Good evening! & I are glad you could join this evening. Please say hello, tell us where you're from & your 1:1 status
I'm Jonathan, a Library & Instructional Tech Specialist at where we're 1:1 iPads 5-12. And I co-org with
Good evening PLN @
Michael, HS Principal 1:1 Chromebooks in Rhode Island
Tonight we are talking about how we can leverage Social Media to tell your school/classroom's 1:1 story https://t.co/5N1cr7TfLb
We use the standard Q1/A1 format. Please tag answers with the corresponding A# and don't forget , too. Lurk or jump in any time!
I'm Sean - Director of Instructional Technology at HS We are 1:1 iPads in our 2nd year.
Q1 will be coming up in 1 min.
Dan from St. Louis. Business teacher. Slowly putting more chromebooks in the classrooms. Just put 270 in our school.
kyle - network admin from philly
Q1: When have you seen the WRONG 1:1 story being told? What was that story? What was the RIGHT story? https://t.co/oHSmAB9Bxc
Happy to Join as co-org of Always glad to see some new and not so new faces tonight.
Jon, HS Spanish T and Tech Mentor in NJ in year 2, 1:1 Macbooks.
a1: how about when you haven't seen ANY story being told about 1:1?
A1 - if you read any newspapers or anything the governor says in NJ, you would think all schools and Ts are awful.
A1 part 2 There are lots of great things happening. We must use social media to show it.
That's my biggest fear. We are trying to move forward with 1:1 but nobody outside our walls sees our sucesses.
A1 Wrong- We need 1:1 for PARCC or other testing
Right- Let me show you what we can do given the tech & opportunity
If you read anything the governor says in ME, you'd think he made himself the DOE Commissioner. Oh, wait. He did!
i haven't seen much of anything from our teachers about their use of 1:1 tech. in any social media that i know of
And yet, good things still happen every days in our schools!
Q2 will be coming up in 1 min.
Q2: When have you seen Social Media used well to tell a school's 1:1 story? How was that story told? https://t.co/g2TPRSZ8as
That's our problem as well. Ts aren't using SM to share what they are doing in classroom. Not seeing the benefits
Same with us. Question is why? Fear? Time? Don't know how?
a2: our communications department does a good job of telling the story of the school, just not when it comes to our 1:1 program
Such a great point. Focus isn't on the creativity, and that's where we want our Ss - at the top of Bloom's
i don't know if they care enough to make it a point to share outside their classroom.
Ts need to see a personal benefit with a limited amount of time invested. They see it as 'another thing'
A2 Love what & others have built & shown at & about Burlington MA
Maybe we can organize an 'Adopt a Twitter Newbie' program. You get a Twitter buddy to help get started
I am sure that is true for some. I try to convince as many as I can the benefits I get.
What has esp struck you about the story ?
So many voices. So many meaningful stories and outcomes. Not afraid to show what is being done day 2 day https://t.co/YSSe52Dgt9
What has esp struck you about the story ?
Agreed. I got dozens of colleagues to sign up for twitter, but not sure how many have used it since then.
Does a great job with all their accounts telling their story, and they don't even have 1:1 yet
As a senior in the college of Ed, we have been implementing sm & tech more into lessons. I hope to see this more!
A2: We use YouTube to create weekly episodes that highlight everything that is going on at our school. https://t.co/SySAc0vORn
same here. there are a few, but the rest that signed up either are only lurking or forgot their password
I keep getting a few more here and there, & Twitter PD scheduled for tomorrow. Need more follow up though
Q3 will be coming up in 1 min.
A2. Agreed on . also does a great job. Makes you want to work there.
Q3: What resistance to using Social Media in schools have you encountered? How have you overcome it? https://t.co/LmZcmXc3RY
If you haven't joined yet, now is the time! Discussing Using Soc Med to tell Your 1:1 Story https://t.co/EcWpkrWL2t
Always depends on school policies. Hopefully you find a school that is open to SM, & not locked down.
