Welcome 2 #HipHopEd tonight's topic "Rage against the machine: System Inequities and their impact on race and culture" is a dialogue that is necessary to have on many fronts
Art has a responsibility to provide the stage to question and discuss the issues of life even if the art doesn't provide all the answers. Salute to @JoynerLucas "I'm not a racist" for stirring the pot #HipHopEd

Tonight 9pm EST Rage Against The Machine: A discussion about systematic inequities and its impact on views of race and culture #HipHopEd#MoreThanASongChat
I should’ve started off by saying it’s a great piece of art to spearhead discussion. I used to video in my classroom to introduce argumentative essay writing
#HipHopED The original environment that spawned hip-hop was infiltrated like no other art form. It's was my first CNN. My trusted window to the world through the eyes of black men (i.e. it was originally dominated by black men) A dangerous perspective for America then and now.

The "I'm not a racist" piece shows that most youth of color know more around how they are seen by Whites and society than they understand the systems the create the view #HipHopEd

Ss from communities of color have been conditioned to believe their lifestyles (i.e. Language, dress) are abnormal. That's how systemic inequities are perpetuated. #HipHopEd
The dialogue that follows is important. As educators, we must be aware of current dialogue so that we can help guide students through emotions that are stirred from these performances. #HipHopEd
Interesting article about the "learning gap" in standardized testing. Talk about systemic issues in the educational system. https://t.co/yDtbCbpkp2#hiphoped
Someone needs to invent a cultural filter that can distinguish culture and output magnitude in some way shape or form. I guess that's where economics comes into play. #HipHopEd

#HipHopEd HH can’t be just used as a buffer to gloss over oppression and racism HH is not a Kuumba ya moment but rather a culture that presents an opportunity for truth re: these very issues
Never break a student down if you can’t build them back up...School Counseling 101. It’s crucial to talk about trauma, race, and their intricacies, but not without instilling hope and a path forward #HipHopEd
It would interesting to have White students examine the narrative of the White man and focus on why many of the stereotypes expressed are same things many think are cool #HipHopEd
I believe conviction is needed. The question is where is it directed & coming from. When discussing race, we are discussing power and relinquishing of said power. For that conviction is needed.#HipHopEd

I face this challenge every semester w/ my pre-service Ts. Each semester gets easier to enter into conversations about race, but still difficult initially to get engagement with predominantly White students who have not been asked to have this conversation before #HipHopEd
I just had that same thought. I'm Kennedra, a #physed teacher from MD. Had a chance to observe a reading teacher yesterday. Content taught was not meaningful or relevant for Ss. If Ss could listen to this & write & discuss...we'd get so much more. #hiphoped
The trust to have discussions with students about system inequities and race has to be earned from the students. You can’t have it based on position #HipHopEd
The beauty of Hip Hop is its ability to cultivate the attention of the masses, regardless of the content. The beauty of #HipHopEd (ucators) is our ability capatalize on that attention and create spaces for youth to make sense of the content.
I wonder if someone could make a "powers that be" tree infographic or flow-line/time line? That would speak truth to power in this context and lay bare HH's mass appeal genealogy #HipHopEd

True words. Nor force it on them because you want to have the discussion. They have to be ready to participate, both developmentally and emotionally. #HipHopEd

Systemic inequities around health and nutrition. What we put in our bodies matters. Food deserts exist in some area codes and not in others. Empowerment around healthy bodies and healthy minds #hiphoped
It is a tight balance because a lot of ppl feel you are calling them racist when discussing racism. Important to build a vocabulary of oppression. #HipHopEd

I see that discussions need to be had at my school & people don't always know how to have them. May have to have discussions as adults first on how to open up dialogue w/each other before talking to Ss. #hiphoped
I like 2 remind myself & students that each of our gens inherits da progress, power & pain of prev. 1s but also the responsibility to do even more #HipHopEd
When we say "systems" we have to break them down so that our students truly understand. Sometimes "systems" is used as a scapegoat term so that people aren't held accountable #HipHopEd
First, it starts with creating a courageous space, rather than a safe one. Our students tend to retreat and use the safe space concept as a blanket when nudged into discomfort. #HipHopEd

The audience & the audience's perception of the speaker needs to be considered in approaching conversations about race and power. Even having a relationship/rapport with someone does not always make that conversation easier. #HipHopEd

True indeed! You could break it down into sectors from Health, Economics, Education, Media/Ent, Political and then it becomes more digestible #HipHopEd
Agreed because we have to realize that Educators are people with feelings and experiences that have to be examined before they can lead transformative discussions with their students #HipHopEd
Studying institutional racism / inequalities with historical examples far removed from today's Ss' memories helps ease some emotional, personal investments... and then we can bring Ss to understand how those same institutions/struct are still with us in the present #HipHopEd

