-7:30, parent presentation on same.
not quite. Think of an EdCamp that includes parents.
A3 good ? I think we do; probably need to get a better feel on this one. I think they know, but that's not enough.
Invitation is important..then follow-up & follow thru! (all of which are ) https://t.co/sXh8PXUh5t
You don't get family engagement by hoping they will come. "If you build it, they will come" is not a good strategy… https://t.co/9BCpbflE38
A3 in the schools I work, no bc everyone is too crazy busy to just meet the needs of the Ss academically let alone socially
A3 Yes but no standards or suggestions. Just do it.
This is one area that the PTA can play such a positive and profound role. Building that collaboration even more.
Parent EdCamp is a great idea!
A3: Unfortunately, I think we assume staff knows how to do this, but they don't always. We also don't provide the time. We need to.
A3 As a parent it looks like T's are encouraged to engage but not all are comfortable doing so.
A3: We ask it of our staff, but I do not see a consistent expectation across the board. Just make it happen and prove you did it.
A3: Yes, Ts all have web sites & there are consistent expectations. Additonally, as a school, things we do as well.
So how do you ensure family engagement is a priority of your PLN? How do you incorporate it into your PLN?
A3 No, bc not time. Staff meetings are inefficiently run and filled w/…well…sometimes too much crap! Just saying’! Sorry :(
Yes. Build relationships, build trust!
Love the idea of a Parent EdCamp! What a great opportunity!
A3 Yes, Ps should be informed of awesome and the not-awesome, or at least Ts attempting to contact. Sadly not all Ps want to talk
A3 Our Ts are expected and encouraged to reach out to Ps. If Ps call principal, Ts are expected to call parents back to clarify.
Sandra Bays 1st grade teacher Elon Elem NC joining late
Tonight we had about 25 parents. I'd hoped for more, but we also have other events this week too. Busy week!
Not my idea - others have used it; I just stole the idea.
You’re just in time for the rest of the conversation. Welcome!
Yes! Staff need to know how to build relationships authentically even w/people they may not like
A3 Last yr had a P meet with my princ and accuse I didnt want to teach, just tell Ps what to teach at home. Double-edged
Sounds like to me! Or for everyone. https://t.co/AobjjQtYzF
A2: We align staff professional development with parent professional development so we are a team that supports students.
I bet they could do it! Spend a few days practicing and working out glitches.
It’s a wonderful idea! Will suggest to school leadership team.
That's what we do in education!
Yes they do! Also, putting yourself in your students' and fams' shoes is a huge skill to master.
Where to find the time--good point.
I'm VERY interested in your response to Q4...
A3 there should be a consistent expectation of level of partnership with parents - communication is just the beginning. (Linda/GA)
RT Q4 In your school, would Ps see a consistent level of communication from their child's Ts from year to year? Why or why not?
A4 Probably not. Some Ts are stronger in this area than others.
A4: As a parent this varies and as a school admin. it varies. The key is to reach out in many ways. Some need more than others.
We could all benefit from more empathy.
https://t.co/TFfsJCFMux
Yes they do! Also, putting yourself in your students' and fams' shoes is a huge skill to master.
Q4) In your school, would Ps see a consistent level of communication from their child's Ts from year to year? Why or why not?
Again, wow!!!
Thanks for sharing this fantastic idea.
True, and they may not realize they need coaching and advice to improve relationships!
A3) we used to require 1 positive phone call/month for every student. Was great for building relationships - needed in tough times
A3: This year we did home visits for the first time. Not required, but encouraged. Many did not take the opportunity.
A4 I need to provide more opps for Ts to share how they are communicating w Ps with one another (& the impact this has on lrng)
RT Q4 In your school, would Ps see a consistent level of communication from their child's Ts from year to year? Why or why not?
A4: Umm, not so much - expectations and reality don't always match.
A4 Every T in my school sends home a to every child over the course of the year.
A4 Moving people away from a fixed mindset takes patience that begins w/listening; Lots pf paraphrasing & questioning
thanks for stopping in! What if we parents don't see that consistency? What should we expect?
A4) expectations for teachers need to be clear. Can't leave it up to them and "hope for the best."
A4 I hope so. I ask all my ts to contact every fam in their hr by the end of week 2 and keep ps in the loop with good news too
A4) Wouldn't that be impossible, as every teacher is different, as well as expectations year to year?
A4 Some do this more regularly than others, all reply to emails/calls in a timely manner. Some reach out first before parents do
A4- I would say yes, but it’s always something that can grow. Positive, purposeful, and authentic communication are necessities.
