Thanks @MrsTCombs Great question. #bfc530 Greatest change for me as a teacher was believing more in my students - giving them more power in the classroom. I wish I had done that sooner in my career. That'd be my advice.

1. Use Twitter to grow your #pln. 2. Understand that the person doing the talking in the room is doing the learning. 3. Eliminate the stress of homework. 4. Remember that not all advice is good advice. #bfc530

I would say: Be true to your own teaching heart. It's tempting to emulate what others are doing but if it doesn't sit well with you now, it never will. #bfc530

Start each day new with your students. If you had a rough day w/ a student, acknowledge it with them, let them know you aren’t giving up on them! #bfc530
I'm worn out. Just came back from a hiking camp with Year 8 boys... But it was fun. I love putting a pack on my back and disappearing into the bush. #bfc530
I’d tell my younger self that it’s really important for teachers to practice self care to avoid burnout that shortens too many teaching careers. Take weekends off, exercise, treat yourself right. When you’re healthy and energized you will be a much better teacher. #BFC530

The piece of advice I used a lot last yr was - don’t be afraid to ask for help. The one I’m using this year is - practice self-care/remember yr priorities (for me that means sleep, working out 💪🏼 and down time reading) #BFC530

Don’t take every bad choice a studentmakes personally, be flexible, be willing to continue learning, and find reasons to laugh, really laugh. It’s so good for you and your kids! #bfc530
2 or 3 times a year stop and write down what you are proud of, perhaps even share it in a blog. We are all so busy that we get wrapped up in missed opportunities and we can be unaware of how much success we have had. #BFC530
Look for the positive...
...in your relationships with teacher
...in your approach to students
...and celebrate your students and school whenever you can.
Be a light of kindness. #bfc530
I would say: Be true to your own teaching heart. It's tempting to emulate what others are doing but if it doesn't sit well with you now, it never will. #bfc530
Dear younger self: discover your #PLN and create your #PD plan that implements #bestpractices Approach new tech and apps with a child's curiosity and determination #bfc530
1st year is hard, but worth it. Dont think you know everything. Find a oder teacher who loves to answer your ?'s. There is more paperwork other than grading tests/essays. #bfc530

I would say to not take the behaviors of kids personally. Also to Focus on the impact you can have within your own locus of control rather than bemoaning things you can’t change. Of course I’m giving that advice to my current self as well 😉#bfc530
#bfc530 My advice is to stay away from negative people. You cannot #teach properly if you get pulled into negativity. Also, take care of yourself! You are a better #teacher when you are well-rested. Resist the urge to get everything done. Be a #happy teacher for your #students.

I assign classwork that should be completed by the time students leave class, however, that doesn't always happen for all. I will say that the amount of problems/activities that I assign are less in quantity and are high floor/higher ceiling to promote critical thinking. #bfc530
Allow time for reflection and change. Don’t get caught up in “this went wrong” mindset. Think, “this is what i am going to do to make it better.” #bfc530
Yes! So important to seek out people you learn and grow with! And I’d add that those may or may not be your teammates! I remember finding some online bulletin boards back in the day. A #pln before I knew it was a thing! #bfc530
Morning all, another two hour plus ride ahead this morning. Hope to catch up tomorrow, and see how all of us east coasters will deal with the approaching Novembergeddon. #bfc530
Advice: Always celebrate the little wins, and the big ones. Change is worth it but often comes slowly in education. Make sure to take time to do things that you enjoy. And you are making a difference. #bfc530
Well, I’m pretty new myself I guess - not over the 5-year hump yet 😂. I guess to stay true to your teaching beliefs, yet be open to listen to those with experience. Find your PLN for support and advice. Be proactive, not reactive, and remember that communication is key #bfc530
Advice for my younger self ... listen to the kids. Contrary to what many believe they are not lazy kids who do not want to learn ... they’re just kids looking guidance ..: be their guide. #bfc530
(1) Im glad my social life returned after a few years. The shock of going from college where my social life was vibrant to staying in my apartment grading & preparing lessons on a Saturday night was a big adjustment my 1st years as a teacher. #bfc530