May have to build outside classroom. Have class of 33 8th grdrs upset w/me for coming & teaching according to our Phys Ed standards. They're used to doing what they want. Started lunch bunch double dutch w/girls in the class to build relationships. #hiphoped
From there, it's in everyday practice. As facilitators or educators we have to model conviction and acknowledge our miss steps and falls. Especially during the learning process. #HipHopEd
What do you mean by "their history"? If we're talking about a cultural history it's difficult b/c many students (particularly blk Ss) have not been heavily exposed to their history. All they know is what tchrs and textbook have communicated. #hiphoped
When we say "systems" we have to break them down so that our students truly understand. Sometimes "systems" is used as a scapegoat term so that people aren't held accountable #HipHopEd
Giving space for our students to speak their truths with conviction. Learn and grow from them. We all need to be convicted in one area or another in our lives. It's not those in power when discussing race issues. #HipHopEd
Exactly right! I connect much better with my students outside of class, and then they become my allies in classroom management. I have been connecting outside the classroom with dance. #HipHopEd
Also, no ear piercings or tattoos for me but I do like a little bit of bling. #ImNotRacist#HipHopEd Wirh regards to the white guy the beard has got to go or be maintained in a professional environment, I.e. I shave my beard for my job as a server at #IHOP
I wonder, though, if it's an either or. That is, we can commit to an atmosphere of deep interpersonal regard and accountability while also facing ugly truths together -- and then crafting ways to resist and restore, repair and progress #HipHopEd
Have Ts and Ss create playlist that they believe capture how they feel about each other when it comes to education. Swap lists and then explain POV to create a new space to coexist #HipHopEd
And lastly, we have to lead and walk in grace. We are all in this beautiful struggle and need as many allies and others involved as possible. But we are all going to make mistakes because the topic is so convicting. #HipHopEd
I also think building awareness around self-identity and how one views their own privilege & oppression also builds the understanding to examine systemic inequities. #hiphoped

I "sampled" this from @chrisemdin. Instant classroom tradition when teaching - "Can I proceed?" after explaining a concept...yall know the response #HipHopEd
And that was the point. Approach Ss in small groups & build from there. Was thinking.. Yes, I need you to be physically active but let me show you how in a smaller setting where we can build trust. #hiphoped

We also have to examine how systems will self select some of the oppressed & reward them to make the behaviors of oppression acceptable and even cool #hiphoped
So leaving room to make mistakes and learn from them is important. We have mad blueprints, but we all walking into unchartered territory when progressing our nation past the systematic inequities due to race. #HipHopEd
Absolutely! It helps when I start with my own experience in learning to talk about race & honestly admitting how difficult and uncomfortable it can be given that I grew up in an all-White, racist, rural community #HipHopEd
I see that discussions need to be had at my school & people don't always know how to have them. May have to have discussions as adults first on how to open up dialogue w/each other before talking to Ss. #hiphoped
That reminds me of when I was facilitating in Rikers and a young man said, I wanna learn about the systems. He mentioned being in foster care, psych ward, getting his GED @ 16 and wanted to how the "systems" work BC they have been governing his life and he needs to get out.
What was an amazing learning experience was the fact that so many of the questions asked in the original song were still relevant and unanswered in their hoods #HipHopEd
Yes. It takes time and trust building. But if we can do it in the classroom and they attempt to do it outside the classroom. We winning. Not easy by any means but well worth it. #HipHopEd
Too many "progressive" teachers blindly follow a set of scripts handed to them by admin without asking who designed it & what their intentions are #HipHopEd
While we're talking about today's topic, being feminine doesn't default to wearing a dress. You don't get props for that in my book. There are other mediums to express femininity while still being masculine. #HipHopEd
#HipHopED Listen to Nough Said | We made a positive song dedicated to Alabama women. 14+minutes long... Several Birmingham artist are featured from spoken word artist, emcees singers. Track produced by Grammy nominated Sam P. Addams (Anthony Avery)
https://t.co/7ON0MIEpns
And realizing & teaching Ss that a large part of our "within" comes from outside forces / texts / flows we may not even see nor are prepared for #HipHopEd
Gives me an idea for my class of 33 8th grders. Want to structure my class in a sports/fitness clinic style...where Ss are experts on a sport/skill/exercise & they teach that to the rest..Ss would go to the station that interests them #hiphoped
The success of the systems have us separated on so many fronts that the inner-me has supplanted the enemy when it comes to who we think we are truly at war with #HipHopEd
There are strong connections between Hip-Hop and Sports. Have your students examine and present their own correlations to the class. Have them create soundtracks for workouts and sporting events #HipHopEd

All these inequities = trauma on some level, and this collective trauma serves to divide us, to defang movement, and to force us to obsess over difference without gaining ground #hiphoped
Be brave and set the stage have these conversation about system inequities and reach with the parents of your students and then collectively engage the students. #HipHopEd#FamilyFirst