A4: In most schools the amount of communication varies. This frustrates families.
A4: Would like to say yes, but cannot. In many cases, the conversation is neg. Need to incorporate more pos. interactions.
A4 No bc no standard, not enough time in day, not all Ts believe important, not working in a COL yet
had the parent addressed that with you first?
A4 Oops. I thought at question weird. I answered last weeks. Cahilk! LOL!
Some parents welcome teacher contact, some hate it. Pay attention and don't be too pushy.
Has to become a cultural shift! https://t.co/7Gn2PQjENy
A4 No bc no standard, not enough time in day, not all Ts believe important, not working in a COL yet
A4 It varies between teachers based on their comfort level and teaching style. I love building comm and relationship with Ps
is so important, and doesn’t happen over night. Requires time, dedication, commitment, outreach…
A4 No,sometimes as a result of inconsistencies, but more often as a result of different com. needs/styles of ascending grade levels
A4 We've had yrs where T's built relationships and communicated and years where there was nothing. Makes a huge difference!
agree 100%. Really all adults need to be on same page and goal should always be in service to what benefits kids.
Communicate & respect differences https://t.co/OmWD6urOXU
Some parents welcome teacher contact, some hate it. Pay attention and don't be too pushy.
…and positive, productive communication and collaboration. Everyone being “all in”.
We Ps get used to being engaged and end up disappointed next year. Should the most engaged teacher set the standard for engagement?
A3 Windows and Mirrors for Ps and Ts?
School staff need to increase two-way communication with families. Traditional communication from school-to-home has been one-way.
A4: Unfortunately, no. Some meet parents where they are. Others expect parents to come to them.
A4: No, but I wish they would! And they should. Need to be better about clear expectations and giving staff time.
And Q5 will expand on this...
Q5) How do you measure an educator's level of family engagement?
A4 Likely not! Why? Most educators have not been given the time to develop expert parent communication sklls needed in 21st Century
A4 We are slowly evolving to use tech to communicate with Ps. As with Ss, we need to give them timely feedback.
How about teaching the methods of the most engaged teacher, rather than setting it as a standard?
A5: As a building principal I always knew who built the relationships and who did not. Was evident come parent teacher conf. time!
RT
Q5 How do you measure an educator's level of family engagement?
Taking the first step can produce such positive results. Have to be willing to dialogue, collaborate, support.
Oh, this tweet reminds me of something to try. In lieu of a staff mtg ea MP, Ts will have time 2 make
A4 -probably not -everyone has different ideas of when it's important to call -some do bare minimum, some give 200%.
A5) hard to measure but parent and student surveys are a good place to gain meaningful insights.
A5 Names with faces, contacting home is first move, and asking other Ts to join in building that
RT Q5 How do you measure an educator's level of family engagement?
A4 Does admin review each yr the necessary varied & effective ways to communicate w/parents both analog & digital?
A5: That is an excellent question!
A5: Comm logs.. but should also look at newsletters, websites, invitations to events, etc. Need to recognize more than phone calls!
I like that approach. Wondering how to address it as a P: How do we encourage schools to pursue that?
A5: Formative assessment - Admin views interactions btwn Ps and Ts during conferences and events. It is evident.
Qualitative over quantitative https://t.co/cWMQhkzKGY
A5) hard to measure but parent and student surveys are a good place to gain meaningful insights.
A5- The level of information exchanged, from learning experiences to significant data points…having a lens on the growth.
A5.2: I use a planner specifically for tracking any contact I make with Ps over the course of the year. Helps me recognize my role.
A5 By how well they know ps names, and how comfortable they feel calling ps with good and bad news
and it makes the "nothing" stand out more when you've already seen excellence.
Yes! <3 that! And it's a PD staff will def walk away happy from!
A5 If they meet the needs of families. Some may need hand holding and others very little. As a parent I need to know you care.
A5 How about reflection from all sides?
A5: Quantity of contacts, response time, T and P know something personal about each other
A5- How involved are Ss in helping Ts produce communication w/ Ps? Building Ss voice, helping Ps see the learning taking place.
Agreed! On of the 1st day staff meeting staple shld incld culture development, HQ customer srvce, Prnt involvement
A5) By the amount of success of the student in a classroom/academic setting. Each relationship would be different.
why do you think they hate it if they care about their kids' education?