My advice? Don’t fall for the testing charade. Yes, data can be useful; however, the tyranny of the metric is real and too often we let it blind us from other nonmeasurables that matter just as much if not more. #BFC530
I’d also say be open to opportunitiesthat you might not have considered your path. Look at a chance to teach a new grade level or at a new school or with a new team as a chance to learn, improve and grow even if it’s not your first choice #bfc530
(2) But as your experience grows, you learn better time management & value time for you also. Now most weekends are for my students (although end of marking period can still be dicey) #bfc530
You teach kids, first. And then you learn content together. Your goal is to create/facilitate LEs that are meaningful, memorable, relevant, standards-based, and fun for kids. Invest whole-❤edly in the #wholechild without expecting others to invest in the #wholeeducator. #bfc530

And for that kid who is acting out or has withdrawn or is just “different” today, try to find out why. Check in with them. Relationships are at the core of education. Learning is fundamentally social and emotional. #bfc530

If you hang in there, the growing pains you feel now will pay off ten-fold in the future. Comparison is the thief of joy-learn from others but know that you are developing your own style. Never forget that you teach kids first and curriculum second. You’ve got this! #bfc530

Good for you keeping the yearbooks! The end of the school year is always so busy, but I think I would love to have 8th graders sign my yearbook at the end of the year. Need to make time. #BFC530
Younger self: You don't know it all or better than your peers, get a mentor, be involved in your community, ask for help, make connections with kids on their level, make backup lessons when tech fails, unplug when you go home, listen more than you speak.

A cool thing for me is a young lady I taught for several years in CT, goes to the same church as me here in NJ 20 years later. Neat to see her & her beautiful family on a weekly basis. She is even my daughter's Sunday School teacher, so it has come full circle #bfc530

#bfc530 Be yourself. Don't be what you think you need to be as an educator. If you know it's right and it has a little flavor of yourself, do it! Adults may not get it, but your Ss will ❤ it!
Never let yourself get stuck in a rut, constantly be mindful of what is working now for the students you have in front of you (not what worked okay last year) #BFC530
I'm in my fifth year, and unfortunately, some of those suggestions I mentioned need to be reminders with more frequency. Becoming, in education, takes time. #bfc530
Love that! Just love seeing how their lives turned out:) One of my former Ss is my hairdresser and I see her once a month, always catching up on everyone we know:)

About 90% of the job is paperwork and meetings. No, they didn't tell you that in college--and they won't, you're right, but persevering thru the parts that are less desirable is definitely worth the 10% that breathes meaning into your passions. Press on! #bfc530

In your first year, keep a calendar, where at the end of each day, you mark 👍 or 👎 for "Yes, I still want to be an educator," or "No, this isn't for me." Proceed--or not--based on that total score. Kids don't deserve kinda. They deserve an educator who's 100% all in. ❤ #bfc530

The thing about #bfc530 that everyone is missing is that we are on the verge of runaway climate change and we need a complete re-think of the global economy to ensure a just society & avoid planetary catastrophe.
It’s normal your first year to survive every day. It’s very overwhelming. Take it one day at a time. Live in the now which is today. It will get better your second year. And if you focus on what is best for students you will always feel comfortable with your decisions. #bfc530
Hundreds of migrants from the caravan reach the U.S. border and scale the small fence that separates Tijuana, Mexico, and San Diego, California.
They're almost all young men, little to no women and children.
We’re finally here! I hope that this book might help each of you embrace the beauty of who you are, and I wish you all the best in your own process of becoming. https://t.co/tOEk59nT71#IAmBecoming

The next time you hear Republicans in Congress complain about the deficit, remind them that they stood by as the Trump administration spent $200 million to deploy 5,000 troops to the border (over Thanksgiving) for a political stunt.
The U.S. recorded a $100,500,000,000 budget deficit in October, an increase of about 60% from a year earlier, as spending grew twice as fast as revenue. https://t.co/ZFScIkRnMa

Don’t check your emails after work or on the weekends, balance work/life situations better. It’s ok to say NO to a school event or activity that someone else is organizing, especially during the last few months, oh and report cards, it’s ok to ask around for some advice #bfc530
When something doesn’t feel right, or you become extremely stressed, something has to change. For example, if you dread seeing a certain class every day, change the seating chart. Do a restorative circle. Do a day or 10 minutes of goal setting. #bfc530
Persevere. Learn. Grow. Collaborate. Plan. Teach. Enjoy. Repeat! It’s alright to ask for help. Know your grade level standards and content. Seek resources that align to your stamdards. Celebrate your students’ growth of any kind and your success daily! #bfc530