That damn password. Stops more people from logging into email and other such nonsense.
has a poll for you guys on ! Please answer and retweet :) https://t.co/0kKoiMZiuK
Let's try this: Do you know about the ''. From where? RT liberally.
Welcome to this is an awesome example of telling your story.
a3: "why? no time. too much nonsense on twitter." the usual excuses.
A3 - many adults' initial expernces w/ social media are negative: Ss misusing, obnoxious celebs. Need to model right way to use.
if only there was a way to have a new password sent to you.
A3: We struggled to move from a completely locked down environment to embracing SM. Still viewed with negative connotation
A3: Don't have to dedicate specific time to join Twitter chats...tweet as you go and still learn.
A3: There is some weird fear of actually learning Twitter. I can't explain it. It's not difficult or anything.
Or using the same one for multiple accounts.
Discussing telling your school's story via Soc Media in tonight. And your work plus are GREAT examples.
So glad you could join us tonight. Make sure you connect with some of these great educators on
they need to treat it like a la carte cable. just watch the channels you are interested in & the noise goes away
We need to share our early struggles to make sure they know they're not alone
Q4 will be coming up in 1 min.
Agreed. But I think they are convinced there aren't any "channels" for them.
Q4: Who are your “Social Media in Schools” idols? What do they do that deserves your admiration? https://t.co/4XXKYyijhY
YES! I still come across so many people with Twittaphobia who seem to eschew the growth mindset
the first channel is pretty easy. "what do you teach?" guaranteed there is someone out there to follow.
a4: our admins do a pretty good job of sharing the happenings around our school. i wish it could rub off on more teachers
A4 - already mentioned some of my favs, but love the creation of a school hashtag that all Ts can use, all Ps and Ss can follow.
Is definitely an idol in all she does & shares w/ her student tech team Great example of sharing 1:1
1 of the first things we did was create a hashtag. Probably should have focused on getting more Ts on Twitter 1st
A4 some of my Social media in schools inspirations are:
if you have a hashtag that no one uses, is it a hashtag?
A4 2 come 2 mind: leads/shares w/core values of his school.
who tells our story with so much caring
We have Ss and coaches running our team Twitter accounts - just got started, but getting better.
Q5 will be coming up in 1 min.
a4: our athletic department has started tweeting a lot this year. this is the first year too. we need a hashtag though
Q5: What particular aspects of 1:1 have you seen highlighted or touted yourself that others might try? https://t.co/Y19jqBR9ez
Thanks for sharing these. Glad to see you on
our school hashtag is 90% full of athletic stuff.
I remember those vividly.
A4: Social Media in school idols:
I am fine with one. I am a big sports guy, I just wish more great things that were going on were showcased there.
We spent a lot of time trying to find one that represented us positively. Created
When I created all our Twitter accounts, 1st thing I did was follow each other. Created online community.
Anyone else watching UNC v Duke? Great game so far.
Considering my wife & 2 girls have control of the TV - that's not happening in my house tonight.
A5 Always love to see educators sharing Ss work and see students tweeting it or podcasting it out (etc.) themselves!
Maybe that's the best way to encourage Ts to utilize SM. To share their Ss stories instead of their own.
That's how I watched Baylor v Iowa State yesterday.
Q6 will be coming up in 1 min.
Q6: Looking specifically at students/classrooms using Soc Med what strategies work to help manage them? https://t.co/3Vo8akxmXJ
A5: Embedded PD-a person 2 work in schools every day directly w/teachers
A6 - this is something I need to do more of. Wish was here to highlight how his Ss are using SM in class.
a6: for younger grades, use a google form for students to submit tweets. you could use the text limiter to set it to 140 char
Allowing Ss to run the Soc Med accounts teaches Ss responsibility and how to connect globally
will be coming up in 1 min.
: What did you discover or consider during this evening's chat that will change and/or improve your practice TOMORROW?
That I continually get good ideas from this chat (like class twitter account) that I have to start doing with my Ss!
Great idea. Also Google Doc set up w/ a table can be used as a conversation between historical figures https://t.co/aI7B1dOhwM