A5 As part of our eval we document the ways we engage Ps. Phone log, e-mails, webpages. Loved the idea of "inviting" parents
A5 Artifacts (video, teacher blog, class website, Google Docs, evidence of two-way communication, etc.) See https://t.co/4IfBv0tDJI
Yes, it does. https://t.co/odkRKeWfN6
A4: In most schools the amount of communication varies. This frustrates families.
A5 https://t.co/et4Fpvs8b8
Great question! I'd like to see school leaders move to talking about level of partnership rather than amount or kin… https://t.co/KnZruxuAGn
thanks for stopping in! What if we parents don't see that consistency? What should we expect?
A5 we have FE nights required of staff - they use artifacts as part of their evaluations -
don't know about impossible... different, maybe. I'd be open to different means every year.
A5 Whatever the method is, it should be multi-faceted and agreed upon by all staff
A5 -By the amount of trust the P has in the T and the amount of trust the T has is in P. Relationships go both ways
Definitely, the weight needs to also be on Ss or it won't be a long-term, habitual relationship builder https://t.co/kphhVldy6M
A5- How involved are Ss in helping Ts produce communication w/ Ps? Building Ss voice, helping Ps see the learning taking place.
With communicating with Ps through technology, it is easier to see the level of comm that takes place between Ts and Ps
My oldest missed a week of school w/ pneumonia. Love the Ts that met w' him 2 check his understanding.
We need to be mindful that some parents are scrambling just to keep food on the table.
Of course, as long as there is time to analyze and use the data :)
That's awesome! Hope he is feeling better!
They use pics, invites, activities, sign in, video...
I love seeing Ps who I can carry on a personal convo with - oh and how's Johnny doing BTW?
Time---> the currency of education.
We've already alluded a bit to Q6...
Agreed. Need to be mindful parents are scrambling to keep up no matter the SES
Q6) How does a school's perspective on & use of technology & social media influence its level of family engagement?
Multi-faceted approach so important when trying to reach all of our parents. https://t.co/4NWdN8y0H7
A5 Whatever the method is, it should be multi-faceted and agreed upon by all staff
RT
Q6 How does a school's perspective on & use of technology & social media influence its level of family engagement?
A6: Schools that are willing to meet parents where they are will see great benefits. -talk their language.
A6- Social media should enhance the level of family engagement. Advertise good things taking place daily. Promote the calendar.
My fav moments are Ps of former Ss that stop by just to chat. Happens frequently during conf. in my room.
how is that? More prep required without prior relationship? Or more surface-level?
RT Q6 How does a school's perspective on & use of technology & social media influence its level of family engagement?
A6: Openness to social media = more parent engagment - its the way the world works today so Ed has to evolve.
We also need to be mindful there are parents who should not be parents bc they do not care! Unfortunate reality.
A great example of when they know you care! https://t.co/ErRI49o7BL
My fav moments are Ps of former Ss that stop by just to chat. Happens frequently during conf. in my room.
now that's a relationship.
A5 Staff has gone out to neighborhoods before registration to celebrate a new year homes and attendance at regist has increased!
A6: We need to recognize what tech is in our Ss/Ps home and provide info on how to effectively use it for school comm.
A6 incl. social media is an accelerator of what already exists. If there is a … https://t.co/KFO7afrnuj
Q6) How does a school's perspective on & use of technology & social media influence its level of family engagement?
The first school that figures out how to do it right will be famous. :D The generation gap now is the biggest hurdle.
A6 fams are on social media, many prefer it for communication, use it or lose touch w/ them. We need to meet them where they are
Same! (Except our format doesn't allow for drop-ins anymore)
A5 When a T informs a parent of a problem and they look for a solution together with the S you've arrived.
A6 we've increased our electronic & SM presence dramatically this year; already noticed an increase in family attendance @ events!
A6: So many Ts and families text - we need to use text more - via phones or apps. Quick and easy way to keep in touch!
A6: Potentially opens additional doors to promote partnerships & increase engagement.
Parent workshops on technology can be an empowering and enriching experience. Connecting Ps to Ss learning.
A6 A district hashtag is like a TV channel or radio station for all schools too. Follow !
think we need more adult time. teachers should come back 3 weeks before kids and have 2 preps/day
A6 The focus on it is a must! Without it, you just greatly lowered your parent engagement "quality score.”
Yes - Remind, Class Dojo, and other apps are great!
A6: Need to make the time & prioritize social media more - fams love updates, pics, success stories! So fun and inspiring!
knowing the tech and using it to build partnerships are different things. Ts, Ps, Ss... all have much to learn.
"Keyboard Courage" should be high school required credit. :p
